A Defense of the Realism of Time: Analysis and
Critique of McTaggart’s Theory of Non-Realism in
the Metaphysics of Time
Ayoub Afzali, Ali Mahjor
McTaggart’s argument is the most famous argument in contemporary philosophy for the unreality of time. He proposes two models for explaining time: A-series and B-series. The A-series is a model that explains time based on the three concepts of past, present, and future. The B-Series is a model that explains time based on a dual model of the concepts of “earlier” and “later.” McTaggart contends that the B-series fails to explain change, which is a condition for the realization of time, and that the A-series possesses internal contradiction. Consequently, by rejecting the possibility of both models being real, he concludes that time is unreal. This article analyzes and critiques McTaggart’s view, and inspired by the linguistic analysis method of the late Wittgenstein, we show that, first of all, some things cannot be explained solely by a theoretical model. Therefore, time is a multi-level reality based on theoretical reflections and linguistic intuitions. Secondly, the B-series can indeed explain change. Also, the A-series is not contradictory; in this view, the objective aspect of time is explained by the B-series, and the subjective aspect of that is explained by the A-series. Therefore, time is a multi-level reality that cannot be explained by a single conceptual model.
Introduction
The aim of this article, aside from critical discussions, is to defend a specific approach to realism in the metaphysics of time that considers time as a multi-level reality necessitating a multi-level explanation. This approach is partly inspired by the philosophy of linguistic analysis, especially the philosophy of late Wittgenstein, which, instead of giving primacy to a single theory, considers attention to multiple meanings and applications as a way to solve philosophical problems. Unlike the late Wittgenstein, however, this article also focuses on theoretical models in the philosophy of time and does not limit itself to linguistic analysis and conceptual treatment. The innovation of this article lies in 1) presenting an innovative reading of the A-series;2) offering a specific reading of the multi-level explanation regarding the reality of time; and3) combining the method of linguistic analysis with the theory-based method.
Body
McTaggart proposes two conceptual models (A-series and B-series) to explain time. TheB-series is criticized for its inability to demonstrate change, while the realization of time without change is not meaningful. Although the A-series can demonstrate change, it suffers from a self-defeating contradiction. In the A-series, on the one hand, each of the past, present, and future states are non-summable determinations because each event must have one of those states (e.g., the future) to be attributed to that state (e.g., the future), but on the other hand, each of the points attributed to the past, present, or future can simultaneously be attributed to the other three temporal determinations. This contradiction becomes clearer when there is no end point to find the beginning of this chain and the stability of temporal determinations, and it will continue into infinite regression. In our view, McTaggart’s main claims, including the inability of the B-series to explain change, the dependence of the B-series on the A-series, and the self-defeating contradiction in the A-series, are based on a misunderstanding of the A-series and B-series. Attention to linguistic and conceptual analyses leads us to a new understanding of them, as well as the metaphysical gap between the concept of time in these two models and the difference in their characteristics.
Discussion
A careful analysis of the A-series and B-series reveals that, in addition to proving realism, they can be used as two independent and complementary explanatory models. The approach that makes it possible to use two independent models in explaining time is a multi-level explanation of the reality of time. Our first criticism of McTaggart is that both of his proposed models assume the quantitative nature of time, while denying that the two quantitative perceptions of time is not a valid reason to deny the qualitative perception of time (e.g., Heidegger’s view). Secondly, contrary to McTaggart’s claim, the B-series has explanatory power in explaining time independently of the A-series, because each of them belongs to different ontological realms. From this perspective, the B-series represents and explains an epiphenomenal reality. Thirdly, the realization of time in the A-series, which is equivalent to the realization of time in the human mental world, is not conditioned by change. Rather, for the realization of the A-series, merely the flow of mental awareness of the three states (future, present, and past) is sufficient.
Conclusion
In this article, we have gone beyond single-level approaches to the metaphysics of time and have explained the reality of time at two levels: objective and subjective (mental-linguistic). However, the qualitative/existential aspect of time has been omitted due to article limitations. In our opinion, both the A-series and B-series are successful options in explaining the reality of time, although in the B-series, change is a condition for the realization of time; in the A-series, such a condition is not necessary. The A-series explains the subjective aspect of time in the human mental world and their awareness of time, while the B-series elucidates its objective aspect in correspondence with the events of the external world, and hence time has an epiphenomenal reality in relation to objective events.

