Determining the Factors Affecting Football Fans' Satisfaction with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Technology

İbrahim Avcı, Öznur Ayık

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology has been introduced in the sports industry as a decision support system designed to assist referees in making the correct decisions when overseeing a sporting event. In Turkey, VAR technology has been deployed to lessen controversies in football matches, but it has not completely eliminated them. As a result, it is crucial to establish whether fans, a key stakeholder in the sports sector, are satisfied with VAR technology. In this context, the study aims to investigate the effects of football fans' perceived value and identification with VAR technology on their satisfaction with it. Furthermore, the mediating role of attitudes towards the technology and the moderating role of knowledge about VAR technology will also be examined. The study used the snowball sampling method, and data were obtained via an online survey, with 411 fans participating over the data collection period. Using the fan data, Structural Equation Modeling was performed using the AMOS tool, and the study hypotheses were tested. The research revealed that identification and perceived value of VAR technology have a positive effect on satisfaction with this technology, with attitude toward technology acting as a mediator. The level of knowledge about VAR technology has a moderating effect in the relationship between satisfaction and perceived value. These findings have practical and theoretical implications for both the sports sector and the academic discipline.

Deriving Movement Categories in Rugby Sevens

Ciara Finnegan, Michael Scriney, Anna Donnla O’Hagan et al.

ABSTRACT The primary aim of this study was to generate sport‐specific movement category velocity thresholds for elite rugby sevens male and female players. Match activity data were collected via Global Positioning Systems (GPS) (10 Hz) from 19 male and 11 female players during 88 competitive international fixtures during the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons. A two‐stage unsupervised clustering method was applied. The elbow method, a technique used to determine the optimal number of clusters in a dataset, was first applied to identify the number of movement categories. Spectral clustering was then used to define the velocity thresholds corresponding to each category. For both male and female rugby sevens, four movement categories were identified with varying velocity thresholds. The male movement category velocity thresholds were low (0.0–2.05 m.s−1), moderate (2.06–4.26 m.s−1), high (4.27–7.20 m.s−1) and very high (> 7.20 m.s−1). Although the female movement category velocity thresholds were low (0.0–1.87 m.s−1), moderate (1.88–3.74 m.s−1), high (3.75–5.97 m.s−1) and very high (> 5.97 m.s−1). A comparison of the total distance covered in the respective gender‐specific zones revealed that females covered a significantly less distance in the low‐velocity movement category (p = 0.02) and a significantly more distance in the very‐high‐velocity movement category (p < 0.001). This work informs customised movement categories that allow for better physical load assessments in male and female rugby sevens and the provision of sport‐specific and gender‐specific conditioning programmes.

The role of physical activity during pregnancy and its impact on the course of labour and labor outcomes - a review of literature

Anna Krysińska, Antonina Drzewiecka, Artur Drzewiecki et al.

Introduction: Pregnancy is a transformative stage in a woman’s life, often accompanied by questions and concerns about the safety of both the mother and the developing child. Key aspects of daily life, including physical activity, diet, and work, are frequently scrutinized, with many misconceptions persisting about what constitutes a healthy pregnancy. However, scientific evidence consistently demonstrates that an active and healthy pregnancy benefits both maternal and neonatal outcomes. Aim of the study: This study aims to synthesize current knowledge on the role of physical activity during pregnancy and its impact on labor outcomes. By reviewing recent research, we seek to provide a comprehensive overview of the benefits of physical activity, address barriers to exercise during pregnancy, and highlight evidence-based recommendations. The goal is to raise awareness among healthcare providers and pregnant women about the importance of incorporating physical activity into prenatal care. Materials and methods: This study incorporated evidence from peer-reviewed articles, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials. Over 55 studies, available on PubMed and Google Scholar were analysed and critically reviewed to create a comprehensive overview of the topic. Conclusion: Physical activity during pregnancy is a vital component of prenatal care that promotes maternal and neonatal well-being. Regular exercise reduces the likelihood of pregnancy complications and improves delivery outcomes. Additionally, it offers long-term benefits for neonatal development. While current guidelines provide a general framework for exercise during pregnancy, personalized recommendations tailored to individual needs are essential to maximize safety and efficacy. This research emphasizes the importance of raising awareness among healthcare providers and pregnant women about the critical role of physical activity in improving health outcomes during pregnancy and beyond.

