Original Feminsims Or Mwenkanonkano In Uganda: Indigenous Voices In Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi’s The First Woman

Lara Tortosa Signes

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the novel The First Woman by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi in the context of indigenous feminism(s). In the narrative, the protagonist discovers “the original state” of women according to the story she hears from the town witch, Nsuuta: before patriarchy, women were free like bodies of water, shapeless, inconstant, untamed. This original state has been suppressed by centuries of male dominance, but mwenkanonkano (the name the author gives to local feminism) is present in the life of many women who defy discrimination every day with their mere existence and the way they conduct their life. Nsuuta, by orally rendering the myths surrounding womanhood and passing them on to Kirabo, is writing (hi)story, legitimating it in their Ugandan context. Therefore, I argue that Makumbi conveys the need of an intersectional feminism which takes into consideration the life experiences of those women who are (and were) speaking up from their (un)comfortable homes. The author proves how significant these overlooked testimonies are since they are powerful examples of female survival in a society dominated by two intertwined forces: phallocracy and colonialism.

Recognizing the need for standardized training for community health workers (CHWs)

Shilpa Kalluru, Savannah Pearson Ayala, Dana Peters et al.

Abstract Introduction Despite global improvements in maternal health, disparities in maternal mortality rates in the United States have worsened in recent years. Community health workers (CHWs) as maternal health educators have previously been studied in low‐ and middle‐income countries, however their use in the United States has been limited. Methodology To address the ongoing disparities in maternal mortality, we conducted a mixed methods pilot study consisting of discussion groups and a written survey with CHWs in two boroughs in NYC. The study's goal was to identify and explore CHW professional training, their daily tasks, and roles as well as their insights and perspectives regarding the needs of their pregnant clients. Results Eighteen CHWs participated in the discussion groups and 11 participated in the survey. Participants were predominantly Black and/or Latina. Key themes were very consistent across group discussion and survey data. Major themes were a lack of standardized training for CHWs on basic maternal health topics, the existence of racism and bias in the provision of care for Black and other minority individuals, along with pregnant peoples’ needs for support to better advocate to overcome systemic barriers. Conclusion This study suggests that targeted maternal health training of CHWs is needed to better enable them to identify pregnancy risks and advance health literacy and promote self‐advocacy among their pregnant clients. This will ultimately yield a more effective CHW workforce and better health outcomes for pregnant people.

Navigating TRAP Laws, Protesters, and Police Presence at a Midwestern Abortion Clinic in the United States: A Case Study

Shara Crookston

Patient-level outcomes are frequently the focus of research on restrictive abortion laws, and qualitative literature examining the experiences of volunteers and non-physicians is sparse. To better understand how TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Provider) laws and abortion restrictions affect abortion clinic operations in the United States, I conducted a case study of 11 non-physician staff and volunteers at an abortion clinic in a low-income, Midwestern city. Findings include participants negotiating troublesome and costly TRAP laws, specifically the process of obtaining a transfer agreement with a local hospital in order to stay open. Study participants felt safe at the clinic due to their relationship with local police. Lastly, participants commented on a recent increase in protester presence, but acknowledged that other clinics experience even worse harassment. I conclude that non-physician experiences should be included when we are examining the impact of TRAP laws and abortion restrictions if we are to provide a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of abortion work. These interviews provide qualitative data on the experiential evidence of the impact of TRAP laws and abortion restrictions which are the consequence of various Supreme Court decisions over the past several decades.

Analysis of the Role and Status of Women in the Kermanshahan Tribe in the Qajar era, Relying on Historical Evidence

Hasan Karimian, Farid Ahmadzadeh, Hamid Norasi

The aim of this study is to understand the status of Kurdish women in the Kermanshahan tribe community in the Qajar era and their impacts on social, economic, and political structures based on traveler's reports, documents and documented archaeological data in the region. Travelers provided the researchers with a plenty of unique information about the life of the nomads and the tribes and other aspects of the social life of the women. They consider women to be the backbone of any effort and believe they have played an important role in the sustainability of the family and the tribe system. An interesting point is related to the preserved gravestone of women in this area, which belongs to the Qajar era. The motifs of the gravestones of the Kermanshahan tribe community have reflected the social and individual status of the deceased in their time. Therefore, this research is based on a descriptive and analytical approach and based on library resources and field data. Research findings show that Kurdish women in the Kermanshahan tribe community in the Qajar era have played the undeniable role in social, political and economic structures. Thus, we witness the presence of Kurdish women among the Kermanshahan tribesmen in the role of the lord and as the head of the society, the women as land owners, production of handicrafts and their role in the "waqf" operation.

Silvane Magali Vale Nascimento

This paper brings brief reflections on the barbarism that expresses the contemporary crisis of capital worldwide in a voracious process of oppression (exploitation and domination) of the working class and its fractions. It points out that such a crisis differs in terms of the structural class components that underpin the domination of capital, such as race / ethnicity and gender. For this reason, women who are part of the working class, and especially black women, are deeply affected in the processes of ongoing barbarism; hence, feminism becomes an important social movement in confronting capital. It analyzes how the legitimation of barbarism occurs in a process of naturalization of the consequences of the accumulation of capital as part of the ideological strategy of alienation of social subjects and for this reason presents the category of alienation and consciousness as fundamental to the political struggle of feminism.

ALI-MENTI: DONNA E ALIMENTI SURREALI

Ludovica Radif

Mujeres artistas y arquitectura / Female Artists and architecture

Abstract Women have historically been linked to the domestic-private sphere. In gender values, these space divisions have been very important. These space divisions have traditionally been considered based on binary positions according to gender: public versus private, external versus internal work, within a system of social organization based on a complex network of symbols. In art, many women work and reflect on their artistic projects about the domestic or private sphere. Women’s confinement to the private sphere for centuries has enabled them to tackle certain issues in their artistic productions such as the home and the roles the women have usually played in this space. Keywords: architecture, art and women.