A Critical Examination of Mullā Sadrā’s Theory of the Correspondence of Existential Realms within the Framework of the Epistemological Correspondence Theory of Truth
Hosein Saadat, Abdolrasoul Kashfi
Mullā Sadrā interprets “correspondence” in the correspondence theory of truth as the identity of quiddity (ʿayniyyat-e māhūwī) between mental existence (wujūd-i dhihnī) and external existence (wujūd-i khārijī) of a known object. However, this view conflicts with his principle of the primacy of existence (aṣālat al-wujūd), which posits that mental and external existences occupy distinct existential ranks, making identical quiddities impossible. To resolve this, Sadrā proposes the theory of correspondence of existential realms (tatābuq-i ʿawālim-i wujūdī), arguing that the quiddity of external existence is identical to that of mental existence, and their correspondence arises from the identity of their higher and specific existences. This article argues that while Sadrā clearly explains the identity of quiddity, his theory of existential correspondence fails to resolve the inconsistency. For true knowledge of an external object, the mental form must distinguish it from other objects in a conditioned (bi sharṭ-i lā) manner, not merely through indeterminate, unconditioned (lā bi sharṭ) knowledge of its qualities. Thus, knowing an object’s qualities abstractly does not equate to knowing the object itself, as distinguishing it requires specific, conditioned knowledge, undermining Sadrā’s resolution of the conflict between his theories.

SpiritRAG: A Q&A System for Religion and Spirituality in the United Nations Archive
Yingqiang Gao, Fabian Winiger, Patrick Montjourides
et al.
Religion and spirituality (R/S) are complex and highly domain-dependent concepts which have long confounded researchers and policymakers. Due to their context-specificity, R/S are difficult to operationalize in conventional archival search strategies, particularly when datasets are very large, poorly accessible, and marked by information noise. As a result, considerable time investments and specialist knowledge is often needed to extract actionable insights related to R/S from general archival sources, increasing reliance on published literature and manual desk reviews. To address this challenge, we present SpiritRAG, an interactive Question Answering (Q&A) system based on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Built using 7,500 United Nations (UN) resolution documents related to R/S in the domains of health and education, SpiritRAG allows researchers and policymakers to conduct complex, context-sensitive database searches of very large datasets using an easily accessible, chat-based web interface. SpiritRAG is lightweight to deploy and leverages both UN documents and user provided documents as source material. A pilot test and evaluation with domain experts on 100 manually composed questions demonstrates the practical value and usefulness of SpiritRAG.
How Deep Is Representational Bias in LLMs? The Cases of Caste and Religion
Agrima Seth, Monojit Choudhary, Sunayana Sitaram
et al.
Representational bias in large language models (LLMs) has predominantly been measured through single-response interactions and has focused on Global North-centric identities like race and gender. We expand on that research by conducting a systematic audit of GPT-4 Turbo to reveal how deeply encoded representational biases are and how they extend to less-explored dimensions of identity. We prompt GPT-4 Turbo to generate over 7,200 stories about significant life events (such as weddings) in India, using prompts designed to encourage diversity to varying extents. Comparing the diversity of religious and caste representation in the outputs against the actual population distribution in India as recorded in census data, we quantify the presence and "stickiness" of representational bias in the LLM for religion and caste. We find that GPT-4 responses consistently overrepresent culturally dominant groups far beyond their statistical representation, despite prompts intended to encourage representational diversity. Our findings also suggest that representational bias in LLMs has a winner-take-all quality that is more biased than the likely distribution bias in their training data, and repeated prompt-based nudges have limited and inconsistent efficacy in dislodging these biases. These results suggest that diversifying training data alone may not be sufficient to correct LLM bias, highlighting the need for more fundamental changes in model development. A One-Dimensional Energy Balance Model Parameterization for the Formation of CO2 Ice on the Surfaces of Eccentric Extrasolar Planets
Vidya Venkatesan, Aomawa L. Shields, Russell Deitrick
et al.
Eccentric planets may spend a significant portion of their orbits at large distances from their host stars, where low temperatures can cause atmospheric CO2 to condense out onto the surface, similar to the polar ice caps on Mars. The radiative effects on the climates of these planets throughout their orbits would depend on the wavelength-dependent albedo of surface CO2 ice that may accumulate at or near apoastron and vary according to the spectral energy distribution of the host star. To explore these possible effects, we incorporated a CO2 ice-albedo parameterization into a one-dimensional energy balance climate model. With the inclusion of this parameterization, our simulations demonstrated that F-dwarf planets require 29% more orbit-averaged flux to thaw out of global water ice cover compared with simulations that solely use a traditional pure water ice-albedo parameterization. When no eccentricity is assumed, and host stars are varied, F-dwarf planets with higher bond albedos relative to their M-dwarf planet counterparts require 30% more orbit-averaged flux to exit a water snowball state. Additionally, the intense heat experienced at periastron aids eccentric planets in exiting a snowball state with a smaller increase in instellation compared with planets on circular orbits; this enables eccentric planets to exhibit warmer conditions along a broad range of instellation. This study emphasizes the significance of incorporating an albedo parameterization for the formation of CO2 ice into climate models to accurately assess the habitability of eccentric planets, as we show that, even at moderate eccentricities, planets with Earth-like atmospheres can reach surface temperatures cold enough for the condensation of CO2 onto their surfaces, as can planets receiving low amounts of instellation on circular orbits.

