Uncovering Procrastination in Language Teaching: Self-Efficacy, Anxiety, and Situational Influences

Dino Dumančić

The study employed a mixed-methods approach to investigate the relationship between English language teachers’ teaching efficacy, emotional experiences, and situation and task-related procrastination. It aimed to explore both self-reported teaching self-efficacy beliefs and the factors influencing language teachers’ procrastination behaviors and emotions during task delay. A total of 305 Croatian EFL teachers participated in this study. Descriptive, correlation, and directed content analyses were carried out. According to the findings, the Croatian language teachers viewed themselves as highly effective in the classroom and they also reported engaging in procrastination infrequently. When inquired about language proficiency-related anxiety, they admitted having experienced it sporadically. Those confident in utilizing instructional strategies and implementing classroom management strategies procrastinated less and reported lower anxiety levels. Qualitative analysis revealed that demotivating or fatiguing tasks, especially administrative and testing-related ones, instigated procrastination, among others. When procrastinating, the teachers reported primarily unpleasant emotions, such as anxiety, nervousness, frustration, and guilt.

Faculty perceptions of a professional development program for developing CUREs and promoting inclusive and equitable teaching

Laura Gough, Rommel Miranda, Matthew Hemm et al.

ABSTRACT The Diffusion of Innovations (DOI) model can be used to explore how faculty prioritize learning about and adopting new pedagogical approaches. Here, we use the DOI framework to contextualize biology faculty perceptions of a professional development (PD) program designed to help them create a full semester course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) class at a large, public comprehensive university. PD sessions included exploring self-reflexive identity while fostering inclusive classroom spaces through understanding and interrupting implicit bias and microaggressions. This qualitative study sought to determine 11 biology faculty members’ beliefs about the influence of their year-long PD on their CURE development and teaching practices. Findings suggest that faculty were motivated to teach CUREs for a variety of reasons. A common incentive was integrating research into a CURE to bring their passion into their classroom and to engage more students in research. This may be particularly important at institutions where faculty have a heavy teaching load. Faculty also reported modifying their teaching in their CUREs and other courses to be more inclusive and equitable. The importance of peer interactions in the PD was emphasized repeatedly as faculty learned from experts, the literature, and faculty who had already developed a CURE. Our results illustrate that a community of practice structure can enhance the learning aspect of the community, helping faculty consider their implementation of inclusive, equitable, and high-impact practices as an ongoing educational process for themselves and emphasizing the importance of reflection and iteration in a DOI framework.

The Impact of Residents’ Daily Internet Activities on the Spatial Distribution of Online Fraud: An Analysis Based on Mobile Phone Application Usage

Guangwen Song, Jiajun Liang, Linlin Wu et al.

In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of online fraud cases. However, research on crime geography has paid little attention to online crimes, especially to the influencing factors behind their spatial distributions. Online fraud is closely related to people’s daily internet use. The existing literature has explored the impact of internet use on online crimes based on small samples of individual interviews. There is a lack of large-scale studies from a community perspective. This study applies the routine activity theory to online activities to test the relationship between online fraud alert data and the usage durations of different types of mobile phone users’ applications (apps) for communities in ZG City. It builds negative binomial regression models for analyzing the impact of the usage of different types of apps on the spatial distribution of online fraud. The results reveal that the online fraud crime rate and the online time spent on a financial management app share the most similar spatial distribution. While financial management, online education, transportation, and search engine app usages have a significant positive association with online fraud, the use of a financial management app has the greatest impact. Additionally, time spent on social media, online shopping and entertainment, and mobile reading apps have a significant negative association with online fraud. As not all online activities lead to cybercrime, crime prevention efforts should target specific types of apps, such as financial management, online education, transportation, and search engines.

Extraction and Energy Management of Solar Photovoltaic, Fuel Cell, and Battery Systems Using a Novel Multi Port Power Converter for DC Microgrid Applications

Guguloth Nagesh, M. Venkatesh Naik, Dogga Raveendhra et al.

