Retrospective study

Chao Lu, Xueyou Lv, Yiming Lin et al.

AbstractConventional forceps biopsy (CFB) is the most popular way to screen for gastric epithelial neoplasia (GEN) and adenocarcinoma of gastric epithelium. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy between conventional forceps biopsy and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).Four hundred forty-four patients who finally undertook ESD in our hospital were enrolled from Jan 1, 2009 to Sep 1, 2015. We retrospectively assessed the characteristics of pathological results of CFB and ESD.The concordance rate between CFB and ESD specimens was 68.92% (306/444). Men showed a lower concordance rate (63.61% vs 79.33%; P = 0.001) and concordance patients were younger (P = 0.048). In multivariate analysis, men significantly had a lower concordance rate (coefficient −0.730, P = 0.002) and a higher rate of pathological upgrade (coefficient −0.648, P = 0.015). Locations of CFB did not influence the concordance rate statistically. The concordance rate was relatively high in our hospital. According to our analysis, old men plus gastric fundus or antrum of CFB were strongly suggested to perform ESD if precancerous lesions were found. And young women with low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia could select regular follow-up.

Why Do Men Who Have Sex With Men Catfish On Dating Applications?

Pasut Jirapraditkul

<p>Catfishing is defined as when an individual with inauthentic photos attempts to develop an online relationship with another user on digital platforms (Filice et al., 2019). A surge in dating application usage during the COVID-19 global pandemic encouraged users to spend more time on the platforms (Ting and McLachlan, 2022); catfishing has become a prominent phenomenon in the men who have sex with men (MSM) community as users adopted unconventional uses (Rice et al., 2012). This major research paper aims to find the answer to why MSM catfish by analyzing digital media content not older than 10 years and to publish the research results on Tiktok. Body image and being closeted provide insights into catfishers' motives.</p>

Age related semen parameters and ICSI pregnancy outcomes of 8046 men in Turkey over a 9-year period

Khayala Valizade, Hale Bayram, Yaprak Donmez Cakil et al.

The effect of paternal age on fertility remains unclear. This retrospective study aims to examine the impact of male age on semen parameters and the reproductive outcomes of men admitted to an infertility center over a 9-year period. A total of 8046 patients were included in the study. Men were divided into four age groups. The groups were evaluated for semen parameters and reproductive outcome. The 21–30 year group presented lower sperm concentrations in comparison to those aged 31–40 and 41–50, yet shared a similar concentration to those over 50 years of age. Moreover, grades A and B decreased significantly in men aged over 50 years. The highest progressive motility and normozoospermia were observed in the age group 31–40 years while men over 50 years of age had the highest rates of asthenozoospermia and oligoasthenozoospermia. Furthermore, live birth results were reported in 5583 of the patients who underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and were found highest between 31–40 years of age. To our knowledge, this is the largest study in Turkey focusing on male age-related semen parameters and ICSI pregnancy outcomes. The study demonstrates that age is a significant factor for semen quality and live birth.

Metapragmatic reflections of adolescents on gender in ironic interactions

Karina Hess Zimmermann, Gloria Nélida Avecilla-Ramírez, Abryl Angélica Castillo Romo

IntroductionWhile verbal irony is a pragmatic skill that plays a very important role in social interactions, its development has not been sufficiently studied, especially in the context of the Spanish language. This research aims to generate a deeper understanding of the development of irony, specifically among Mexican adolescents. One of the pragmatic aspects identified as an important factor to consider in the comprehension and production of verbal irony is the gender of the participants involved in the communicative interaction. Prior research with adults indicates that ironic statements produced by men are generally associated with positive discursive functions, whereas those made by women are often perceived negatively. This study aims to analyze the metapragmatic reflections of 37 Mexican adolescents aged 12 and 15 years old (20 and 17 participants, respectively, half women) on how the gender of the interlocutors influences the use of irony in various communicative situations.MethodsParticipants were presented with eight written scenarios that concluded with a written ironic statement (in order to minimize the effects of prosody). The scenarios were counterbalanced to account for the type of ironic remark (critical or praise irony), the gender of the ironist, and the gender of the audience. Through a semi- structured oral interview, the adolescents' reflections and the rationale behind their responses were examined.ResultsThe results revealed significant differences in the interpretation of irony based on age, type of statement (criticism or praise), and the gender of the interlocutors, though not with respect to the gender of the audience. Additionally, a discrepancy was observed between the metapragmatic reflections expressed by adolescents regarding ironic statements and their actual interpretation of irony.DiscussionThese findings suggest that during adolescence, individuals develop an increasing capacity to consider factors related to gender roles that influence the pragmatic interpretation of ironic statements.

