David Brakke

A collection of extra-biblical scriptures written by the gnostics, updated with three ancient texts including the recently discovered Gospel of Judas. “The one indispensable book for the understanding of Gnosis and Gnosticism.”—Harold Bloom. This definitive introduction to the gnostic scriptures provides a crucial look at the theology, religious atmosphere, and literary traditions of ancient Christianity and Hellenistic Judaism. It provides authoritative translations of ancient texts from Greek, Latin, and Coptic, with introductions, bibliographies, and annotations. The texts are organized to reflect the history of gnosticism in the second through fourth century CE. Dorothy D. Stuck, Nan Snow

This is a book with a clear message and position. It argues that Jews cannot embrace the cultural components of Judaism without appreciating the legal aspects of the Jewish tradition. The author also endeavours to apply to Jewish law the method of cultural analysis used in secular legal studies. The book is also a call for a culturally nuanced approach to halakhah in order to meet contemporary challenges. This involves the rejection of Jewish law solely as the embodiment of divine law and instead offers an argument for the ‘‘gray of compromise’’—for diversity in a Judaism that openly accepts inconvenient social realities but that also recognizes the paramountcy of the halakhah as the basis of all Jewish life and thought. It seeks to find a middle ground between privileging the mesorah and the aggada. This ideological position might be considered predictable given the author’s background as a distinguished legal scholar, a Conservadox Jew and a woman who aspires to being a fully accepted and participating member of the community. That is not to say the arguments are all obvious. If one ignores the author’s repetitious obsession of trying to fit everything into a cultural analysis paradigm approach to Judaism she displays an impressive knowledge of traditional texts and sources. The historical coverage of the origins and norms of Jewish law and their development by the emerging Jewish denominations is thorough and rigorous. The contemporary topics surveyed in the chapters cover almost the whole ballpark of the issues facing Jews today. They include the role of the Israeli state; Women and synagogue ritual; Homosexuality; Who is a Jew?; Sabbath laws; Jewish identity in the U.S.; the BDS movement and anti-Semitism. The material covering questions and controversies where there is a clear cut relevance to halakhah are

Πάτερ ἡμῶν (Our Father) in Matthew 6:9: Reconstructing and negotiating a Christian identity in the 1st century CE

Fednand M. M’bwangi

To the question of why Matthew includes the phrase Πάτερ ἡμῶν (Our Father) in his version of the Lord’s Prayer, scholars guided by different theories answer this question differently. Employing literary criticism ranging from form, source and tradition history to reader–audience response and socio-rhetorical interpretation, scholars contend that Matthew composed the concept Πάτερ ἡμῶν (Our Father) as a crucial segment of his version of the Lord’s Prayer, either to present an opposition between Father who dwells in heaven and the Earth, which is humanity’s dwelling place, or to evoke a community relationship to God in the context of welcoming God’s rule, or to present the Lord’s Prayer as God’s gift for creating order, community and transformation in society. In view of this inconsistent conception of the function of Matthew’s concept ‘Our Father’, the goal of this study is to employ semantic analysis and social identity theory (SIT) to analyse Matthew 6:9 to defend the argument that Matthew employed the concept Πάτερ ἡμῶν in the 1st century CE firstly to reconstruct the Christian identity of his community by identifying with the early Christian community and accommodating Jewish traditions and then to negotiate it by contesting the Roman Empire. Contribution: The interdisciplinary contribution of the study in tandem with the expectations of HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies has been attained through the application of a collective SIT prism of identification, accommodation and contestation to read the social function of Matthew’s concept Πάτερ ἡμῶν in reconstructing and negotiating the identity of his community in 1st century Roman society.

History with Heart: Canadian Holocaust Literature for Young People

Joanna Krongold

This article addresses the emergence of the Canadian Holocaust literature canon for young readers, closely examining the work of Carol Matas and Kathy Kacer to explore how the Holocaust can be narrated for children. Largely understudied despite their productivity and popularity, Matas and Kacer rely on the narrative strategy of blending invented or imagined characters with factually accurate situations and experiences. By using the tools that historical fiction offers, these two prolific Canadian authors demonstrate the possibilities of multifaceted, educational, and engaging texts about the Holocaust for young people while preserving the “open hearts” of the characters at the centre of their stories.

