Corpos dissidentes, plataformização e vigilância algorítmica

Larissa Pelúcio, Bruna Andrade Irineu, Mariah Rafaela Silva

Structural Equation Modeling of Women's Role in Good Urban Governance in Iran

مصطفی محمدی ده چشمه, hengameh Dalvand

Introduction: In an era characterized by a growing emphasis on sustainable development and social justice, understanding and recognizing women's role in urban decision-making and management processes is of paramount importance. This study aims to develop a structural equation model to assess the position of women in good urban governance in Iran.

Methods: Employing a descriptive-analytical approach, this applied research identifies and analyzes the key drivers influencing women's roles in urban governance. A researcher-designed questionnaire was utilized to collect data from 150 experts, resulting in the identification of 36 factors categorized under four main drivers: laws and regulations, organizational charts and hierarchies, the decentralized urban management system, and urban plans and programs. Structural equation modeling was employed to infer the causal relationships among these factors.

Findings: The findings reveal that the "decentralized urban management system" and "laws" exert the most significant influence on women's positions in good urban governance in Iran, with factor loadings of 0.87. Organizational charts and hierarchies, with a factor loading of 0.69, and urban plans and programs, with a factor loading of 0.59, also have a substantial impact on women's roles. Furthermore, laws and regulations independently influence women's participation in urban governance. The study's findings are credible given that women, constituting more than half of Iran's urban population, have consistently strived for gender equality. This research not only provides a critical analysis of the current situation but also offers recommendations to enhance women's participation in urban management structures to achieve the vision of good governance.

The intersection of aging and estrogen in osteoarthritis

Aysegul Atasoy-Zeybek, Kelly K. Showel, Christopher V. Nagelli et al.

Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease characterized by cartilage degradation, inflammation, and pain. While multiple factors contribute to OA development, age and sex are primary risk factors, particularly affecting postmenopausal women. The dramatic increase in OA risk after menopause suggests estrogen deficiency accelerates disease progression. This review explores the molecular mechanisms connecting aging and estrogen deficiency in OA development, focusing on key genes and pathways identified through RNA sequencing.

A Social Psychological Critique on Islamic Feminism

Marziyeh Bakhshizadeh

Islamic feminism, as a discourse within feminism, aims to re-read the Qur’an from a modern egalitarian perspective, which is outside the traditional and patriarchal interpretation of Islam. Islamic feminists reclaim an ethical vision of the Qur’an by presenting a reinterpretation, especially regarding verses that deprive women from having equal rights in the family, as well as in society. However, while Islamic feminism presents a gender equal interpretation of the Qur’an and raises new discourses and debates on gender relations in an Islamic context, a critical insight of Islamic feminism can provide a new gender and religious consciousness that, in turn, develops further perspectives on gender equality in a religious context. This paper aims to provide a critique of Islamic feminism from a social psychological perspective of gender using the theory of Abdulkarim Soroush. His theory considers revelation as the prophet’s word resulting from his religious experience. Soroush defines revelation as an inspiration; in this way, revelation or Qur’an is not directly God’s word, but Muhammad’s word resulting from a divine experience. Accordingly, this paper deals with a social psychological perspective of the lived experience of the prophet as a man in a certain epoch of history, in which the lived experiences of women were not represented, and the revelation or the Qur’an is based on a male lived experience. It begins with an overview of Islamic feminists as well as the more general current of Islamic reformists and their efforts to view the revelation as the word of the prophet in order to avoid attributing the non-scientific content of the Qur’an to the direct word of God. This is followed by a critique of Islamic feminism based on Abdulkarim Soroush’s theory of the recognition of the revelation as the word of the prophet, as well as gender theories from the field of social psychology.

Rural Women Redefining Care and Agency in the Argentine Pampas

Johana Kunin

This article provides an ethnographic analysis of the agency of women who reside in the rural areas of the Argentine Pampas, based on their promotion and production of agroecological family horticulture. The recognition of these women’s agency through care – care of their children, global care, and green care – offers a significant challenge to some metrocentric and Eurocentric feminist perspectives that claim care work can only be oppressive for women. The first of these types of care empowers women to improve the nutrition of their children. It also relates to another underlying type of care, which is to provide a sufficiently robust education as to ensure their children have a better and alternative future. The second type of care has the power to socially transform the territorial space of the district’s countryside and its marginalized populations which, through care, acquire greater public and political attention. The third type of care empowers women to transform and care for the environment, and is exercised by not using pesticides in horticultural production and by disseminating knowledge on the matter. In line with discussions of postcolonial feminism (Abu-Lughod, 1986; Mahmood, 2001; Suárez Navaz, 2008), I argue that certain properties that are attributed to women relative to caregiving – by way of a dichotomous view of gender relations – fuel their agency: for these women the cultivation of vegetables is a form of agency that actively combats food, training and labor inequality.

