Exploring the Human-Centered Value of Liberal Arts Education in the Future Educational Paradigm of Education 5.0

YeonKyung Seol

Education 5.0, proposed as a paradigm for future education, has emerged against the backdrop of social and educational changes driven by the proliferation of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT). It begins with the need to move beyond technology-centered efficiency and to reestablish the values of humanity and community. Education 5.0 does not regard advanced technologies as mere tools of efficiency but reinterprets them as instruments for holistic human development and social well-being, thereby finding resonance with the ideals of humanistic education. This study explores how liberal arts education, by aligning with the core values of Education 5.0—human-centeredness, creativity, community orientation, and well-being—can remain a vital domain for fostering inner reflection and critical thinking in the digital age. Through this perspective, the study theoretically examines the philosophical and pedagogical roles of liberal arts education and its practical potential within a technology-driven society. Furthermore, it argues that liberal arts education is not a supplementary component but a humanistic foundation that redefines the sustainability of future society and the very purpose of education through the balance between technology and humanity, and between individuals and communities.

Case Study on the Development and Operation of the Online Liberal Arts Class ‘Humanities and Emotional Intelligence’

GeunHye Kim

The purpose of this study is to analyze the development and cases of the ‘Humanities Arts and Emotional Intelligence’ class, which is a liberal arts course opened as an online class, and to suggest future improvement plans. The results were analyzed by conducting a survey of 115 students who took the ‘Humanities Arts and Emotional Intelligence’ course in the first semester of 2024. As a result of the study, it was found that the application of the discussion and teaching method to the assignments of the class was appropriate to cultivate the self-management skills of the learners. The conclusions based on these results are as follows. First, by reinforcing the research on the results of the satisfaction survey, it is necessary to conduct a satisfaction survey of learners before the 15th week of class, during the middle week of class, and after the 15th week of class to reflect the learner's needs in the class content in real time. Second, it is necessary to reinforce the interaction between instructors and learners in an online classroom environment, and to develop and apply a method that enables efficient discussion. Third, although it is an online method, it is necessary to develop a class that can efficiently achieve the goals of the humanities and arts liberal arts curriculum by increasing a vivid sense of reality through special lectures invited by experts for an aesthetic experience. Therefore, this study provided an analysis of the effectiveness of online liberal arts classes and developed class management cases, explored class feasibility that reflects learners' needs in university online classes, and presented implications for the development of online interaction classes tailored to learners. It also aims to lay the groundwork for the development of various humanities and arts liberal arts subjects in the future by presenting a new model in university humanities and arts liberal arts education.

The scientific value of Armenian written manuscripts

Bibigul Zhiyembay, Lyazat Meirambekova, Gulbakram Zhiyembayeva et al.

Language plays an important role in the development of any state because it evolves in direct contact with people's thinking, history, culture, and worldview. When studying the works of foreign and domestic scientists and classifying the Middle Ages heritage by linguistic features, it can clearly be seen that Turkic written manuscripts in different periods were written in different alphabets, such as runic, Uyghur, Manichaean, Brahma, Arabic, Latin, Armenian, Chagatai, and Cyrillic. Based on the use of Armenian graphics, it has also been established that in the Middle Ages, the heritage of Turkic peoples, including the Qypchaks, was written in a variety of genres and has survived to this day in written manuscripts. The study of Armenian writing in the Qypchak language is especially important in today's Kazakhstani social life. We seek the origins of the Kazakh language and nation in the Qypchak community which emerged in the ancient Turkic period and flourished in the Middle Turkic period. Historical and linguistic works written about the history, language, and culture of the Qypchak community, which ruled the territory from Central Europe to Northern China in the Middle Ages, have demonstrated that the study of the Qypchak people who lived in the Middle Ages is still relevant in modern science. This field studies the history, language, ethnography, culture, and other aspects of the steppe nomadic civilization. Moreover, it aims to thoroughly investigate its aspects, compare the origins and roots of ethnic groups of Qypchak descent to their current condition, and demonstrate traces of historical continuity. The German scientist Adalbert Merx’s work «Türkische Sprichwörter» (Turkish proverbs) written in 1893 and stored in the Bayerische Staats Bibliothek Muenchen library is taken as the object of research. Moreover, the proverbs in the manuscript language are read directly from the Armenian script; the relevance and scientific value of the topic is reported in the given article.

