A travel journal by a preacher during the annual Pentecost prayer meetings in the Dutch Reformed Church:
J.-A. van den Berg
A travel journal by a preacher during the annual Pentecost prayer meetings in the Dutch Reformed Church is an autoethnographic description of, and reflection on historical, geographical, theological, as well as intimate and personal topics. Of prime importance is an auto-ethnographic description of two experiences by the researcher, namely two series of Pentecost prayer meetings which he conducted in May 2024 in two congregations of the Dutch Reformed
Church. These two experiences have, as background, the researcher’s personal and collegial relationship with the receiver of the Festschrift, that conveys the academic research they did together over the past few years. Throughout the course of this article, these descriptions are linked to perspectives arising from a collegial relationship with the work of the receiver of the Festschrift. Arising from these reflections, perspectives are provided for the ministry of Pentecost prayer meetings in the Dutch Reformed Church.

The Healing Power of the Body of Christ: An Ecclesial and Neurological Argument for Social Connection Despite Social Distancing
Christopher Krall
The modern crisis of social isolation is a devastating and lethal phenomenon encompassing many dimensions of human life: the sociological, psychological, neuro-psychological, and spiritual. Loneliness and disengagement leave existential longings within the hearts and minds of persons, causing depression, anxiety, and the fragmentation of community. Yves Congar’s ecclesiological and pneumatological theology explicates the fulfillment of humanity’s deepest longings when individuals gather as a communal body realized in the ideal form of the Church, a supra-ecclesial community. When people share their unique charisms gained through the grace of the Holy Spirit for the good of the community, a healing grace permeates into individual hearts and restores communal relationships. The article has three sections. The first section describes the detrimental consequences of isolation and the spiritual perils of social distancing and human separation. The second develops Congar’s theological insights into how community allows for participation in the life of the Trinitarian God. The third section applies Congar’s theological principles to practical pastoral healing remedies for the tendencies of division within the present age, especially dealing with the global pandemic. When each person becomes receptive to the action of the Holy Spirit, who unifies the Body of Christ, the fullness of life emerges.

Bundan Batı Hıristiyanları, İslamiyet’i, onun peygamberini ve kutsal kitabını, tarih boyunca sürekli eleştirmişlerdir. Filibeli Ahmed eserinde Dozy’nin Hz.

The kingdom of heaven and Matthew 10
Jacob J. Scholtz
This article proposes that the mission discourse in Matthew 10 is a single mission assignment that covers two distinct time periods when the gospel of the kingdom is preached. This assignment commenced during Christ’s first advent when the 12 apostles preached the gospel of the kingdom only in Israel. However, as a result of ‘this generation’ committing the unpardonable sin, this assignment became postponed until it will be resumed in the Tribulation when the coming King will authorise Jewish messengers to preach the gospel of the kingdom again – this time as a witness to all the nations. Based on this view of the mission discourse in Matthew 10, this article proposes a chiastic structure for Matthew 9:36−11:1a. Each section of this text will then be briefly discussed. Although the Church can make applications from this discourse, it is argued that Matthew 10:5b−42 does not refer to the Church age.

The cultural and historical significance of malopo ritual: a Pedi perspective
M. E. K. Lebaka
Indeed, the implicit hypothesis that “there is little possibility, if any, for the Pedi traditional healers to experience the supernatural form of healing without performing music and dancing to it” raises the issue of “What makes the dance potent as a healing therapy?” or ‘What is the role of music in such healing processes?’. This article is a result of a guided investigation carried out in order to answer these questions. The primary sources for data collection were literature reviews, informal interviews, observations and recordings. During the study, informal discussions with traditional healers and their trainees revealed that participation in malopo rituals enables community members to inherit their music tradition. The impression created during interviews and observations was that Pedi traditional healers perform malopo songs to communicate with the ancestors. The results suggest that malopo rituals are aimed at enriching the personal and social life of the Pedi community.

Tarihten Günümüze Tekbîr Ve Tehlîl Nidâlarının Sloganik Değeri Üzerine Bir İnceleme
Fatih Koca

Perspectives on mission in the book of Zechariah
Daniel, O'Kennedy F.
The prophetic book of Zechariah is often neglected when studying the mission of God and his church. Zechariah originated during the post-exilic era in Jerusalem and there are many similarities between this community and the post-apartheid community in South Africa. There are several references to nations and peoples in Zechariah, but most of them refer to Gods judgment against the nations. This article focuses on three key missionary passages namely Zechariah 2:11 (15), 8:20-23 and 14:16. The prophet visualises a faith community where the other nations will come and join them to experience the presence of God. Zechariah 2:11 uses covenantal language and emphasises that many nations shall be my people. Churches struggle to attract non-believers in our time. The study of Zechariah can help the church to be more missional so that non-believers will utter the words of Zechariah 8:23: Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.

