Changes in body weight, awareness, and behaviors among workers participating in an online specific health guidance program incorporating multiple nudges: a process evaluation

Masaki Takebayashi, Chieko Kashiwado, Yudai Kaneda et al.

Objectives: In Japan, specific health guidance (SHG) — comprising intensive and motivational support — has increasingly incorporated nudges and online modalities to prevent metabolic syndrome. This practice aimed to conduct a process evaluation of an online SHG program that integrated multiple nudges by examining changes in body weight, health awareness, and health-related behaviors. Methods: A 100-day online SHG program was conducted within a health insurance association of a Japanese securities firm. The program included three group seminars, individual counseling, self-monitoring via a mobile application, and distribution of video content. In addition to health education, multiple nudges (eg, implementation intention and commitment nudges) were embedded throughout the program. Results: The analysis included 181 respondents (94 intensive; 87 motivational) who completed follow-up surveys. Improvements were observed across most outcomes; for example, 51.4% of participants experienced weight reduction (56.4% in the intensive group and 46.0% in the motivational group). Notably, the proportion of participants engaging in self-weighing more than once per week increased substantially, from 39.4% to 83.0% in intensive support group (Cohen’s h=0.93), and from 49.4% to 77.0% in motivational support group (Cohen’s h=0.58). Conclusions: The combination of multiple nudges and health education can have promoted engagement in healthy behaviors. This practice has limitations such as not assessing long-term outcomes. To overcome them, a longitudinal study using multi-year health checkup data is planned.

Hierarchical data synchronous interaction in nonlinear complex systems

Yuan Lufeng, Gao Shijie, He Xin et al.

Nonlinear complex systems are widely used in various industries, and the complexity and dynamism of the systems pose enormous challenges to data synchronization and interaction. This study proposes a method based on signal synchronization for data synchronization and interaction in nonlinear complex systems. The synchronization interaction path of data was analyzed, and signals were used as the carrier for data synchronization. The data synchronization interaction was carried out by combining the main synchronization signal and the auxiliary synchronization signal. Furthermore, mean filtering was introduced for signal filtering, and the main synchronization process was divided into two parts: coarse and fine tuning. The experimental results showed that the main synchronization frequency deviation of the research method was 303 Hz when the main synchronization completion rate was 100% in a −15 dB signal-to-noise ratio environment. In the analysis of data synchronization success rate, the research method achieved a highest success rate of 99.7% when the data transmission density was 50 pieces per minute. The experiment shows that the research method can effectively improve the quality and efficiency of data synchronization and interaction in nonlinear complex systems.

Koki Ono, Kiyoaki Arakawa, Daisuke Yamada et al.

Objectives: This scoping review aims to examine the existing use of eye-tracking technologies being applied to measure negative mental health-related outcomes. The review was guided by the following questions: 1) What eye-tracking methods are currently in use?; and 2) What type of negative mental health-related outcomes are these methods being applied to for estimation? Results will be evaluated to determine their prospective implementation in remote work as a mental health indicator. Methods: A scoping review was conducted in order to collect data from a range of sources and evaluate many distinct research methodologies. A scoping review was chosen for this study to widely report on the research currently being conducted, rather than answer a specific question from a focused set of evidence. On May 26, 2022, a systematic search of the scientific literature was conducted to identify any eye-tracking methods that have been used to measure stress and anxiety. Results: Out of an initial 5,356 eligible articles, a total of 14 articles were included in this scoping review. Estimation outcomes also ranged from various mental health-related outcomes with the most common outcome relating to stress and fatigue. Other outcomes included sleepiness, drowsiness, arousal, frustration, hypervigilance, defensive state, peritraumatic dissociation, and anxiety. Conclusions: Preliminary results show a very promising connection between eye metrics and negative mental health-related outcomes, which are very relevant to workplace mental health as well.