Cooperation, responsibility, discipline, hygiene, and nutrition: transforming Japan’s school lunch program in the 1960s

Nathan Hopson

This is a case study of Japan’s school lunch program (kyūshoku) in the long 1960s. Using previously unexamined archival materials, I present concrete evidence for the ideological and practical transformation of kyūshoku during those years. I argue that with basic nutrition essentially assured after 1958, hygiene, discipline, mutual responsibility, and other aspects of social learning were increasingly prioritized over the original goal of improving school attendance and performance. Put differently, kyūshoku’s functions shifted―in line with Maslow’s needs hierarchy―from physiological and safety needs to social needs, a development common among successful social programs. As codified since the mid-1950s, the program is a cornerstone of Japanese compulsory education with a dual mandate to nurture healthy, responsible citizens. Schools therefore emphasize “proper” dietary habits on the one hand and sociability, cooperation, gratitude, etc., on the other. Through structured, unified, participatory daily rituals including serving and cleanup, children learn hygiene, teamwork, responsibility, and more. Embodied knowledge from collective experiences of discipline become part of children’s habitus and values. These aspects of kyūshoku suggest the need for a nuanced vision of the role of discipline and technologies of the self in educational and childrearing spaces.

Innovation Plan of Liberal Arts Education for the Cultivation of Future Convergence Talent

Mi Young Ahn

In this article, we looked at what changes liberal arts education should seek to cultivate future convergent talents. If major education performs the function of problem-solving, liberal arts education should be able to diagnose problems in our lives and cultivate basic academic and academic skills that are the basis for problem-solving. In order to cultivate future convergent talents, liberal arts education at universities should seek the following changes.</br>First, a convergence liberal arts curriculum should be designed. It is necessary to design and operate a thematic convergence curriculum that fits the goals of each university by utilizing the various infrastructure of the liberal arts curriculum.</br>Second, it is necessary to seek changes in the operation of liberal arts subjects through the identity of liberal arts education. Liberal arts and liberal arts education are about cultivating both knowledge and practice. Based on the performance of liberal arts education, changes should be made to the instructors in charge of liberal arts education, teaching and learning, educational evaluation, lecture size, and lecture evaluation.</br>Third, support from the Ministry of Education is needed. Liberal arts education consists of common basic studies with liberal arts ranging from humanities, society and nature. If students are compared to one tree, support for liberal arts (basic studies), which are the basis of student growth, is needed in the entire structure of ‘root-culture’, ‘flower-major’, and ‘fruit-self-achievement’ (employment, etc.).</br>Universities must bridge the gap between knowing and living. In order for universities to perform the function of fostering future convergent talents, majors and liberal arts must coexist. It is important to solve a problem, but you must be able to diagnose the problem beforehand, and the foundation for solving the problem must be solid. Liberal arts education should design a convergence curriculum to cultivate future convergent talents and operate the curriculum in accordance with the identity of liberal arts education. In order to successfully carry this out, the support of the Ministry of Education is urgently needed.

Development of a Balanced Liberal Arts Subject, ‘Book and Video Curation for the Growth of College Students’

Jonghee Jeon

The purpose of this study is to develop ‘Book and Video Curation for the Growth of College Students’ as a subject within the field of balanced liberal arts area. Students of today's generation live in a busy environment where it is not easy for them to find and read recognized classics or to see visual versions of these works on their own. They are aware of the need, but it is all too easy for such classics to be deprioritized, and it is also difficult for students to judge and gauge what a good book is as opposed to one that is a “must-read.” In this context, this study is related to developing a book-and video-based liberal arts curriculum that can help college students develop their thinking skills and their academic capabilities from a holistic perspective. To this end, from 2023 to 2024, screen-selling works, books in curation and liberal arts subjects, and video-related journals were surveyed online from various angles, focusing on Google and Riss. The collected data were summarized and reflected in related prior research, research methods, and research results. Through this study, we hope that college students will be able to have a meaningful time reading their chosen books, reconfirming the work’s message through video, and developing the wherewithal to reflect upon and put into practice what they have learned.

