Sex and Ethnic Differences in Career Decision Self-Efficacy: The Comparison between Mentawai, Kutai, Lombok, Palu, and Papua Youths

Dominikus David Biondi Situmorang, Magdalena Palang Lewoleba

Career Decision Self-Efficacy (CDSE), which reflects an individual's confidence in making effective career decisions, is influenced by various factors, particularly sex and ethnicity. This quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional study aims to compare CDSE levels among young men and women from five ethnic groups in Indonesia: Mentawai, Kutai, Lombok, Palu, and Papua. The study involved 75 participants, 38 males and 37 females—who completed the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale–Short Form (CDSES-SF), which demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.901). The results revealed gender-based differences in CDSE dimensions. Male participants scored highest in goal selection (M = 4.79, SD = 0.66) and lowest in planning for the future (M = 4.48, SD = 0.67). In contrast, female participants showed the highest score in occupational information (M = 4.74, SD = 0.61) and the lowest in problem solving (M = 4.43, SD = 0.82). Ethnic differences were also observed. The lowest scoring CDSE dimensions varied: occupational information for Mentawai (M = 4.32, SD = 0.61) and Palu (M = 4.24, SD = 0.43); planning for the future for Kutai (M = 3.70, SD = 0.81) and Papua (M = 3.37, SD = 0.56); and goal selection for Lombok (M = 3.57, SD = 0.88). Based on these findings, it is recommended that counselors provide group or classical guidance and career-focused counseling/psychotherapy to help students strengthen CDSE dimensions where scores remain low, thereby supporting informed and confident career decision-making.

The Influence of Self Leadership on Task Commitment Through Self-Efficacy Mediation in Students

Agustina Agustina, Rahmi Lubis, Siti Aisyah

This study uses quantitative research methods. The population and samples used were students. The research instrument was a questionnaire, namely aspects of task commitment, self-leadership and self-efficacy. The data analysis method used is SEM-PLS. The results showed hypothesis 1 there is an influence of self-leadership (X) on self-efficacy (M). This influence can be seen from the strength of the relationship (R-value) of 0.542 which is classified as sufficient with an R Square value of 0.293 or 29.3%. This means that the self-leadership variable has a direct effect of 29.3% on self-efficacy. Hypothesis 2 of this study is the effect of self-efficacy on task commitment. This hypothesis is proven correct because the significance value is 0.000 <0.05. The effect can also be seen in the Summary table with an influence strength value (R-value) of 0.549 and a coefficient of determination of 0.302 or 30.2%. This means that the self-efficacy variable (M) has a direct effect of 30.2% on task commitment. Hypothesis 3, namely that there is an effect of self-leadership on task commitment through self-efficacy, this hypothesis is proven by the significance value in the regression coefficient table of 0.000 <0.05. while the calculated R value is 0.580. the coefficient of determination obtained a value of 0.336 or 33.6%. This means that the variables of self-leadership and self-efficacy have an indirect effect of 33.6% on task commitment.

Evaluating the accuracy of the Veterans Health Administration’s REACH VET suicide prediction model for legal involved veterans

Alex H. S. Harris, Andrea K. Finlay, Esther L. Meerwijk

Abstract The Veterans Health Administration’s (VA) Recovery Engagement and Coordination for Health–Veterans Enhanced Treatment (REACH VET) suicide prevention program uses a model that estimates every patient’s suicide risk. We evaluated predictive accuracy of that model for death by suicide, and separately for the combined outcome of suicide attempt or death, for all VA patients and for patients with criminal legal system involvement who have one of the highest suicide rates among VA users. We found that the model has low accuracy for the prediction of death by suicide (positive predictive value = 0.05% overall, 0.10% for legal-involved; false negative rate = 98.1% overall, 82.4% for legal-involved). For the combined outcome, model accuracy was better and more so for legal-involved veterans, but overall still low. While the REACH VET program has been shown to have benefits, the underlying model that identifies patients at high risk of suicide needs improvement.