The church's response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India
Nalini Arles
I gratefully remember working with Reverend Charles in a rehabilitation centre in the US and later with my HIV-positive friends in India. Their laughter, courage and resilience reminded me that it is not they who are HIV-positive but it is we who are all HIV-positive. In this article I would like to reflect on the cultural context of HIV/AIDS in India, its prevalence and the Church’s response to this epidemic.

"...but the poor opted for the evangelicals!" - Evangelicals, poverty and prosperity
Gideon van der Watt
This article discusses developments in the historical discourse on evangelicalism, poverty and prosperity. Have the global evangelical celebrations of 2010 bridged the dichotomy between social responsibility (Ecumenicals) and the proclamation of salvation (Evangelicals)? The article focuses on the rapid growth of a specific brand of evangelicalism, namely “prosperity faith” as predisposition within the neo-Pentecostal churches, especially throughout sub-Saharan Africa. In an appreciative, but critical enquiry, this article reflects on the radical claim of dispensing “health and wealth” to the desperately poor. Are proponents of prosperity faith putting forward a credible answer to poverty, a new entrepreneurial and creative evangelical response to the call for social responsibility? Or will the poor ultimately be disillusioned? What challenges are posed to Evangelicals?

Pietism and the manner in which the doctrine of the so-called second blessing is experienced: perspectives from Practical Theology
The aim of the research underlying this article was to explore the experience of individuals supporting the form of pietism known as the so-called “second blessing” that implies suc- cessive works of grace. In this form of pietism sanctification is overemphasised at the expense of justification. In this article, a basis-theoretical assessment of core elements is followed by empirical-qualitative research data, more specifically the results of narrative analysis. A purposive sample of nine participants was used. The research data was obtained by means of a semi-structured questionnaire that the participants had to com- plete, as well as by a semi-structured interview that was con- ducted with each participant individually. The content analysis of the research data indicates possible reasons why some in- dividuals favour this form of pietism, why some individuals do not favour this doctrine, why some individuals remain sup-porters of this form of pietism, and how some individuals are “freed” from it. Guidelines are given on a practice-theoretical level concerning the way in which the outcome of these results can be applied. An indication is given of the ways in which spiritual leaders, counsellors and other believers may find it useful to utilise the research data in their pastoral counselling of persons who practise this form of pietism.

Chapter 2 - Path
J-A. van den Berg
From text: In the act of embarking on the path towards design and construction, movement is architectonically embodied, in the sense that “the path is that which we follow” (Norberg-Schulz 2000:144). A stop is made at the first station, namely that of the gallery, for the purpose of exploring the different research paths that have been made possible by, inter alia, practical theology and futures studies.

P. J. Strauss
The ecclesiastical authority of the assemblies in church as in the church order of the Dutch Reformed Church
The point in discussion in this article is Article 20.1 of the church order of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC). In accept- ing the first version of this church order, the first general synod of the DRC in 1962 used the church order of 1959 of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (RCN) as an example. The exact wording of Article 20.1 happened to be part of the latter.
Article 20.1 gives an indication of the authority of assemblies because this is nowhere else attended to in the church order of the DRC. It explains that the authority of church governing bodies like assemblies comes from Christ. He as the actual Head of the church lends authority to these assemblies, without abdicating his position as the Head of his church. He remains the Source and Owner of ecclesiastical authority.
This means that ecclesiastical authority is founded and based on the Word of God by which it sumultaneously is limited. In exercising it’s authority, an assembly is also bound to do it in accordance with the character of the church. To speak of authority in the church is not in conflict with the character of the church as a community of believers connected by love.

Stuart Cloete's construction of Voortrekker religion in Turning Wheels
F. Hale
Stuart Cloete’s novel of 1937, Turning Wheels, was unquestionably the most controversial of many fictional reconstructions of the Great Trek, a book which fell foul of Afrikaner nationalism and whose further importation into the Union of South Africa was long consequently banned. Religious motifs reflecting the popularised Calvinism of the Voortrekkers figure prominently in the text. Cloete depicted these migrants as people of faith whose removal to a new Canaan entailed both internal strife and repeated clashes with indigenous African tribes. Among the thematic elements are belief in divine purpose and providence, postfigurative uses of the Pentateuchal characters Moses and Abraham, the image of the clergy, the failure of religious belief to maintain ethical norms among the Voortrekkers and the contribution of an ethnocentric distortion of Christianity to disharmonious relations with black Africans.
