This study aims to analyze the use of music in the 2024 Indonesian presidential election. Although the election
was completed on February 15, 2024, the use of music as a campaign tool took place massively. This study tries
to observe how music can influence public opinion to determine the direction of choice and how the public responds to the use of music in politics, in which musicians are seen as tending to be politically affiliated with or
support certain candidates. Thus, a survey method was used to obtain these data. Through the approach of political
involvement theory and supported by interviews, it can be seen how musicians have strategies for creating political
songs. The results showed that some musicians chose to hide their names so that there would be no backlash
among their fans, while others felt afraid that their candidate would lose and affect their careers. This study provides a comprehensive picture of the condition of music in Indonesia that is in contact with the politics of the 2024
presidential election and becomes a kind of roadmap for the use of music in the world of politics in the future.
У статті здійснено комплексний аналіз композиторської спадщини Мануеля Марії Понсе (1882–1948) у контексті її впливу на формування й розвиток виконавської майстерності гітариста. На підставі історико-біографічних матеріалів та джерелознавчого опрацювання епістолярію Понсе—Сеговія простежено становлення індивідуального стилю митця (навчання в Італії, Німеччині та Франції; враження від мексиканського й кубинського фольклору) та окреслено механізми інтернаціоналізації гітари у ХХ ст. Мета дослідження полягає у з’ясуванні ролі творів Понсе у розширенні академічного репертуару та у формуванні техніко-інтерпретаційних компетенцій виконавця. Методологічну основу становлять аналітичний, порівняльно-стильовий та джерелознавчий підходи. Розглянуто ключові зразки: Sonata romántica, Suite antigua, Homenaje a Tárrega, Sonatina meridional. З’ясовано комплексне поєднання фольклорних, неокласичних, неоромантичних та імпресіоністичних рис і пов’язане з ним коло виконавських завдань: кантилене фразування, робота з баре та розширеними позиціями, арпеджіатна фактура, метроритмічні зсуви (геміоли), контроль тембрових контрастів і аплікатурної логіки, а також стильова чутливість до іспано-мексиканського колориту без спрощення чи механічного наслідування традиційних фламенко-прийомів. Уточнено видавничу історію та інтерпретаційну практику окремих опусів (зокрема, редакторські втручання Сеговії та проблеми атрибуції стилізацій). Наукова новизна статті полягає у систематизації виконавських вимог репертуару Понсе як чинника розвитку компетентностей сучасного гітариста. Практичне значення полягає у можливості використання результатів дослідження для оновлення навчальних програм, добору репертуару за рівнями складності та вироблення методичних рекомендацій щодо інтерпретації творів композитора. Узагальнено, що музика Понсе не лише збагатила концертний канон гітари, а й стала важливим чинником становлення професійної виконавської культури ХХ–ХХІ століть.
The purpose of this research is to present a natural language processing-based approach to symbolic music analysis. We propose Mel2Word, a text-based representation including pitch and rhythm information, and a new natural language processing-based melody segmentation algorithm. We first show how to create a melody dictionary using Byte Pair Encoding (BPE), which finds and merges the most frequent pairs that appear in a collection of melodies in a data-driven manner. The dictionary is then used to tokenize or segment a given melody. Utilizing various symbolic melody datasets, we conduct an exploratory analysis and evaluate the classification performance of melody representation models on the MTC-ANN dataset. A comparison with existing segmentation algorithms is also carried out. The result shows that the proposed model significantly improves classification performance in comparison to various melodic features and several existing segmentation algorithms.
Przedmiotem tekstu recenzyjnego są dwie publikacje monograficzne poświęcone Edvardowi Griegowi: Bernarda Piotrowskiego Edvard Grieg. Życie – Fascynacje – Dramaty oraz Agnieszki Dybowskiej-Błoch Edvard Grieg. Życie i twórczość 1843–1907. Są to jedyne tego typu pozycje w języku polskim. Wyszły one spod piór nie muzykologów, lecz skandynawistów. Z powodu popularności muzyki norweskiego twórcy w Polsce, a więc szerokiego zasięgu tych publikacji, za konieczną uznałam ich wieloaspektową ocenę. Równoczesne omówienie dwóch pozycji dotyczących tego samego twórcy pozwala na porównanie różnych sposobów przedstawienia sylwetki i dorobku artysty. Rozważana jest wartość tych pozycji dla szerokiego grona odbiorców, jak i dla osób szczególnie zainteresowanych muzyką i dla muzykologów.