Mistake Rumination Scale: Psychometric properties for the Turkish version

Burcu Kaya Kızılöz, Ayşe Altan Atalay, Ahmet Berk Özdemir

The Mistake Rumination Scale (MRS) was developed to evaluate the inclination to engage in mistake rumination (MR), a reaction to perceived mistakes in the form of intense, repetitive negative thoughts. The present study aimed to investigate the psychometric qualities of the Turkish version of the MRS in 2 studies. Data were collected from 214 participants (118 females) between the ages of 18 and 56 (M = 33.45, SD = 11.82) through measures of MR, repetitive negative thinking, perfectionism, procrastination, depression, and anxiety. The findings confirmed the original factor structure and indicated adequate reliability, convergent, and incremental validity. In the second study, the criterion-related validity of the MRS was tested using an experimental design. Participants (127 individuals aged between 18 and 28) were asked to imagine committing a series of mistakes or a regular event. Results provided support for the criterion-related validity of the MRS. In conclusion, MRS can be utilized to assess MR in Turkish individuals.

Effect of the turkish strategy game Mangala on cognitive functions in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease: A pilot study

Aziz DENGIZ, Nilufer CETISLI-KORKMAZ, Aysegul KITIS

Introduction: Cognitive impairment is a common symptom of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Memory loss, difficulty completing familiar tasks, problems with language, disorientation to time and place, poor judgment, problems with abstract thinking, misplacing things, changes in mood and personality, and loss of initiative are some of the common symptoms of cognitive impairment in individuals with AD. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Turkish intelligence and strategy game Mangala on cognitive functions in individuals with AD. Material and Methods: Individuals with AD residing in the Denizli Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Center were included in this study. In addition to the demographic characteristics, the level of anxiety and general cognitive functions were assessed with Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HAD) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA), respectively. Both the treatment and control groups had daily physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions. Results: The mean age of the treatment (n=6) and control (n=6) group were 81.16±9.49 and 80±3.85 years. There was no significant difference between the groups before treatment (p>0.05). MoCA values improved significantly in the treatment group (p<0.05), and there was no significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). Discussions: According to the findings of our research, which examined the impact of Mangala on cognitive functions in individuals diagnosed with AD, it was observed that playing Mangala resulted in significant improvements in their cognitive abilities. In preventing cognitive decline in patients with AD, keeping the neural connections in the brain strong is needed. Games such as Mangala may play an important role in maintaining strong connections among these cognitive functions. Conclusions: Games, such as the Turkish intelligence and strategy game Mangala, that are easy-to-play, entertaining, and adaptable for patients with AD challenge working memory and mental agility, could be part of the rehabilitation plan for clinical practitioners working in this field.

Investigation of the validity and reliability of the Turkish form of the Adult Executive Functions Inventory (ADEXI)

Emre Han Alpay, Burcu Kaya Kızılöz

This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Turkish Version of the Adult Executive Functions Inventory (ADEXI), which was developed to evaluate executive functions from adults. The sample of the study consisted of 376 participants aged between 18 and 65 (Mean = 20.59, SD = 1.84) and selected from the community sample. The participants filled out the Demographics Form, Cognitive Flexibility Inventory, Barratt Impulsivity Scale, Adult Atten-tion Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Report Scale, and the Turkish version of ADEXI. The two-factor structure (working memory and inhibition) in the original version of the scale was confirmed by second-level confirmatory factor analysis. ADEXI’s association with other meas-urement tools were also observed. Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficients for the total score of the scale and for the working memory and inhibition dimensions were calculated as .80, .83, and 73, respectively. Moreover, Gutman's two-half reliability coefficients for the total score of the scale and working memory and inhibition dimensions were calculated as .75, .81, and .69 respectively. Results showed that the Turkish version of ADEXI is a valid and reliable measure-ment tool that can be used to evaluate two dimensions of executive functions, working memory and inhibition.

