Collective Choice and Social Welfare

A. Sen

This book is concerned with the study of collective preference, in particular with the relationship between the objectives of social action and the preferences and aspirations of society's members. Professor Sen's approach is based on the assumption that the problem of collective choice cannot be satisfactorily discussed within the confines of economics. While collective choice forms a crucial aspect of economics, the subject pertains also to political science, the theory of the state, and to the theory of decision procedures. The author has therefore used material from these disciplines, plus philosophical aspects from ethics and the theory of justice.

The Political Economy of International Relations

R. Gilpin

After the end of World War II, the United States, by far the dominant economic and military power at that time, joined with the surviving capitalist democracies to create an unprecedented institutional framework. By the 1980s many contended that these institutions--the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (now the World Trade Organization), the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund--were threatened by growing economic nationalism in the United States, as demonstrated by increased trade protection and growing budget deficits. In this book, Robert Gilpin argues that American power had been essential for establishing these institutions, and waning American support threatened the basis of postwar cooperation and the great prosperity of the period. For Gilpin, a great power such as the United States is essential to fostering international cooperation. Exploring the relationship between politics and economics first highlighted by Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and other thinkers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Gilpin demonstrated the close ties between politics and economics in international relations, outlining the key role played by the creative use of power in the support of an institutional framework that created a world economy. Gilpin's exposition of the in.uence of politics on the international economy was a model of clarity, making the book the centerpiece of many courses in international political economy. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, when American support for international cooperation is once again in question, Gilpin's warnings about the risks of American unilateralism sound ever clearer.

Policy, Technology, and Economic Efficiency of Infrastructure Energy Investment: A Strategic Analysis for a Low-Carbon Future

Yao Liang, Xin Weng, Tingting Sun

This study provides a comprehensive strategic analysis of infrastructure energy investment in the context of the global low-carbon transition. Integrating quantitative panel data analysis across 15 countries (2010-2023), detailed case studies of Germany, the United States, China, and the European Union, and scenario simulations through 2050, we examine how policy, technology, and economic factors interact to determine investment effectiveness. Using panel data from 15 countries over the period 2010-2023, we find that renewable energy investment is systematically associated with higher economic growth and lower carbon emissions after controlling for country and year fixed effects.

Plant tissue-based scaffolds filled with oil function as adipose tissue mimetics

Elyse S. Czapalay, Yasamin Soleimanian, Jarvis A. Stobbs et al.

Cellulosic scaffolds filled with oil were designed to replicate animal adipose tissues. Many plants are structured as polysaccharide-based cellular solids. They maintain their integrity after drying, can serve as a scaffold for incorporating fat, and do not lose integrity upon heating, thus resembling native adipose tissue. Carrots, broccoli, and asparagus were freeze-dried and subsequently filled with peanut oil, its glycerolysis product (GP), and the oleogel of this GP. Oleogel-filled scaffolds displayed high oil binding capacity (≥95%), and an oil loss resembling that of adipose tissue. In addition, the texture of oleogel-filled asparagus and broccoli tissue closely resembled that of beef and pork adipose tissues, respectively. Plant scaffolds closely emulated the temperature-dependent rheological behavior of adipose tissue. These new materials could significantly improve the quality of plant-based meat analogues, such as burgers and sausages, by preventing the thermal softening of the material upon cooking and excessive oil loss.

Variability indexes for wind power

Guglielmo D’Amico, Giovanni Masala, Filippo Petroni

Abstract In this paper, we propose some new measures of wind power variability based on reliability indexes. The measures are computed for continuous-time Markov models of wind power generation and for different wind parks. This allows us to compare the differences in the measurement of the variability of wind power due to the different geographical positions of the wind plants. The results have direct practical relevance and utility in the real-world wind energy sector, as they contribute to a more in-depth understanding of the variability risk of wind power generation plants.

Economic Complexity Alignment and Sustainable Development

Quinten De Wettinck, Karolien De Bruyne, Wouter Bam et al.

Economic complexity has been linked to sustainability outcomes, such as income inequality and greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, it is unclear whether the pursuit of complex and/or related activities naturally aligns with these outcomes, or whether meeting sustainability goals requires policy interventions that pursue unrelated diversification. Here, we exploit multidimensional social and environmental sustainability indicators to quantify the alignment between a country's closest diversification opportunities and sustainability goals. We find that high- and upper-middle-income countries face significantly better environmentally aligned diversification opportunities than poorer economies. This means that, while richer countries enjoy diversification opportunities that align complexity, relatedness and environmental performance, this alignment is weaker for developing economies. These findings underscore the value of evaluating future diversification trajectories through a multidimensional sustainability framework, and emphasise the strategic relevance of unrelated diversification for less developed economies to foster sustainable development.

