'A Good Figure Illuminates the Page'. Rhetorical Figures as Persuasive Devices in 19th-century Grammars
Abstrak
This paper explores the use of rhetorical figures in six 19th-century English manuals devoted to logic, rhetoric, elocution, style, and composition. These handbooks mainly contain an instructive text-type, aiming to teach students various aspects of English composition, such as the elements of writing and parts of speech, among other contents. However, some of these works incorporate rhetorical figures as tools to enhance persuasion. Using a qualitative approach, the analysis identifies three main categories of figures: tropes, figures of speech (or schemes), and figures of thought. The examples studied reveal that the authors blend the expository style typical of traditional grammars with rhetorical figures designed to engage the audience through their persuasive and expressive functions. Future research will expand the comparison of the use of rhetorical arguments and figures in a broader range of grammars.
