Custom Keep-Alive Cache Policies

Sushirdeep Narayana, Ian A. Kash

We study the market design of keep-alive caching policies applicable in serverless computing. Prior work has assumed that the cost of a cache miss (cold start) is uniform across all customer applications. However, the cost of a cache miss depends on the customer's application. We investigate the market design where the customers submit a bid for their cost of a cache miss. We design a cache allocation policy based on online learning from a mixture of fixed allocation experts. We show that our custom cache allocation policy is asymptotically efficient and monotonically non-increasing with respect to the submitted bid. We examine two ways of charging customers to achieve good incentives. In the first payment scheme the customers are charged based on Myerson's theory, whereas in the second payment scheme the customers are charged their externality. We show via a mix of simulations and theory that both schemes have desirable revenue and incentive properties.

Andreiza Oliveira Lemos, Marcia Arruda Franco

Information Asymmetry in Queues with Strategic Customers

Shunan Zheng, John Hasenbein

This paper studies information asymmetry in an unobservable single-server queueing system. While system managers have knowledge of the true arrival rate, customers may lack this information and instead form arbitrary beliefs. We propose a three-tier hierarchy of information asymmetry with increasing levels of information disclosure:customers keep private beliefs, customers are aware of the beliefs of others, and customers know the true arrival rate. Within this framework, the effects of the belief distribution, which is assumed to be general with minimal restrictions, are analyzed in terms of equilibrium joining probabilities, revenue, and social welfare. Furthermore, strategies for information disclosure are proposed for system managers to regulate the queue.

Customer Analytics using Surveillance Video

Earnest Paul Ijjina, Aniruddha Srinivas Joshi, Goutham Kanahasabai et al.

The analysis of sales information, is a vital step in designing an effective marketing strategy. This work proposes a novel approach to analyse the shopping behaviour of customers to identify their purchase patterns. An extended version of the Multi-Cluster Overlapping k-Means Extension (MCOKE) algorithm with weighted k-Means algorithm is utilized to map customers to the garments of interest. The age & gender traits of the customer; the time spent and the expressions exhibited while selecting garments for purchase, are utilized to associate a customer or a group of customers to a garments they are interested in. Such study on the customer base of a retail business, may help in inferring the products of interest of their consumers, and enable them in developing effective business strategies, thus ensuring customer satisfaction, loyalty, increased sales and profits.

SMRABooth: Subject and Motion Representation Alignment for Customized Video Generation

Xuancheng Xu, Yaning Li, Sisi You et al.

Customized video generation aims to produce videos that faithfully preserve the subject's appearance from reference images while maintaining temporally consistent motion from reference videos. Existing methods struggle to ensure both subject appearance similarity and motion pattern consistency due to the lack of object-level guidance for subject and motion. To address this, we propose SMRABooth, which leverages the self-supervised encoder and optical flow encoder to provide object-level subject and motion representations. These representations are aligned with the model during the LoRA fine-tuning process. Our approach is structured in three core stages: (1) We exploit subject representations via a self-supervised encoder to guide subject alignment, enabling the model to capture overall structure of subject and enhance high-level semantic consistency. (2) We utilize motion representations from an optical flow encoder to capture structurally coherent and object-level motion trajectories independent of appearance. (3) We propose a subject-motion association decoupling strategy that applies sparse LoRAs injection across both locations and timing, effectively reducing interference between subject and motion LoRAs. Extensive experiments show that SMRABooth excels in subject and motion customization, maintaining consistent subject appearance and motion patterns, proving its effectiveness in controllable text-to-video generation.

GPT-Connect: Interaction between Text-Driven Human Motion Generator and 3D Scenes in a Training-free Manner

Haoxuan Qu, Ziyan Guo, Jun Liu

Recently, while text-driven human motion generation has received massive research attention, most existing text-driven motion generators are generally only designed to generate motion sequences in a blank background. While this is the case, in practice, human beings naturally perform their motions in 3D scenes, rather than in a blank background. Considering this, we here aim to perform scene-aware text-drive motion generation instead. Yet, intuitively training a separate scene-aware motion generator in a supervised way can require a large amount of motion samples to be troublesomely collected and annotated in a large scale of different 3D scenes. To handle this task rather in a relatively convenient manner, in this paper, we propose a novel GPT-connect framework. In GPT-connect, we enable scene-aware motion sequences to be generated directly utilizing the existing blank-background human motion generator, via leveraging ChatGPT to connect the existing motion generator with the 3D scene in a totally training-free manner. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy and generalizability of our proposed framework.