This commentary presents an experimental-composer’s perspective on contemporary music therapy practice. I begin by offering my impressions of the field, gathered through interviews with practising music therapists, and an examination of the relevant literature. Then, the commentary first draws upon G. Douglas Barrett’s radical post-sonic theorisation of music to question the future of existing music in therapy, before instrumentalising avant-garde aesthetics to imagine what music may become in music therapy. This exploration will pay particular attention to the impacts of the dematerialisation of the art object in contemporary art, and the potential benefits a similar decentering of sound in contemporary music practices may provoke—specifically, the creation of theoretical frameworks that further suppress the authority of canonical forms, and increased contributions from previously-marginalised groups. Next, the commentary presents an analysis of two recent musical compositions that determinedly decenter sound, before examining the appropriateness of this aesthetic to therapeutic contexts. Finally, the commentary signposts a number of historical antecedents that illustrate music therapy’s potential for rigorous (and radical) selfexamination, and examines how these efforts may be expanded.
This article considers the reception of pianist Nikolai Orloff (1892-1964) by
the British musical press through an analysis of reviews published by The
Musical Times, and also by national and local newspapers held in digital
archives. A hybrid methodology was used to identify, sift, and code relevant
primary source material in a large digital archive within the context of
existing Orloff scholarship. Examples of the reviews relating to Orloff’s
performances are given, and suggestions for future projects made.
The aim of the paper is to inform the professional public about the project of processing mutual correspondence of Jan Novák and his teacher Bohuslav Martinů in the years 1947–1959. Sources for this work are part of the unprocessed estate of Jan Novák relatively recently deposited in the Czech Museum of Music in Prague. The primary research on the subject of the project will be realized by the joint musicological team for the first time. The key motivating factor of this project is the centenary of the birth of composer Jan Novák in 2021, to which the joint research team of the Institute of Musicology of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University and the Bohuslav Martinů Department will direct the publication of a book publication. Since the personality of Jan Novák has so far lacked his own book monograph on life and work, as well as a catalogue of works, this publication should serve as the first representative professional entry into the issues of his musical thinking and complicated life path. At the same time, it should become a starting point for further biographical research, as Jan Novák's relationship with Bohuslav Martinů was crucial for his lifelong artistic orientation.
El 19 de septiembre del 2017 un terremoto sacudió la zona central de México. Sesenta inmuebles se derrumbaron y fallecieron alrededor de doscientas personas. Un grupo de brigadistas conformados por ingenieros de audio y sonidistas, utilizando su equipo de audio, asistieron en las labores de búsqueda de sobrevivientes en los edificios colapsados por el siniestro. En dicho proceso, experimentaron un posible rompimiento epistemológico, al convertir la escucha mediada en un recurso para la acción social. Considerando la utilidad de su equipo en un contexto caótico, extendieron las fronteras de su profesión, el uso de tecnología y la manipulación de su cuerpo y de su escucha para el bien común, reaprendiendo el hábito de escucha. Para presentar el caso, se han revisado los trabajos más propositivos de la tecnología del audio rescate, el marco teórico sociológico de la comunicación acústica y la mediación y transformación del cuerpo a través del uso de tecnología. Para enmarcar dicha transformación de la escucha se incluye el testimonio de la intervención de uno de los miembros de la brigada de los Gorriones Rojos y se hace una revisión de algunos materiales impresos y audiovisuales sobre y de los individuos y organizaciones que surgieron como resultado de estos esfuerzos.
Обчислено візуальну репрезентабельність національного музейно-запо-відного ландшафту України як інтегральний показник за декількома критеріями (44 установи) в соціальних мережах Фейсбук та Інстаграм. Вияв-лено долученість 77–91% національних музейно-заповідних закладів до сучасних візуальних форм власної репрезентації. Натомість загальний рівень «візуальної привабливості» виявився значно нижчим: лише 30–45% національних музеїв і установ масово зацікавлюють власників соціальних акаунтів. Найбільше візуально репрезентабельним в обох мережах сумарно визначено «Мистецький Арсенал».
Констатовано повне залучення музейного простору до здійснення культурної політики «лагідної українізації». Такий підхід найефективніше репрезентують «музеї під відкритим небом» (Хортиця, Кам’яна Могила, Пирогове та ін.). Зафіксовано певне протиріччя між зазначеним трендом і підвищеною візуальною привабливістю художньо-мистецьких установ без надмірних ідеологічних акцентів у діяльності, що можна пояснити багаторівневістю української ідентичності.

Benjamin Ipavec is deemed to be the key composer of Slovenian nationalistic movement in the 19th Century. But he also composed solo songs with piano accompaniment on German texts. He is typical representative of musical “biedermeier”. He attempted to achieve the synthesis of perfect form and profound emotional expression.
