Baburam Acharya

This study studies the role of Nepali print media in encouraging good governance, converging on transparency, accountability, public involvement and the rule of law. Print media in Nepal has factually represented as a watchdog of society which has been exposing corruption, maladministration and manipulation of power whereas provided as a platform for civic assignation and public discussion. In spite of constitutional and legal guarantees with legal provisions such as Right to Information Act, challenges together with political interfering, ownership bias, limited rural reach, financial unpredictability and weak monitoring enforcement hamper its effectiveness. Applying with qualitative and analytical research approaches, this study highlights how investigative journalism, ethical reporting and citizen-oriented media can reinforce democratic practices in Nepal. The democratic-participant theory has framed print media as an enabler of citizen empowerment and participatory dialogue rather than only a reporter of events. Strengthening recognized frameworks, professional values is important for Nepali print media to act as a catalyst for accountable, transparent and comprehensive governance.

Childhood under the scope of time: the 20th-century child in the aesthetics of Neorealism and Soviet cinema / Детство под прицелом времени: ребенок ХХ века в киноэстетике неореализма и советском кинематографе

The aim of the research is to identify the evolutionary scenario and the specifics of the transformation of the child's image in Russian art, primarily using Soviet cinema as an example, taking into account the experience of world art development and the connection between the "Sixtiers" and the aesthetics of neorealism. The article analyzes the causes and nature of significant changes in the image of the child in 20th-century art, considering large-scale social, cultural, and ideological transformations. One of the prominent movements that shaped original perceptions of childhood was Italian neorealism, in which the image of the "orphan child" became a symbol of the tragic consequences of historical cataclysms and socio-economic crises. Soviet art, from its very inception, actively used images of young characters. For instance, the films "Kino-glaz" (1924), "The Desperate Battalion" (1933), and "Golden Honey" (1928) presented children as active participants in social life. Children were often depicted as miniature adults, actively involved in labor and patriotic processes. The article shows how, in the 1960s, Russian art, influenced by the aesthetics of neorealism, began to re-evaluate the image of the child. The "Sixtiers" paid more attention to child psychology, themes of socialization, friendship, and growing up. The relevance of studying the image of the child in contemporary art is linked to the need to support and assist children in the process of socialization. Modern cinema about children and for children not only showcases young heroes but also transmits important moral and ethical lessons to them and to society as a whole. The research results have demonstrated that realistic art, which rejects fantastical elements, offers children an experience based on real-life situations, helping them develop critical thinking and emotional perception of the world.

Communication, Social Norms, and the Intention to Get Vaccinated Against Covid-19

Sarah Geber, Shirley S. Ho, Mengxue Ou

Social norms are a promising factor for pandemic control, as they motivate people to engage in preventive behaviours. However, little is known about the influence of perceived social norms on the intention to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and the role of communication in shaping such normative perceptions. Moreover, despite the pandemic’s global scale, a cross-cultural perspective is scant in research on Covid-19 preventive behaviour. The present study examined the relationships between communication (i.e., attention to mass media and social media), social norms (i.e., perceived norms in the population and personal environment), and people’s intention to get vaccinated against Covid-19 using a cross-national survey in Singapore (N = 998) and Switzerland (N = 1,022). Multigroup structural equation modelling revealed that attention to mass media was positively correlated with perceived norms in both countries, whereas attention to social media was correlated with normative perceptions only in Singapore. Normative perceptions regarding the population and personal environment were positively correlated with vaccination intention in Singapore. However, in Switzerland, only perceived norms in the personal environment were positively related to vaccination intention. The results are discussed against the background of both countries’ media systems and cultural values (i.e., individualism/collectivism) and are instructive for norms-based interventions in times of crises.

Karine Pedreira Padilha, Rafaela Vieira Bruno, Luana Cristina Farnesi

Methodological Challenges in Audiovisual Translation: Experimenting New Software for Multimodal Corpus-based Analysis

Dora Renna

Audiovisual translation has long struggled to strike a balance between corpus-based analysis of large amounts of text and the need to systematically integrate multimodality in its research scope, in order to fully acknowledge the complex nature of the audiovisual product. This paper aims to relate on the experimentation that is currently being conducted at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, with the collaboration of the University of Basel (Switzerland): using an existing software (created for pragmatics) for audiovisual translation. The main aim is to make sure this software is able to support the researcher in transcribing, annotating, adding metadata, managing and querying text and video files. The experimented software has never been used for parallel aligned audiovisual text so far. The contribution here presented first briefly describes a framework developed to analyse language variation and multimodality (with a focus on character design) in audiovisual translation, which was then immersed in the software. Subsequently, the software itself is described in detail, with specific attention to its potential and limits in the use within the field of Translation Studies and audiovisual translation. This is done by showing examples from a pilot study that belongs to a broader corpus currently under construction.

Libertad, justicia y tolerancia.

