The impact of honors education on students’ academic and innovative achievements: a longitudinal study in China (2011–2021)

Jie Yu, Dingyue Tian, Zhuojun Wang et al.

Honors education has ascended as an integral element within the sphere of global higher education, concentrating on fostering individuals who exhibit creativity and a history of innovative achievements. Despite its widespread adoption, there remains a scarcity of exhaustive longitudinal studies investigating its effects and associated variables. To address this shortcoming, this study deploys rigorous structural equation modeling (SEM) and linear regression analyses to meticulously examine a dataset comprising 319 students, who enrolled over a decade (2011–2021) in a prestigious honors college at a preeminent university in China. The primary objective is to discern the predictive efficacy of Chinese honors education selection criteria on students’ creative and academic accomplishments. This endeavor strives to clarify the complex interplay among students’ creative personalities, academic performance, creative achievements, and standardized college entrance exam scores. The findings emphasize that individuals who exhibit enhanced creative personality traits are predisposed to elevated levels of both innovation and academic attainment (β = 0.170, p  = 0.017). Additionally, a significant inverse relationship is observed between general learning aptitude and subsequent academic performance (β = −0.008, p = 0.023), while students pursuing science disciplines demonstrate superior innovation outcomes compared to their liberal arts counterparts (β = 0.125, p  = 0.048). Interestingly, neither gender nor general academic prowess exerts significant predictive power over collegiate innovation (β  = −0.002, p = 0.134). These empirical insights equip policymakers and scholars with nuanced perspectives on the determinants shaping students’ refined educational experiences, thereby inciting critical discourse concerning the refinement of selection criteria and the imperative of nurturing students’ creative proclivities.

Shaping New Identities in the First Intermediate Period (2160–2050 BC): Archers and Warriors in the Iconography of Upper Egypt

Juan Carlos Moreno García

The First Intermediate Period was a time of cultural innovation and social competition. The collapse of the monarchy and the cultural productions it sponsored paved the way for the emergence of new artistic and cultural expressions, better adapted to a context of fragile authorities and competing local powers. Warfare between rival regional polities became frequent, so tomb scenes and funerary stelae from Middle and Upper Egypt began depicting military actions and men posing as archers. Moreover, local authorities sought the support of local levies and fellow citizens to strengthen and legitimate their fragile rule. Therefore, many monuments and inscriptions celebrate successful command, effective leadership, and caring about one’s city and its inhabitants. These conditions favoured the emergence of cultural innovations and social values aiming to express new identities. Depicting weapons, mainly bows, was crucial in this respect in some areas of Southern Egypt and echoed comparable phenomena occurring in neighbour regions like Nubia and the Levant.

QUEER OPPORTUNISM: STATE, MEDIA, AND LGBT+ RIGHTS IN THE CONTEXT OF THAI BOYS LOVE (BL) SERIES INDUSTRY

Igor Leonardo de Santana Torres

Relations of appropriation of the image and agenda of minority groups have been increasingly frequent at different levels and contexts. This would be no different with the LGBT+ population, and was reflected in the Thai government’s support for the BL industry and their little to no attention to LGBT+ issues, especially marriage equality. Drawing on ethnographic research among BL series fans on Twitter and Telegram for nine months (between June 2021 and February 2022) and discussions about politics and media, pink money and pinkwashing, and homonationalism, I will introduce the concept of queer opportunism to name a contradictory relationship between state institutions or any others and the LGBT+ agenda based on fan discourses and the Thai state’s stance on the BL industry.

The Image of a Doctor in Modern Russian Cinema of a New “Moral Concern”

Smagina Svetlana A.

The article discusses a number of Russian films where the main characters are doctors (Ragin by K. Serebrennikov, Ward No 6 by K. Shakhnazarov, Wild Field by M. Kalatozishvili, Arrhythmia by B. Khlebnikov, and Doctor by A. Temnikov). Through such characters cinema examines society for its humanity, civic responsibility, moral values, and viability. The social sentiments of the 2000s, which can be designated as moral anxiety, find their expression on the screen in the person of a medical profession who diagnoses society for its traumatization and offers solutions. Analysing the image of a doctor on the screen, the author formulates the cultural codes behind the representation of such characters in modern Russian cinema and draws conclusions about the urgent demand of society for spirituality accumulated in artistic images.

