Hamid Dizdar’s Library – Half a Century of Preservation and Heritage

Aida Huskić

Goal: This paper aims to shed light on the figure and work of Hamid Dizdar (1907–1967) as an exceptional bibliophile, writer and cultural worker, with special emphasis on the acquisition of his personal library, which was realized in 1968 thanks to the involvement of individuals and institutions from Tešanj. The paper seeks to preserve the memory of Dizdar and point to the significance of his library as part of the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methodology: Descriptive and historical research method was used, with analysis of archival documents, specialised literature, commission reports and briefs. Data was systemized chronologically and thematically with the aim to present the context of creation, acquisition and preservation of Hamid Dizdar’s Library. Results: Paper confirms that Hamid Dizdar’s Library with over 17.200 library items, represents one of most important private collections in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fund holds rarities, periodicals, archival materials and manuscripts of eminent intellectuals. With acquisition of this library, its removal from the country is prevented and an exceptional part of national cultural heritage is saved. Social relevance: Preservation of this library from its removal from the country and its preservation during aggression on B&H has strong symbolic and cultural identity value. Originality/value: For the first time, the paper systematically shows the history of the formation, purchase and preservation of the Hamid Dizdar’s Library, and highlights its inestimable value for BH culture and book history.   Ključne riječi: Hamid Dizdar, život i djelo, kulturno naslijeđe, privatne biblioteke, legati, otkup biblioteke, Opća biblioteka Tešanj Keywords:

Noncommutative Knörrer periodicity via equivariantization

Xiao-Wu Chen, Wenchao Wu

We establish noncommutative Knörrer periodicity for projective-module factorizations over an arbitrary ring, using the equivariantization theory with respect to various actions by a cyclic group of order two. We obtain an explicit quasi-inverse of the periodicity. We compare the periodicity with a certain tensor functor between big singularity categories.

The complexity of computing the period and the exponent of a digraph

Stefan Kiefer, Andrew Ryzhikov

The period of a strongly connected digraph is the greatest common divisor of the lengths of all its cycles. The period of a digraph is the least common multiple of the periods of its strongly connected components. These notions play an important role in the theory of Markov chains and the analysis of powers of nonnegative matrices. While the time complexity of computing the period is well-understood, little is known about its space complexity. We show that the problem of computing the period of a digraph is NL-complete, even if all its cycles are contained in the same strongly connected component. However, if the digraph is strongly connected, we show that this problem becomes L-complete. For primitive digraphs (that is, strongly connected digraphs of period one), there always exists a number $m$ such that there is a path of length exactly $m$ between every two vertices. We show that computing the smallest such $m$, called the exponent of a digraph, is NL-complete. The exponent of a primitive digraph is a particular case of the index of convergence of a nonnegative matrix, which we also show to be computable in NL, and thus NL-complete.

Collaborative collection development: a MedPrint case report

Wyoma vanDuinkerken, Zachary Valdes

Background: In response to several of Texas’ largest medical libraries being forced to discard all serial print holdings, the Texas A&M University System and University of Texas System’s Joint Library Facility (JLF) staff worked to help provide a solution to save and store these resources. This process fire-started a comprehensive effort by JLF staff to contact the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and devise a blueprint that would be used to help save and preserve all serial medical resources listed in NLM’s medical retention program. Case Presentation: In an unprecedented approach, the Texas A&M JLF staff launched efforts to collect and preserve the complete holdings range of all NLM MedPrint periodical runs. This case report details the planning and steps JLF staff took to accomplish this feat; highlights important matters of consideration for the medical community which heavily relies upon continuous access to MedPrint materials; and provides insight on the apparent preservation vulnerabilities these materials increasingly face in an environment where digitization may create a false sense of security. Discussion: By May 2021, JLF had collected complete title runs up to year 2000 for 202 of the 254 MedPrint titles, which consists of more than twelve thousand volumes. These efforts proved particularly beneficial in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced NLM to halt ILL processing from their print collection. During this time, JLF was uniquely positioned to meet and respond to the historic high number of medical literature ILL requests it received during this time.

Acupuncture for the prevention of chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Yuqian Yan, Jesús López‐Alcalde, Linxin Zhang et al.

