“Like a small trip back to the GDR”? East German evaluations of the television serial Weissensee and its authenticity in a dynamic discourse landscape

Löblich Maria

In this article, I take the example of the historical German television fiction success Weissensee and ask how East Germans have read and judged the way this serial constructed their past more than a decade after its television premiere. This question is raised against the background that Weissensee was produced at a time when all questions related to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) seemed to have been answered. In the meantime, the remembrance discourse has changed. Hall’s encoding/decoding model, Giddens’s identity theory, and Sabrow’s typology of memories of the GDR provided the theoretical framework. Empirically, this study draws on five focus groups of East Germans, and the findings demonstrate that the dominant media memory, the dictatorship discourse, still operates within three reading positions. More recent discourses are visible but have not (yet) expanded the horizon to relocate oneself in the past. This study contributes to the rare research on authenticity from an audience perspective.

Local “Memory Wars” and the Phenomenon of “Cancellation” in the Media of “Accommodative Culture” (Case of Republic of Tatarstan)

Alexander V. Ovchinnikov

The article examines the problem of theory and practice of studying the internal Russian regional “memory wars”, which unfold, as a rule, in the local media and are accompanied by the phenomenon of “corporate cancellation”. It is stated that today the analysis of the ideological content of “memory wars” (“what is being argued about”) prevails in scientific practices of solving this problem, whereas it is more important to understand the socio-political mechanisms of the emergence of “conflicts of the past” in specific conditions of a non-“agonal” (not “Western”) types of culture. The aim of the study is to create a methodological model for analyzing the internal Russian regional “memory wars”. As a result of the research, the main provisions on the study of “memory wars” in the media of “accommodative culture” and the predominance of “corporate cancellation” mechanisms over the “culture of cancellation” were formulated. The dispute is going on between “Bulgarians” and “Tatars” about the origin of the Tatars and the difficulty of official recognition of the Kryashens (“Tatars- christians”) as a people other than Tatar, as well as polemics continues between Ufa and Kazan scientists about the ethnicity of the population living in the northwestern territories of contemporary Bashkortostan and about some archaeological objects located there. The main conclusion of the study is the statement of the secondary role of the factual content of the “memory wars”, the “deep” specifics of which are determined by “external” socio-political and even economic conditions, expressed in the implementation of “corporate abolition”. This conclusion is intended for the attention of social philosophers, anthropologists and historians.

Disney characters as moral role models: a discourse analysis of Coco and Encanto

Ruta Vaidya, Yousra Osman

Popular culture characters and narratives can influence people’s understanding of moral actions, and thus guide their behaviors accordingly. Films have proven to be strong anchors in people’s understanding of morality. We examine the perception of resilience as a moral characteristic in examining not just how people become resilient (thereby focusing on impact and action) but also to study “resilience” as a discourse and discussion in society as a moral message. We argue that popular culture narratives, particularly Disney films, help reinforce moral meanings of resilience. By conducting a discourse analysis of two films-Encanto and Coco and particularly focusing on resilience, we aim to contribute to a deepened understanding of Disney’s role in producing morality through diverse narratives and characters who serve as role models.

Political communication and COVID-19

D. Lilleker, I. Coman, M. Gregor et al.

This concluding chapter draws together data from the case study chapters to gain an understanding of the role of political communication during the pandemic and the way strategies were instituted within nations. We find across the phases of the crisis a range of differing strategies but four common themes. Firstly, crises exacerbate the trend towards personalisation. Secondly, the crucial role of the mass media in informing the public, but also the fact that tensions between the political and media spheres remain prevalent. Thirdly, we suggest that social media plays a largely positive role, despite being described as causing an infodemic, it was used far more to bring communities together. Finally, where misinformation prevailed, and tensions over measures became prominent, this was due to severe systemic polarisation existing which prevented messages of unity and calls to rally around the flag being adhered to. Hence political crises and instability create the conditions for the effects of a pandemic to be felt worse;given the parlous state of many of the world’s populations, these factors are likely to exacerbate this or future crises.

Criando Material educacional: invoçao, arduino e movimiento maker

Language teaching is no panacea: A theoretical perspective and critical evaluation of language in education within the South African context

Heila Jordaan

Language competence is both the means and the end to educational achievement, and multilingualism in particular has important cognitive, academic and societal advantages. The linguistic diversity in South Africa creates an ideal context to provide learners with the educational opportunities that promote high levels of linguistic proficiency in their home and additional languages. Unfortunately, the education system has not delivered on the constitutional imperatives of promoting multilingualism. English continues to dominate as the preferred language of teaching and learning, at the expense and marginalisation of the African languages. This is regarded by many researchers as the primary reason for the disturbingly low numeracy and literacy achievement levels of the majority of South African schoolchildren. However, the effects of language-in-education practices on academic achievement are not straightforward. This paper analyses recent research pertaining to the effects of language-in-education practices and argues that the critical role of educational linguistics is neglected in the South African education system. This affects the quality of teaching irrespective of the language of instruction and has a significant impact on the achievement of our children. The purpose of this paper is to present a critical theoretical perspective on language in education in order to influence policy and practice. An additional aim is to promote the role of speech-language therapists (SLTs) in education, since these professionals are well positioned to work in collaboration with educators to enhance language learning in mainstream/ordinary classrooms. However, SLTs also need to be well informed about the challenges in education and the theory underlying language-in-education practices.
