Determinants of youth unemployment in Barranquilla, Colombia: a multi-method analysis of education, work experience, and socioeconomic factors

Mario de la Puente, Jose Torres, Heidy Rico

This study examines the complex factors influencing youth unemployment in Barranquilla, Colombia, focusing on the roles of education, work experience, and socioeconomic background. Employing a multi-method approach combining logistic regression, chi-square tests, ANOVA, and Random Forest analysis, the research analyzes data from 2,250 young adults aged 18–28. Results show postgraduate education reduces unemployment odds by 70.92%, while each month of work experience decreases unemployment odds by 2.32%. Youths from lower socioeconomic strata face unemployment rates of 28.45% compared to 18.76% in higher strata. The Random Forest model identifies critical threshold points where education and experience yield maximum benefits. Policy implications include targeting work experience programmes to the 7–18-month period when benefits accelerate, focusing education support on completion thresholds, and combining education access with work opportunities for lower-income youth. The study advances youth unemployment research by quantifying precise threshold effects, documenting monthly experience impacts.

Low-cost fiber-based electrochemical sensor for quantification of acetaminophen in human breast milk

Mona A. Mohamed, Melissa Banks, Sina Khazaee Nejad et al.

Abstract Acetaminophen is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States. The transfer of drugs to breast milk poses risks to infants, yet dosing guidelines are based on limited data from small studies. Currently, drug levels in milk are simply estimated through invasive blood draws. We present a new low-cost, textile-based electrochemical sensor for detecting acetaminophen at the point of use in breast milk. An embroidered conductive yarn (steel and silver) is used, which eliminates the need for complex microfabrication processes. A gold-nanoparticle-doped carbon ink-modified steel yarn serves as the working electrode, with pristine steel and silver yarns as counter and reference electrodes, respectively. Using square wave voltammetry, the sensor achieves a linear detection range of 9.9–166.4 μM in undiluted breast milk, with a limit of detection of 1.15 μM. This platform provides a simple and accessible alternative for drug monitoring

Screening pasts for healthy futures: Egg donation and the making of the ‘healthy’ baby in Spanish fertility clinics

Laura Perler

What kind of life is considered reproducible in a fertility clinic? What is the specific understanding of technology and progress and what does this have to do with the desirability of certain bodies? What does egg donation have to do with selection? These are the guiding questions of this article, in which I explore the idea of the ‘healthy’ baby in third-party reproduction in Spain. Based on my ethnographic fieldwork in a fertility clinic in Valencia, I analyse the clinical practices through which ‘healthy’ babies are produced. I argue that a technophilic and ableist vision of the future is at the centre of this idea of a ‘healthy’ child. Furthermore, I suggest that the use of genetic selection techniques is normalised through narratives of progress and that the power structures of a transnational bioeconomy are (re)produced as a result. Finally, I show that the practice of egg donation in Spain must be understood not only as assisted but also as selective reproduction.

Libertad Fresia Figueroa Ezzatti

Dowries, resource allocation, and poverty

Rossella Calvi, Ajinkya Keskar

We study the relationship between dowries – wealth transfers from the bride’s family to the groom or his family at the time of marriage – and individual-level poverty in rural India. Based on the estimates of a collective household model, we show that the share of household consumption expenditure allocated to a woman is strongly associated with the dowry she paid at the time of her marriage. We compute poverty rates separately for women and men and find that women’s poverty relative to men decreases with dowry. Moreover, women who paid dowries are less likely to be poor relative to women who did not, even when their households’ consumption expenditures are the same. Our counterfactual policy analysis indicates that abolishing or reducing dowries (through anti-dowry laws or taxes, for example) may have the unintended effect of aggravating intra-household inequality and increasing women’s risk of living in poverty after marriage.

The Implementation of Indonesian National Health Insurance Programme: How Satisfiedwere the Insured Participants and The Healthcare Providers?

Eva Yusuf, Irma Awwaliyah

This study examined how satisfied the insured participants and the healthcare providers were with the services provided by the BPJS Health. The study took place in 24 cities/districts in Indonesia. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews with 17,820 insured participants and 1,170 healthcare providers. The survey revealed that the participantswere satisfied with the services they had obtained from the providers. However, the participants at the primary healthcare facilities hada significantly lower satisfaction level than those at the secondary healthcare facilities. Better facilities and medical equipment, better services from medics and paramedics, better drugs availability and quality, along with assurance in obtaining a proper and timeline treatment, all contributed to the higher satisfaction level. Policy makers need to consider making an improvement on the facilities and service qualities at the primary healthcare facilities in order to enhance the participants’ trust. Otherwise, the referral system implementation under the NHI system might not be effectively implemented as participants prefer to get a treatment from secondary healthcare facilities. This study suggests that empathy attributes are the key factor in building satisfaction level. Special attentions need to be given on the “human” aspect of the service providers.