Abstract Purpose To assess the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for the prevention of chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), with a specific intention on exploring sources of between‐study variation in treatment effects. Methods MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodicals Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared acupuncture to sham acupuncture or usual care (UC). The main outcome is complete control (no vomiting episodes and/or no more than mild nausea) of CINV. GRADE approach was used to rate the certainty of evidence. Results Thirty‐eight RCTs with a total of 2503 patients were evaluated. Acupuncture in addition to UC may increase the complete control of acute vomiting (RR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.25; 10 studies) and delayed vomiting (RR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.07 to 2.00; 10 studies) when compared with UC only. No effects were found for all other review outcomes. The certainty of evidence was generally low or very low. None of the predefined moderators changed the overall findings, but in an exploratory moderator analysis we found that an adequate reporting of planned rescue antiemetics might decrease the effect size of complete control of acute vomiting (p = 0.035). Conclusion Acupuncture in addition to usual care may increase the complete control of chemotherapy‐induced acute vomiting and delayed vomiting but the certainty of evidence was very low. Well‐designed RCTs with larger sample sizes, standardized treatment regimens, and core outcome measures are needed.

<i>Gekkōsō</i> and Nakamura Yōko. Coin Shine Under the Moon: About the Gallery’s Activities and the Market for Soviet Art in Japan

V. V. Belozerov

From the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, the Gekkōsō Gallery occupied a significant niche in the exhibition exchange between the USSR and Japan, organizing exhibitions of works from the collections of leading Soviet museums in Japan (the State Russian Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Hermitage, the State Tretyakov Gallery), as well as representing the work of individual artists (D. Nalbandyan, N. Romadin, T. Salakhov, Y. Pimenov, et al.). At the same time, the gallery was actively involved in the process of exporting paintings by Soviet artists, working with the Union of Soviet Artists and socio-political organizations. The vigorous activity of the gallery director Nakamura Yōko and her chosen promotion strategy demonstrated the complex process of presenting Soviet art to Japanese consumers, associated with an attempt to de-ideologize the artists’ work while at the same time making it attractive for the art market in Japan. The process of commercialization of Soviet artists’ works and the nuances of Nakamura’s relationships with the Soviet Ministry of Culture and related organizations associated with the desire to seek the highest monetary gain and public status eventually led to the demise of Gekkōsō and its subsequent bankruptcy. This article aims to outline the gallery’s phenomenon against the background of other actors of exhibition exchange between Japan and the USSR, showing the main milestones in the history of the gallery’s cooperation with Soviet institutions. Specific attention is paid to Nakamura Yōko’s image in Soviet periodicals, her business activities and personal contacts in the USSR, as well as her reputation in Japan. Materials for the article include documents from the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF), the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI), the archive of the State Tretyakov Gallery (GTG), as well as periodical materials from the 1970s and 1980s that mention Nakamura and her gallery’s activities.

Anabolic and Antiresorptive Osteoporosis Treatment: Trends, Costs, and Sequence in a Commercially Insured Population, 2003–2021

Harsh Wadhwa, Janet Y Wu, Jennifer S Lee et al.

ABSTRACT New anabolic medications (abaloparatide and romosozumab) were recently approved for osteoporosis, and data suggest that prescribing antiresorptive medications after a course of anabolic medications offers better outcomes. This study aimed to characterize prescription trends, demographics, geographical distributions, out‐of‐pocket costs, and treatment sequences for anabolic and antiresorptive osteoporosis medications. Using a commercial claims database (Clinformatics Data Mart), adult patients with osteoporosis from 2003 to 2021 were retrospectively reviewed and stratified based on osteoporosis medication class. Patient demographics and socioeconomic variables, provider types, and out‐of‐pocket costs were collected. Multivariable regression analyses were used to identify independent predictors of receiving osteoporosis treatment. A total of 2,988,826 patients with osteoporosis were identified; 616,635 (20.6%) received treatment. Patients who were female, Hispanic or Asian, in the Western US, had higher net worth, or had greater comorbidity burden were more likely to receive osteoporosis medications. Among patients who received medication, 31,112 (5.0%) received anabolic medication; these were more likely to be younger, White patients with higher education level, net worth, and greater comorbidity burden. Providers who prescribed the most anabolic medications were rheumatologists (18.5%), endocrinologists (16.8%), and general internists (15.3%). Osteoporosis medication prescriptions increased fourfold from 2003 to 2020, whereas anabolic medication prescriptions did not increase at this rate. Median out‐of‐pocket costs were $17 higher for anabolic than antiresorptive medications, though costs for anabolic medications decreased significantly from 2003 to 2020 (compound annual growth rate: −0.6%). A total of 8388 (1.4%) patients tried two or more osteoporosis medications, and 0.6% followed the optimal treatment sequence. Prescription of anabolic osteoporosis medications has not kept pace with overall osteoporosis treatment, and there are socioeconomic disparities in anabolic medication prescription, potentially driven by higher median out‐of‐pocket costs. Although prescribing antiresorptive medications after a course of anabolic medications offers better outcomes, this treatment sequence occurred in only 0.6% of the study cohort. © 2023 The Authors. The convergence of discrete period matrices