LogoSticker: Inserting Logos into Diffusion Models for Customized Generation

Mingkang Zhu, Xi Chen, Zhongdao Wang et al.

Recent advances in text-to-image model customization have underscored the importance of integrating new concepts with a few examples. Yet, these progresses are largely confined to widely recognized subjects, which can be learned with relative ease through models' adequate shared prior knowledge. In contrast, logos, characterized by unique patterns and textual elements, are hard to establish shared knowledge within diffusion models, thus presenting a unique challenge. To bridge this gap, we introduce the task of logo insertion. Our goal is to insert logo identities into diffusion models and enable their seamless synthesis in varied contexts. We present a novel two-phase pipeline LogoSticker to tackle this task. First, we propose the actor-critic relation pre-training algorithm, which addresses the nontrivial gaps in models' understanding of the potential spatial positioning of logos and interactions with other objects. Second, we propose a decoupled identity learning algorithm, which enables precise localization and identity extraction of logos. LogoSticker can generate logos accurately and harmoniously in diverse contexts. We comprehensively validate the effectiveness of LogoSticker over customization methods and large models such as DALLE~3. \href{https://mingkangz.github.io/logosticker}{Project page}.

Dimension Reduction of Generalized ASD Instantons

Dylan Galt, Langte Ma

We study generalized anti-self-dual instantons defined over Riemannian manifolds equipped with a parallel codimension-$4$ differential form. In particular, for product Riemannian manifolds possessing such a form, we study dimension reduction phenomena, finding a topological criterion for bundles which, when satisfied, allows for a complete characterization of dimension reduction for the corresponding moduli space of generalized ASD instantons. By establishing an integrability result for families of connections, we then deduce explicit descriptions for these moduli spaces, including those of Hermitian Yang--Mills connections, $G_2$-, and $\Spin(7)$-instantons. When one factor in the product is a $4$-manifold, we establish well-behaved compactifications for these moduli spaces.

Finding Lookalike Customers for E-Commerce Marketing

Yang Peng, Changzheng Liu, Wei Shen

Customer-centric marketing campaigns generate a large portion of e-commerce website traffic for Walmart. As the scale of customer data grows larger, expanding the marketing audience to reach more customers is becoming more critical for e-commerce companies to drive business growth and bring more value to customers. In this paper, we present a scalable and efficient system to expand targeted audience of marketing campaigns, which can handle hundreds of millions of customers. We use a deep learning based embedding model to represent customers and an approximate nearest neighbor search method to quickly find lookalike customers of interest. The model can deal with various business interests by constructing interpretable and meaningful customer similarity metrics. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate the great performance of our system and customer embedding model.

The historical fiction of Eliana Alves Cruz: necropower, violence, coloniality of the body, and infectious diseases

Francis Williams Brito da Conceição, Renan Cabral Paulino

In this article, we aim to analyze the representations of necropower, violence, coloniality of the body, and infectious diseases (such as cholera, yellow fever, smallpox and maculo), recurrent in the process of enslavement of black people. We will investigate such themes by studying the historical fiction novels Água de barrela (2018), Crime do cais do Valongo (2018a), and Nada digo de ti, que em ti não Veja (2020), written by Eliana Alves Cruz. Therefore, starting from the discussions on the various forms of coloniality, violence, and barbarism evidenced in theorists such as Agamben (2002), Bento (2018), Césaire (2020), Dalcastagnè (2008), Lugones (2019), among others, we will observe the ways in which capitalism, European colonization and modern slavery, using necropolitics, led subalternized bodies to death through normalization and regulation, by denying to these bodies basic conditions of existence, such as food, hygiene, decent work, healthcare and rest. By the end of the research, we discovered that the novels problematize and denounce the colonial wound that slavery inflicted on black people, placing them in inhumane situations both of displacement, and in the environments of exploitation.

Core and Periphery as Closed-System Precepts for Engineering General Intelligence

Tyler Cody, Niloofar Shadab, Alejandro Salado et al.

