Nominalisation of phrasal verbs in the -ing forms with a plural marker (goings-on, coming outs): a study of nominal characteristics

Marie Turlais

This article studies the formation and meaning of deverbal phrasal nouns such as goings-on or coming outs in relation to the prototypical characteristics of the nominal category. I will study the morphological, syntactic and semantic aspects of pluralised -ing nominalisations of phrasal verbs to show that this derivation process creates prototypical nouns. These constructions bear some resemblance to compound nouns, and are sometimes treated as such in the literature, but they are actually unprototypical compounds at best. Finally, two types of variation can be observed in the data: the location of the plural marker -s, which can fall either on the lexical base or on the right-hand particle, suggests two possible interpretations of the whole constituent, while the existence of competing nominalisations that do not feature the -ing suffix (a weighing-in // a weigh-in) indicates that the suffix triggers eventive readings of the nouns.

A reconstruction of multipreference closure

Laura Giordano, Valentina Gliozzi

Abstract The paper describes a preferential approach for dealing with exceptions in KLM preferential logics, based on the rational closure. It is well known that rational closure does not allow an independent handling of inheritance of different defeasible properties of concepts. In this work, we consider an alternative closure construction, called Multi Preference closure (MP-closure), which has been first considered for reasoning with exceptions in DLs. We reconstruct the notion of MP-closure in the propositional case and show that it is a natural (weaker) variant of Lehmann's lexicographic closure, which appears to be too bold in some cases. The MP-closure defines a preferential consequence relation that, although weaker than lexicographic closure, is stronger than Relevant Closure.

Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming for Energy-Efficient Container Handling: Formulation and Customized Genetic Algorithm

Jianbin Xin, Chuang Meng, A. D’Ariano et al.

Energy consumption is expected to be reduced while maintaining high productivity for container handling. This paper investigates a new energy-efficient scheduling problem of automated container terminals, in which quay cranes (QCs) and lift automated guided vehicles (AGVs) cooperate to handle inbound and outbound containers. In our scheduling problem, operation times and task sequences are both to be determined. The underlying optimization problem is mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). To deal with its computational intractability, a customized and efficient genetic algorithm (GA) is developed to solve the studied MINLP problem, and lexicographic and weighted-sum strategies are further considered. An $\epsilon $ -constraint algorithm is also developed to analyze the Pareto frontiers. Comprehensive experiments are tested on a container handling benchmark system, and the results show the effectiveness of the proposed lexicographic GA, compared to results obtained with two commonly-used metaheuristics, a commercial MINLP solver, and two state-of-the-art methods.

Big Things Often Have Small Beginnings: A Review on the Development, Use and Value of Small and Big Corpora for Flemish Sign Language Linguistic Research

Beatrijs Wille, Inez Beukeleers, Mieke Van Herreweghe et al.

In 1990, Vermeerbergen started the first larger-scale corpus study with (semi)spontaneous language data from adult signers on the morpho-syntactic aspects of Flemish Sign Language (VGT). After this, a number of lexicographic projects, including the collection of a 90-h corpus, led to the launch of the first online bilingual Dutch/VGT—VGT/Dutch dictionary in 2004. Since then, researchers have developed several corpora of variable sizes, with the greatest realization being the VGT Corpus. The main focus of this chapter is twofold. On the one hand the run-up to, the development and the use of the VGT Corpus will be discussed, while on the other hand smaller specific research corpora will be highlighted such as the corpus on early parent-child interaction and the multifocal eye-tracking corpus. The current chapter will discuss the research and community value of the corpora and future directions. Finally, it will elaborate on the need for corpus research, the associated advantages and disadvantages, and the obstacles faced in smaller deaf communities.

Ethical Decision-Making Platform in Autonomous Vehicles With Lexicographic Optimization Based Model Predictive Controller

Hong Wang, Yanjun Huang, A. Khajepour et al.

Ethical decision-making during inevitable crashes, especially when humans involved, has become a big and sensitive roadblock for future mass adoption of autonomous vehicles. Towards addressing this challenge, this paper proposes a predictive control framework for ethical decision-making in autonomous driving using rational ethics. For flexibly implementing of ethical rules, the Lexicographic Optimization-based model predictive controller (LO-MPC) has been designed, in which obstacles and constraints are prioritized. Simulation environment is set up in PreScan, with different edge cases. The results show that the proposed LO-MPC approach has the capability to deal with the ethical decision-making during inevitable crashes by avoiding the obstacles with the assumed priority orders compared with traditional decision-making algorithm.

