Proposal for a Liberal Arts Course on AI and Bioethics : A Narrative Approach

Hyunshik Ju

This study aims to propose the content and teaching-learning methods for a liberal arts course titled AI and Bioethics, with a focus on the narrative approach. The research addresses two main questions: (1) What topics should be included in the curriculum for an AI and bioethics course? (2) How should the teaching-learning process for AI bioethics be structured? The findings suggest that the course content can be structured into five educational modules: (1) Theoretical foundations of AI bioethics, (2) Ethical issues in AI-based biomedicine, (3) Ethical issues in AI-based biotechnology, (4) The role of AI in human subject research and research ethics, (5) Laws and regulations related to AI bioethics. Additionally, the teaching-learning process can be designed in five stages: (1) Deliberation on relationships and contexts, (2) Deliberation on ethical principles, (3) Deliberation on emotions, (4) Deliberation on the continuity of ultimate responsibility and public accountability, (5) Deliberation involving peer feedback and self-reflection on the final decision.By linking bioethical dilemmas encountered in the AI era with real-world clinical experiences, this educational approach can effectively foster ethical reasoning, moral sensitivity, and the ability to make ethical decisions in practical contexts.

Training secondary English teachers to engage students in challenging and complex issues with journalistic strategies

Ed Madison, Ross C. Anderson, Tracy Bousselot et al.

ABSTRACT Classroom discussions of social issues, ranging from gun violence and climate change to race and gender identity, have become risky and politicised, dividing parents and educators along ideological lines and leading to censorship. Journalistic teaching and learning in secondary school English classes present one viable solution. However, few professional development opportunities exist to support teachers who lack formal professional or scholastic journalism training to integrate journalistic practices and disciplinary lens into general English language arts classrooms. This study explores teacher experiences and perspectives on student learning building on an innovative professional development and classroom curriculum. Results demonstrate strong evidence for the scalability of this networked learning professional development approach and for the teacher-generated innovations that enhanced student experiences. Teachers perceived substantial improvements in students’ core skills in journalistic learning, such as evaluating bias and credibility of sources, conducting interviews with community members, and writing. Results illustrate a timely and impactful approach to training English language arts teachers in a student-driven, culturally relevant, and practical approach to writing instruction.

A Study on the Development of University Liberal Arts Curriculum Convergence Standards

Hwasook Choi, Jihoe Park

The purpose of this study was to develop standards for the convergence of liberal arts curriculum as a way to effectively operate liberal arts education in universities. To this end, through literature analysis and two rounds of Delphi surveys, convergence standards were developed according to the categories of university liberal arts curriculum organization.</br>As a result of the study, four categories—goals, contents, methods, and evaluation—were established as key components of the university liberal arts curriculum. The convergence types of the liberal arts curriculum were divided into two types: intra-curricular and inter-curricular convergence, with specific standards set for each type. A total of 14 judgment questions were developed, consisting of 3 to 4 judgment questions based on the standards for each type. These judgment questions were designed as comprehensive inquiries that could represent each standard.</br>Through these research processes and results, this study is significant in that it established specific standards for the more systematic operation of convergence education in university liberal arts curricula. In particular, it is meaningful as it provides guidelines that can be applied to the design and operation of liberal arts education by developing specific standards for both intra- and inter-disciplinary convergence. It is believed that this can contribute to cultivating convergent thinking in liberal arts education and offer practical assistance in designing curricula that integrate various academic perspectives. Furthermore, it is expected that such an approach will enhance the consistency of curriculum operation by specifically proposing ways to promote convergent thinking throughout processes such as goal setting, content organization, teaching methods, and evaluation.

Characteristics and Challenges of AI Education in the Liberal Arts Curriculum of Domestic Universities : With Emphasis on the Linkage between the Primary and Secondary Education Curriculum and the Liberal Arts Curriculum of University in the Digital Transition Era