Team and Coach Gender: The Effect of the Expletive Halftime Speech

Carrington Ream, Hoyoon Jung, Bomin Paek

Although expletive use is considered taboo in most societies, expletives are commonly used in sports. However, the impact of expletives on coaching effectiveness has not received significant attention because of the unique nature of sports in which fierce competition is condoned and even encouraged.Inthe current study, the researchers aim to examine whether expletives alter the effectiveness of speeches given by coaches across genders. Collecting data from a total of 133 respondents, ANOVA demonstrated that expletive word use during halftime speeches by coaches did not play a role in diminishing the coaching effectiveness, regardless of the coach's gender and the players' gender. Additionally, male and female participants perceived expletive speech differently, and student-athletes rated the speeches as significantly more effective than the nonstudent-athletes. This study suggests practical implications for female coaches, who may consider stepping out of traditional expected roles (e.g., supportive and caring) and adopting language in coaching traditionally reserved for male coaches, given that their choice of language will not negatively impact their coaching effectiveness. However, further examination is needed for the robustness of our findings as the current study does not necessarily demonstrate an increase in effectiveness or a positive shift in perceptions from the use of expletives.

Anti-Doping Knowledge, Attitude, and Experience of General Practitioners in Kenya

Jonathan Rotich, Elıjah Rıntaugu, Edna Thangu

General practitioners are regarded as athletic support personnel as they are involved in delivering supportive services such as treating athletes participating in or preparing for sports competitions. General practitioners play a vital role in influencing athletes to fulfill their mandate to adhere to clean sports and therefore, their additional knowledge in sports is required to comprehensively address their health needs without affecting the integrity of rules that govern fair play. General practitioners require sufficient doping knowledge to provide athletes with health needs consistent with anti-doping regulations. In Kenya, no studies have investigated or reported the doping knowledge, attitude or experience of General Practitioners, thus leaving a knowledge gap on their ability to treat competitive athletes harmonious with WADA requirements. Therefore, the study sought to unearth General Practitioners' doping knowledge, attitude, and experience in Kenya. The study's findings have implications on doping knowledge, attitude, and experience of Kenya General Practitioners’ essential to inform the current status of the concept. A cross-sectional analytical study design was selected because of its robustness in describing general practitioners' current doping knowledge, attitude, and experiences. Data was collected using a self-reported and validated questionnaire where 250 General practitioners completed the survey. Findings revealed that Kenyan general practitioners are well aware of doping regulatory agencies of WADA and ADAK. The findings demonstrated that General Practitioners had an average doping knowledge (47.77 ± 14.03) punctuated with limited knowledge of prohibited substances, methods, and substances in certain sports. Work experience significantly influenced General Practitioners knowledge, F (4,245) = 10.852, p< .001. General Practitioners had a negative doping attitude of 45.23 ± 13.64. As many as 22% (55) General Practitioners received doping requests for the last 12 months, where 35.7% (89) of requests are about drugs to aid recovery. Anabolic steroids, corticosteroids, and peptide hormones were among the most sought-after PEDs. General Practitioners in Kenya have inadequate doping knowledge, which could limit their efficacy in treating professional athletes in line with WADA guidelines. Additional anti-doping training could benefit them address this limitation. Although General Practitioners demonstrated a negative attitude, expanding their involvement through active participation in doping seminars, and programs can enhance their understanding of the doping concept necessary to develop and maintain a strong negative attitude.

Effects of applying a multivariate training program on physical fitness and tactical performance in a team sport taught during physical education classes

Avelino Silva, Ricardo Ferraz, Ricardo Ferraz et al.

IntroductionA multivariate training program could be a pedagogical choice to improve physical and tactical performance in a team sport taught during physical education classes at different levels of education. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify the effects of applying a multivariate training program on physical fitness and tactical performance during the teaching of a basketball didactic unit in basic and secondary education.MethodsSeventy-five students from a Portuguese school, with an average age of 15.02 ± 1.31 years, included forty-two students from basic school and thirty-three students from secondary school. The FITescola® test battery was used to assess physical fitness (i.e., sit-ups, push-ups, horizontal impulse, shuttle test, 40 m sprint, agility 4 × 10 m). The Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) was used to assess students' tactical performance for each player's game performance during a 20-minute 3 vs. 3 match. The GPAI variables were decision making index (DMI), skill execution index (SEI), support actions index (SI), and adaptability index (AI). During a basketball didactic unit teaching, the students were randomly divided into two groups, a control group that will not carry out the training program and an experimental group that will carry out a strength training program, high intensity explosive exercises and activities based on small-sided games (SSG) for 6 weeks. The two groups were evaluated in two moments: before the application of the training program and after the application of the training program regarding changes in physical fitness and tactical performance. The independent samples t-test (samples from two groups) and paired sample Test (for the same group) were applied for pre and post-assessment comparisons.ResultsAll indexes present significant differences between basic and secondary students in the pre- and post-assessment tests with small effects (t = −6.54 to −4.82, Δ = −27.57 to −0.16, p<0.05–p< 0.001, d = 0.78–1.05).DiscussionThe results allow to conclude that in a school environment, a well-structured multivariate training program can effectively improve students' tactical skills, increasing their physical conditioning levels.