The Evolution of Commentators' Opinions about the Verses Related to the Divinity and Being the son of God Jesus (pbuh)
Robabeh Ghasemi mobarakeh, Mohammad Mahdi Taghdisi, Seyedeh Fatemah Hosaini Mirsafy
The issue of Christians' belief in the divinity and goodness of Jesus (pbuh) - in the sense that they call this divine prophet God, the son of God, or the son of God - is one of the most important issues that commentators of the Holy Quran have tried to criticize. In this research, we intend to examine the evolution of the Qur'an commentators' opinions in addressing and criticizing this issue and show what changes have been made in the commentators' understanding of this historical concept. The results of the research show that the commentators of the early period only disproved this theory, and the commentators of the middle period, by emphasizing the explanation of the verses and without referring to the Christian religious sources, only limited themselves to the irrationality of this theory, but the commentators of the contemporary period, while carefully examining the sources of Christianity and talking with their scholars, they have tried to show the time and how to create this belief deviation in Christianity and express the reasons for its cancellation in a documented way.

Listening to the Opus Dei Information Office in Navarra and the Basque Country: Good communication practices at the service of the governance of an institution
Inma Juan Pardo
AbstractCommunication is essential for organisations. The interaction of institutions with their publics and their reputation management depend on it. ‘An organisation that does not listen, or listens badly to its stakeholders and publics, will fail in its public communication,’ as Jim Macnamara says. This article deals with the listening work of the Opus Dei Information Office of the Basque Country and Navarra carried out in different phases: initiation, identification of interest groups, open listening, analysis of the findings, conclusions and transmission. It is offered as a good communication practice at the service of government that could be applied, with the necessary adjustments, to other institutions, especially Church communication offices. The text is divided into two parts: in the first, we review some concepts on institutional communication, governance, intangibles, reputation and listening, which serve as a framework; in the second, we summarise the case study, relying on interviews with people who were directly involved in the unfolding of events – Juan Carlos Mújika, the then director of the Office; Jesús Juan, who worked in the Prelature’s delegation; and Juan Manuel Mora, Vice Rector for Communication at the University of Navarra.

Integration of Islamic Religious Values and Javanese Culture in the Development of Pilgrimage Tourism in Ngawonggo, Indonesia
Mahatva Yoga Adi Pradana, Darsono Wisadirana, Muhammad Lukman Hakim
et al.
Spiritual tourism prioritising religious aspects, is one of East Java’s oldest forms of tourism, especially in Malang district. This form of tourism has long developed since combining Islamic and Javanese values. The concept emerged along with the Indonesian halal tourism brand. As a form of contribution to the development of religious tourism, this study seeks to show the existence of traditional relations in aspects of Islamic pilgrimage as a form of tourist behaviour which involves visiting historical tourism in tourist villages. This research uses a qualitative methods with a case study which includes interviews and participatory observation that aims to understand the aspects of pilgrimage in depth. The findings show that tourists visiting spiritual objects of high importance are not unlike Muslims in their behaviour when visiting Mecca - performing tawaf, drinking holy water, giving alms and eating together. However, this is something that attracts tourists to visit. Planning and development are still needed, especially in the flow of rituals that are carried out so as not to eliminate the purpose of developing halal tourism in Indonesia.

Church communication highlights 2022
Diego Contreras
AbstractThe year 2022 will be remembered for the outbreak of war in Ukraine, a conflict that shattered the incipient optimism caused by the gradual disappearance of the Covid pandemic. Alongside the succession of news about the war and the Pope’s appeals for peace, the media echoed other important events in the life of the Church. In these pages we offer a selection of the most significant ones. Obviously, this is a choice based on the author’s criteria, which include the persistence of the news throughout the year.

