Scout: Leveraging Large Language Models for Rapid Digital Evidence Discovery

Shariq Murtuza

Recent technological advancements and the prevalence of technology in day to day activities have caused a major increase in the likelihood of the involvement of digital evidence in more and more legal investigations. Consumer-grade hardware is growing more powerful, with expanding memory and storage sizes and enhanced processor capabilities. Forensics investigators often have to sift through gigabytes of data during an ongoing investigation making the process tedious. Memory forensics, disk analysis all are well supported by state of the art tools that significantly lower the effort required to be put in by a forensic investigator by providing string searches, analyzing images file etc. During the course of the investigation a lot of false positives are identified that need to be lowered. This work presents Scout, a digital forensics framework that performs preliminary evidence processing and prioritizing using large language models. Scout deploys foundational language models to identify relevant artifacts from a large number of potential evidence files (disk images, captured network packets, memory dumps etc.) which would have taken longer to get identified. Scout employs text based large language models can easily process files with textual information. For the forensic analysis of multimedia files like audio, image, video, office documents etc. multimodal models are employed by Scout. Scout was able to identify and realize the evidence file that were of potential interest for the investigator.

Blacks is to Anger as Whites is to Joy? Understanding Latent Affective Bias in Large Pre-trained Neural Language Models

Anoop Kadan, Deepak P., Sahely Bhadra et al.

Groundbreaking inventions and highly significant performance improvements in deep learning based Natural Language Processing are witnessed through the development of transformer based large Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs). The wide availability of unlabeled data within human generated data deluge along with self-supervised learning strategy helps to accelerate the success of large PLMs in language generation, language understanding, etc. But at the same time, latent historical bias/unfairness in human minds towards a particular gender, race, etc., encoded unintentionally/intentionally into the corpora harms and questions the utility and efficacy of large PLMs in many real-world applications, particularly for the protected groups. In this paper, we present an extensive investigation towards understanding the existence of "Affective Bias" in large PLMs to unveil any biased association of emotions such as anger, fear, joy, etc., towards a particular gender, race or religion with respect to the downstream task of textual emotion detection. We conduct our exploration of affective bias from the very initial stage of corpus level affective bias analysis by searching for imbalanced distribution of affective words within a domain, in large scale corpora that are used to pre-train and fine-tune PLMs. Later, to quantify affective bias in model predictions, we perform an extensive set of class-based and intensity-based evaluations using various bias evaluation corpora. Our results show the existence of statistically significant affective bias in the PLM based emotion detection systems, indicating biased association of certain emotions towards a particular gender, race, and religion.

A review of individual tree crown detection and delineation from optical remote sensing images

Juepeng Zheng, Shuai Yuan, Weijia Li et al.

Powered by the advances of optical remote sensing sensors, the production of very high spatial resolution multispectral images provides great potential for achieving cost-efficient and high-accuracy forest inventory and analysis in an automated way. Lots of studies that aim at providing an inventory to the level of each individual tree have generated a variety of methods for Individual Tree Crown Detection and Delineation (ITCD). This review covers ITCD methods for detecting and delineating individual tree crowns, and systematically reviews the past and present of ITCD-related researches applied to the optical remote sensing images. With the goal to provide a clear knowledge map of existing ITCD efforts, we conduct a comprehensive review of recent ITCD papers to build a meta-data analysis, including the algorithm, the study site, the tree species, the sensor type, the evaluation method, etc. We categorize the reviewed methods into three classes: (1) traditional image processing methods (such as local maximum filtering, image segmentation, etc.); (2) traditional machine learning methods (such as random forest, decision tree, etc.); and (3) deep learning based methods. With the deep learning-oriented approaches contributing a majority of the papers, we further discuss the deep learning-based methods as semantic segmentation and object detection methods. In addition, we discuss four ITCD-related issues to further comprehend the ITCD domain using optical remote sensing data, such as comparisons between multi-sensor based data and optical data in ITCD domain, comparisons among different algorithms and different ITCD tasks, etc. Finally, this review proposes some ITCD-related applications and a few exciting prospects and potential hot topics in future ITCD research.

Data Behind the Walls An Advanced Architecture for Data Privacy Management

Amen Faridoon, M. Tahar Kechadi

In today's highly connected society, we are constantly asked to provide personal information to retailers, voter surveys, medical professionals, and other data collection efforts. The collected data is stored in large data warehouses. Organisations and statistical agencies share and use this data to facilitate research in public health, economics, sociology, etc. However, this data contains sensitive information about individuals, which can result in identity theft, financial loss, stress and depression, embarrassment, abuse, etc. Therefore, one must ensure rigorous management of individuals' privacy. We propose, an advanced data privacy management architecture composed of three layers. The data management layer consists of de-identification and anonymisation, the access management layer for re-enforcing data access based on the concepts of Role-Based Access Control and the Chinese Wall Security Policy, and the roles layer for regulating different users. The proposed system architecture is validated on healthcare datasets.