The African Union Agenda 2063 and Data Protection: Prospects, Challenges, and Policy Implications

Akintayo Eyitayo

The 2015 African Union Agenda 2063 promises “an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens.” Within its seven ambitions and several flagship projects, digital transformation and data governance are becoming key drivers of socio-economic success. Data is an economic resource and a human rights problem in the digital age, therefore adequate data protection is crucial for trust, privacy, and Africa's involvement in the global digital economy. This article investigates how Agenda 2063 prioritises data protection and cybersecurity. The African Union Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection (Malabo Convention), regional frameworks from ECOWAS, EAC, and SADC, and global regimes like the GDPR and APEC Privacy Framework are highlighted. While 39 African countries have data protection legislation and 34 have Data Protection Authorities, enforcement is patchy, with fewer than half of AU member states ratifying the Malabo Convention. Weak institutional capability, digital illiteracy, cybercrime expansion, and fragmented policy approaches are major issues. Opportunities exist: the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) facilitates harmonised digital trade, Africa's young are a source of digital innovation, and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) boosts global relevance. To improve cyber resilience, the report advises expediting legislative framework harmonisation, boosting institutions and public awareness, and encouraging multi-stakeholder collaboration. Agenda 2063 needs strong data protection measures to protect privacy and rights and enable inclusive, secure, and sustainable development across the continent.

Stochastic weight matrix dynamics during learning and Dyson Brownian motion

Gert Aarts, Biagio Lucini, Chanju Park

We demonstrate that the update of weight matrices in learning algorithms can be described in the framework of Dyson Brownian motion, thereby inheriting many features of random matrix theory. We relate the level of stochasticity to the ratio of the learning rate and the mini-batch size, providing more robust evidence to a previously conjectured scaling relationship. We discuss universal and non-universal features in the resulting Coulomb gas distribution and identify the Wigner surmise and Wigner semicircle explicitly in a teacher-student model and in the (near-)solvable case of the Gaussian restricted Boltzmann machine.

General patterns of existence of the accordion in the 20th century

Bohdan Kysliak, Tetiana Tokar

Statement of the problem. Today the process of integrating the accordion into various types of musical practice continues to be in almost all countries of the world. The general course of the evolution of accordion performance, despite all attempts to limit it to pop music or house hold music, undoubtedly indicates a gradual but natural “ascension” of the accordion to the heights of academic music. According to this thesis, the purpose of the article is an attempt to offer a generalized description of the socio-cultural situation that led to the formation of the academic field of accordion performance. The results and conclusions. The keyboard accordion appeared en masse in all European countries almost at the same time – in the 20s and early 30s of the 20th century. The instrument quickly attracted attention of performers who switch from piano or various types of the hand harmonicas to the new instrument. A specific point in the development of accordion performance, in our opinion, is the fact that the instrument does not become a house hold immediately, as it happened with its predecessors – hand harmonicas, but only after a period of stage being in the hands of professional performers (variety shows, music in restaurants and dance halls). The recognition of the accordion as a “serious” instrument is evidenced by a number of certain phenomena: the appearance of this instrument in special secondary and higher educational institutions, a significant number of concert accordionists whose program includes mainly classical transcriptions and original works, and also the appearance of a number of records. The development of original repertoire for the accordion was the most rapid in Germany, not only because of its wide spread use in this country, but also because it was here that professional composers first turned to the creation of special literature. After the Second World War, the accordion gradually secured the dual status of a pop and academic instrument, and its pop component seemed to split, as one part of the repertoire passed into the stratum of house hold music, and the other, more high quality, acquired the features of academicism. Overtime, the instrument demonstrated the tendency to leave the concert stage. On the other hand, the undeniable growth of the performers’ professionalism, the further improvement of technical and constructive characteristics, the active development of the repertoire, the constantly increasing level of technique, the appearance of the accordion in modern chamber music, etc., speak of the reverse process – the process of active integration of the accordion into the sphere of professional classical instruments. Thus, in our opinion, the development trends that are clearly evident today in the repertoire of accordionists indicate that the keyboard accordion, even if it is not as large-scale as the button one, is still quite firmly established on the academic scene.

