Hamid Dizdar’s Library – Half a Century of Preservation and Heritage
Abstrak
Goal: This paper aims to shed light on the figure and work of Hamid Dizdar (1907–1967) as an exceptional bibliophile, writer and cultural worker, with special emphasis on the acquisition of his personal library, which was realized in 1968 thanks to the involvement of individuals and institutions from Tešanj. The paper seeks to preserve the memory of Dizdar and point to the significance of his library as part of the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methodology: Descriptive and historical research method was used, with analysis of archival documents, specialised literature, commission reports and briefs. Data was systemized chronologically and thematically with the aim to present the context of creation, acquisition and preservation of Hamid Dizdar’s Library. Results: Paper confirms that Hamid Dizdar’s Library with over 17.200 library items, represents one of most important private collections in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fund holds rarities, periodicals, archival materials and manuscripts of eminent intellectuals. With acquisition of this library, its removal from the country is prevented and an exceptional part of national cultural heritage is saved. Social relevance: Preservation of this library from its removal from the country and its preservation during aggression on B&H has strong symbolic and cultural identity value. Originality/value: For the first time, the paper systematically shows the history of the formation, purchase and preservation of the Hamid Dizdar’s Library, and highlights its inestimable value for BH culture and book history.