Sun Young Song

This paper aims to explore the characteristics and challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI) education in the liberal arts curriculum of domestic universities. The revision of the curriculum to strengthen digital literacy has been in the field of the liberal arts in major universities. However, universities haven’t been aligning their curriculum with the core competencies developed in earlier stages. This has resulted in a disconnect occurring between AI education at the primary/secondary level and the university level. This gap can lead to students struggling to advance in AI-related topics as they transition to higher education. The liberal arts education of universities does not consider or reflect any linkage with the coherent system of the national curriculum, such as the 2022 revised national curriculum, of primary and secondary schools, which prevents the progress of students’ learning agency. For example, universities should take steps to open and run AI-related courses, regardless of government-supported projects, such as software (SW)-centered university projects. In fact, these project-based courses have not successfully addressed the need for a comprehensive AI and digital literacy education within the liberal arts. This paper, therefore, makes the following suggestions. Firstly, the liberal arts curriculum for AI education should restore its essence of humanity, preparing students to critically assess both the benefits and risks of AI in experiencing the digital transition. Secondly, universities should open and support AI-related courses in the liberal arts, ensuring that lecturers and professors receive the necessary resources to teach comprehensive AI education effectively.

Patriarchal hegemony of Javanese kings power in Wulang Putri text

Yusro Edy Nugroho, Sahid Teguh Widodo, Wasino et al.

Colonialism has turned the gender relations in Java into something considerably complex. Through marriage, women were positioned to promote the harmonization of strategic politics of kingdoms. Such a condition results in many studies on several Javanese literary works of Wulang Putri. This research investigates the socio- historical background of the writing of Wulang Putri in the context of the hegemony of Javanese kingdom power. A sociological, literary work in the Gramscian hegemony theory was applied in this study. All data comprised nine literary works of Wulang Putri written in the nineteenth century. The result showed the effect of the literary works in instilling the political influence of the author through a cultural discourse. Such is seen in the post-Java War demilitarization (1825–1830) to maintain the integrity of the kingdom. In addition, there are still traces of efforts to unite the Mataram dynasty through marriages between princes and princesses in four palaces.

Dyson Brownian motion and random matrix dynamics of weight matrices during learning

Gert Aarts, Ouraman Hajizadeh, Biagio Lucini et al.

During training, weight matrices in machine learning architectures are updated using stochastic gradient descent or variations thereof. In this contribution we employ concepts of random matrix theory to analyse the resulting stochastic matrix dynamics. We first demonstrate that the dynamics can generically be described using Dyson Brownian motion, leading to e.g. eigenvalue repulsion. The level of stochasticity is shown to depend on the ratio of the learning rate and the mini-batch size, explaining the empirically observed linear scaling rule. We verify this linear scaling in the restricted Boltzmann machine. Subsequently we study weight matrix dynamics in transformers (a nano-GPT), following the evolution from a Marchenko-Pastur distribution for eigenvalues at initialisation to a combination with additional structure at the end of learning.

Lupi, Danilo

This paper investigates for the first time the restoration work carried out on the refectory of the monastery of San Michele in Bosco in Bologna, which was supervised by Alfonso Rubbiani between 1892 and 1895. In spite of the vast literature on the ‘restorer’, this work has so far been scarcely considered both because of the chronology of the building (mid-16th century) as well as because it did not entail radical changes. Indeed, the limited size of the room and the numerous documentary traces – carefully tracked by Rubbiani and his patron, the lawyer Giuseppe Bacchelli – were addressing the operation philologically. The discovery of unpublished archival evidence contributed to a more appropriate understanding of the overall work; in particular, it is possible to note how the initial intentions of the architect and the commissioner, which were based on erudite investigations that involved intellectuals and politicians of the time, did not, unfortunately, come to fruition.

Przestępstwa i opłaty administracyjne we wsiach prawa wołoskiego starostwa samborskiego w Inwentarzu…

Holomorphic General Coordinate Invariant Modified Measure Gravitational Theory

Eduardo Guendelman

Complexifying space time has many interesting applications, from the construction of higher dimensional unification, to provide a useful framework for quantum gravity and to better define some local symmetries that suffer singularities in real space time. In this context here spacetime is extended to complex spacetime and standard general coordinate invariance is also extended to complex holomorphic general coordinate transformations. This is possible by introducing a non Riemannian Measure of integration, which transforms avoiding non holomorphic behavior . Instead the measure transforms according to the inverse of the jacobian of the coordinate transformation and avoids the traditional square root of the determinant of the metric $\sqrt{-g}$. which is not globally holomorphic , or the determinant of the vierbein which is sensitive to the vierbein orientations and not invariant under local lorentz transformations with negative determinants. A contribution to the cosmological term appears as an integration constant in the equations of motion. A proposed action for Finsler geometry, which involves $-g$ rather than $\sqrt{-g}$ will also constitute an example of a Holomorphic General Coordinate Invariant Modified Measure Gravitational Theory.

