This paper investigates the nature of the development of vortex shedding for two-dimensional unsteady flow of an incompressible fluid at the rear stagnation point.

It is shown how the variable density model (VDM) that governs the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) for the miscible mixing of two incompressible fluids can be transformed into a diffusive version of the inhomogeneous, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by gradients of the composition density $ρ$ of the mixing layer. This demonstrates how buoyancy-driven flows drive and enhance Navier-Stokes turbulence. The role of the potential vorticity $q = ω\cdot\nablaρ$ is also discussed.

Scaling of turbulent wall-bounded flows is revealed in the gradient structures, for each of the Reynolds stress components. Within the dissipation structure, an asymmetrical order exists, that we can deploy to unify the scaling and transport dynamics within and across these flows. There are subtle differences in the outer boundary conditions between channel and flat-plate boundary-layer flows, which modify the turbulence structure far from the wall. The self-similarity exhibited in the dissipation structures and corresponding transport dynamics establish capabilities and encompassing knowledge of wall-bounded turbulent flows.

Can a classical system as walking oil droplets on a vibrating surface simulate the single and double slit Quantum Mechanics experiment? A systematic investigation reveals that the answer is no, but that the classical system exhibits rich and fascinating structures.

It is shown that the second-order moment of helicity distribution (the Levich-Tsinober invariant of inviscid hydrodynamics) can be preserved as an adiabatic invariant in magnetohydrodynamics. The distributed chaos approach and inertial range phenomenology have been developed for the magnetohydrodynamic processes dominated by this adiabatic invariant, and some consequences of the theoretical consideration have been compared with results of direct numerical simulations and measurements in the solar wind. Helical scaling in interstellar MHD turbulence has been also briefly discussed in this context.

We study the scaling properties of two-dimensional turbulence using dimensional analysis. In particular, we consider the energy spectrum both at large and small scales and in the "inertial ranges" for the cases of freely decaying and forced turbulence. We also investigate the properties of an "energy condensate" at large scales in spatially finite systems. Finally, an analysis of a possible inverse cascade in freely decaying turbulence is presented.

The motion of weakly inertial Brownian particles, transported by steady two-dimensional fluid flows, is investigated by means of asymptotic methods. We focus on the phenomenon of noise-induced separatrix crossing, which can force particles to enter or exit recirculation cells in an unpredictable manner. An analytical expression for the probability of separatrix crossing is obtained. It can be applied to a wide variety of flows, provided some elementary kinematical quantities of the fluid flow are known. It does not require to solve particle trajectories.

The flowfield resulting from a starting source type singularity is presented. This is a generalization of the classical source in potential flow to time dependent situations, including sources in oncoming flow. This model is applicable to initial spreading of oil on the surface of the sea resulting from an underwater leak

Numerical simulations of the G.O. Roberts dynamo are presented. Dynamos both with and without a significant mean field are obtained. Exact bounds are derived for the total energy which conform with the Kolmogorov phenomenology of turbulence. Best fits to numerical data show the same functional dependences as the inequalities obtained from optimum theory.

Based on the Karman-Howarth equation in 3D incompressible fluid, a new isotropic turbulence scale evolution equation and its related theory progress. The present results indicate that the energy cascading process has remarkable similarities with the determinisitic construction rules of the isotonic oscillators in quantum mechanics.

The net steady state flow pattern of a distorting sphere is studied in the framework of the bilinear theory of swimming at low Reynolds number. It is argued that the starting point of a theory of interacting active particles should be based on such a calculation, since any arbitrarily chosen steady state flow pattern is not necessarily the result of a swimming motion. Furthermore, it is stressed that as a rule the phase of stroke is relevant in hydrodynamic interactions, so that the net flow pattern must be used with caution.

Clathrin and the multi-subunit adaptor protein complex AP2 are central players in clathrin-mediated endocytosis by which the cell selectively internalizes surface materials. Here, we report the essential role of clathrin and AP2 in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. In Caenorhabditis elegans, depletion of the clathrin heavy chain CHC-1 and individual components of AP2 led to a significant accumulation of germ cell corpses, which resulted from defects in both cell corpse engulfment and phagosome maturation required for corpse removal. CHC-1 and AP2 components associate with phagosomes in an inter-dependent manner. Importantly, we found that the phagocytic receptor CED-1 interacts with the α subunit of AP2, while the CED-6/Gulp adaptor forms a complex with both CHC-1 and the AP2 complex, which likely mediates the rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton required for cell corpse engulfment triggered by the CED-1 signaling pathway. In addition, CHC-1 and AP2 promote the phagosomal association of LST-4/Snx9/18/33 and DYN-1/dynamin by forming a complex with them, thereby facilitating the maturation of phagosomes necessary for corpse degradation. These findings reveal a non-classical role of clathrin and AP2 and establish them as indispensable regulators in phagocytic receptor-mediated apoptotic cell clearance.

Prediction is a fundamental objective of science. It is more difficult for chaotic and complex systems like turbulence. Here we use information theory to quantify spatial prediction using experimental data from a turbulent soap film. At high Reynolds number $Re$ where a cascade exists, turbulence is becoming easier to predict as the inertial range broadens. A transition corresponding to the emergence of a cascade at low $Re$ is detected by looking at turbulence through prediction.

Alcoholism is a chronic relapsing disorder characterized by continued alcohol use despite numerous adverse consequences. Alcohol has been shown to interact with numerous neurotransmitter systems to exert its pharmacological effects. The endogenous opioid system (EOS) has been strongly implicated in the positive and negative reinforcing effects of alcohol. Traditionally recognized as dysphoric/anhedonic in nature, the dynorphin/kappa-opioid receptor (DYN/KOR) system has recently received considerable attention due to evidence suggesting that an upregulated DYN/KOR system may be a critical contributor to the complex factors that result in escalated alcohol consumption once dependent. The present review will discuss alcohol-induced plasticity in the DYN/KOR system and how these neuroadaptations could contribute to excessive alcohol seeking and consumption.