In DC microgrids, efficient power extraction and an effective energy management strategy (EMS) are crucial when integrating multiple power sources. This study presents a novel Four-Port Converter (FPC) configuration designed to extract power from photovoltaic (PV), battery, and fuel cell (FC) sources while employing an advanced EMS to manage energy distribution and meet the demand of DC loads. The proposed FPC features two unidirectional input ports to accommodate renewable energy sources (RESs) and one bidirectional port for integrating an energy storage device (ESD) within a unified configuration. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the converter’s operation, exploring various operating modes for optimal power extraction and energy management from PV, battery, and FC sources. To achieve this, a closed-loop control strategy, along with the EMS, is implemented. Mathematical modeling and simulations demonstrate that this unified configuration ensures efficient, cost-effective, and uninterrupted power transfer among PV, FC, ESD, and the DC link. The design offers advantages such as a simplified structure, a lower component count, higher voltage gain, and reduced voltage stress on power semiconductors while effectively managing power flow among the sources. Both simulation and experimental results validate the feasibility of the proposed converter, highlighting its operational characteristics under different states and energy management modes. A laboratory prototype of the system was developed for a 60 V, 200 W load to assess the power extraction and energy management performance. The results confirm that the converter achieves an average efficiency of 93.86%. Additionally; a comparative analysis with existing four-port topologies and efficiency evaluations across various operating modes is presented. The findings demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed system in terms of higher voltage gain, lower switching losses, and reduced diode stress.

Effect of Doping Concentration on Structural Stability and Formation Energy of the Fluorine Doped Hexagonal Molybdenum Dioxide (MoO2). A First Principle Study.

Yakubu A Tanko, Alhassan Shuaibu, Aminu Abdulrahman et al.

The structural properties of undoped and Fluorine doped Hexagonal Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) with different doping concentrations have been calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) within Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) as implemented in Quantum Espresso (QE). The calculated results were for the formation energy of 4.17%, 8.33%, 12.5%, of F doped MoO2 are 232.5eV, 463.0eV, and 698.5eV respectively, which show the variation of energy based on the increase in the doping concentration that led to having the breakage of bond in the structure of the compound. The undoped and 4.17% of F doped MoO2 have three free atoms, which maintain the stability of the structure, but when the doping concentration was increased, the bond breaks simultaneously which led to having four and five free atoms for 8.33%, and 12.5% of F doped MoO2 respectively. This makes 4.17% of F doped MoO2 with 17.09Ry more stable. Similarly, the bond length of undoped MoO2 was 2.2505pm, but when doped with 4.17% of F it changes to 2.3030pm which indicates a greater stability of the structure concentrations of the dopant above 4.17% reduced the bond length, which made the structure less stable.

Global citizenship cultivation through COIL-PBL model: case study of the Great Debates course

Greg Tuke, Sonia Kapur, Karim Ashour

The current global political, economic, and social challenges urge the need to cultivate global citizenship among students in their learning process. This paper presents the role of Collaboration Online International Learning (COIL) using the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach in cultivating global citizenship among university students. The paper explains the different implementation challenges of a COIL course on the different levels and core design elements of the COIL-PBL model to overcome such challenges. Empirically, this paper presents a primary case study of the Great Debates course that was implemented in different forms by three partner universities, which are the University of Washington Bothell (UWB), the University of North Carolina Asheville (UNCA) in the USA, and the Future University in Egypt (FUE). The implementation showed a positive impact on cultivating global citizenship among participating students, which is clear from developments in students’ skills in the areas of cross-cultural communication and negotiation, cultural sensitivity and tolerance, teamwork and coordination across virtual global teams, analytical skills, and perception toward other cultures and society. Notably, the COIL-PBL model has started to gain further popularity after the COVID-19 pandemic as an alternative for physical mobility, which encourages future research in this area using other implemented courses using the COIL-PBL model.

Wyzwalanie twórczej aktywności dziecka w wieku przedszkolnym i wczesnoszkolnym

Jolanta Berg