«We have ceased to be a nation in retreat».

Lidia De Michelis

This essay explores Margaret Thatcher’s political agency and leadership style in terms of her reliance on discursive and media strategies which thrived on the “confusion” of gender stereotypes and her ability to play with multiple, long-established archetypes of women in power, characterized by violent and aggressive femininity. Thatcher’s frequent self-projection as a “masculine” character, the “honorary man” of British politics, and her special grip on British public opinion and fantasies, were never disjointed from her ability to don, exploit, subvert and redirect “motherly’ (or at least “womanly”) performances at will, in order to serve her political agenda. Focusing on her strategic deployment of a rhetoric and discourses of aggression, divisiveness, conflict and war, the essay highlights Thatcher’s ability to re-create and keep alive the idea of a national community always under siege, where extraordinary economic, disciplinary and defence measure were required in order to resist and overcome domestic and foreign “enemies”. The Falklands War will be taken as case study, for it provides an outstanding example of Thatcher’s powerful revision of female political authority against the backdrop of the conventionally masculine, heroic imaginary of war. Her masterly and coterminous performances as war leader and “super-mother” of the nation allowed for a complex and hybrid self-projection which still acts as an empowering model whose disciplinary subtext entails a nostalgic investment in imperial national history.

Arus Utama Perdebatan Hukum Perkawinan Beda Agama

Khamami Zada

<p>Abstract: Mapping the Mainstreaming Debate Regarding to Interfaith Marriage Law. This article intends to observe the linkage of the implementation of interfaith marriage law  with the opinion of  Islamic jurists’ and to political and social change in a country. Interfaith marriage law—as occurred in (former) North Yemen, Jordan, Algeria, and Iraq—is not influenced by the Islamic school of thought of the majority population. In contrary, interfaith marriage in the aforementioned states is not inline with the mainstream opinion of islamic jurists that forbidding softly (makrūh) Muslim man to marry a woman of Ahl al-Kitāb. The regulation is obviously influenced by  the rise of Islamism, such as the Muslim brotherhood in Jordan, Front Islamic Salvation in Algeria, and the growing influence of Shiite movements in Iraq and North Yemen in establishing religious conservatism in matters of interfaith marriage. Thus, it can be understood why those countries prefer to refer  text of the Quran that regulate interfaith marriage law.</p><p>Keywords: interfaith marriage law, islamic family law, Ahl al-Kitāb</p><p>Abstrak: Arus Utama Perdebatan Hukum Perkawinan Beda Agama.

ABSTRACT The main topic of this article is the analysis of the particular work relationship that is established between women in the case of domestic paid work. This relationship between employees and employers is more than work, but less than employment. Domestic paid work generates a situation of asymmetrical dependence between women that represents a perfect scenario to observe how inequalities derived from sexual division of work (inter gender inequalities) are crossed by those of class and ethnic group (intra gender inequalities) in a context of global capitalism. Key words: Domestic service , domestic work, reconciliation of work and family life, gender, unequality, immigration.

Despatologização do gênero: a politização das identidades abjetas Depathologization of the genre: the politicization of abject identities

Neste artigo, discutiremos algumas iniciativas dessa campanha, analisaremos a ideologia de gênero presente no DSM e no CID, que incorporam o gênero como uma categoria diagnóstica, e, por fim, apresentaremos argumentos pelo fim do diagnóstico de gênero.<br>Despite the social and political changes in respect of transsexualities and tranvestilities, they are still considered by the APA (American Psychiatric Association) and by the WHO (World Health Organization) as mental disorders. These organizations will disclose in 2013 the new versions of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - APA) and the ICD (International Code of Illness-WHO). This has mobilized trans activists claiming the withdrawal of transsexuality from the list of diseases considered as mental disorders. The Stop Trans Pathologization (Stop Pathologizing!) has become a global campaign, reaching 29 countries by early 2012. In this article, we will discuss some initiatives within this campaign and review the gender ideology present in the DSM and the ICD which incorporate the genre as a diagnostic category.