Engineering methods are centered around traditional notions of decomposition and recomposition that rely on partitioning the inputs and outputs of components to allow for component-level properties to hold after their composition. In artificial intelligence (AI), however, systems are often expected to influence their environments, and, by way of their environments, to influence themselves. Thus, it is unclear if an AI system's inputs will be independent of its outputs, and, therefore, if AI systems can be treated as traditional components. This paper posits that engineering general intelligence requires new general systems precepts, termed the core and periphery, and explores their theoretical uses. The new precepts are elaborated using abstract systems theory and the Law of Requisite Variety. By using the presented material, engineers can better understand the general character of regulating the outcomes of AI to achieve stakeholder needs and how the general systems nature of embodiment challenges traditional engineering practice.

LUH AYU MANIK MAS SEBAGAI REPRESENTASI SUPERHERO PEREMPUAN BALI DALAM KOMIK

Hanifah Puji Utami, Aquarini Priyatna, Tisna Prabasmoro

This research is motivated by two reasons, namely the lack of the presence of characters with Indonesian identities and the marginalization of female characters in superhero comics. One of the comics that is quite representative of presenting Indonesia's cultural traditions and local wisdom is Luh Ayu Manik Mas, which contains the Balinese culture. This paper discusses how Luh Ayu Manik Mas has represented the Balinese women through her character as a superhero. The research is carried out using the content analysis method on the four comic editions of Luh Ayu Manik Mas.  The results of this study have shown that Luh Ayu Manik Mas was designed to appear to be a manifestation of local identities, such as a source of strength from the Tri Datu bracelet, and the belief in the Tri Hita Karana. Tri Datu is believed to be the source of life force and Tri Hita Karana is the principle of life that ensures harmony in every aspect of life. Religion and culture are two different things. Luh Ayu Manik Mas, who represents the figure of a Balinese female superhero who is glorified by the teachings of Hinduism as the dominant religion in Bali, is in contrast to Balinese culture which is still subject to the patriarchal system.

WACANA KEKUASAAN DALAM UPACARA SIRAMAN DAN NGALUNGSUR GENI DI DESA DANGIANG GARUT

Ani Rostiyati

The research aims to reveal how the power discourse works through Siraman and Ngalungsur Geni ceremonies. The power discourse can be traced through the relationship between traditional leaders (kuncen and ancestors) and the people of Dangiang Village. The study uses descriptive explanatory methods and interpretative qualitative data analysis techniques. The researcher first raises the phenomenon to be interpreted with Foucault's theory of positive and non-repressive constructed power. The data used are the results of in-depth interviews with informants, observations during the ceremonies, photos, and literature study. The research reveals that power during Siraman and Ngalungsur Geni ceremonies has been constructed dynamically, positively, and unrepressively. The power centered on traditional leader ‘kuncen’ is even distributed to all citizens participating in the ceremonies. The distribution of power is reflected when all ceremony participants can feel both the blessings of the prayers offered by the ‘kuncen’ and the water used for washing the heirlooms belonging to the ancestors of Dangiang Village.

Generalized SU(2) Proca theory reconstructed and beyond

Alexander Gallego Cadavid, Yeinzon Rodriguez, L. Gabriel Gomez

As a modified gravity theory that introduces new gravitational degrees of freedom, the generalized SU(2) Proca theory (GSU2P for short) is the non-Abelian version of the well-known generalized Proca theory where the action is invariant under global transformations of the SU(2) group. This theory was formulated for the first time in Phys. Rev. D 94 (2016) 084041, having implemented the required primary constraint-enforcing relation to make the Lagrangian degenerate and remove one degree of freedom from the vector field in accordance with the irreducible representations of the Poincaré group. It was later shown in Phys. Rev. D 101 (2020) 045008, ibid 045009, that a secondary constraint-enforcing relation, which trivializes for the generalized Proca theory but not for the SU(2) version, was needed to close the constraint algebra. It is the purpose of this paper to implement this secondary constraint-enforcing relation in GSU2P and to make the construction of the theory more transparent. Since several terms in the Lagrangian were dismissed in Phys. Rev. D 94 (2016) 084041 via their equivalence to other terms through total derivatives, not all of the latter satisfying the secondary constraint-enforcing relation, the work was not so simple as directly applying this relation to the resultant Lagrangian pieces of the old theory. Thus, we were motivated to reconstruct the theory from scratch. In the process, we found the beyond GSU2P.

