Education about epilepsy plays a vital role in reducing stigma, improving seizure response, and preventing school dropout among affected learners. Despite this importance, there is a lack of a structured conceptual framework guiding epilepsy education in primary schools, where children’s foundational learning and social development take place. This study aims to develop a conceptual framework that integrates epilepsy education into the life skills curriculum to reduce epilepsy-related stigma from an early age. A qualitative multi-methods approach was employed during the empirical phase, which was conducted in two stages using an exploratory–descriptive design. Data were collected from teachers, life skills education advisors (LEAs), and learners to explore their views on incorporating epilepsy education into the life skills curriculum of primary schools. The findings informed the development of a conceptual framework guided by the Three-Legged Stool Model and Dickoff’s Practice-Oriented Theory. This educational framework is tailored for primary school settings and highlights the roles of learners and teachers in promoting self-esteem through knowledge acquisition, value formation, and skill development, all underpinned by the Ubuntu philosophy.

AbstractThis review article surveys recent books that explore black women’s integral role in the labor history of Latin America and the Caribbean. As emancipated Latin American and Caribbean black women transitioned away from slave labor, they faced intense, enduring racial and gender discrimination in the labor market. Despite these hostile conditions, these black women tirelessly resisted and rebelled against oppression. Moving beyond the framework of black women as mere contributors to social, political, and economic systems, the reviewed books’ authors center black women as historically inextricable from these foundational elements that sustain the region.

Digital storytelling has been applied in research in varied contexts and with varied purposes. Implicit in the process of digital storytelling is the potential to develop and/or enhance a range of individual skills (e.g., multimedia, literacy, communication, etc.). However, further research is needed to gain a deeper understanding of the potential impact of digital storytelling on skill enhancement for disabled youth. This paper provides an overview of Phase 1 of the study “My life. My story: The Youth Digital Storytelling Project” that utilized elements of a community-based participatory action research approach to host a peer-facilitated digital storytelling workshop for young adults with developmental disabilities aimed at capturing and sharing their lived experiences with, knowledge of, and perspectives on significant life-stage transitions in the areas of education, employment, or living. The results from the pre- and post-workshop questionnaires suggest that the participants improved skills in media literacy, communication, and leadership. Additionally, the participants highlighted the importance of considering the delivery format, fostering connections, and enhancing self-confidence in the development of the workshop’s design and delivery. This research adds to the extant literature demonstrating the potential of digital storytelling as a pedagogical tool, offering implications for the design and implementation of online workshops for disabled youth.

Abstract Using a micro dataset from labour force survey of Turkey and employing a multinomial logistic regression, this paper examines the determinants of mere overeducation, mere field of study mismatch and full-mismatch (who are both overeducated and field of study mismatched simultaneously). The target group consists of full-time wage-based employees who graduated from higher education and are aged 20–65. The determinants of mismatch are analysed under four variable groups which are labour market context, demography, field of study and job-specific characteristics. In line with the earlier empirical evidence, we find that the unfavourable economic conditions at the time of entry into the labour market might affect the behavioural pattern of individuals while searching for a matching job. Moreover, the sharp increase in university graduates increased further the fierce competition for the limited jobs available in the labour market, and resulted in a high likelihood of mismatch especially for the recent graduates. In sum, the estimation results yield that any mismatch category is responsive to those determinants where fully-mismatched employees are more responsive. Hence, we propose that the policy implications should better focus on the full-mismatch category.

Introduction: The return to work of all workers suffering from occupational diseases and work-related injuries is regulated by the Indonesian government. This does not apply to employees with nonwork-related chronic illnesses. Workers with chronic illnesses often encounter many obstacles when returning to work, greatly affecting their intention to return to work. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors that could affect work readiness among patients with chronic diseases and business owners. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. The study population included all patients with chronic disease in Indonesia. The research sample used a simple random sampling technique, comprising 332 people. Data were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression tests. Results: There was an effect of 17.1% between age, gender, marital status, years of service, and employment status on the return to work readiness of patients with chronic diseases. The type of company and the presence of employees with chronic diseases in the company can affect the return to work readiness of business owners by 25.4%. Conclusion: Based on this finding, special support from different sectors such as governments, non-governmental organizations, and awareness raising by businesses for people with chronic diseases is needed so that they can return to work. It's ready.