Abel Antonio Grijalva Verdugo, Rosario Olivia Izaguirre Fierro

A Gynocritical Study of The Color Purple by Alice Walker: A corpus-based Analysis of Adjectives

Zunaira Zafar , Haleema Majeed, Tehseen Zahra

From the beginning of the scholarly work on the women, most of the research have been carried out by opposite gender. Therefore, there have been limited work done to see how a woman portrays another woman in her writings. Moreover, there have been limited research conducted utilizing corpus tools for the analysis of gynocriticism. Thus, the present research aims to examine The Color Purple by Alice Walker by employing the corpus-based approach to investigate the representation of female character by the author in the novel. The positive or negative portrayal of women by the author in the novel was investigated through author’s usage of adjectives. Showalter's (2009) Theory of Gynocriticsim was used as a theoretical framework for the current research. Further, corpus-based methodology was employed to analyze how Alice Walker has portrayed the female character in her novel through the use of adjectives. An in-depth analysis has shown that Alice Walker has depicted woman as a helpless and sidelined being who can be turned as a resilient after suffering from frightful circumstances. The current research also opens new gates for the researchers to analyze the text from Gynocriticial perspective along with corpus techniques. Keywords: Adjectives; Corpus-based analysis; Gynocriticsim; The Color Purple; Woman

Politicized Science Communication: Predicting Scientists’ Acceptance of Overstatements by Their Knowledge Certainty, Media Perceptions, and Presumed Media Effects

Senja Post, Natalia Ramirez

Partisans in mediated conflicts usually perceive hostile news media, anticipate undesired media effects, and intend to engage discursively. It is hypothesized that hostile media perceptions also encourage polarizing communication. This is tested for scientists involved in a politicized science dispute. German climate scientists ( n = 131) firmly believe in anthropogenic global warming (AGW). Yet not all dismiss alternative hypotheses altogether. Results indicate that the more certain climate scientists are of AGW, the more they perceive that the news media downplay AGW and presume that the media nourish politicians’ doubts about it. This explains their justifications of overstatements of scientific findings in public.

Women’s movements to fight against impunity and forgetting: parallels and differences between Ciudad Juárez (Mexico) and Medellín (Colombia)

Javier Juárez Rodríguez, Nora Elena Botero Escobar

This paper is aimed at analyzing, from a comparative lens, the work developed by female social movements in Ciudad Juárez and Medellín. Despite their geographical separation, these two cities present remarkable similarities. Both municipalities have historically been characterized by a strong presence of structural violence against women. As shown in our analysis, the hegemonic patriarchal system prevailing in these two cities has led to a climate of widespread insecurity and has contributed to the perpetuation of feminicidal and misogynist violences. The sorority promoted by the women of Ciudad Juarez and Medellín has achieved major advances towards visualizing this reality, as well as in pushing the demand for justice through communicative and discursive strategies.

Digital Equality and the Uptake of Digital Applications among Seniors of Different Age

Bergström Annika

Ageing societies are facing challenges from the perspective of the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). There is an increase in online services relevant for the economic, political, cultural and private life. Those who participate more fully in a digitally mediated social life enjoy advantages over their digitally disadvantaged counterparts. Today’s digital divide is not first and foremost between pensioners and others, but between younger and older pensioners. Scholars identify the need for longitudinal research among younger and older seniors to understand the differences between more or less advantaged users. Based on longitudinal, representative surveys, the present study finds that there is a clear gap between younger and older seniors, and that it is closing only very slowly. Age and level of education are powerful explanatory factors whereas generational belonging and social capital contribute only to a limited extent to the understanding of Internet uptake among older adults.

From Mass to Social Media? Advancing Accounts of Social Change

S. Livingstone

I suggest that Social Media and Society will be substantially focused on questions of social change. Thus, I urge a historical perspective that avoids the temptation to consolidate the vision of mass media as concentrated, passively consumed, and unidirectional in influence by contrast with today’s supposedly more dispersed, participatory, globalized, peer-to-peer social media. I then observe that many diverse disciplines are interested in social media and express concern that while they have considerable expertise regarding the “social” and “society,” they too-often appear content to black-box “media.” This requires us to enter the fray to explain how the media part of the equation matters too. Since, I suggest, this matters whenever the material or symbolic dimensions of communication are important to or contested within the unfolding action, that is very often indeed. I then suggest some pressing questions to which I hope this journal will contribute. These concern (1) the wider ecology of communication within which, intriguingly, the dimensions that best characterize face-to-face communication are still used as the yardstick by which to judge social (and other) media; (2) the imperative to adopt a multi- and trans-cultural gaze as we grapple with (rather than presume we already know) the ethnographic diversity of social media “users” in all their complexity—including emerging social media literacy and its relation to social media legibility; and (3) larger questions of the theoretical framework by which to conceptualize power relations “at the interface”—of speakers and hearers, producers and audiences, or, today, affordances and users.

Media Literacy in Action? What Are We Teaching in Introductory College Media Studies Courses?

Seth Ashley

An introductory media studies course is a staple of post-secondary education. What are instructors teaching in this course, and to what extent are the principles of media literacy education being incorporated into this likely home? This article reports the findings of a small survey of instructors, who describe aspects of their course content and pedagogy. Media literacy appears to provide a basic foundation in most cases, though instructors struggle with structural constraints. Findings suggest that more focus should be placed on teaching the political and economic contexts of media, and that instructors should embrace active learning and creative engagement.

Hiper Metin ve Değişen Okuyucu Rolleri

Nancy G. Patterson