Analysis of Mythological Elements in the Seven Houses of the Narrators' Scroll and Its Comparison with the Shahnameh

Samanehsadat Shahid Hoseini, Hasanali Abaepour Esfadan, Vahid Rooyani

Narrative scrolls are one of the very rich sources of Iranian culture and literature, which in the form of mythological and epic stories contain mythical concepts, forgotten customs, linguistic points, and so on. In the narration scrolls, due to the emphasis on the stories of the heroes of Sistan, there is usually no mention of Esfandiar Haft Khan, but instead of Rostam Haft Khan, two Haft Khans are also mentioned for his descendants, Faramarz and Jahanbakhsh, which is remarkable. Researchers in the present study are looking for answers to the following questions: First, are Haft Khan Faramarz and Jahanbakhsh based on the model of Haft Khan Rostam and Esfandiar? And secondly, what are the mythological points in these seven readers that the researchers were unaware of? The results show that Faramarz and Jahanbakhsh's Haft Khans are based on the pattern of Rostam and Esfandiar Haft Khans, and mythological points such as the existence of the "eagle" as a Jupiter and the presence of a wolf representing the soldier in the Mehr ritual indicate the rich mythological background of these seven Khans. But in addition to mythological issues, scrolls can also be examined from the perspective of storytelling, especially the ancient scroll of Ferdowsi Shahnameh (Sedaghatnejad) pays more attention to characterization and causal relations and details of the story and the image of mental and physical states.

Development of “Digital Humanities” as a Liberal Arts Class at University

Ki-In Chong, Sang woo Jeong

The purpose of this study is to explore the curriculum and educational contents of four Korean universities that are educating or plan to educate their students in the Digital Humanities, as well as to find and develop Digital Humanities classes suitable for one semester within their liberal arts education classes. As a result of the survey, the four universities were classified according to the affiliation of the students’ subject at each school and the level of programming related to data processing. A and B universities’ Digital Humanities major students were predominantly from liberal arts majors, C universities students consisted both of liberal arts and science and engineering majors, and D universities students’ majors were science and engineering. Universities from group A used basic Google apps and Excel, but D universities used higher-level programming languages. However, Digital Humanities classes at these universities are based on a three-step course: First, education involving basic concepts for Digital Humanities and basic tools for data analysis. Second, search for applicability to Digital Humanities through existing majors. Third, the practical application and creation of the Digital Humanities project. Accordingly, this study sought ways to effectively convey this three-step process in the short period of one semester and devised a detailed lecture outline.

Ódry Árpád színészetéről

Dorka Porogi

Árpád Ódry’s Art of Performance In 1896 the second-year academy student Árpád Ódry was already mentioned by critics as possessing the rare talent of being “able to speak”. The young journalist who first recognizes Ódry’s talent, Sándor Hevesi, will later become the director of the National Theatre. My research focuses on how Ódry’s methods represented an acting ideal and a new school at the beginning of the 20th century by introducing natural (but not naturalistic) performance methods. These methods have proved to have a lasting effect until the present. Ódry’s natural performance methods, however, can only be achieved with the special techniques of the acting profession.

Intrinsic Harmonic Spaces: A Solution to the Ancient Problem of Perfect Tuning

Diederik Aerts

In this article we solve this ancient problem of perfect tuning in all keys and present a system were all harmonies are conserved at once. It will become clear, when we expose our solution, why this solution could not be found in the way in which earlier on musicians and scientist have been approaching the problem. We follow indeed a different approach. We first construct a mathematical representation of the complete harmony by means of a vector space, where the different tones are represented in complete harmonic way for all keys at once. One of the essential differences with earlier systems is that tones will no longer be ordered within an octave, and we find the octave-like ordering back as a projection of our system. But it is exactly by this projection procedure that the possibility to create a harmonic system for all keys at once is lost. So we see why the old way of ordering tones within an octave could not lead to a solution of the problem. We indicate in which way a real musical instrument could be built that realizes our harmonic scheme. Because tones are no longer ordered within an octave such a musical instrument will be rather unconventional. It is however a physically realizable musical instrument, at least for the Pythagorean harmony. We also indicate how perfect harmonies of every dimension could be realized by computers.