A multi-discretization scheme for topology optimization based on the parameterized level set method

Wei Peng, Liu Yang, Li Zuyu

In the framework of the parameterized level set method, the structural analysis and topology representation can be implemented in a decoupling way. A parameterized level set function, typically, using radial basis functions (RBFs), is a linear combination of a set of prescribed RBFs and coefficients. Once the coefficients are determined, the theoretical level set function is determined. Exploiting this inherent property, we propose a multi-discretization method based on the parameterized level set method. In this approach, a coarse discretization is applied to do the structural analysis whereas another dense discretization is employed to represent the structure topology. As a result, both efficient analysis and high-resolution topological design are available. Note that the dense discretization only accounts for a more precise and smooth description of the theoretical level set function rather than introduce extra design freedom or incur interference to structural analysis or the optimization process. In other words, this decoupling way will not add to the computational burden of structural analysis or result in non-uniqueness of converged results for a particular analysis setting. Numerical examples in both two-dimension and three-dimension show effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

Do Online Bicycle Routing Portals Adequately Address Prevalent Safety Concerns?

Martin Loidl, Hartwig H. Hochmair

Safety concerns are among the most prevalent deterrents for bicycling. The provision of adequate bicycling infrastructure is considered as one of the most efficient means to increase cycling safety. However, limited public funding does not always allow agencies to implement cycling infrastructure improvements at the desirable level. Thus, bicycle trip planners can at least partly alleviate the lack of adequate infrastructure by recommending optimal routes in terms of safety. The presented study provides a systematic review of 35 bicycle routing applications and analyses to which degree they promote safe bicycling. The results show that most trip planners lack corresponding routing options and therefore do not sufficiently address safety concerns of bicyclists. Based on these findings, we developed recommendations on how to better address bicycling safety in routing portals. We suggest employing current communication technology and analysis to consider safety concerns more explicitly.

Optimization of Unicondylar Knee Replacement according to Contact Pressure

Ackermann Michal, Čapek Lukáš

The project deals with contact pressure analysis on two constructional types of modern type of knee prosthesis - the unicompartmental knee replacement. In the first part of the project the contact pressure distribution on replacements is analyzed in two ways. The first method is experimental with using pressure sensitive Pressurex® films. Second approach is a numerical analysis with the support of finite element method (FEM) made in ANSYS Multiphysics 10.0 software package. Results from both approaches are compared at the end of the first part. In the second part the chosen type of replacements is optimized according to contact pressure. The goal was to reduce the contact pressure and to improve its distribution for taking its full advantages.

Recent methodologies for reliability-based design optimization

Kharmanda G., Mohsine A., Makloufi A. et al.

In the field of Deterministic Design Optimization (DDO), the designer reduces the structural cost without taking into account uncertainties concerning materials, geometry and loading. This way the resulting optimum solution may represent a lower level of reliability and thus a higher risk of failure. But in the Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) model, the mean values of uncertain system variables are usually used as design variables, and the cost is optimized subject to prescribed probabilistic constraints as defined by a nonlinear mathematical programming problem. Therefore, a RBDO solution that reduces the structural weight in uncritical regions does not only provide an improved design but also a higher level of confidence in the design. In this paper, we present the advantage of the DDO and RBDO models and next some recent methodologies in order to show that the RBDO model is a practical tool for structural engineers.

Calculation time optimization for stochastic analysis of an industrial structure

Bendaou O., Elhami A., Aannaque A. et al.

Dynamic analysis of industrial structures may be costly from a numerical point of view. Thus, the need and the importance of reducing the size of the problem become obvious. One of the main hypothesises in the use of component mode synthesis method is that the model is deterministic. That is to say the parameters used in the model have defined and fixed values. Furthermore, carrying out the structure's response involving uncertain material, geometrical parameters, limit conditions, manufacturing tolerances and/or loading conditions is essential in a global design process. Our main aim in the present work is to test and validate a method which consists in condensing the system (i.e. to reduce the number of unknowns) and carrying out the stochastic study with a noniterative method. This method makes it possible to solve these problems without using the classical method whereby a direct modal calculation combined with the Monte Carlo simulation is made. The classical method is by nature iterative and hence CPU intensive. A propeller is taken as an example in order to validate the proposed methods. The results obtained agree well with references results and show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