Understanding the Impact of Customer Reviews on Hotel Rating: An Empirical Research

J. Ahmad, H. Sami Ullah, S. Aslam

The ascent of the Internet has caused numerous adjustments in our lives. The Internet has radically changed the manner in which we carry on with our lives, the manner in which we spend our occasions, how we speak with one another day by day, and how we buy items. The development of the Internet among users has created content on the Internet by sources, for example, web-based life, reviews site, online journals, item fan page and some more. This has a lead on to another method for arranging an occasion or searching for a reasonable hotel to remain. Thus, hotel review sites have turned into a famous stage for visitors to share their experiences, reviews, and suggestions on hotels, which they have visited. In Europe, the hotel business has been a standout amongst the most vital monetary developments of the nation. The essential objective of a hotel is to satisfy the customers, to have the capacity to give a high caliber of administration and give them a vital affair while remaining at the hotel. The motivation behind this examination is to comprehend and recognize the scope of elements, which may add as per the general inclination of customers and in addition through their reviews to decide the measures of customers' desires. Information was gathered from online review sites, for example, Booking.com. Text analytics is utilized to analyze the contents gathered.

Cosmological Constant $Λ$ vs. Massive Gravitons: A Case Study in General Relativity Exceptionalism vs. Particle Physics Egalitarianism

J. Brian Pitts

The renaissance of General Relativity witnessed considerable progress regarding both understanding and justifying Einstein's equations. Both general relativists and historians of the subject tend to share a view, General Relativity exceptionalism. But does some of the renaissance progress in understanding and justifying Einstein's equations owe something to particle physics egalitarianism? If so, how should the historiography of gravitation and Einstein's equations reflect that fact? The idea of a graviton mass has a 19th century Newtonian pre-history in Neumann's and Seeliger's long-distance modification of gravity, which (especially for Neumann) altered Poisson's equation to give a potential $e^{-mr}/r$ for a point mass, improving convergence for homogeneous matter. Einstein reinvented the idea before introducing his faulty analogy with $Λ$. This confusion was first critiqued by Heckmann in the 1940s (without effect) and by Trautman, DeWitt, Treder, Rindler, and Freund et al. in the 1960s, and especially more recently by Schücking, but it has misled North, Jammer, Pais, Kerszberg, the Einstein Papers, and Kragh. The error is difficult to catch if one has an aversion to perturbative thinking, but difficult to make if one thinks along the lines of particle physics. The $Λ$-graviton mass confusion not only distorted the interpretation of Einstein's theory, but also obscured a potentially serious particle physics-motivated rivalry (massless vs. massive spin 2). How could one entertain massive spin 2 gravity if $Λ$ is thought already analogous to the Neumann-Seeliger scalar theory? Historiography, like physics, is best served by overcoming the divide between the two views of gravitation.

Generating High-Resolution Fashion Model Images Wearing Custom Outfits

Gökhan Yildirim, Nikolay Jetchev, Roland Vollgraf et al.

Visualizing an outfit is an essential part of shopping for clothes. Due to the combinatorial aspect of combining fashion articles, the available images are limited to a pre-determined set of outfits. In this paper, we broaden these visualizations by generating high-resolution images of fashion models wearing a custom outfit under an input body pose. We show that our approach can not only transfer the style and the pose of one generated outfit to another, but also create realistic images of human bodies and garments.

Customer Sharing in Economic Networks with Costs

Bin Li, Dong Hao, Dengji Zhao et al.

In an economic market, sellers, infomediaries and customers constitute an economic network. Each seller has her own customer group and the seller's private customers are unobservable to other sellers. Therefore, a seller can only sell commodities among her own customers unless other sellers or infomediaries share her sale information to their customer groups. However, a seller is not incentivized to share others' sale information by default, which leads to inefficient resource allocation and limited revenue for the sale. To tackle this problem, we develop a novel mechanism called customer sharing mechanism (CSM) which incentivizes all sellers to share each other's sale information to their private customer groups. Furthermore, CSM also incentivizes all customers to truthfully participate in the sale. In the end, CSM not only allocates the commodities efficiently but also optimizes the seller's revenue.

Nonclassical states that generate zero entanglement with a beam splitter

Aaron Z. Goldberg, Daniel F. V. James

Beam splitters are routinely used for generating entanglement. Their entangling properties have been studied extensively, with nonclassicality of the input states a prerequisite for entanglement at the output. Here we quantify the amount of entanglement generated by weakly-reflecting beam splitters, and look for nonclassical states that are not entangled by general beam splitters. We find that inputting highly nonclassical combinations of unpolarized states that are squeezed and displaced onto a beam splitter can still yield separable output states. This result is crucial for understanding the generation of modal entanglement by beam splitters.
