Lecture périodique, contexte médiatique et bandes dessinées

Matthieu Letourneux

Buying a comic book magazine means engaging in a relationship not with a work, but with a periodical. Reading a comic book magazine appears above all as a press experience that predetermines the understanding of the works. It is based on an editorial reading pact that brings together the heterogeneity of the signatures under a common identity. The intrinsic characteristics of the magazines reflect a specific aesthetic relationship that obeys the specific dynamics of the medium (periodicity, editorial reading pact, polyphony, principle of variety, etc.). Therefore, it would be wrong to think of the magazine first as an antechamber to the album—or even as an offering of a series of juxtaposed or agglomerated works that could be examined alone—without seeing that it establishes the conditions for a specific aesthetic relationship, which should be considered in a global manner. It is the overall relationship to the object, through the editorial reading pact, the recurring sections, the overall organization of the periodical, the fragmentary reading induced by the mosaic of texts and images, the hierarchies it produces, and the possibilities of contextual appropriation it allows, which define the atmosphere of the magazine, and which we propose to examine in this article.

Clean-Up Workers (Deluxe Series): The Embodiment of Waste Values and Aesthetics

Gayle Matthias

Written from the perspective of practice-led research, this reflective case study rationalises and charts the production of ‘Clean-Up Workers (Deluxe Series)’—mixed media sculptures that embody notions of waste aesthetic, value and abjection. Integrating discourses surrounding waste theory and using the sink and plug as a metaphor to discuss Lacan’s theory of the <i>objet petit a</i>, the paper is presented as an autobiographical waste narrative. Production of a series of anatomical vacuum cleaners made from re-appropriated artwork found waste materials in the form of ‘pre-owned objects or materials’ and ‘by-products’ of a creative practice’, sit alongside crafted luxurious glass objects and speak of corporeal ageing, dysfunction and the domestic realm. Discarded objects take the form of car parts found in the non-places of the gutter. Through assemblage, these unique items’ ‘use-time’ is recontextualised and elevated as art objects viewed within a gallery arena.

Decolonising cinematography education: experimenting with lighting ratios and textures for Black and Asian skin tones

Cinematographers are trained to control and measure the relative difference in brightness between two parts of a scene, or a face, for expressive purposes. Painting is often referred to for inspiration as practitioners learn to compose and represent light and shadow in an aesthetically considered manner. In this respect, it is noteworthy that the painters generally studied by film-making students are mostly from Renaissance traditions and produced work featuring predominantly White models. This gap of racial representation in cinematographic pedagogy is stark and has long been overlooked. This article mounts an enquiry into the lack of diversity in cinematography education, examining how different aesthetic traditions, such as Asian ink paintings, could pave new ways for decolonising the conventional conceptions of lighting ratios. Drawing on qualitative and quantitative case studies undertaken in university workshops, I discuss how students respond to Black and Asian artwork as visual references when they are tasked with lighting models with non-White skin tones to accommodate the different reflectance of their skins. By comparing the learning outcomes and current industry techniques for optimising screen representation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, the article evaluates how students respond to learning from modern artwork that promotes diverse identities, and argues for the benefits of integrating greater inclusiveness into cinematography.

Two New Traditional Neighborhoods for the Town of Rozzano, Milan

Jonathan Weatherill

A town of 42,000 inhabitants in the agricultural belt on the south side of Milan, Rozzano was developed in the 1960s and 1970s on the Soviet suburban model to house migrant workers from the south. The stock of modular cement high-rises is now deteriorating rapidly and will not be restored or replaced with similar buildings. The town council intends to replace this fabric with one that is more livable, following the principles of New Urbanism. Two projects are being developed for new mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods on municipal sites. The projects will become part of the town’s Development Plan and the sites will be offered to developers who are to build the new quarters as designed. The results will serve as examples of how to renew Rozzano – using traditional local building models of urban, rural, and agricultural architecture. The initiative is a chance to create a ground-breaking example of suburban sprawl repair.

Architecture expression: Synthesized architectural expressions in Mayor’s office building of Kupang City

Reginaldo Christophori Lake, Fransiscus X. Eddy Arinto, Yohanes Djarot Purbadi et al.

Efforts to display the expression of the functions and local identities of buildings are merely copying ornamental variations of vernacular architectural elements. As a result, the relation among function-form-meaning remain unseen. This study aims to explain the application of the concept of synthesized architectural expressions on government owned buildings. Based on the research objectives, the Mayor’s office building of Kupang City was chosen as the object of this case study. The initial step of this research is to elaborate the theory of archetypal anatomy and the relation of architectural function-meaning-functions. Furthermore, the observation unit is redrawn in three dimensions and analyzed based on ordering principle of balance and orientation. The analysis shows that the interpretation of the appearance of Mayor's office building of Kupang City displays monumental, formal, local expressions and represents democratic ideologies. Interpretation of synthesized expressions occurs in the dominant aspects of local architecture in the elements of the roof, walls and entrance columns. The results of this study confirm that the concept of synthesized expression plays an important role in the midst of change pressure and for the sustainability of architecture nowadays.