Classification of dictionaries of terms in special lexicography

Тетяна Олексіївна Петрова

The article is devoted to one of the recent problems of terminography, which studies terminological dictionaries, deals with the development of principles and bases how to comply terminological lexicons of different types, concerns with their classification, as well as arrangement and unification of national terminology. The problem of classification of terminographic editions is of great importance: it constantly attracts meticulous attention of Ukrainian and foreign linguists, however nowadays there is no any unified set of features for distinguishing dictionaries. Is was specified that modern terminological lexicography requires a classified description of terminological dictionaries of different types. Linguists create typologies, classifications, as well as specific and typological classifications of dictionaries. Schematically, the hierarchy of subordination of special editions can be displayed as it follows: linguistic dictionaries (type) → system dictionaries (subtype) → professional dictionaries (class) → terminological dictionaries (kind) → … (variable kinds). The meaning of the term „typology” is broader than the essence of the concept „classification”. Correspondingly, it is proposed to use the term classification of terminological dictionaries to denote an arranged description of terminographic editions with their division into types, subtypes, classes, and subclasses according to common features and purpose. It is found out that examined reliable typologies and classifications of terminological dictionaries are structured as taxonomic systems based on pragmatic features. They determine the special purpose of dictionaries, divide them according to structural, functional and other features, and establish characteristic features of mega-, macro-, and microstructure of editions. The researched typologies and classifications are not complete, as they focus only on available terminological dictionaries. The necessity of terminological edition classification was proved; it should be noted that possible perspective of variable kinds of special editions for the needs of time and science should be taked into the account, in particular, the “dictionary of the future” – a terminological dictionary of a combined type.

Iran's Influential Correspondence Writers in Court Literature )Literary Return to the Nasser Al-Din Shah's Era(

mohsen roustaei, دکتر سیدکاظم موسوی, دکتر اسماعیل صادقی et al.

During the period of literary return, the epistemology of the secretary and the teachings of epistemology writing flourished, and abiding works emerged in the form of social-court literature. Understanding the concept of epistemology writing and the introduction of stylistic epistemology writers in Iranian court literature is one of the main objectives of this study, which is revealed through biographies, literary status and stylistic and individual characteristics. This article is descriptive-analytical and where necessary, discusses practical definitions, types of correspondence, epistemology writers (stylist), etc. In order to match the title and content of this article with a historical and literary perspective, we have used all available sources and references, epistemology books, court documents and correspondences. One of the main findings of this study is the causes and factors that have influenced the stylistic characteristics of epistemology writers during Zand and Qajar dynasties. Literary device mastery, gaining posts in state (court), thinkers’ appraisal on their style and following orders on correspondence formats are factors that influenced their particular writing style. Another result of this article is the association with the genre of court literature, in which epistemology writing and epistemology writers can make a significant contribution to the evolution of scribe's prose and social and court lexicography.

Integrating Terminological Resources in Dictionary Portals: The Case of the Diccionarios Valladolid-UVa

Pedro A. Fuertes-Olivera, M.A. Esandi-Baztan

This paper advocates the convergence of terminology and lexicography, and illustrates this view by presenting some of the steps taken for incorporating terminological resources and ideas in an online dictionary portal that is being constructed at the University of Valladolid (Spain). This dictionary portal contains several dictionary types, was designed by the same team and is being constructed from the same theoretical perspective, regardless of whether some of the lexical items included are judged "lexicographic", i.e. related to general language expressions, or "terminological", i.e. connected with terms. In addition to dealing with certain basic tenets of dictionary portals, the paper describes an ad-hoc typology of definitions that has been created for two main reasons. Firstly, it makes the process of compilation easier, more uniform, and more readily systematised, thus facilitating the efforts of different people in different places at different times. Secondly, these definitions will feed the Spanish–English Write Assistant, a commercially driven language tool that uses a language module based on statistics and is in the process of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, e.g. machine learning and neural networks, for creating patterns. We have found that precise definitions, similar to terminological (i.e. encyclopaedic) definitions, for most lemmas increase the tool's functions. Such definitions offer a very different picture of current monolingual Spanish and bilingual Spanish–English dictionaries.

Defining collocation for Slovenian lexical resources

Iztok Kosem, Simon Krek, Polona Gantar

In this paper, we define the notion of collocation for the purpose of its use in machine-readable language resources, which will be used in the creation of electronic dictionaries and language applications for Slovene. Based on theoretical and lexicographically-driven studies we define collocation as a lexical phenomenon, defined by three key aspects: statistical, syntactic, and semantic. We take lexicographic relevance as a point of departure for defining collocations within the typology of word combinations, as well as for distinguishing them from free combinations. Free combinations are (frequent) syntactically valid word combinations without lexicographic value and consequently there is no need for the description of their meaning, or syntactic role. Next, we distinguish collocations from all multiword lexical units (compounds, phraseological units and lexico-grammatical units) using the lexicographic view that multiword lexical units, whose meaning is not a sum of its parts, require a description of their meaning whereas collocations do not. In the final part, we return to the three aspects of collocation and their role in automatic extraction of collocational information from corpora. Semantic criterion or dictionary relevance of extracted collocations has particularly exposed the problem of semantically broad collocates such as certain types of adverbs, adjectives and verbs, and word which feature in different syntactic roles (e.g. pronouns and adjuncts). We discuss a particular issue of collocations related to proper names and the decisions about their inclusion into the dictionary based on the evaluation of lexicographers.
