Coronavirus conspiracy suspicions, general vaccine attitudes, trust and coronavirus information source as predictors of vaccine hesitancy among UK residents during the COVID-19 pandemic

D. Allington, Siobhan McAndrew, V. Moxham-Hall et al.

Abstract Background Vaccine hesitancy presents an obstacle to the campaign to control COVID-19. It has previously been found to be associated with youth, female gender, low income, low education, low medical trust, minority ethnic group membership, low perceived risk from COVID-19, use of certain social media platforms and conspiracy beliefs. However, it is unclear which of these predictors might explain variance associated with others. Methods An online survey was conducted with a representative sample of 4343 UK residents, aged 18–75, between 21 November and 21 December 2020. Predictors of vaccine hesitancy were assessed using linear rank-order models. Results Coronavirus vaccine hesitancy is associated with youth, female gender, low income, low education, high informational reliance on social media, low informational reliance on print and broadcast media, membership of other than white ethnic groups, low perceived risk from COVID-19 and low trust in scientists and medics, as well as (to a much lesser extent) low trust in government. Coronavirus conspiracy suspicions and general vaccine attitudes appear uniquely predictive, jointly explaining 35% of variance. Following controls for these variables, effects associated with trust, ethnicity and social media reliance largely or completely disappear, whereas the effect associated with education is reversed. Conclusions Strengthening positive attitudes to vaccination and reducing conspiracy suspicions with regards to the coronavirus may have a positive effect on vaccine uptake, especially among ethnic groups with heightened vaccine hesitancy. However, vaccine hesitancy associated with age and gender does not appear to be explained by other predictor variables tested here.

Modern Advertising of Ukrainian Higher Education Institutions: Ethical-Legal and Philosophical-Communicative Aspects

Вадим Слюсар, Наталія Венцель, Микола Слюсар et al.

The article analyzes current trends in the advertising of Ukrainian higher education institutions (hereinafter HEIs) in the context of the commercialization of education and the digitalization of communication processes. The authors explore the ethical-legal and philosophical-communicative aspects of advertising in HEIs, highlighting the shift from traditional informational messages to branding strategies that incorporate mythologemes and simulacra. These approaches enhance the effectiveness of advertising campaigns but underscore the need for clearly defined regulatory frameworks. The study addresses challenges related to ethical advertising principles, particularly the need to avoid manipulative practices, misinformation, and discriminatory imagery that may distort the social functions of education. Using phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches, case study analysis, and empirical data, the article examines how the advertising of HEIs contributes to shaping their image as intellectual and cultural centers that respond to societal challenges. Special attention is given to the impact of digitalization, especially the transition from print media to official websites and social networks as primary communication channels. The article also emphasizes the social responsibility of HEIs, which involves building a positive image through community partnerships and adapting educational programs to meet societal needs. This provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of both the substantive and formal characteristics of advertising messages in the context of HEI communication. An important aspect of the study is the connection between advertising narratives and the social responsibility of higher education. Given the growing competition among HEIs, advertising becomes not only a tool for disseminating information but also a mechanism for building loyalty, trust, and academic reputation. Under martial law and amid global transformations, university advertising must also serve as a societal guidepost, conveying stability, reliability, and openness to present-day challenges. This highlights the importance of ethical and philosophical analysis of advertising discourse as an integral part of the educational policy of HEIs.

Justification of Technological Conditions for High-Quality Folding and Bonding of Integral Cover Flaps

Петро Олексійович Киричок, Дмитро Олександрович Палюх

The object of the study is the processes of folding and gluing of flaps and edges of integral covers within a single technological cycle of their forming. The purpose of the work is to substantiate the technological conditions for ensuring geometric accuracy and reliable bonding of the structural elements of integral covers based on controlling contact interaction in the folding zone. It has been established that the bonding quality is determined by the accuracy of spatial alignment of the elements, which is formed at the folding stage. For quantitative assessment of geometric quality, linear and angular alignment criteria in the form of deviations Δx and Δφ are proposed, and their permissible ranges are substantiated for different quality requirement levels of integral covers. Based on the analysis of experimental observations and geometric generalization of deviations, typical defects of integral covers are systematized, and their cause-and-effect relationship with dominant contact factors in the folding zone is established. It is shown that most defects are caused by peaks of contact stresses, unstable sliding, and violation of the repeatability of bend formation. The folding process is considered from the standpoint of a differential description of contact interaction, which made it possible to substantiate the influence of the geometry of folding plate profiles and the microgeometric condition of their working surfaces on stress distribution, friction, and elastic recovery of the material. It is shown that the use of profiles with a smooth curvature variation combined with controlled formation of a strengthening microrelief on the working surfaces of the plates ensures stabilization of contact conditions, reduction of peak loads, increased repeatability of folding, and compliance with geometric tolerances of bonding. The practical significance of the obtained results lies in the possibility of using the proposed criteria and recommendations for the design and manufacture of folding plates with enhanced geometric stability, which ensures predictable quality of integral covers in mass production.