In-Person and Remote Workshops for People With Neurocognitive Disorders: Recommendations From a Delphi Panel

V. Manera, L. Agüera-Ortiz, F. Askenazy et al.

Workshops using arts and board games are forms of non-pharmacological intervention widely employed in seniors with neurocognitive disorders. However, clear guidelines on how to conduct these workshops are missing. The objective of the Art and Game project (AGAP) was to draft recommendations on the structure and content of workshops for elderly people with neurocognitive disorders and healthy seniors, with a particular focus on remote/hybrid workshops, in which at least a part of the participants is connected remotely. Recommendations were gathered using a Delphi methodology. The expert panel (N = 18) included experts in the health, art and/or board games domains. They answered questions via two rounds of web-surveys, and then discussed the results in a plenary meeting. Some of the questions were also shared with the general public (N = 101). Both the experts and the general public suggested that organizing workshops in a hybrid format (some face-to-face sessions, some virtual session) is feasible and interesting for people with neurocognitive disorders. We reported guidelines on the overall structure of workshops, practical tips on how to organize remote workshops, and a SWOT analysis of the use of remote/hybrid workshops. The guidelines may be employed by clinicians to decide, based on their needs and constraints, what interventions and what kind of workshop format to employ, as well as by researcher to standardize procedures to assess the effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments for people with neurocognitive disorders.

Music Workshops as Social Aesthetic Contributions to Cultivating Community Sensibilities

A. Andriolo, Darrin Hodgetts, C. Sonn et al.

Abstract. Human connection and mutual exploration through engagements in the arts, in general, and music, more specifically, have been core features of community life in many settings for millennia. The importance of such modes of collective engagement has also gained renewed interest among psychologists. This article explores the use of arts-based practice in Brazilian organizational settings. Embracing the theoretical perspective of the bricoleur, we adopt a social aesthetic perspective as a basis for considering the cultivation of a sense of community and togetherness through music workshops. Our focus is on shifts in the social sensibilities of participants as they engage with each other through music. This article contributes to qualitative research in community and critical social psychology, where a turn to community arts is gaining increasing traction.

“What about Bach? Where is the feeling there?” Arseniy Tarkovsky’s gramophone record collection at the State Central Film Museum and Andrey Tarkovsky’s Sound Universe

Malaya, E. R.

The author of the article puts into academic circulation materials from the State Central Film Museum: the collection of Arseny Tarkovsky’s records, which had a significant impact on the development of his son, Andrei Tarkovsky, the famous Russian director. The collection of records was donated to the State Central Film Museum by Irma Rausch-Tarkovskaya, actress, director, first wife of Andrei Tarkovsky, in 1995. The article briefly analyzes the cultural context: the love of music in the Tarkovsky family, the director’s interest in music in his youth. Sound design in Tarkovsky’s films includes not only original music or citation world classics, but also carefully designed noises. They consist of natural sounds or sounds of artificial origin. Moreover, they are designed to represent not reality, but poetic reality. Sound design plays an increasingly prominent role in Tarkovsky’s films during his professional development. As he accumulates of professional and work experience, his philosophy becomes more deep and profound. The author of the article pays special attention to the analysis of some important musical works which had a great influence on Tarkovsky’s films.

Drawing in the Digital Age: Observations and Implications for Education

Seymour Simmons

This paper looks at recent examples of how drawing is advancing into the digital age: in London: the annual symposium on Thinking Through Drawing; in Paris: an exhibition at the Grand Palais, Artistes et Robots; a conference at the Institut d’études avancées on Space-Time Geometries and Movement in the Brain and in the Arts; and, at the Drawing Lab, Cinéma d’Été. These events are contrasted to a recent decline in drawing instruction in pre-professional programs of art, architecture, and design as well as in pre-K12 art education due largely to the digital revolution. In response, I argue for the ongoing importance of learning to draw both in visual art and in general education at all levels in the digital age.

A return to understanding: Making liberal education valuable again

Clara Haberberger

Abstract Critical literature on liberal education since the 1990s discerns two main trends which pose a serious threat to liberal education in the contemporary world. These are, firstly, the trend of liberal arts colleges offering a more professional curriculum and, secondly, the trend among universities and colleges in general to promote values which used to be inherently liberal. The result is that liberal arts colleges risk becoming superfluous as educational institutions, given that they no longer add anything distinctive in today’s society. This article proposes that a return in their core curriculum to more traditional philosophies of liberal education could supply liberal arts colleges with the necessary measure of distinction to preserve their inherent value to society.