Marketing Recreation Services in the Changing Landscape of Race and Ethnic Relations

L. N. Camarillo, M. Stodolska, K. Shinew

The changing landscape of race and ethnic relations in the U.S. has influenced how members of racial and ethnic groups use leisure spaces, engage in leisure activities, and interact with community agencies. These current issues necessitate changes in how leisure organizations market their services to diverse constituents. The objectives of this manuscript are to examine: 1) racial and ethnic minority residents’ concerns about the community and the factors that limit their access to recreation services, and 2) the changes made by the park district to their marketing efforts based on the study’s findings. This paper focuses on a research project conducted between 2016-2019 in Urbana, Illinois. The data were collected with the use of individual and group interviews with 46 African American, Latinx, and Asian American users and non-users of park districts’ recreation programs and services. Three rounds of interviews with 14 park district managers and staff were also conducted. The residents revealed that their concerns in the community were related to the lack of socioeconomic resources, transportation, language barriers, crime, interracial and interethnic tensions, and lack of knowledge of recreation opportunities provided by the park district. Based on these findings, the park district made a number of changes to their marketing efforts, including creating an Outreach and Wellness Office, redesigning marketing materials, providing outreach to the most disadvantaged communities, hiring a Spanish-speaking staff member, and delivering free or heavily discounted recreation programs to over 2,400 ethnic and racial minority youth. We recommend that, in addition to the four traditional Ps of marketing (product, place, price, and promotion), recreation agencies who aim to serve ethnically and racially diverse populations include an additional P of marketing—people. The “people” dimension means that agencies recognize diverse constituent groups within the community, assess their recreation needs and constraints with regard to accessing recreation resources; engage with these residents through direct outreach, consultations, and program implementation; and provide programs that are targeted at their unique needs. A Conceptualization of Recreation that Contributes to Human Flourishing

James B. Wise

Recreation and leisure, foundational elements of therapeutic recreation (TR), are nonmaterial, socially constructed entities. While it is difficult, and maybe impossible, to conclusively describe such entities, the task must be tackled because both constructs contribute to human flourishing, a central goal of TR. Concomitantly, a greater in-depth understanding of recreation and leisure, the relationship between the two constructs, and how both connect to flourishing would enhance the effectiveness of therapeutic recreation specialists (TRSs). Since relatively much more philosophical-based inquiry has been devoted to investigating leisure and its relationship to flourishing this article develops and presents a conceptualization of recreation based on a theory authored by Alasdair MacIntyre (1999, 2007). The presented conceptualization of recreation is linked to human flourishing and a correlated view of leisure. The article concludes by discussing four actions TRSs should take to guarantee recreation and leisure function as significant facets of living well. Subscribe to TRJ

Examining future park recreation activities and barriers relative to societal trends

D. Zanon, Jim Curtis, L. Lockstone-Binney et al.

ABSTRACT This study empirically examines how future park recreation is related to enduring societal trends. An online panel of 927 participants was surveyed regarding anticipated park recreation participation in ten years’ time in terms of intended park activities and expected barriers, adapted from the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the Recreation Experience Preference scales and Leisure Constraints theory. Anticipated changes were then linked by participants to the particular societal trends impacting them. The results suggest increased activities are expected from the ‘health awareness’ and ‘independence and convenience’ societal trends, while increased barriers are expected from ‘climate change’, ‘perceived safety’ and ‘population and urban growth’. Overall, the percentage of participants reporting future increased activities at parks is equal to those reporting future barriers; which suggests potentially that there will be no net participation change over time. The management implications, limitations and potential future research agenda stemming from the study are discussed.

Are We Ready for “Radical Leisure”?

B. D. Kivel

ABSTRACT For that past 40 years, hundreds of articles have been published in the major journals that examine leisure, recreation, and parks in North America, for example, the Journal of Leisure Research, Leisure Sciences, and Journal of Recreation and Park Administration. Yet, we are no closer to influencing policy, shifting public opinion, or persuading ourselves and each other that the idea of leisure is something that we should value, embrace, and fight for in terms of a shorter work week and, for that matter, a shorter work life. What is our professional commitment to promoting leisure, advocating for shorter work weeks and for mandatory vacation time? This article explores issues related to leisure, resistance and the hegemony of work.