Precarious work and methodological challenges to study hard-to-reach populations

Rita de Cássia P. Fernandes, Janaína Santos de Siqueira, Matheus F dos Santos et al.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe the methodological challenges and strategies of a web survey on the working conditions and health among delivery workers. METHODS The study population consisted of Brazilian delivery workers operating in the national territory. Procedures include building solid and ongoing collaboration with worker representatives and conducting a four-month data collection from February to May 2022, sharing the link to the online questionnaire on social media such as social networks (Facebook, Instagram) and messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram). RESULTS The recruitment of 41 leaders or influencers of delivery workers increased the dissemination of the study, some of whom participated in the consensual validation of the questionnaire; the production of content for social media for the dissemination of the questionnaire link on social networks and applications, and the in-person dissemination of the study at the delivery workers’ meeting points during the workday played a fundamental role, totaling around 132 hours in 45 shifts. The strategies adopted for data collection with a hybrid approach to dissemination made it possible to carry out the web survey. After four months of the web survey, 564 delivery workers, 543 men and 18 women, responded to the online questionnaire. CONCLUSION The web survey presented methodological strategies to overcome the challenge of reaching workers, including hybrid work, to increase the participation of workers, on whom epidemiological research is still scarce.

Comparison of treatment results of femoral shaft fracture with two methods of intramedullary nail (IMN) and plate

Hasan Hosseini, Sina Heydari, Asma Amiri Domari et al.

Abstract Background Fracture of the femur is one of the most common fractures that, if not stabilized and treated properly, may lead to severe disability, impairment of the individual’s efficiency, and numerous complications. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment results of femoral shaft fracture with two methods intramedullary nail (IMN) and Plate. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, 60 patients with femoral bone fractures were admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Jiroft in 2020 and were treated for at least one year after discharge. They were divided into two treatment groups - Plate fracture fixation (n = 30) and IMN fracture fixation (n = 30). Data were collected using a researcher-made checklist including patient demographics and treatment outcomes. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS-v 26 statistical software and descriptive and inferential statistical tests at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results Patients in the Plate treatment group were generally older (50–60 years) compared to the IMN treatment group (30–40 years), and there were more men than women in both groups. Only 10% of patients in each group developed superficial infections after surgery. There were more cases of deep infections in the Plate group, but it was not statistically significant. The IMN group had fewer cases of malignancy and claudication compared to the Plate group. Patients in the IMN group also returned to functional activities faster than those in the Plate group, which was a statistically significant difference. Conclusion Considering that deep infection, non-union, malunion, claudication, and ability to return to functional activities in the group using nails treated was less than the group treated with plates, the treatment method of femoral fracture using IMN is the preferred treatment method.

An Ecosystemic Approach to Male Grief Response to Perinatal Loss

Fátima Esther De Lima Pinasco , María Carolina Farías Rodríguez

Perinatal death is framed within a social context where it is not explicitly recognized as «the death of a baby». Perinatal loss is a very frequent reality and has a high impact on the family. However, it is a grief that is experienced in great solitude. Ecosystem theory with its ecological perspective understands that human development is influenced by relationships with its environment. Perinatal Psychology seen from an ecosystem approach allows a broad and flexible view. In this sense, there is a lack of empathy regarding the pain that the male father is going through regarding the death of his/her child, which can lead to helplessness and a feeling of marginalization in the face of their experience. Within a patriarchal culture, the concept of paternity is associated with a man’s ability to get pregnant and his ability to be an economic provider. The identity of men is still linked to the construction of masculinity, which is in contrast to reproduction. Faced with loss, the man plays the role of supporting the woman, generating limitations in being able to express her own discomfort. These learn to identify with reason and make an abrupt cut from the bodily and emotional experience. This way of experiencing grief does not allow them to navigate the loss, avoiding connecting with their own sensitivity, which feeds back into the paradigm.

Yuting Tian, Yuting Tian, Qian Zhou et al.

BackgroundThe objective of this meta-analysis was to review clinical trials of the combination of Pycnogenol ® and L-arginine (PAL) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men and to observe the effect of PAL combined therapy on sexual function in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), and we hope to provide more choices of drugs for treating patients with ED.Methods and analysisThe study was constructed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. We searched seven databases from inception to 15 February 2023, for a comprehensive search of clinical trials using relevant keywords. Continuous variables in this meta-analysis were calculated using the mean difference and 95% confidence interval. All relevant statistical analyses were performed using RevMan v. 5.4 software.ResultsThree studies with 184 patients were included in the present meta-analysis. There were no significant differences in the basic characteristics of the included studies. The results of the current meta-analysis showed that there were significant differences in the international index of erectile function scores (erectile domain), intercourse satisfaction scores, orgasmic function scores, overall satisfaction scores, and sexual desire scores between the combination treatment group and the control group. There was no significant difference in improving the testosterone levels between the two groups.ConclusionThese results indicate that the combination of PAL may have a significant effect on improving sexual function in patients with mild to moderate ED. This study will provide clinicians with more options for treating patients with ED. More randomized controlled trials are needed in the future to further demonstrate the effect of combination therapy on sexual function in patients with ED.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/#myprosperoUnique, Identifier: CRD42023411781.