Based on the twofold observation that sociologists run the risk of imposing issues and themes on their interviewees that are sometimes foreign to them, and that interviewees’ ability to speak about work is more or less impeded in a number of circumstances, Pascal Cesaro (filmmaker) and Pierre Fournier (sociologist) propose to conduct surveys using video-elicitation. The interview they give here shows the heuristic potential of the approach, while also exposing the difficulties of the undertaking and its pitfalls. They go into detail about their practice and the reasons for the choices it entailed, such as selecting the sequences to be debated or favoring fiction as the genre of images to be presented to the interviewees. The result is a sociological documentary, both rigorous and stimulating to watch, from which they have subsequently produced an interactive documentary, visible on the web, to explain their approach.
Identifying the growth in health expenditures and the factors affecting expenditure is a global problem. Accordingly, based on the recent developments in the economic growth literature, the determinants of health expenditures in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with similar economic development levels were analyzed within the framework of misery index and economic development. This study considers the data set and accessibility of the variables in the analysis, conducted for 34 OECD countries covering 2001–2019. In addition to the real gross domestic product per capita, the economic development indicator of the countries, this study analyzed the misery index, which is the macroeconomic performance indicator, the effects of the urban population, life expectancy at birth, household expenditures, and political stability as a state-institutional factor on health expenditures with the non-additive fixed-effect panel quantile regression method. According to the findings, the effect of the misery index and gross domestic product per capita on health expenditures at each quantile level was positive. In line with the findings, for governments to suppress growth in health expenditures, revising the health system would potentially be more effective than improving macroeconomic conditions.

Since the initial response to the Covid-19 labor crisis, the United States has faced a series of issues that raise questions as to the success of the initial measures taken, as well as the potential need for future legislation. Just as the United States took a piecemeal approach to shutting down, it has taken the same approach to reopening. With political pressure mounting to reopen the economy in full, parts of the U.S. are in medical crisis and many legal issues remain to be addressed.

One of the main factors influencing the country's economic growth is human potential. The weak social policy of the state, namely, the perfection of the health care system, education, social protection of the population, employment, and the law-enforcement system, leads to negative consequences for the loss of the human potential of the country. In turn, this dynamics is characterized by irreversible losses of human potential as a result of illnesses and the emigration of able-bodied citizens abroad, the loss of "intellectual (intellectual) potential", the refusal of young people to give birth to children due to their low standard of living, and lack of confidence in the future. Losing Ukraine's human potential may in turn slow down economic development in the middle of the country, to the loss of the traditionally high level of human potential of Ukraine and, by weakening the country's overall potential, to the risk of territorial claims of neighboring countries.
In 2011 Walmart's bid to buy a controlling stake in South Africa's Massmart Holdings, Inc. went before the country's Competition Commission and Competition Tribunal, both of which would determine whether to grant the merger outright or to place conditions on it. Massmart Holdings comprises a number of branded subsidiaries in the South African market, including Walmart-style general merchandise dealers, electronics retailers, do-it-yourself building suppliers, and food wholesalers—Game, Dion, Builder's Warehouse, and Makro, respectively—as well as the more recently acquired food retailer, Cambridge Food. South African unions, most prominently the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu), with support from the Global Union Federation UNI Global and, in the United States, the United Food and Commercial Workers, fought the merger.

Abstract

Background

Occupational or environmental exposure to asbestos fibres is associated with pleural and parenchymal lung diseases. A histopathologic hallmark of exposure to asbestos is the presence in lung parenchyma of the so-called asbestos bodies. They are the final product of biomineralization processes resulting in deposition of endogenous iron and organic matter (mainly proteins) around the inhaled asbestos fibres. For shedding light on the formation mechanisms of asbestos bodies it is of fundamental importance to characterize at the same length scales not only their structural morphology and chemical composition but also to correlate them to the possible alterations in the local composition of the surrounding tissues. Here we report the first correlative morphological and chemical characterization of untreated paraffinated histological lung tissue samples with asbestos bodies by means of soft X-ray imaging and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) microscopy, which reveals new features in the elemental lateral distribution.

Results

The X-ray absorption and phase contrast images and the simultaneously monitored XRF maps of tissue samples have revealed the location, distribution and elemental composition of asbestos bodies and associated nanometric structures. The observed specific morphology and differences in the local Si, Fe, O and Mg content provide distinct fingerprints characteristic for the core asbestos fibre and the ferruginous body. The highest Si content is found in the asbestos fibre, while the shell and ferruginous bodies are characterized by strongly increased content of Mg, Fe and O compared to the adjacent tissue. The XRF and SEM-EDX analyses of the extracted asbestos bodies confirmed an enhanced Mg deposition in the organic asbestos coating.

Conclusions

The present report demonstrates the potential of the advanced synchrotron-based X-ray imaging and microspectroscopy techniques for studying the response of the lung tissue to the presence of asbestos fibres. The new results obtained by simultaneous structural and chemical analysis of tissue specimen have provided clear evidence that Mg, in addition to Fe, is also involved in the formation mechanisms of asbestos bodies. This is the first important step to further thorough investigations that will shed light on the physiopathological role of Mg in tissue response to the asbestos toxicity.