Penerapan Teknik Scavenger Hunt dalam Bimbingan Klasikal untuk Mengatasi Academic Burnout pada Siswa

Henny Mamahit, Hillary Reandsi

Academic burnout is when students experience emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced academic efficacy due to burnout and stress experienced for a long period. One of the factors that cause academic burnout is the monotonous learning method, so students are getting bored and not eager to take part in learning. Thus, an effort that can be made to overcome academic burnout is to provide classical guidance with interactive and fun methods such as involving the scavenger hunt game. This study aimed to apply the scavenger hunt game technique in classical guidance to overcome academic burnout. The subjects of this study were students of class 8th at SMP Kolese Kanisius, totaling 162 students. This study is a pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design. This study's data collection techniques were MBI-SS, observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Based on the Wilcoxon test analysis results using SPSS, the Asymp. (2-tailed) value is 0.000. The Asymp value. (0.000) is smaller than the α value (0.05). These results indicate a significant difference between before and after being given classical guidance with the scavenger hunt game technique. So, it can be concluded that the scavenger hunt game technique through classical guidance can overcome academic burnout.

Who are we protecting? Exploring counsellors’ understanding and experience of boundaries.

Peter Blundell, Lisa Oakley, Kathryn Kinmond

The concept of boundaries is a term often used within counselling and psychotherapy literature. However, there is a paucity of research into how useful and meaningful it is as a concept, for counselling and psychotherapy practice. This study researched how counsellors understand and experience boundaries within their counselling practice.  Seven participants, who were all qualified and practicing counsellors, were interviewed about their understanding and experience of boundaries. These interviews were transcribed and then analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Analysis identified two superordinate themes: Protection and Safety; and The Structure of Therapy. This paper explores the first superordinate theme, which is further divided into two subordinate themes, which are: Protection of Self and Protection of Other. Findings indicate that there was a lack of awareness around boundaries, with some participants describing defensive responses to some boundary issues. However, participants also described using boundaries to restrict, limit and defend themselves when working with clients, and they identified this as necessary for their own safety and security.  This study recommends that therapists should engage reflexively with boundaries within their practice, to ensure practice is client focused.

Sex differences in the genetic regulation of the blood transcriptome response to glucocorticoid receptor activation

Sarah R. Moore, Thorhildur Halldorsdottir, Jade Martins et al.

Abstract Substantial sex differences have been reported in the physiological response to stress at multiple levels, including the release of the stress hormone, cortisol. Here, we explore the genomic variants in 93 females and 196 males regulating the initial transcriptional response to cortisol via glucocorticoid receptor (GR) activation. Gene expression levels in peripheral blood were obtained before and after GR-stimulation with the selective GR agonist dexamethasone to identify differential expression following GR-activation. Sex stratified analyses revealed that while the transcripts responsive to GR-stimulation were mostly overlapping between males and females, the quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) regulation differential transcription to GR-stimulation was distinct. Sex-stratified eQTL SNPs (eSNPs) were located in different functional genomic elements and sex-stratified transcripts were enriched within postmortem brain transcriptional profiles associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) specifically in males and females in the cingulate cortex. Female eSNPs were enriched among SNPs linked to MDD in genome-wide association studies. Finally, transcriptional sensitive genetic profile scores derived from sex-stratified eSNPS regulating differential transcription to GR-stimulation were predictive of depression status and depressive symptoms in a sex-concordant manner in a child and adolescent cohort (n = 584). These results suggest the potential of eQTLs regulating differential transcription to GR-stimulation as biomarkers of sex-specific biological risk for stress-related psychiatric disorders.

Ethical issues specific to psychological practices with elderly people

Hasan Gündüz

In recent years, along with the increasing proportion of the elderly population, psychologists in different roles, such as researchers, therapists, educators, as well as many different professions, will work more with elderly people. For this reason, psychologists who have to comply with the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct published by the American Psychologi-cal Association (APA) in any psychological practice they conduct (research, therapy, etc.) will need to increase their awareness of ethical issues specific to elderly individuals. Considering serious changes and losses in the cognitive, psychological, and physical characteristics, different ethical issues may need to be paid particular attention to elderly people. In this review, based on the characteristics of elderly individuals, the ethical issues that need to be considered in psycho-logical practice were addressed under the headings of informed consent, volunteerism, privacy, confidentiality, autonomy, abuse and neglect and appropriate solutions for each issue were dis-cussed on the basis of ethical principles. Psychologists and other mental health professionals need to develop their competence to work with elderly individuals by obtaining detailed knowledge of the characteristics of them and professional ethical principles for this group in order to solve the related ethical problems properly.