Édouard Glissant e Salman Rushdie. Pensare il mondo, scrivere il mondo

Mattia Bonasia

Work Systems Modeling Library

Henderik A. Proper

Modeling of work systems occurs for all sorts of reasons. Requirements need to be expressed. A pre-existing situation may need to be charted and analyzed. Early design decisions may be captured using architecture principles. Detailed design may be worked out. We all regard these activities as essentially being forms of modeling. In the work systems modeling library, we consider work system engineering from a modeling perspective. In the field of work system engineering, a whole plethora of modeling methods is available to system engineers and architects. Each of these methods can be used to model some (aspects) of a domain related to an existing and/or a planned work system. The aspects may refer to requirements, architecture, design, processing, data, etc, etc. In other words, these methodes are essentially all intended to model different aspects of work systems and/or their context. The aim of the work systems modeling library (WSML) is to bring together methodical knowledge concerning the modeling of work systems.

Short-term Electric Load Forecasting Using TensorFlow and Deep Auto-Encoders

Xin Shi

This paper conducts research on the short-term electric load forecast method under the background of big data. It builds a new electric load forecast model based on Deep Auto-Encoder Networks (DAENs), which takes into account multidimensional load-related data sets including historical load value, temperature, day type, etc. A new distributed short-term load forecast method based on TensorFlow and DAENs is therefore proposed, with an algorithm flowchart designed. This method overcomes the shortcomings of traditional neural network methods, such as over-fitting, slow convergence and local optimum, etc. Case study results show that the proposed method has obvious advantages in prediction accuracy, stability, and expansibility compared with those based on traditional neural networks. Thus, this model can better meet the demands of short-term electric load forecasting under big data scenario.

Meteois published in 1996: it is a book of poetry by Andrea Zanzotto, whose main characteristics are fragmentism, precariousness, hybridism. The aim is to give form, within the textual space of verses, to the representation of a devasted world, that evokes childhood’s objects and places in order to overturn its significance, and erases historical and chronological time, through a broken down language.

A survey of comics research in computer science

Olivier Augereau, Motoi Iwata, Koichi Kise

Graphical novels such as comics and mangas are well known all over the world. The digital transition started to change the way people are reading comics, more and more on smartphones and tablets and less and less on paper. In the recent years, a wide variety of research about comics has been proposed and might change the way comics are created, distributed and read in future years. Early work focuses on low level document image analysis: indeed comic books are complex, they contains text, drawings, balloon, panels, onomatopoeia, etc. Different fields of computer science covered research about user interaction and content generation such as multimedia, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, etc. with different sets of values. We propose in this paper to review the previous research about comics in computer science, to state what have been done and to give some insights about the main outlooks.

Dovrai svegliarti con l’allodola. L’esperienza letteraria come superamento del populismo

Pino Menzio

Natalia Ginzburg’s Family Sayings(1963) represents not only a sociolinguistic discovery (the broad notion of «lessico famigliare»), but also an unintentional anticipation of the idea of literature as «re-use discourse» (Wiedergebrauchsrede), which Franco Brioschi developed some years later. Ginzburg clearly shows how an utterance can become more and more independent from its original enunciation context and break free from its own literal meaning, also working as a device of mutual recognition within a speaking community. The primary medium to achieve this metamorphosis is repetition, which can make a certain discourse ‘special’ and apt to convey additional values – as it happens in the case of poetic language.

The article aims to describe the fundamental points of the literary theory of Pietro Citati. The theoretical discourse is particularly based on three principles, among their integrated, which also constitute specific methods of reading the texts: metamorphosis, analogy, harmonia mundi. In the literary works the scholar searchs for the signs of these ancient knwoledges: a metamorphic conception of life as substance in perennial flux and as cycle of death and resurrection, the ability of man to reconstruct a connection among the elements of the universe, the recovery of a symbiosis between microcosm and macrocosm. A vast but homogeneous constellation of traditions presides to this theoretical paradigm, from Christianity to ancient greek thought, the gnosis and neoplatonic philosophies of Renaissance; from this perspective, Citati reads the great texts of the world literary canon from Homer to Goethe to Proust.