Multi-Point Detection of the Powerful Gamma Ray Burst GRB221009A Propagation through the Heliosphere on October 9, 2022

et al.
We present the results of processing the effects of the powerful Gamma Ray Burst GRB221009A captured by the charged particle detectors (electrostatic analyzers and solid-state detectors) onboard spacecraft at different points in the heliosphere on October 9, 2022. To follow the GRB221009A propagation through the heliosphere we used the electron and proton flux measurements from solar missions Solar Orbiter and STEREO-A; Earth magnetosphere and the solar wind missions THEMIS and Wind; meteorological satellites POES15, POES19, MetOp3; and MAVEN - a NASA mission orbiting Mars. GRB221009A had a structure of four bursts: less intense Pulse 1 - the triggering impulse - was detected by gamma-ray observatories at 131659 UT (near the Earth); the most intense Pulses 2 and 3 were detected on board all the spacecraft from the list, and Pulse 4 detected in more than 500 s after Pulse 1. Due to their different scientific objectives, the spacecraft, which data was used in this study, were separated by more than 1 AU (Solar Orbiter and MAVEN). This enabled tracking GRB221009A as it was propagating across the heliosphere. STEREO-A was the first to register Pulse 2 and 3 of the GRB, almost 100 seconds before their detection by spacecraft in the vicinity of Earth. MAVEN detected GRB221009A Pulses 2, 3, and 4 at the orbit of Mars about 237 seconds after their detection near Earth. By processing the time delays observed we show that the source location of the GRB221009A was at RA 288.5 degrees, Dec 18.5 degrees (J2000) with an error cone of 2 degrees

Mechanized Analysis of Anselm's Modal Ontological Argument
John Rushby
We use a mechanized verification system, PVS, to examine the argument from Anselm's Proslogion Chapter III, the so-called "Modal Ontological Argument." We consider several published formalizations for the argument and show they are all essentially similar. Furthermore, we show that the argument is trivial once the modal axioms are taken into account. This work is an illustration of computational philosophy and, in addition, shows how these methods can help detect and rectify errors in modal reasoning. This is a minor update with better typesetting and some small addenda to a paper published in the International Journal for Philosophy of Religion, vol. 89, pp. 135--152, April 2021.
The Galactic Chemical Evolution of phosphorus observed with IGRINS
G. Nandakumar, N. Ryde, M. Montelius
et al.
Phosphorus (P) is considered to be one of the key elements for life, making it an important element to look for in the abundance analysis of spectra of stellar systems. Yet, there exists only a handful of spectroscopic studies to estimate the P abundances and investigate its trend across a range of metallicities. We have observed full HK band spectra at a spectral resolving power of R=45,000 with IGRINS instrument. Abundances are determined using SME in combination with 1D MARCS stellar atmosphere models. The investigated sample of stars have reliable stellar parameters estimated using optical FIES spectra (GILD; Jönsson et al. in prep.). In order to determine the P abundances from the 16482.92 Angstrom P line, we take special care of the CO($ν=7-4$) blend. We determine the C, N, O abundances from atomic carbon and a range of non-blended molecular lines (CO, CN, OH) which are aplenty in the H band region of K giant stars, assuring an appropriate modelling of the blending CO($ν=7-4$) line. We present [P/Fe] vs [Fe/H] trend for 38 K giant stars in the metallicity range of -1.2 dex $<$ [Fe/H] $<$ 0.4 dex. We find that our trend matches well with the compiled literature sample of prominently dwarf stars and limited number of giant stars. Our trend is found to be higher by $\sim$ 0.05 - 0.1 dex compared to the theoretical chemical evolution trend in Cescutti et al. 2012 resulting from core collapse supernova (type II) of massive stars with the P yields from Kobayashi et al. (2006) arbitrarily increased by a factor of 2.75. Thus the enhancement factor might need to be $\sim$ 0.05 - 0.1 dex higher to match our trend. We also find an empirically determined primary behaviour for phosphorus. Furthermore, the phosphorus abundance is found to be elevated by $\sim$ 0.6 - 0.9 dex in two metal poor s-enriched stars compared to the theoretical chemical evolution trend.