Felix Günther

We study compact polyhedral surfaces as Riemann surfaces and their discrete counterparts obtained through quadrilateral cellular decompositions and a linear discretization of the Cauchy-Riemann equation. By ensuring uniformly bounded interior and intersection angles of diagonals, we establish the convergence of discrete Dirichlet energies of discrete harmonic differentials with equal black and white periods to the Dirichlet energy of the corresponding continuous harmonic differential with the same periods. This convergence also extends to the discrete period matrix, with a description of the blocks of the complete discrete period matrix in the limit. Moreover, when the quadrilaterals have orthogonal diagonals, we observe convergence of discrete Abelian integrals of the first kind. Adapting the quadrangulations around conical singularities allows us to improve the convergence rate to a linear function of the maximum edge length.

Analysis of cabbage production in Russia

O. A. Razin, T. N. Surikhina

Relevance. The article analyzes the indicators of white cabbage production in Russia (by districts, subjects of the federation and categories of farms).Methodology. The object of research is the market for the production of white cabbage. The subject of the study is the current state of white cabbage production. The information base of the study was made up of data from FAO, official state statistics, the Federal Customs Service, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, Parliamentary hearings of the State Duma Committee on Agrarian Issues, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Eurasian Economic Commission, operational online messages of federal and regional levels, materials of periodicals, scientific seminars, conferences, symposiums, reflecting various aspects of the problem under study.Results. In the industrial sector of vegetable growing, the acreage of cabbage of all types in 2021, in relation to 2020, decreased by 15.8%. Over the past ten years, there has been a decrease in acreage and gross cabbage harvest in farms of all categories. There are a number of systemic problems in Russian vegetable growing that limit the increase in vegetable production and negatively affect its effectiveness: weak technical and material equipment of a significant part of farms engaged in vegetable production, outdated technical base, insufficient provision of crops with seeds of domestic production. One of the leading roles in the implementation of the policy of food security and national independence is played by the selection and seed production of white cabbage. Sanctions make it possible to carry out import substitution of varieties and hybrids of white cabbage. To date, the main task is to abandon the import of seeds of foreign selection, and therefore it is important to focus on creating new hybrids that will be of high quality, good yield, as well as resistance to diseases and pests. Modern hybrids of breeding FGBNU FNTSO and Agrofirm "Poisk" according to the results of testing in leading agricultural organizations fully meet the requirements of the market and can take a worthy place in the fields in the Russian Federation.

Definition of Normal Vertebral Morphometry Using NHANES‐II Radiographs

John A. Hipp, Trevor F. Grieco, Patrick Newman et al.

ABSTRACT A robust definition of normal vertebral morphometry is required to confidently identify abnormalities such as fractures. The Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES‐II) collected a nationwide probability sample to document the health status of the United States. Over 10,000 lateral cervical spine and 7,000 lateral lumbar spine X‐rays were collected. Demographic, anthropometric, health, and medical history data were also collected. The coordinates of the vertebral body corners were obtained for each lumbar and cervical vertebra using previously validated, automated technology consisting of a pipeline of neural networks and coded logic. These landmarks were used to calculate six vertebral body morphometry metrics. Descriptive statistics were generated and used to identify and trim outliers from the data. Descriptive statistics were tabulated using the trimmed data for use in quantifying deviation from average for each metric. The dependency of these metrics on sex, age, race, nation of origin, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) was also assessed. There was low variation in vertebral morphometry after accounting for vertebrae (eg, L1, L2), and the R2 was high for ANOVAs. Excluding outliers, age, sex, race, nation of origin, height, weight, and BMI were statistically significant for most of the variables, though the F‐statistic was very small compared to that for vertebral level. Excluding all variables except vertebra changed the ANOVA R2 very little. Reference data were generated that could be used to produce standardized metrics in units of SD from mean. This allows for easy identification of abnormalities resulting from vertebral fractures, atypical vertebral body morphometries, and other congenital or degenerative conditions. Standardized metrics also remove the effect of vertebral level, facilitating easy interpretation and enabling data for all vertebrae to be pooled in research studies. © 2022 The Authors. Bridging the gap -- the disappearance of the intermediate period gap for fully convective stars, uncovered by new ZTF rotation periods

Yuxi Lu, Jason L. Curtis, Ruth Angus et al.