A critical discourse analysis of narrative discrepancies in Pakistani news channel headlines

Awais Rubbani, Karizza P. Bravo-Sotelo, Manal

This case study investigates how the same tweet is treated linguistically with different narratives. Taking the case of the tweet of Maryam Nawaz, a Pakistani female politician, we analyze through different linguistic interpretations the selected news channels’ headlines that picked up her tweet on the death of a local journalist, Arshad Sharif. Following earlier studies on critical discourse analysis (CDA) of news headlines, the present study investigated how language is used to portray Maryam’s tweet about Arshad Sharif’s death: (1) how is Maryam Nawaz linguistically represented by Pakistani news channels’ headlines, and (2) how are the news channels’ headlines foregrounded/backgrounded to portray the image of Maryam Nawaz. Using a qualitative approach, we gathered data from 10 news headlines from leading Pakistani news channels and used Fairclough’s three-dimensional model for the qualitative analysis of linguistic choices. We also employed Goffman’s theory to analyze foregrounding and backgrounding of news channels’ headlines. Findings suggest that Maryam Nawaz is portrayed negatively with specific linguistic choices, like ‘apology’, ‘indifference’, ‘to shame humanity’, ‘outrage’, ‘backlash’, and ‘inappropriate tweet’. The analysis also reveals that Maryam Nawaz is foregrounded in most news headlines, while Arshad Sharif’s death is backgrounded, demonstrating the prominence given to Maryam Nawaz and the criticisms against her. Such negative linguistic representations in electronic and print media outlets can shape the portrayal of female politicians in Pakistan and have implications for media representation of female public figures, which can be relevant in contexts where media outlets can reframe narratives using linguistic resources to suit certain agendas.

Mitochondrial replacement in the English-language print media: continuity and change in metaphors and social representations

Brigitte Nerlich, Rusi Jaspal

In May 2023, The Guardian announced that babies had been born through mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT). MRT and its ethical and legal implications have been discussed in the media for over a decade. These discussions have been examined by social scientists and communication scholars. In this article, we seek to determine whether and, if so, how social representations have changed since this announcement. Using thematic analysis and social representations theory, we studied a corpus of 70 English language newspaper articles. Results show three thematic dichotomies: (1) moderation vs. sensationalism; (2) ontologising vs. de-ontologising MRT; and (3) using metaphors for persuasion vs. explanation. The societal concern representation largely dominated reporting around 2015 and the hope and opportunity representation was prominent in current reporting. We argue that the hope representation may facilitate greater patient and public acceptance of MRT but that it may also limit awareness, understanding and discussion of its possible risks and limitations.

Multimaterial Inkjet Printing of Mechanochromic Materials

Muriel Mauron, Lucie Castens Vitanov, César Michaud et al.

Inkjet printing technology achieves the precise deposition of liquid-phase materials via the digitally controlled formation of picoliter-sized droplets. Beyond graphical printing, inkjet printing has been employed for the deposition of separated drops on surfaces or the formation of continuous layers, which allows to construct materials gradients or periodic features that provide enhanced functionalities. Here, we explore the use of multinozzle, drop-on-demand piezoelectric inkjet technology for the manufacturing of mechanochromic materials, i.e., materials that change their color or fluorescence in response to mechanical deformation. To accomplish this, suitable polyurethane polymers of differing hardness grades were tested with a range of organic solvents to formulate low-viscosity, inkjet-printable solutions. Following their rheological characterization, two solutions comprised of "soft" and "hard" polyurethanes were selected for in-depth study. The solutions were imbibed with a mechanochromic additive to yield fluorescent inks, which were either dropcast onto polymeric substrates or printed to form checkerboard patterns of alternating hardness using a lab-built, multimaterial inkjet platform. Fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy were used to identify different hardness grades in the dropcast and printed materials, as well as to monitor the responses of these gradient materials to mechanical deformation. The insights gained in this study are expected to facilitate the development of inkjet-printable, mechanochromic polymer materials for a wide range of applications.