There is an interesting collection of manuscripts from the parish church of St. James in Brno. This collection covers a continuous period from early years of the church in 13th century up to early modern time. The collection has been preserved relatively untouched up to these days which is important and quite rare fact. Today it contains 127 manuscripts which can be found in the Brno city archive. Naturally, most of them are liturgical books and many also contain musical notation. This paper aims to present those liturgical books of the collection, which are musicologically relevant. There are mainly missals, but also Psalters, breviaries and graduals can be found in the collection. Main expansion of the manuscript collection ended around 1500. By this time new printed books came into use.
Статья посвящена особенностям исполнительской интерпретации шести фортепианных концертов Родиона Щедрина, которые уже основательно утвердились в репертуаре разных пианистов мира. В статье рассматривается исполнительский стиль современных пианистов - постоянных исполнителей произведений Щедрина. Среди них Николай Петров, Екатерина Мечетина, Оли Мустонен, Денис Мацуев, Алексей Володин, Йол Юм Сон, а также сам композитор, который, будучи виртуозным пианистом, представлял на премьерах свои Первый, Второй и Третий фортепианные концерты. Значительные идеи и оригинальные замыслы получают в фортепианных концертах Родиона Щедрина яркое оформление, его музыка виртуозна, богато орнаментирована, насыщена целым рядом технических трудностей. Эти качества делают его концерты необычайно привлекательными для современных исполнителей. В настоящей статье исследуется суть новаторства Щедрина в жанре фортепианного концерта, умение композитора ярко показать солиста и его искусство владения инструментом, не пренебрегая глубиной смыслового качества музыки. На примере фортепианных концертов Щедрина, созданных в разные творческие периоды, автор статьи прослеживает эволюцию концертного стиля композитора в сторону повышения виртуозности, более тщательной детализации фактуры и тонкой нюансировки, обогащения оркестро вого фонизма. В статье отмечается, что в последних концертах Щедрин ориентировался на техническую оснащенность и исполнительский стиль отдельных современных пианистов.
On the basis of the "zygonic" theory of musical understanding (Ockelford, 2006), Grundy and Ockelford (2014) investigated musical expectations evoked during the course of hearing a piece for the first time in a prodigious musical savant (Derek Paravicini). Overall, the results provided by Derek support the principles of the zygonic theory, especially that the higher the implication factor of a note, the more likely Derek would predict its occurrence. In my commentary, I first raise the question of the use of such individuals as musical savants to generalize findings to the general population, and second I address the issue of the task and the stimuli used.
Therapy often involves the development of an intimate therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist. By introducing the story of Hyun in music therapy, I invite readers to discover what happens during mutual music making process and what it means to the child and the therapist. I also situate this story within a triadic relationship – the child, the therapist and the family (especially the mother) so that one can see a comprehensive picture of how the happenings of music therapy relate to immediate outside world of music therapy, and vice versa. More importantly, I try to show the inner workings of the therapist and her wonderings in response to the client in order to clarify the core aspects of therapeutic process.
This article concerns processes of music teaching within the project Philharmonic Band, Choral, and Music School in the city of Indiaroba, 100 km from Aracaju, State of Sergipe. This study aims at understanding and reflecting upon music education through the use of traditional methods of instrumental music teaching. It includes comparisons with other areas of knowledge, considering how certain sociological ideas correlate with these particular musical education approaches, especially in regards to group teaching of wind instruments.
Continúan las reflexiones iniciadas en la primera parte de este artículo (AnM 62, 2007, 39-74) sobre la procedencia y evolución del ritmo en la música de Occidente, surgidas en la lectura de destacados escritos de música desde la antigüedad cristiana hasta la configuración de la notación mensural hacia la segunda mitad del siglo XIII. Esta segunda parte se funda en los escritores latinos de música, desde San Agustín hasta el siglo XIII.
The tradition of developmental psychology as been of fundamental importance in providing versions of musical childhoods, particularly for the earliest years of childhood. However, in its focus on the individual child and in its search for musical behaviors assumed to be common across all children, developmental psychology has tended to be insufficiently interested in wider cultural processes. At the same time, the disciplines of ethnomusicology, the sociology of music, and popular music and media studies, valuable as they are in describing and theorizing the nature of sociocultural practices in music, have nothing to contribute to our understanding of musical practices in young children’s lives. We suggest, then, that the integration of interdisciplinary accounts of young children’s musical experiences is essential if we are to acquire fuller understandings of their musicality, the diversity o their musical practices, and how they develop musically within heterogeneous contexts.
