Giulia Sala

This article is a report on preliminary ethnographic research conducted in Bali in 2024 on Barong performances. The Barong mask nowadays is used in various performance contexts, ranging from ritual spaces in temples to shows designed for tourist audiences. Balinese dances, which originated in temples and courts, underwent a transformation and adaptation as a result of a strong incentive for cultural tourism during the 20th century. Starting from the mythological origins of the figure of Barong, through the visions of various performers, artisans, and scholars, this article investigates the separation and differentiation of sacred and profane Balinese dances and the influence of tourism on the performing arts.

Commoning and site-specific environmental performance in Marseille

Rebecca Free, Mark Ingram

Given that our current environmental crisis is, as Amitav Ghosh argues, “in every way a collective predicament”, a critical question for discussions of the ecological impact of the arts is their role in fostering the kinds of collaborative forms of action called for to address environmental challenges. Such discussions include Baz Kershaw’s criticism of the anti-ecological “production of spectators” by theatres, and Brian Kulick’s more recent argument that theatre generates moments of collective attentiveness that might contribute to collaboration beyond the performance event.                Here, drawing on recent scholarship on the commons and commoning, we examine site-specific environmentally-focused performances in which the collaborative engagement of non-artist participants was a central part of the creative work. All set in social and environmental interstitial sites, these works constitute a mode of performance that integrates social collaboration and environmental aims and grounds these within an urban social framework extending beyond the time of the performance event. We examine the key aesthetic strategies employed in addressing the specific social and historical context of Marseille, and we look to identify the most important factors shaping their contributions to the city as a site of collaborative approaches to environmental issues.

Sound Dramaturgies:

Angeliki Poulou, Manolis Manousakis

The paper explores the potential of sound to repoliticize theatre and performance. By examining the activity and dramaturgical practices of the multimedia art collective Medea Electronique (Greece), it highlights contradictions of contemporary art, particularly the continuous transition from ‘everything is political’ to ‘no, not everything is political’ and vice versa. From a post-Brechtian perspective, the political function of art lies in preserving the diverse sensibilities at the core of art’s autonomy. This entails avoiding that art be reduced to a post-political gesture or aligning it too closely with everyday aestheticized experiences.

The Metaplectic Representation is Faithful

Christopher Chang, Simeon Hellsten, Mario Marcos Losada et al.

We develop methods to show that infinite-dimensional modules over the Iwasawa algebra $KG$ of a uniform pro-p group are faithful and apply them to show that the metaplectic representation for the symplectic group is faithful.

«Portretować znaczy spotykać»: Performatywność fotograficznych autoportretów Lene Marie Fossen

Jakub Pawlak

This article discusses the work of the Norwegian photographer Lene Marie Fossen (1986–2019) and a documentary film about her: Self-Portrait (2020, dir. Margareth Olin, Katja Høgset, and Espen Wallin). In an attempt to co-think with photographic self-portraits of the artist, who suffered from severe anorexia, the author draws on methodologies of performance studies, especially the theories of performative index (Margaret Olin) and representation (Peggy Phelan). The proposed description of Fossen’s artistic practice has been inspired by categories of autological imaginaries, encompassing discourses of individual freedom, and genealogical imaginaries, encompassing discourses of social constraints (Elizabeth A. Povinelli). The author interprets Fossen’s photographs as results of her experiments with her own corporeality at a point where these imaginaries intersect and undermine each other. The photographic (re)presentations do not answer the question of who the real Fossen is or is not, but rather test the power of the artist’s and her audiences’ imagination. Arguing that the medium of photography gave Fossen the ability to balance the border between the marked and the umarked, the author sees this as the source of the emancipatory potential of her photographic self-portraits.

Extensions of representation stable categories

Joe Moeller

A category of FI type is one which is sufficiently similar to finite sets and injections so as to admit nice representation stability results. Several common examples admit a Grothendieck fibration to finite sets and injections. We begin by carefully reviewing the theory of fibrations of categories with motivating examples relevant to algebra and representation theory. We classify which functors between FI type categories are fibrations, and thus obtain sufficient conditions for an FI type category to be the result of a Grothendieck construction.

Recent advances in branching problems of representations

Toshiyuki Kobayashi

How does an irreducible representation of a group behave when restricted to a subgroup? This is part of branching problems, which are one of the fundamental problems in representation theory, and also interact naturally with other fields of mathematics. This expository paper is an up-to-date account on some new directions in representation theory highlighting the branching problems for real reductive groups and their related topics ranging from global analysis of manifolds via group actions to the theory of discontinuous groups beyond the classical Riemannian setting. This article is an outgrowth of the invited lecture that the author delivered at the commemorative event for the 70th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Mathematical Society of Japan, and originally appeared in Japanese in Sugaku 71 (2019).

Dance and Puppet Theatre

Margareta Sörenson

The article, which is also the introduction of a forthcoming book to be published in English and Swedish, focuses on the close relation between puppetry and dance. It shows how these two artistic genres have developed from antiquity to the present and calls attention to their engaging intersections throughout their long history, referring also to the Commedia dell’ Arte tradition as one such point of intersection. A large part of the article is devoted to the study of the Marionette Theatre in Stockholm, its history, development and unique aesthetic.

Representation theory of disconnected reductive groups

P. Achar, W. Hardesty, S. Riche

We study three fundamental topics in the representation theory of disconnected algebraic groups whose identity component is reductive: (i) the classification of irreducible representations; (ii) the existence and properties of Weyl and dual Weyl modules; and (iii) the decomposition map relating representations in characteristic $0$ and those in characteristic $p$ (for groups defined over discrete valuation rings). For each of these topics, we obtain natural generalizations of the well-known results for connected reductive groups.

Listy Anieli Aszpergerowej do rodziny Młodnickich

Agata Kubik, oprac.

This is an edition of previously unpublished letters written by actress Aniela Aszperger (1816–1904) to Wanda and Karol Młodnicki and to their daughter, Maryla Wolska. The letters, covering the years 1874–1901, come from the Home Archive of the Pawlikowskis, now in the collection of the Jagiellonian Library. The correspondence contains much information relating to the realities of Aniela Aszperger’s life, reveals her character traits and personality, which may come in handy in interpreting her acting. The letters are also a valuable document of an artistic friendship. The correspondence is prefaced with a biographical note on Aszperger, who debuted in 1835 in Warsaw, but for most of her professional life was associated with Lemberg (Lwów), for a number of years being the toast of the stage at the Skarbkowski Theatre. Being active in the social and political life of the city, she became a living legend. The biographical note brings a number of new findings and clarifies some details of fact.