PASTORAL MOTIF IN THE MOLDOVAN BOOK GRAPHICS (1945–2010)

Rocaciuc Victoria

One can meet illustrations with pastoral motif in the creation of Moldovan graphic artists of the period between 1945-2010.These illustrations can be divided into several categories: a shepherd’s portrait with his pipe, double portrait (male and female) on the background of rustic scenery, genre scenes and figurative compositions, including multifigurative and nonfigurative, with landscape. At the same time, all landscape examples in the illustrations of the native graphic artists demonstrate the variety of formal and stylistic concepts and principles of approach, the level of the authors’ mastery and technique attested at different historical stages. The present study offers one of the possible ways of structuring pictures with pastoral motifs.

High-Performance Concrete. Innovation and Supply Chain for Public Art and Urban Furniture

Rossella Maspoli

The current availability of UHPC (Ultra-High-Performance Concrete) concrete mixes with an adaptive and multi-performance behaviour has transformed the concept of ‘matter’ itself, allowing the construction of complex shapes and designs, and boosting the use of the compound in different sectors, thus opening new design paths following the concept of ‘non-standard’ in advanced neo-handicraft production processes. The results of technology research on the concrete compounds are analyzed in terms of how they have offered a type of mix that allows an expansion of the creative and ‘on-demand’ manufacturing process for self-supporting urban furniture and public art elements. The results and outlook of the supply chains are outlined in terms of performance, adjustment to standards, costs, network-building, and new market.

The Character of Nighttime Architecture on Letjen Soeprapto Street at Semarang Old Town

Ariadi Susanto

Since the old town of Semarang preened to be proposed to UNESCO as a heritage city, many tourists have been visiting the area during the day and night, especially the Letjen Suprapto street, which is the main corridor of the old town of Semarang. Business people also help enliven the activity by reviving old buildings that were not functioning. Facade is an important element in architecture and becomes a major concern in strengthening the character of colonial architecture in the old town of Semarang. Architecture that is characterized by door openings and windows with a height and width with thick walls, gives the impression of space that is more pronounced in the composition of architectural elements in the facade of the building. At night, the role of artificial lighting attached to the outer walls of the building, lighting from inside the building, and lighting the environment will lead to different perceptions of the facade of the building. Parts of the dark facade elements can be a bright part and vice versa, as part of the visual relationship between the front and inside of the building which shows the existence of a figure-ground relation in the scope of the facade of the building. In order to examine the character of nighttime architecture in this corridor, reviews are done on several buildings that have the composition of facade elements and use artificial lighting as a building factor for nighttime architecture. Keywords: nighttime architecture, artificial lighting, building facade

Aria Stark, warrior maiden?

Carlos Brito Oliveira, Aline Batista Rodrigues

This article addresses in its content an analysis on the character Arya Stark of the literary work, the chronicles of Ice and Fire, of the author George R.R. Martin. For this, the study was directed by the study about gender (GALVÃO, 1998), namely, the understanding of the term damsel-warrior and its importance in relation to social issues pertinent to female experience, especially in the literary description. The purpose of analyzing the character is to establish a debate about the feminine 'image' in the work, through Arya and a comparison with the experience of the woman in the contemporary society, being, therefore, the theoretical concepts, through bibliographical revision On the ethos (AMOSSY, 2014, EGGS, 2014) and the enunciative scene (MAINGUENAU, 2014) help in the argumentative constitution for a better understanding of the discursive types that are in the social core historically and that reflect in the analyzed work. The result of the research, from the studies of the theoretical basis, was convergent to elucidation of the social constitution that the discourse has. Thus, it is relevant to note that understanding how discourses are defined and expressed through literature continues to reveal the barriers that result in occasional domains of groups over others.

Modos de ser professor-artista

Marcelo Forte

The MFA in Creative Writing: The Uses of a “Useless” Credential

C. Childress, A. Gerber

Over half of today’s Masters of Fine Arts programs in creative writing in the United States were founded after the year 2000. Has the MFA-CW become a necessary credential for novelists? Relying on participant observation field research in the American literary field and interviews with authors, publishers, MFA graduates, and instructors, this work focuses on a paradox: Despite widespread agreement that the credential doesn’t “teach” enrollees to be a good writers or open up a pathway to a professional writing career, many involved in the literary field hold an MFA-CW. In this paper, we look at the uses of the MFA-CW, finding that although the degree serves little if any jurisdictional or closure-related functions it is made useful in a variety of ways: for students as a symbolic resource for artistic identity, for working writers as a source of income and community, and for editors in publishing houses as a signal for possible marketing and publicity potential.
