Asking to Listen: Engaging Social Scientific Methods as a Listening Practice in Global Catholicism

Tricia C. Bruce

Asking enables listening. This paper explores how the practice of asking, when enacted as an intentional social scientific process, can facilitate the synodal value of listening across the global Catholic Church. Drawing upon social science methodologies and evidence, it demonstrates that effective listening is not merely passive reception but proactive invitation to engage diverse or silenced perspectives. Systematic asking incorporates everyday people and experiences otherwise overlooked and creates space for difficult topics. Seeing listening as a practice of asking underscores the value of setting rules for engagement that promote a posture of reception that fosters trust and openness through humility, curiosity, and willingness to step into worlds different from one’s own. Embracing this mutual approach can prompt a more inclusive synodal process, enhancing the church’s ability to engage meaningfully with all in its midst.

Trynitarny wymiar życia ochrzczonych

Anna Klich

Towards Universal Communion

Simeiqi He

Beginning with the observation of a polarized public both in America and China after the US Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, this essay charts my reflection on the present issue regarding abortion and reproductive health in the US context and its global manifestation. It demonstrates my understanding that the current situation presents an opportunity for the actualization of universal communion. By rendering visible the international presence existing in American Catholic colleges and universities, I argue that Catholic higher education, by virtue of its institution and mission, ought to embody an open society that is driven by universal love. I propose that reasoned reflection and civil dialogue on the topic of abortion and reproductive health, if it is to be truly realized, must be guided by an ever-maturing faith and an absolute openness to truth that embrace the totality of life that is the world.

Artificial Intelligence and Moral Theology: A Conversation

Brian Patrick Green, Matthew J. Gaudet, Levi Checketts et al.

Engaging in a conversation on artificial intelligence, a group of philosophers and theologians engages key beliefs, theories, and approaches that span from theological doctrines (i.e., Creation and the imago Dei) to anthropological reflections on embodiment, body and mind, and moral agency and, at the same time, from a critical assessment of technological advances to examining their uses and implementations in diverse social contexts. While philosophical concerns and theological resources inform the conversation, proposals are made for careful implementation of artificial intelligence in educational settings, workplaces, and society at large.

Christian Ethical Analysis of the L.A. Riots in 1992: The Media and Institutional Racism

Yong Sup Song

This essay utilizes Reinhold Niebuhr’s theology of the universality of sin to analyze institutional racism, using the 1992 Los Angeles riots as a case study. Contrary to the conventional interpretation of the riots as a conflict between African Americans and Korean Americans, the pervasive institutional racism of the mainstream media of that era spread the riots into multiracial conflicts, which explains Niebuhr’s thinking regarding the universality of sin. Furthermore, the sensationalism of the media that fueled the massive violence deprived African Americans of the moral dynamic for social transformation and victimized Korean Americans as scapegoats. As a result, the institutional processes promoted the status quo that benefited the white privileged class at the expense of the racial minorities. Implications found in this essay may be applicable to current issues, such as anti-Asian racism that has surfaced during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

THE ECCLESIAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE LETTER OF THE POLISH BISHOPS TO THE GERMAN BISHOPS OF 1965

Żmudziński Marek

The effects of World War II influenced the relations between the nations of Europe. They also influenced the life of the Church in a universal way, because its members found themselves of both sides of the Iron Curtain. This was particularly visible in Polish-German relations. The Polish bishops, inspired by the message of the Gospel and the legacy of the Second Vatican Council, came forward with a proposal of initiating the process of reconciliation. The words, “we forgive and ask for forgiveness”, contained in the Letter to the German Bishops of 1965, became the inspiration for the years-long reconciliation effort. The specific results of this formula are indicated in the formal normalisation of the state and church relations. In the ecclesial dimension, it included a new canonical diocese order and cooperation on the pastoral, charitable and journalistic plane. The real influence of the Polish-German reconciliation on the process of integration of the peoples of Europe should be emphasised. In this sense, the influence of the Christian message on shaping the public sphere is revealed.

The reawakening of teaching through aesthetics in education: Students’ perspectives

Jugathambal Ramdhani, Sarita Ramsaroop

Abstract A multidisciplinary approach to teacher education involves drawing from multiple pedagogies within disciplines, in particular the use of aesthetic methods of teaching, to redefine teaching through continuous reflection. This article reports on the process of pre-service students’ interpretation of the sensory contemplation of aesthetic perceptiveness within their academic programmes at a higher education institution and explores how students internalised and applied these aesthetic qualities in their practice. Using a qualitative approach, the findings indicate the positive influence of aesthetically enjoyable and engaging teaching strategies, such as group or whole class discussions that infused technology, on pre-service students’ understanding of content knowledge taught in lectures. Reports regarding pre-service students’ application of these very strategies at schools during their school experience were positive in terms of their ability to reflect critically before, during and after the lesson, made possible by personal first-hand experiences with the selected strategy. It was found that pre-service teachers believe that for effective teaching to take place, as practitioners, they need to take ‘full account of the multi-dimensional cultural world of the learner’ and therefore it is recommended that they adopt a multi-dimensional approach that is inclusive of aesthetics in their practice. Dialectical Theology

shamsolmolouk mostafavi

Swiss reformed theologian and thinker, Karl Barth (1886-1968) is regarded as the founding father of neo-orthodoxy in Protestantism. In the post-World War world where religion was under constant attack by critics, people had lost their faith in God, and liberal orthodoxy had degraded religion to a historical phenomenon and a guarantee for moral values, Barth developed “dialectical theology” in order to save religion. This article seeks to take a brief look at the claims made by liberal theology and Barth’s criticisms against it, present dialectical theology as a replacement for liberal theology and shed light on Barth’s role in the history of modern thought.

Moral Theology

Jacqueline Laing

AbstractMoral theology is the study of how man must live in order to achieve his highest end, which is union with God. It is a species of theology, the study of things divine, and is distinct fromdogmatictheology by virtue of its focus. Whereas dogmatic theology concentrates upon doctrines and articles of faith, moral theology relates, more specifically to the actions of human beings and their relations to God. Moral theology naturally involves a discussion of ethics and the natural law, since this law is recognized also by divine revelation. It is not, however, co‐extensive with moral philosophy, since its subject matter derives generally from revelation and theological sources.