A Mechanically Assisted Examination of Vacuity and Question Begging in Anselm's Ontological Argument
John Rushby
I use mechanized verification to examine several first- and higher-order formalizations of Anselm's Ontological Argument against the charge of begging the question. I propose three different but related criteria for a premise to beg the question in fully formal proofs and find that one or another applies to all the formalizations examined. I also show that all these formalizations entail variants that are vacuous, in the sense that they apply no interpretation to "than which there is no greater" and are therefore vulnerable to Gaunilo's refutation. My purpose is to demonstrate that mechanized verification provides an effective and reliable technique to perform these analyses; readers may decide whether the forms of question begging and vacuity so identified affect their interest in the Argument or its various formalizations. This version updates the paper that originally appeared as Chapter 13 in "Beyond Faith and Rationality: Essays on Logic, Religion and Philosophy" published by Springer to respond to criticisms by Oppenheimer and Zalta.
Conflicts Between Science and Religion: Epistemology to the Rescue
Moorad Alexanian
Both Albert Einstein and Erwin Schrödinger have defined what science is. Einstein includes not only physics, but also all natural sciences dealing with both organic and inorganic processes in his definition of science. According to Schrödinger, the present scientific worldview is based on the two basic attitudes of comprehensibility and objectivation. On the other hand, the notion of religion is quite equivocal and unless clearly defined will easily lead to all sorts of misunderstandings. Does science, as defined, encompass the whole of reality? More importantly, what is the whole of reality and how do we obtain data for it? The Christian worldview considers a human as body, mind, and spirit (soul), which is consistent with Cartesian ontology of only three elements: matter, mind, and God. Therefore, is it possible to give a precise definition of science showing that the conflicts are actually apparent and not real?
Trends and Characteristics of High-Frequency Type II Bursts Detected by CALLISTO Spectrometers
A. C. Umuhire, J. Uwamahoro, K. Sasikumar Raja
et al.
Solar radio type II bursts serve as early indicators of incoming geo-effective space weather events such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). In order to investigate the origin of high-frequency type II bursts (HF type II bursts), we have identified 51 of them (among 180 type II bursts from SWPC reports) that are observed by ground-based Compound Astronomical Low-cost Low-frequency Instrument for Spectroscopy and Transportable Observatory (CALLISTO) spectrometers and whose upper-frequency cutoff (of either fundamental or harmonic emission) lies in between 150 MHz-450 MHz during 2010-2019. We found that 60% of HF type II bursts, whose upper-frequency cutoff $\geq$ 300 MHz originate from the western longitudes. Further, our study finds a good correlation $\sim $ 0.73 between the average shock speed derived from the radio dynamic spectra and the corresponding speed from CME data. Also, we found that analyzed HF type II bursts are associated with wide and fast CMEs located near the solar disk. In addition, we have analyzed the spatio-temporal characteristics of two of these high-frequency type II bursts and compared the derived from radio observations with those derived from multi-spacecraft CME observations from SOHO/LASCO and STEREO coronagraphs.
"A Virus Has No Religion": Analyzing Islamophobia on Twitter During the COVID-19 Outbreak
Mohit Chandra, Manvith Reddy, Shradha Sehgal
et al.
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted people's lives driving them to act in fear, anxiety, and anger, leading to worldwide racist events in the physical world and online social networks. Though there are works focusing on Sinophobia during the COVID-19 pandemic, less attention has been given to the recent surge in Islamophobia. A large number of positive cases arising out of the religious Tablighi Jamaat gathering has driven people towards forming anti-Muslim communities around hashtags like #coronajihad, #tablighijamaatvirus on Twitter. In addition to the online spaces, the rise in Islamophobia has also resulted in increased hate crimes in the real world. Hence, an investigation is required to create interventions. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first large-scale quantitative study linking Islamophobia with COVID-19. In this paper, we present CoronaBias dataset which focuses on anti-Muslim hate spanning four months, with over 410,990 tweets from 244,229 unique users. We use this dataset to perform longitudinal analysis. We find the relation between the trend on Twitter with the offline events that happened over time, measure the qualitative changes in the context associated with the Muslim community, and perform macro and micro topic analysis to find prevalent topics. We also explore the nature of the content, focusing on the toxicity of the URLs shared within the tweets present in the CoronaBias dataset. Apart from the content-based analysis, we focus on user analysis, revealing that the portrayal of religion as a symbol of patriotism played a crucial role in deciding how the Muslim community was perceived during the pandemic. Through these experiments, we reveal the existence of anti-Muslim rhetoric around COVID-19 in the Indian sub-continent.
