AbstractIn the present study, a natural-based heterogeneous catalyst is synthesized. For this purpose, nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) is prepared, silica-modified and functionalized with phthalimide. Finally, Ag2+was immobilized onto n-HA/Si-PA-SC and reduced to Ag nanoparticles byBellis perennisflowers extract. n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag characterized by TGA, FTIR, SEM/EDX, XRD, TEM, BET and ICP-AES techniques. Moreover, metal–ligand interactions in n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag complex models were assessed to make a quantitative representation for the immobilization behavior of Ag NPs on the surface of n-HA/Si-PA-SC through quantum chemistry computations. Furthermore, the performance of n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag was studied in the nitroarene, methylene blue and congo red reductions. Finally, the recyclability study as well as Ag-leaching verified that, n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag was stable and reused-up to four times without losing its activity.

AbstractProtein structure–function relationship serves as the primary learning outcome in any undergraduate biochemistry course. We expanded the protein structure–function exploration, PSFE initiative during COVID‐19 to provide more effective and engaging experience to our undergraduates in biochemistry and independent research courses. Multiple alignments of protein sequences provided crucial insight into sequence conservation across many species and thus allow identification of those sections of the sequence most critical to protein function. We used Anabaena Sensory Rhodopsin, ASR its transducer, ASRT and downstream novel kinase gene products of Anabaena PCC 7120 to seek their alignment with homologs in available database. Pymol served an opportunity to achieve this goal (interactive learning during lab session and stimulation of course content discussion) in interesting ways. The PSFE initiative expansion continued during pandemic using online/hybrid modality. Initially model examples all helical ASR and beta‐sheet ASRT were introduced to connect and integrate our ongoing research interest into classroom activities. Subsequently, undergraduates in biochemistry course were assigned a homolog of model proteins any particular protein of students choice to study and characterize using Pymol in semester. During first phase, each undergraduate worked independently using established guidelines. Student's exploration progress was periodically reviewed in pilot phase with majority of students who perceived it as challenging task successfully completed the assignment. Using the PyMol application to reinforce visual understanding of protein structure was highly satisfying experience that greatly enriched undergraduates understanding and appreciation. This article reports a session from the virtual international 2021 IUBMB/ASBMB workshop, “Teaching Science on BigData.”

Efficacy studies were conducted during June-July in 2017 and 2018 at two locations in district Baramulla of Jammu and Kashmir against the phytophagous mite Panonychus ulmi (Koch) in apple orchards. The test molecule Fenazaquin 20 SC at the dosages of 15, 20 and 25 ml along with standard check Hexythiazox 5.45 EC and Fenazaquin 10 SC at 40 ml per 100 litre of water were evaluated against Panonychus ulmi. After fifteen days of spray, maximum 90.45 and 87.99 per cent ERM mortality of was obtained from Fenazaquin 20 SC @ 25 ml in both the years at location Ferozpura, Rafiabad; whereas, at another location Chitkak (Handwara), Kupwara, highest ERM mortality of 84.95 and 90.18 per cent was recorded during both the respective years. The least mortality of natural enemies Coccinellids (pooled for two years) as 23.32 and 22.91 per cent was recorded with the test chemical Fenazaquin 20 SC @ 15 ml per litre of water; whereas, highest mortality of 32.09 and 30.46 was recorded with test molecule @ 25 ml. in Ferozpura, Rafiabad; and Chitkak (Handwara), Kupwara. Similarly, the least mortality of Amblyseius spp. as 34.50 and 33.38 per cent too was recorded with the Fenazaquin 20 SC @ 15 ml per litre of water. The highest yield of apples was recorded with application of Fenazaquin 20 EC @ 25ml in both the locations.