Understanding Visual Arts Experiences of Blind People

Franklin Mingzhe Li, Lotus Zhang, Maryam Bandukda et al.

Visual arts play an important role in cultural life and provide access to social heritage and self-enrichment, but most visual arts are inaccessible to blind people. Researchers have explored different ways to enhance blind people's access to visual arts (e.g., audio descriptions, tactile graphics). However, how blind people adopt these methods remains unknown. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 blind visual arts patrons to understand how they engage with visual artwork and the factors that influence their adoption of visual arts access methods. We further examined interview insights in a follow-up survey (N=220). We present: 1) current practices and challenges of accessing visual artwork in-person and online (e.g., Zoom tour), 2) motivation and cognition of perceiving visual arts (e.g., imagination), and 3) implications for designing visual arts access methods. Overall, our findings provide a roadmap for technology-based support for blind people's visual arts experiences.

Hypothesis: A new approach to property-based testing

D. MacIver, Zac Hatfield-Dodds

Property-based testing is a style of testing popularised by the QuickCheck family of libraries, first in Haskell (Claessen & Hughes, 2000) and later in Erlang (Arts, Hughes, Johansson, & Wiger, 2006), which integrates generated test cases into existing software testing workflows: Instead of tests that provide examples of a single concrete behaviour, tests specify properties that hold for a wide range of inputs, which the testing library then attempts to generate test cases to refute. For a general introduction to property-based testing, see (MacIver, 2019).

Powerful knowledge, transformations and Didaktik /curriculum thinking

Zongyi Deng

From the vantage point of knowledge transformations entailed in curriculum making, this article seeks to contribute to a rethinking of the concept of powerful knowledge. It makes a case for linking the teaching of content knowledge to the development of human powers (understanding, ways of thinking, capabilities and dispositions) by way of knowledge transformations. The article starts by examining three perspectives or contributions to knowledge transformations: (1) Bernstein’s recontextualisation ; (2) Chevallard’s didactic transposition ; and (3) Gericke et al .’s transformations . This is followed by a discussion of what transformations entail from the perspective of Bildung -centred Didaktik , and what transformations mean in today’s context if education is centrally concerned with the development of human powers. It concludes by questioning the conflation of powerful knowledge with disciplinary knowledge. Modeling the art historical canon

Laura M F Bertens

Although the art historical canon has been the subject of fierce debate, it remains an essential construct, shaping textbooks and survey courses. Visual representations of the canon often illustrate these narratives. Students encounter diagrams in their studies and it is important to make them aware of the illusion of scientific objectivity. This paper proposes the use of the computer ontology, as a modeling tool with which students can make translations of existing diagrams. This forces them to reconsider the modeling decisions underlying traditional representations. The article takes as its case study the translation of Alfred Barr’s diagram of Modern Art, using the free tool Protégé. An analysis of this process allows us to consider the ambiguous meanings of nodes, relationships and dimensions of the model. Asking students to actively recreate this network of information is shown to be a valuable addition to traditional survey courses on Modern Art.

A Case Study of the Liberal Arts Curriculum at a College of Lifelong Education for Adult Learners

Mikyung Sim

This study aimed to explore the operation case of the liberal arts curriculum found at ‘A’ university, a long term participating university of the ‘Lifelong Education at Universities for the Future Education Project.’ For this study, qualitative research methodology was used and the data collection for this study was conducted for five months. As a result of the study, we found that ‘A’ university, like other universities involved in this project, has been trying to establish a flexible academic system, such as a RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning Experience), on-line education, night and weekend classes, and blended education. Moreover, ‘A’ university recently made a progress in preparing a liberal arts curriculum, tailored to adult learners as it took into account the age of adult learners and the level of their basic academic ability. However, several problems were also found in the process of introducing this type of liberal arts curriculum. The first problem was the university’s top down operation with administrative practices. And The second problem involved issues pertaining to quality in the management of the liberal arts curriculum. These findings were consistent with the recent concerns raised in previous studies. The results of this study suggest that universities participating in the ‘Lifelong Education at Universities for the Future Education Project’ need to consider the gap between the ideal goals found in the project and the realistic needs of adult learners enrolled in a liberal arts curriculum.