The intermediate period gap, discovered by Kepler, is an observed dearth of stellar rotation periods in the temperature-period diagram at $\sim$ 20 days for G dwarfs and up to $\sim$ 30 days for early-M dwarfs. However, because Kepler mainly targeted solar-like stars, there is a lack of measured periods for M dwarfs, especially those at the fully convective limit. Therefore it is unclear if the intermediate period gap exists for mid- to late-M dwarfs. Here, we present a period catalog containing 40,553 rotation periods (9,535 periods $>$ 10 days), measured using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). To measure these periods, we developed a simple pipeline that improves directly on the ZTF archival light curves and reduces the photometric scatter by 26%, on average. This new catalog spans a range of stellar temperatures that connect samples from Kepler with MEarth, a ground-based time domain survey of bright M-dwarfs, and reveals that the intermediate period gap closes at the theoretically predicted location of the fully convective boundary ($G_{\rm BP} - G_{\rm RP} \sim 2.45$ mag). This result supports the hypothesis that the gap is caused by core-envelope interactions. Using gyro-kinematic ages, we also find a potential rapid spin-down of stars across this period gap.

Periodically Modulated Thermal Convection.

Rui Yang, K. Chong, Qi Wang et al.

Many natural and industrial turbulent flows are subjected to time-dependent boundary conditions. Despite being ubiquitous, the influence of temporal modulations (with frequency f) on global transport properties has hardly been studied. Here, we perform numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection with time periodic modulation in the temperature boundary condition and report how this modulation can lead to a significant heat flux (Nusselt number Nu) enhancement. Using the concept of Stokes thermal boundary layer, we can explain the onset frequency of the Nu enhancement and the optimal frequency at which Nu is maximal, and how they depend on the Rayleigh number Ra and Prandtl number Pr. From this, we construct a phase diagram in the 3D parameter space (f, Ra, Pr) and identify the following: (i) a regime where the modulation is too fast to affect Nu; (ii) a moderate modulation regime, where Nu increases with decreasing f, and (iii) slow modulation regime, where Nu decreases with further decreasing f. Our findings provide a framework to study other types of turbulent flows with time-dependent forcing.

PARTICIPATION OF SIDOR HOLUBOVYCH IN SOCIO-POLITICAL PROCESSES IN THE GALICIAN LANDS DURING THE WORLD WAR I

Оксана КАМІНСКА

The civic-political activity of Sydor Golubovych during the World War I was analyzed in the article based on the complex study of archive sources, periodicals and scientific literature. His role in the political organizations in Vienna during his emigration period in 1914-1915-s and after his return to L’viv in 1915-1918-s was determined. Namely, the prerequisites of reorganization of the Main Ukrainian Council into the Common Ukrainian Council, problem of political struggle among different party groups within the political circles in Galicia and Bukovina were highlighted. The main aspects of Golubovych’s activity in the Common Ukrainian Council (CUC) were revealed, within the council his main attention was drawn to the issues of the “Military bank” creation, issues related to the Ukrainian refugees, migrant workers, internees from Galicia and Bukovina, who according to the official data were 90 thou in different parts of Austria, Germany and Czech Republic. Moreover, it is mentioned that S. Golubovych was a participant of the political actions for autonomy of Ukrainian schooling, separate Ukrainian university opening in L’viv, transformation of the STC into the Ukrainian academy of science, etc. It was found that after his return to L’viv in August 1915, S. Golubovych as a member of the L’viv’s delegation of the CUC and member of the Regional Credit Union (RCU) was predominantly responsible for the problems of region’s restoration after the military actions. Simultaneously, the main attention was drawn to the busy social activity, namely he was included into the senior council at Stavropigijskyi institute – former Moscow-oriented institution transferred to the Ukrainians by the Austrian governor general Kollard, and was a founder and editor of the newspaper “Ukrayinsʹke slovo” that was the main media source in Galicia. Furthermore, during 1917-1918-s the politician frequently visited Ternopol’s region where he endeavored to keep close contacts with his electorate. A role of S. Golubovych was described before the November events of 1918, where he as a figure of the Ukrainian National Democratic Party (UNDP) and member of the Ukrainian Parliamentary Representation (UPR) participated in meetings and demonstrations’ organization devoted to the independence proclamation of the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR), peace treaty agreement in Brest-Lytovsk, was actively involved in implementation of so called “viche week” organized to support the autonomy demands of the Eastern Galicia as a separate Ukrainian territory within the Austrian monarchy, etc.
