Emerging technologies and research challenges for 5G wireless networks

W. Chin, Z. Fan, R. Haines

As the take-up of Long Term Evolution (LTE)/4G cellular accelerates, there is increasing interest in technologies that will define the next generation (5G) telecommunication standard. This article identifies several emerging technologies which will change and define the future generations of telecommunication standards. Some of these technologies are already making their way into standards such as 3GPP LTE, while others are still in development. Additionally, we will look at some of the research problems that these new technologies pose.

The long-term effect of digital innovation on bank performance: An empirical study of SWIFT adoption in financial services

S. Scott, J. V. Reenen, Markos Zachariadis

We examine the impact on bank performance of the adoption of SWIFT, a network-based technological infrastructure and set of standards for worldwide interbank telecommunication. We construct a new longitudinal dataset of 6848 banks in 29 countries in Europe and the Americas with the full history of adoption since SWIFT’s initial operations in 1977. Our results suggest that the adoption of SWIFT (i) has large effects on profitability in the long-term; (ii) these profitability effects are greater for small than for large banks; and (iii) exhibits significant network effects on performance. We use an in-depth field study to better understand the mechanisms underlying the effects on profitability.

Flocking Behavior of Boids Driven by Hyperchaotic MACM System

Rosa Martha López-gutiérrez, Lılıana Cardoza Avendaño, Ana Medina et al.

In the present work a detailed study is presented, on the design, programming, and investigation of the behavior of flocking (Movement type flock), through the model of BOIDS, for its acronym in English "Bird Oid Object" (Object type bird), which was devised by Craig Reynolds in 1986. This complex flocking behavior that occurs arises from the interaction of simple local rules, in which complexity and sensitivity to initial conditions are present. A measure of chaotic compound will be introduced to the algorithm by means of a new four-dimensional autonomous hyperchaotic system based on the 3D Méndez-Arellano-Cruz-Martínez (MACM) system. The measures proposed herein, therefore, may have the potential to predict, control, and exemplify the behavior of group intelligence study systems that occur in nature, allowing the implementation of these systems in groups of robots through the implementation of hyperchaotic trajectories in the future, to obtain greater speed and efficiency, obstacle and collisions avoidance in their flights.

Association of Polish Electrical Engineers and the Chamber of Licensed Experts

Maria Zastawny, Andrzej Skorupski, Ryszard S. Romaniuk

At the beginning of the year 2024, 65 years will have passed since the establishment of the Chamber of Experts of the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers (SEP). During this period, SEP underwent significant changes. Particularly serious changes in the conditions for practicing association expertises have occurred in recent years, along with dynamic economic and political changes in Poland. Expertise is strongly based on economic conditions and the ways in which scientific, technical and industrial competences are expanded and available in the society. In the past, these highest competencies were quite strictly limited to well-organized professional communities related to scientific and technical associations such as SEP, and federal bodies such as NOT. Competencies were also generated in the best industrial centres associated with academic polytechnic centres. Today the role of expertises in electrical, electronics and ICT engineering is undergoing significant changes.

A New Method for Electrocardiogram Features Extraction Using Slope Change Coefficients

Skander Bensegueni

A new method of Electrocardiogram (ECG) features extraction is proposed in this paper. The purpose of this study is to detect the main characteristics of the signal: P, Q, R, S, and T, then localize and extract its intervals and segments. To do so we first detect peaks, onsets and offsets of the signal's waveform by calculating the slope change (SC) coefficients and consequently, the peaks of the signal are determined. The SC coefficients are based on the calculation of the integral of two-scale signals with opposite signs. The simulation results of our algorithm applied on recordings of MIT-BIH arrhythmia electrocardiogram database show that the proposed method delineates the electrocardiogram waveforms and segments with high precision.