The Effectiveness of Low-Carb Diet vs Low-Fat Diet on Body Composition in People with Obesity: A Literature Review

Tutut Rizki Indriyani, Atika Rahmawati, Luthfiani Khoirunnisa et al.

Background: Obesity is still become a serious problem today. Obesity is caused by excessive adipose tissue. One of many factors that contribute to a person's obesity is food intake. Excess carbohydrate and fat intake will be stored in the form of triglycerides in adipose tissue. In the meantime, Low-Carb Diet (LCD) and Low-Fat Diet (LFD) are one of the most popular treatments on obesity. However there are many pros and cons related to each diet based on several studies. Objectives: The indicated study aims to determine the effectiveness of LCD and LFD on body composition in people with obesity. Methods: The study was conducted through journal and literature review, based on five journal publications, filtered by related keywords. In accordance to inclusion and exclusion criteria within the last ten years in Pubmed/Medline database, Science Direct, and Wiley Online Library with the keywords "Low-Carb Diet", "Low-Fat Diet", "Body Mass Index", "Lipid Levels", "Adipose Tissue", "Obese", and "Body Water". Discussion: Total body mass and fat mass decreased significantly after being given LCD intervention compared to LFD. The group that was given two dietary interventions also losing weight, but there was no changes in body water. In addition, negative effects were found from the LCD and LFD interventions such as constipation, fatigue, polyuria, nausea, vomiting, changes in appetite, and headaches. Kidney failure, ketosis, and premature coronary artery also occurred in the group that was given with LCD intervention. Conclusions: LCD and LFD interventions can affect body composition of people with obesity.

Exploring the intersection between sustainable finance and achieving carbon neutrality in the transportation sector

Jingfu Lu, Fatime Gulzar, Yifan Lai

In the context of China's transportation sector, which has faced escalating challenges in carbon emissions, this study delves into the intricate nexus between sustainable finance strategies and the imperative of achieving carbon neutrality. Spanning the years 2010–2022 across 30 provinces of China and employing a rigorous Panel Model methodology, our research sets out to achieve several pivotal objectives. These include assessing the tangible impact of sustainable finance initiatives on curtailing carbon emissions within the transportation domain, discerning the pivotal drivers that influence the trajectory of carbon neutrality endeavors, and critically evaluating the efficacy of policy interventions aimed at fostering sustainability. Our findings unearth a compelling narrative. Firstly, we observe a discernible positive correlation between the implementation of sustainable finance mechanisms—such as green bonds, sustainable investment portfolios, and innovative financial instruments—and the tangible reduction of carbon emissions within the transportation sector. Secondly, our analysis underscores the indispensable role of key drivers, ranging from technological advancements and regulatory frameworks to evolving consumer behavior and public consciousness, in steering the course towards carbon neutrality. Thirdly, our research underscores the pivotal impact of targeted policy interventions, emphasizing the efficacy of measures aimed at incentivizing sustainable practices, fostering stakeholder collaborations, and bolstering industry-wide accountability frameworks. In light of these insights, our study advocates for a nuanced policy landscape characterized by a multifaceted approach. By aligning financial incentives with sustainability goals, fostering technological innovation, and fostering robust regulatory frameworks, policymakers can catalyze a paradigm shift towards carbon neutrality in the transportation sector.

Assessment and phenotypic identification of millet germplasm (Setaria italica L.) in Liaoning, China

Xintong Li, Weifeng He, Honghao Wang et al.

Aims This study evaluated millet germplasms in Liaoning Province to support the collection, preservation and innovation of millet germplasm resources. Methods The study was conducted from 2018 to 2020, involved the selection of 105 millet germplasm resources from the Germplasm Bank of the Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences (LAAS), the observation and recording of 31 traits, and the application of multivariate analysis methods to assess phenotypic diversity. Results From the diversity analysis and correlation analysis, it was found that the tested traits had abundant diversity and complex correlations among them. Principal component analysis (PCA) comprehensively analyzed all quantitative traits and extracted seven principal components. Grey relational analysis (GRA) highlighted the varied contributions of different traits to yield. Through systematic cluster analysis (SCA), the resources were categorized into six groups at Euclidean distance of 17.09. K-mean cluster analysis determined the distribution interval and central value of each trait, then identified resources with desirable traits. Conclusion The results revealed resources that possess characteristics such as upthrow seedling leaves, more tillers and branches, larger and well-formed ears, and lodging resistance prefer to higher grain yield. It was also discovered that the subear internode length (SIL) could be an indicator for maturity selection. Four specific resources, namely, Dungu No. 1, Xiao-li-xiang, Basen Shengu, and Yuhuanggu No. 1, were identified for further breeding and practical applications.