Metodologi Pemahaman Hadis M. Yusuf al-Qaradhawi: Studi Analitis Atas Hadis Partisipasi Wanita Dalam Berpolitik

Wahyuni Nuryatul Choiroh, Munawir Munawir

Sunni scholars view Hadith as a normative source capable of embodying the essence of the Qur'an, considering Hadith's position as the second source of Islamic religious teachings after the Qur'an. The controversy between textual and contextual schools of thought regarding the study of Hadith has existed since the early development of Islam. Even to this day, textualist scholars continue to advocate for their principles. This study aims to uncover Yusuf al-Qaradhawi's thoughts on the methodology of understanding Hadith in his book "Kaifa Nata’amal ma’a al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyah" (How to Interact with the Prophetic Sunnah), enabling scholars of Hadith to understand Hadith properly. In this context, the author raises the issue of women's participation in politics as an implication of the offered methodology. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a library research method. The results of this study indicate that al-Qaradhawi proposes eight basic principles for understanding the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). These principles include understanding Hadith in harmony with the Qur'an, combining several Hadiths on one topic, reconciling conflicting Hadiths, understanding Hadiths in their background, situation, and orientation, distinguishing between the inconsistency of the means and the consistency of the objectives of the Hadith, comparing literal and metaphorical expressions in understanding Hadiths, comparing the unseen with the visible, and validating the terminology of Hadith. The methodological framework proposed by al-Qaradhawi is expected to keep the study of Hadith relevant to the changing times. Regarding the implications and significance of his methodology regarding women's participation in politics through Hadith, it can be concluded that, according to al-Qaradhawi, women have the same rights to participate and engage in politics as men.

ACUTE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT INTERVALS BETWEEN REPEATED SPRINTS ON PERFORMANCE RESPONSES IN AMATEUR FUTSAL ATHLETES

Leandro Sant’Ana, Lucas Muniz Carnevalli, Sérgio Machado et al.

ABSTRACT Objective: Verify the influence of different break times between sprints on the performance of amateur futsal athletes. Methods: 10 individuals, men, amateur futsal athletes (Age: 21.5 ± 1.6; Weight: 72.4 ± 6.88; Height: 1.72 ± 0.05; BMI: 24.3 ± 1.2; Fat%: 13.7 ± 3.3, VO2peak: 49.1 ± 10.5) participated in the study. Individuals were randomly selected to perform sessions with sprints (10 sets 20 m) with different pause times of 15 (S15), 30 (S30) and 60 (S60) seconds. For performance analysis, the speed (km / h) applied to each sprint was used and monitored by a device with a photocell (CEFISE Biotecnologia Esportiva®). Results: There was an interaction between speed and interval time (p = 0.000). For condition S15, a greater reduction in performance was observed (p ≤ 0.05), while for S30 and S60, no significant reduction in performance was observed (p > 0.05). The data for the area under the curve showed a significant difference (p = 0.000), where the interval of 60 s (S60) was longer compared to the values of 30 (S30) (p = 0.000) and 15 s (S15) (p = 0.000). However, there were no significant differences between the 30 and 15 s data (p = 0.248). Conclusion: A shorter time (15 s) interval between repeated sprints can significantly affect performance compared to longer breaks (30 and 60 s), but all the conditions tested here can be positive for the improvement of performance, mainly in sports that demand fast and efficient motor actions such as futsal.

Evaluation of a workplace suicide prevention program in the Australian manufacturing industry: protocol for a cluster-randomised trial of MATES in manufacturing

A. D. LaMontagne, L. L. Cox, C. Lockwood et al.

Abstract Males are at higher risk of death by suicide than females in Australia, and among men, blue-collar males are at higher risk compared to other working males. In response, MATES in Construction developed a workplace suicide prevention program for the construction sector in 2007 that has been widely implemented in Australia. In the current project, this program is being adapted and trialled in the manufacturing sector. The common aims of MATES programs are to improve suicide prevention literacy, help-seeking intentions, and helping behaviours. The program will be evaluated using a cluster randomised-controlled trial design with waitlist controls across up to 12 manufacturing worksites in Australia. We hypothesise that after 8 months of the MATES in Manufacturing program, there will be significantly greater improvements in help-seeking intentions (primary outcome) compared to waitlist controls. The project is led by Deakin University in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, and in partnership with MATES in Construction and a joint labour-management Steering Group. Trial registration: The trial was registered retrospectively with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry on 25 January 2022 (ACTRN12622000122752). Protocol version: 2.0, November 2022.