Learning Based Toolpath Planner on Diverse Graphs for 3D Printing

Yuming Huang, Yuhu Guo, Renbo Su et al.

This paper presents a learning based planner for computing optimized 3D printing toolpaths on prescribed graphs, the challenges of which include the varying graph structures on different models and the large scale of nodes & edges on a graph. We adopt an on-the-fly strategy to tackle these challenges, formulating the planner as a Deep Q-Network (DQN) based optimizer to decide the next `best' node to visit. We construct the state spaces by the Local Search Graph (LSG) centered at different nodes on a graph, which is encoded by a carefully designed algorithm so that LSGs in similar configurations can be identified to re-use the earlier learned DQN priors for accelerating the computation of toolpath planning. Our method can cover different 3D printing applications by defining their corresponding reward functions. Toolpath planning problems in wire-frame printing, continuous fiber printing, and metallic printing are selected to demonstrate its generality. The performance of our planner has been verified by testing the resultant toolpaths in physical experiments. By using our planner, wire-frame models with up to 4.2k struts can be successfully printed, up to 93.3% of sharp turns on continuous fiber toolpaths can be avoided, and the thermal distortion in metallic printing can be reduced by 24.9%.

TactIcons: Designing 3D Printed Map Icons for People who are Blind or have Low Vision

Leona Holloway, Matthew Butler, Kim Marriott

Visual icons provide immediate recognition of features on print maps but do not translate well for touch reading by people who are blind or have low vision due to the low fidelity of tactile perception. We explored 3D printed icons as an equivalent to visual icons for tactile maps addressing these problems. We designed over 200 tactile icons (TactIcons) for street and park maps. These were touch tested by blind and sighted people, resulting in a corpus of 33 icons that can be recognised instantly and a further 34 icons that are easily learned. Importantly, this work has informed the creation of detailed guidelines for the design of TactIcons and a practical methodology for touch testing new TactIcons. It is hoped that this work will contribute to the creation of more inclusive, user-friendly tactile maps for people who are blind or have low vision.

Cross-Media Wireless Made Easier: Tuning Media Interfaces with Flexible Metasurfaces

Ruichun Ma, Wenjun Hu

Emerging wireless IoT applications increasingly venture beyond over-the-air communication, such as deep-tissue networking for implantable sensors, air-water communication for ocean monitoring, and soil sensing. These applications face the fundamental challenge of significant power loss due to reflection at media interfaces. We present RF-Mediator, a programmable metasurface system placed at media interfaces to virtually mask the presence of the physical boundary. It is designed as a single-layer metasurface comprising arrays of varactor-based elements. By tuning the bias voltage element-wise, the surface mediates between media on both sides dynamically and beamforms towards the endpoint to boost transmission through the interface, as if no media interface existed. The control algorithm determines the surface configuration by probing the search space efficiently. We fabricate the surface on a thin, flexible substrate, and experiment with several cross-media setups. Extensive evaluation shows that RF-Mediator provides a median power gain of 8 dB for air-to-tissue links and up to 30 dB for cross-media backscatter links.

Bacterial diffusion in disordered media, by forgetting the media

Henry H. Mattingly

We study bacterial diffusion in disordered porous media. Interactions with obstacles, at unknown locations, make this problem challenging. We approach it by abstracting the environment to cell states with memoryless transitions. With this, we derive an effective diffusivity that agrees well with simulations in explicit geometries. The diffusivity is non-monotonic, and we solve the optimal run length. We also find a rescaling that causes all of the theory and simulations to collapse. Our results indicate that a small set of microscopic features captures bacterial diffusion in disordered media.

Integrating Social Media into the Design Process

Morva Saaty, Jaitun V. Patel, Derek Haqq et al.

Social media captures examples of people's behaviors, actions, beliefs, and sentiments. As a result, it can be a valuable source of information and inspiration for HCI research and design. Social media technologies can improve, inform, and strengthen insights to better understand and represent user populations. To understand the position of social media research and analysis in the design process, this paper seeks to highlight shortcomings of using traditional research methods (e.g., interviews, focus groups) that ignore or don't adequately reflect relevant social media, and this paper speculates about the importance and benefits of leveraging social media for establishing context in supplement with these methods. We present examples that guide our thinking and introduce discussion around concerns related to using social media data.