A Study on the Development and Effectiveness of a Psychology Liberal Arts Class Incorporating Self-Directed Learning

Kyunglee Kang

The purpose of this study is to develop a psychology liberal arts class incorporating self-directed learning and to analyze the effects of its implementation. In this study, a psychology liberal arts class connected with the self-directed learning factors was developed for self-directed learning. In order to analyze the effects of liberal arts class, data were collected and analyzed using reflection journal writing and in-depth interviews with 17 university students. The results are as follows. First, at the beginning of the liberal arts class, the process of students attempting to learn was found to be of significant importance regarding the learning process itself, as well as the trial and error process based on past experiences. From the perspective of the Galaxy model, this process is related to cognitive self-directed learning. From the perspective of the education subject, the intention of the learner is founded in education. Second, at the mid point of the liberal arts class, the process of realization among the students in regards to their learning was found to lie in an understanding of the learning phenomenon based on psychology, solving problems related to learning through the connection between psychology and learning science, and the use of teaching media for effective learning. From the perspective of the Galaxy model, this process is related to educational self-directed learning. From the perspective of the education subject, the intentions of learners and instructors are implemented in education. Third, at the end of the liberal arts class, the students’ growth process through learning was found to rest in the areas of their pursuit of value and their pursuit of change. From the perspective of the Galaxy model, this process is related to existential self-directed learning. From the perspective of the education subject, the intention of the learner becomes central in education.</br>The conclusions are as follows. First, it is necessary for us to develop a liberal arts class with self-directed capabilities that will be required in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Second, such classes need to reflect the learner’s intentions that take into consideration the self-directed learning elements of time, space, exchange, and body elements in the design process of the liberal arts class for self-directed learning capabilities. Third, we need to discuss the appropriate role of the instructor in the operational process of the liberal arts class that possess self-directed learning capabilities.

The Cult and Images of Saint Rose of Lima in Lithuania

Rūta Janonienė

Isabel Flores de Oliva (1586–1617), generally known as Saint Rose of Mary or Saint Rose of Lima, became the first and, until today, the most venerated Catholic saint of Latin America. Almost immediately after her death, this Dominican of the Third Order, who died young and won fame for her highly ascetic life, various virtues and immovable faith, developed a cult following in Peru. Soon enough the cult had spread across South America and Europe. The topic of Saint Rose of Lima has been addressed in a great many publications that appeared in various (primarily Spanish-speaking) countries, but in Lithuania, the devotion to and images of this saint have not received specific research attention. By referring to the published sources and manuscripts, as well as the surviving ecclesiastical artworks, the author of this paper aims to discuss in more detail how information about the life and personality of Saint Rose of Lima was disseminated in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, what information about Latin America, its culture and people was conveyed in these sources, whether it was reflected in the icono- graphy of the saint, and if so, how.

Crowdfunding as an Alternative Means for Funding Sustainable Appropriate Technology: Acceptance Determinants of Backers

Younghwa Moon, Junseok Hwang

The research and development as well as the propagation of sustainable, appropriate technology requires the availability of stable funding. Crowdfunding is a form of funding whereby small sums of investments or contributions are collected from the general public and used to finance the development of goods or services. This method has been widely used in the arts and cultural fields and presents a useful alternative means by which to fund appropriate technology projects. The aim of this study is to identify the factors that influence backers who participate in appropriate technology projects through crowdfunding platforms, analyze the connections among these factors, and thereby establish the usefulness of crowdfunding as a viable new funding alternative. Results indicate that the key factors influencing user intention to crowdfund appropriate technology projects include social influence, effort expectancy, and perceived trust. In comparison to the findings of previous studies, performance expectancy was not found to have a significant effect. When compared to crowdfunding conducted in other fields, these results suggest that crowdfunding for appropriate technology is closer in nature to donations. Accordingly, for funding of these projects to be successful, aggressive online exposure using the social network service (SNS) of backers should be pursued from the earliest stages of funding.