‘I Do Think We Can Carry On’: The Women’s War Efforts Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress, 1939-1946

Jennifer Shaw

The Jewish community’s involvement in the Canadian war effort during the Second World War has been a topic of scholarly interest for decades. However, this scholarship has largely focused on the activities of men, whether as soldiers or members of volunteer organizations, most notably the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC). When women’s contributions are noted, it has generally been a mention of undefined volunteer work or their activities as soldiers’ wives and mothers, thus ignoring the monumental efforts of Jewish women. In particular, the Women’s War Efforts Committee (WWEC) of the CJC contributed thousands of hours of unpaid labour, fundraising, running a Next-of-Kin League for the wives, mothers, and children of enlisted men, and working with other women’s organizations for the war effort. However, it was their work on massive projects such as the furnishing of recreation spaces on armed forces bases and the opening of Servicemen’s Centres across Canada that would be most impactful. This paper will explore how the activities of the WWEC increased the visibility of the Jewish community in Canada and contributed to changing the public perception of Jews from that of an unwanted immigrant community to that of an accepted minority group. It will also examine the tensions between the men and women of the CJC and the shifting public roles of women within the Jewish community.

Oh, Bestia Synagoga! The Representation of Jews in Czech Sermons at the Turn of the 17th and 18th Centuries

Daniel Soukup

The main aim of this study is to present how early modern preaching in the Czech lands shaped the image of the local Jewish community in Christian eyes at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Bohemian and Moravian preachers, drawing from medieval literature, were fundamentally influenced by the traditional theological concept of Jews as a living witness to the Christian truth. At the same time, Baroque sermons reused medieval exempla and miracula preserving typical anti-Jewish narratives. Due to the increasing number of Bohemian and Moravian Jewry at the end of 17th century, and the socio-economical tension between Christian and Jewish communities, catholic preachers pursued contemporary topics and criticized unpermitted contacts, allegedly leading to the inferior status of Christians. On the other hand, these critical notes usually were targeted primarily on Christian believers and their laxity in the observance of religious life, as well as ignorance of social hierarchy. Although the Czech Catholic sermons constructed the hostile perception of Jews, the preachers endeavoured to avoid vulgar anti-Judaism and partly smoothed popular anti-Jewish sentiments.

The Road Less Traveled By. Om Guds vägar och andra

Jesper Svartvik

This article summarises the four responses to The Ways of God. Whereas the commentators agree that the document is impressive, they nevertheless wish to draw attention to three shortcomings: the portrayal of Judaism is strikingly «Christianised»; the discussion of Christology is inconclusive; and the paragraph on «the Land» is inadequate. This article also seeks to further the discussion by suggesting that three topics need to be considered in the future: Christians need to know more about Torah-centred post-biblical Judaism; presentations which give vent to disrespect for Judaism need to be revised or refuted; and, finally, Christians need to ponder the consequences of the Jewish-Christian dialogue as it calls for a theological evaluation of insular understandings of Christianity: no religion is an island.

O sacrifício dos circuncisos

Deana Barroqueiro

“A source of satisfaction to all Jews, wherever they may be living”. Louis Miller between New York and Tel Aviv, 1911

Ehud Manor

Although throughout the middle-ages Jews used to live in urban environment more than non-Jews, urbanization process in the 19th century was as critical to Jewish modern history as in other cases. Modernization, in all aspects, had a deep impact on Jewish demography, socio-economic life and self understanding. On the same time Jews were immigrating by the millions to the “new world” (mainly to the United States), a small current of Jews was heading to Palestine (Eretz Israel if to use their specific term). As opposed to a common understanding of Zionism, the future city and the neo-urbanization of the Jews – and not only the new villages (Moshavot, Kibbutzim, Moshavim) – was a main Zionist goal. This article describes one of the first comprehensive observations of these issues, as seen from the eyes of Louis Miller, himself a Jewish immigrant that settled in the outmost city of the modern world: New York. In 1911 he paid a visit to the one-year-old Tel Aviv, and managed to see in this new modest garden-city the cradle of the Zionist revolution. Not less important: Miller understood as early as 1911, the crucial role Jewish settlements in Palestine would have in the crystallization of modern Jewish peoplehood. Tel Aviv took major part in this development. It still does.

Oltre la Bibbia. Il cinema tra narrazione e redenzione

Mino Chamla

In the Jewish tradition, the Bible is the origin of any possible interpretative and narrative development. Thus, starting from this statement and in the belief that film is, in its essence, narration and not representation, the author makes some remarks on the close and intimate relationship among Judaism, Jews and film, but also on the difficulty that movies have always experienced in the direct confrontation with the Bible while pretending to “represent it”. Moreover, if the cinema is mainly narrative and creative development of reality, we have to speak, with Walter Benjamin and Sigfried Kracauer, as for the Seventh art, about a sort of redemption of reality, in assonance, here again, with some profound and important trends of Judaism, and especially of the modern Jewish thought.
