This paper explores the use of rhetorical figures in six 19th-century English manuals devoted to logic, rhetoric, elocution, style, and composition. These handbooks mainly contain an instructive text-type, aiming to teach students various aspects of English composition, such as the elements of writing and parts of speech, among other contents. However, some of these works incorporate rhetorical figures as tools to enhance persuasion. Using a qualitative approach, the analysis identifies three main categories of figures: tropes, figures of speech (or schemes), and figures of thought. The examples studied reveal that the authors blend the expository style typical of traditional grammars with rhetorical figures designed to engage the audience through their persuasive and expressive functions. Future research will expand the comparison of the use of rhetorical arguments and figures in a broader range of grammars.
This article examines the role of dialogical negation (DN) in contemporary French-language scientific discourse on cosmopolitanism and global citizenship, two notions that carry a heavy discursive memory but are still exploited in the humanities. Based on the conception of DN as an arena of asymmetrical opposition of discourses, the study shows how DN contributes to delimiting the zones of the (un)speakable in academic texts. The article stresses that DN acts both as an indicator of the evolution of discursive norms and as a tool for it by allowing a form of “distant recognition” of the arguments that speakers are unable to carry, for a variety of reasons. The article also contributes to the study of the internal structure of the ND, by distinguishing the “single” attribution of the utterance subject to negation from the “double” attribution.

The body is an essential component of tourism. How do travel guides talk about it? How are the tourists’ bodies presented, represented, evoked if not suggested in these books? What is said about them but also, what is silenced? This paper aims to bring some answers to these questions by using a semio-discursive analysis of short trip travel guides to New York. It shows the importance of the reader’s body in tourism, and qualifies the traveler's body by distinguishing between the body of the senses and the body of movement in order to study the relationship that links the two.

The digital discursive worlds opened by the social web have enabled the rapid development of militant discourses exploiting the reticularity of digital spaces and their relational capacity. After a description of the current native digital usages of feminist activists and their historical genesis, this paper examines two phenomena characterizing the contemporary feminist discourse: the deployment, in feminist blogs and social networks, of web native and specific discursive forms of resignification of aggressive or insulting content towards women ; the use of technographics, that is to say composite productions inseparably assembling image and text (Two examples are developed here: the "We can do it!" meme and feminist bingo, a list of anti-feminist arguments inscribed on an online grid similar to that of the famous popular game).
This article examines representations of mental health in young adult (YA) litearature, taking up Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999) as its case study. Paying attention to the affordances of the genre of “teen sick-lit,” I connect such YA literature to the broader field of narrative medicine and consider what can be gained from this relationship. After a careful analysis of Chbosky’s novel, I conclude with a set of criteria that serve as markers of YA texts that productively convey mental health experiences. Although my focus here is on mental illness representations, my criteria and textual analysis can be extended to narratives that focus on other illness and diseases, as well.

This paper focuses on the issue of the researcher’s attitude to his object (in particular, on the possibility of adopting a critical stance). This question concerns the whole realm of social sciences; here, it is tackled in the light of the author’s experience in argumentation studies. She distinguishes three perspectives (descriptive positioning, normative positioning, militant positioning) and compares two analyses she produced of some political discourse. These analyses obey different logics (an epistemic and a political one), and display contrasting discursive and enunciative characteristics. While admitting that caring for critical activism is legitimate, the author concludes to the necessity of acknowledging and maintaining the split between what falls under science and what falls under politics in argumentation studies.

In the first part of this paper (Talia dixit 5, 2010, 1-24), we analysed the general features of those passages in which Livy used laughter as a main or underlying theme, on the basis of a series of terms (risus /ridere; inridere/risus // arridere) whose application could allow us to infer the general concept of this particular emotion and gesture in AVC. Once this aspect has been examined, the main goal of this paper is not only the revision of those characteristics concerning this primary “emotion” within the context of the author’s work itself, but also the comprehensive study of such texts in order to highlight the way in which Livy set both the situation and the characters, creating a certain dramatic actio from which his historiographical and literary project benefitted. Only such an analysis helps us observe the rich spectrum of nuances used by the Paduan historian. Thus, we have intended to show in this paper how Livy obtained new effects by modifying and applying rhetorical theory; how he managed to make some of his characters singularly remembered by hearers or readers thanks to a selection of topics which fitted each of his particular purposes; and finally, how he was able to relate passages in different books and contexts through specific formulas that evoked in the recipient of his work the echo and image sought. Therefore, this paper will show a number of nuances higher than previously expected, since against presumptions, the encomium (praise) in Rome still generated lights and shadows.
Rhetoric and composition is an academic discipline that informs all other fields in teaching students how to communicate their ideas and construct their arguments. It has grown dramatically to become a cornerstone of many undergraduate courses and curricula, and it is a particularly dynamic field for scholarly research. This book offers an accessible introduction to teaching and studying rhetoric and composition. By combining the history of rhetoric, explorations of its underlying theories, and a survey of current research (with practical examples and advice), Steven Lynn offers a solid foundation for further study in the field. Readers will find useful information on how students have been taught to invent and organize materials, to express themselves correctly and effectively, and how the ancient study of memory and delivery illuminates discourse and pedagogy today. This concise book thus provides a starting point for learning about the discipline that engages writing, thinking, and argument.
