Factors of Safety and Reliability in Geotechnical Engineering

J. Duncan

Simple reliability analyses, involving neither complex theory nor unfamiliar terms, can be used in routine geotechnical engineering practice. These simple reliability analyses require little effort beyond that involved in conventional geotechnical analyses. They provide a means of evaluating the combined effects of uncertainties in the parameters involved in the calculations, and they offer a useful supplement to conventional analyses. The additional parameters needed for the reliability analyses—standard deviations of the parameters—can be evaluated using the same amount of data and types of correlations that are widely used in geotechnical engineering practice. Example applications to stability and settlement problems illustrate the simplicity and practical usefulness of the method.

Microstructured Waveguide Sensors for Point-of-Care Health Screening

Svetlana S. Konnova, Pavel A. Lepilin, Anastasia A. Zanishevskaya et al.

Biosensor technologies in medicine, as in many other areas, are replacing labor-intensive methods of monitoring human health. This paper presents the results of experimental studies on label-free sensors based on a hollow core microstructured optical waveguide (HC-MOW) for human blood serum analysis. The MOWs with a hollow core of 247.5 µm in diameter were manufactured and used in our work. These parameters allow the hollow core to be filled with high-viscosity solutions due to the capillary properties of the fiber. Calculations of the spectral properties of the HC-MOW fiber were carried out and experimentally confirmed. Twenty-one blood serum samples from volunteers were analyzed using standard photometry (commercial kits) and an experimental biosensor. The obtained transmission spectra were processed by the principal component analysis method and conclusions were drawn about the possibility of using this biosensor in point-of-care medicine. A significant difference was shown between the blood serum of healthy patients and patients with confirmed diagnoses and a long history of cardiovascular system abnormalities. Algorithms for spectra processing using the Origin program are presented.

Phase-resolved prediction of ocean wave field using video prediction

Tatsuya Kaneko, Hidetaka Houtani, Ryota Wada et al.

Short-term phase-resolved ocean wave field prediction is desired for safe and efficient offshore operation. The dynamics of ocean waves are influenced by ambient currents, nonlinearity, and finite depth, which are difficult to characterize analytically. In this paper, we propose the application of video prediction methods by training the model with in-situ wave characteristics. The problem is set as predicting 5 s future waves in the square area within the predictable zone, using the surface elevation time-series data observed in the ∼200 m × ∼200 m range as input. The proposed model was evaluated using publicly available observational ocean wave field data and synthetic wave data compared to the 2D-FFT method based on linear wave theory. As a result, the video prediction showed higher accuracy than 2D-FFT for ocean wave field data. The key to successful wave prediction with observational data could be that the complex wave propagation property in the ocean was learned through in-situ training. Any explicit modeling of physics that can affect the wave propagation property is not necessary for wave prediction with video prediction.

Biological Potential of <i>Tsuga canadensis</i>: A Study on Seed, Cone Essential Oils, and Seed Lipophilic Extract

Anna Wajs-Bonikowska, Ewa Maciejczyk, Łukasz Szoka et al.

This study investigates the essential oil (EO) isolated from the seeds and cones of Canadian hemlock (<i>Tsuga canadensis</i>), highlighting notable differences in their chemical composition and biological activities. The seed EO was uniquely dominated by oxygenated derivatives of monoterpene hydrocarbons, particularly bornyl acetate (40%), whereas the cone EO exhibited higher levels of monoterpene hydrocarbons such as α-pinene (23%), β-pinene (20%), and myrcene (23%). A significant finding was the strong cytotoxic activity of cone EO against melanoma cell lines, with IC50 values as low as 0.104 ± 0.015 μL/mL, compared to the minimal effects of seed EO. Additionally, cone EO demonstrated stronger antimicrobial activity, with lower minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, further highlighting its therapeutic potential. Lipophilic extracts from seeds were characterized by unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic, oleic, and sciadonic acids—specific to conifers) and bioactive molecules with high antioxidant and nutritional potential, such as β-tocopherol, β-sitosterol, and campestrol. These findings underscore the unique chemical composition of <i>T. canadensis</i> seed EO and its lipophilic extract, along with the potent cytotoxic and antimicrobial properties of cone EO, offering insights into their potential applications in natural products for pharmaceutical and therapeutic uses.

The application of cosine similarity measures with Laplacian energy to q-rung orthopair fuzzy graphs in decision-making problems

Mohamed Atheeque A., Sharief Basha S., Nune Pratyusha et al.

Q-rung orthopair fuzzy sets (q-ROFS), which are better than the intuitionistic and Pythagorean fuzzy sets, are a significant tool for expressing ambiguous information. Their key feature is that their ability to represent a larger space of uncertain information is based on the fact that the product of the qth power of the membership degree and the qth power of the degrees of non-membership is equal to or less than 1. Under these circumstances, we train group decision-making problems in the study using q-rung orthopair fuzzy inclination associations. Through the calculation of the standard deviation of one separable q-rung orthopair inclination association to the others and the unclear evidence of q-rung orthopair fuzzy inclination connections, we propose a novel approach to estimate the qualified reputation weights of authority. The “internal” and “impartial” evidence of authority is taken into consideration by this new mindset. Subsequently, we included the weights of authorities into the q-rung orthopair fuzzy inclination relations and used a relative similarity approach to determine the relevance of replacements and the best substitutes. The planned techniques' usefulness and realism are demonstrated by the contrast analysis with additional methods through mathematical demonstrations, both of which show the fuzzy set’s membership degree and non-membership degree, respectively.

Experimental study on the impact of sulfate attack on the performance of shaft lining concrete under sustained compressive load

Guo-qiang Xu, Wei Zhang, Si Chen et al.

To investigate the impact of sulfate corrosion on the performance of shaft lining concrete under sustained compressive loads, this study immersed samples in a 10 % sodium sulfate solution after subjecting to sustained compressive loads of 0.2fcand 0.4fc. The variation in compressive strength, ultrasonic velocity, and dynamic elasticity modulus with corrosion age were examined. The corrosion mechanisms were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer. The impact tendency of concrete was also evaluated. The results indicated that under sustained compressive loads of 0.2fcand 0.4fc, the compressive strength, ultrasonic velocity, and dynamic elasticity modulus are all increased with age, in the order of 0.2fc> 0.4fc>no-load. When exposed to a 10 % sodium sulfate solution under sustained compressive loads, these properties initially increased and then decreased, peaking at 90 days of corrosion age, and the order was 0.2fc> no-load > 0.4fc when the corrosion age was longer than 240 days. The shaft lining concrete exhibited weak impact tendency, with the brittleness index increasing as the corrosion age progressed. The outcome of this work might provide a reference for the further research on the design of shaft lining concrete materials.