Marlyse Debergh, Sophie Torrent

Drawing upon two ethnographic studies conducted in Western Switzerland – in a sexual education service for disabled people, and in a sexual health centre for the general public – this article demonstrates how gender is constructed through sexual health education. Deploying the theoretical paradigms of the Doing Gender Theory (West, Zimmerman, 2009), and the epistemology of ignorance (Tuana, 2006; 2004), this article presents one main finding: sexual health education programs (re)produce gender dynamics along a continuum, in different sexual health education programs designed for different audiences (youth, teenagers, adults). The analysis follows three lines: discourses, as well as medical and anatomical models, about fecundation and the clitoris; discourses about the social construction of puberty; definition and perception of sexual intercourse.

Humor, Gender, and Sex(uality) in Text and Film: Incredible Shrinking Men from Mark Twain to Lorrie Moore

Carolina Núñez Puente

This article compares The Diaries of Adam and Eve (Twain, 1904-1906), The Incredible Shrinking Man (Arnold, 1957), and "You're Ugly, Too" (Moore, 2008) from the perspectives of humor, feminism, and queer theory. It examines how humor interacts with the changing representations of gender and sex(uality) at the beginning, the middle, and the end of the twentieth century; furthermore, it argues that humor is a valuable means of questioning binary patterns, which in this way may contribute to a life of equality-in-difference (my term). I also discuss certain types of comicality, e.g. sarcasm, the results of which can be detrimental or simply conformist. The article concludes that humor can help us to pull down hierarchies, find affinities, and build ethical relations among genders, sex(ualiti)es, and beyond.

Neoliberal Universities, Patriarchies, Masculinities, and Myself: Transnational-personal Reflections on and from the Global North

Jeff Hearn

This article reflects on working in eight universities in Finland, Sweden, and the UK, along with many transnational research projects. These are analysed within the framework of what might be called neoliberal universities, neoliberal trans(national)patriarchies, and neoliberal masculinities. Importantly, these are reflections from the global North, being transnationally located there, rather than glossed as ‘global’ or simply assumed as nationally contextualised. This discussion is located within the burgeoning literature on neoliberalism, and then proceeds to examine, first, experiences in the UK, before those in Finland and Sweden. The final section focuses on the transnationalisation of these neoliberal processes in academia – for example, through transnational research development, projectisation of research, and language use, performance and performativity. In such ways multiple connections are drawn between the greater organisational ‘autonomy’ of universities, contradictions of transnationalisations of academia, and the construction of ‘autonomous’ individual(ist) academics.

The professional office of Sociology and other professions in women's key

Mª Amparo Almarcha Barbado

From the dual professional and teaching perspective, it is a question of analyzing the differences and inequalities that happen to women, taking into account that there is a certain superiority related to merit and effort in the field of education. The effort of women is not rewarded in job market. There are more graduate women in quite a few spaces and disciplines, but the fact that they hold good positions in politics and as company directives it is still seen as something spectacular. The feminine gender is a "small" obstacle for that; also, inequalities and exclusions occur from the academic sphere to the professional one. The barriers continue to exist from teaching, where women scale in much smaller measures the chairs or the addresses of faculties, centers or departments. Domestic chores continue to exist and the family as a barrier. This is also constant and possible when one observes what happens in the professional development of Sociology and Political Science: downward figures increase concerning women’s participation as professors, department directors or deans, among other positions of relevance. It is clear that equality is not only a matter of laws, there is much more to bring into play.

Diskurs rizika v prevenci AIDS/ HIV

Katerina Kolárová

This text presents an analysis of the recent emphasis in HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns: the discursive constructions of HIV/AIDS as an issue of risk and its management. Specifically, the text discusses the prevention materials produced by state-funded institutions in the Czech Republic. The aim of the text is twofold: First, it analyses the specific discourse (and rationality) of risk that permeates HIV/AIDS prevention in relation to and as a part of modern biopolitics and (self-)governance. Second, the text examines the discourse of risk for its gendered implications and its re-inscription of gendered power inequalities.
