The Interpretation of Dreams

J. Diggle

THE translation of the eighth German edition of Freud's magnum opus is in many ways an improvement on the first. There are many small alterations in the actual translation, but the general plan of the work is unaltered. The difference between this edition and previous editions is small. In the bibliography there are very few references of post-War date; so much has been written in the post-War period that we think this might well have been brought right up to date. The Interpretation of Dreams.By Prof. Sigmund Freud. Authorised translation by Dr. A. A. Brill. Completely revised edition. Pp. 600. (London: George Allen and Unwin, Ltd., 1932.) 18s. net.

Partitioning and Self-organization of Distributed Generation in Large Distribution Networks

Badr Al Faiya, Stephen McArthur, Ivana Kockar

Distribution networks will experience more installations of distributed generation (DG) that is unpredictable and stochastic in nature. Greater distributed control and intelligence will allow challenges such as voltage control to be handled effectively. The partitioning of power networks into smaller clusters provides a method to split the control problem into manageable sub-problems. This paper presents a community detection-based partitioning technique for distribution networks considering local DGs, allowing them to be grouped and controlled in a distributed manner by using local signals and measurements. This method also allows each community to control the voltage using only neighboring DGs, and for each community to self-organize to reflect varying DG conditions and to maintain stable control. Simulations demonstrate that the partitioning of the large distribution network is effective, and each community is able to self-organize and to regulate the voltage independently using only its local DGs.

Isomorphism Classes of Generating Sets

Tom Benhamou, James Cummings, Gabriel Goldberg et al.

We introduce a new class of ultrafilters which generalizes the well-known class of simple $P$-point ultrafilters. We prove that for any well-founded $σ$-directed partial order $\mathbb{D}$ there is a mild forcing extension where there is an ultrafilter $U$ on $ω$ with a base $\mathcal{B}$ such that $(\mathcal{B},\supseteq^*)\cong \mathbb{D}$. On a measurable cardinal we prove a similar result: relative to a supercompact cardinal, it is consistent that $κ$ is supercompact, and for a $κ^+$-directed well-founded poset $\mathbb{D}$, there is a ${<}κ$-directed closed $κ^+$-cc forcing extension where there is a \emph{normal} ultrafilter $U$ on $κ$ with a base $\mathcal{B}$ such that $(\mathcal{B},\supseteq^*)\cong \mathbb{D}$. These are optimal results in the class of $P$-points and realize every potential structure of a $P$-point. We apply our constructions to obtain ultrafilters with controlled Tukey-type, in particular, an ultrafilter with non-convex Tukey and depth spectra is presented, answering questions from \cite{Benhamou_2024}. Our construction also provides new models where $\mathfrak{u}_κ<2^κ$, answering questions from \cite{Benhamou_Goldberg2025}.

Embedding Reliability Verification Constraints into Generation Expansion Planning

Peng Liu, Lian Cheng, Benjamin P. Omell et al.

Generation planning approaches face challenges in managing the incompatible mathematical structures between stochastic production simulations for reliability assessment and optimization models for generation planning, which hinders the integration of reliability constraints. This study proposes an approach to embedding reliability verification constraints into generation expansion planning by leveraging a weighted oblique decision tree (WODT) technique. For each planning year, a generation mix dataset, labeled with reliability assessment simulations, is generated. An WODT model is trained using this dataset. Reliability-feasible regions are extracted via depth-first search technique and formulated as disjunctive constraints. These constraints are then transformed into mixed-integer linear form using a convex hull modeling technique and embedded into a unit commitment-integrated generation expansion planning model. The proposed approach is validated through a long-term generation planning case study for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region, demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving reliable and optimal planning solutions.

Generating temporal networks with the Ascona model

Samuel Koovely

We introduce a queueing-based sampling framework for continuous-time temporal networks. We focus on a Markovian parametrization in which link start times follow a homogeneous Poisson process and link durations are exponentially distributed. We derive stochastic properties of the resulting link streams and exploit them to generate synthetic temporal networks with controllable smoothness and prescribed event patterns, relevant for the validation and interpretation of methods for community, scale, change-point, and periodicity detection. By coupling this temporal mechanism with block-structured endpoint distributions, we obtain a continuous-time analogue of stochastic block models. We also discuss extensions of the framework, including discrete-time and instantaneous-contact limits.

Revisiting the Hermeneutic Project of the Fragment in its Exigency for a Digital Paradigm of Publication

Silvia M Stoyanova

A century ago, Walter Benjamin defined the mode of production of scholarly books as “an outdated mediation between two different filing systems”—the card index of the researcher who wrote it and that of the scholar studying it. The discursive mediation of the codex, in his opinion, no longer created any significant value, “for everything that matters” can be found in the author’s research archive. I explore the implications of this statement through the practices of the fragment in modernity, among which the research archives and notebooks of Benjamin, Giacomo Leopardi, Paul Valéry, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Joseph Joubert, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Friedrich Schlegel, and Novalis, and suggest that the hermeneutic project of the fragment genre could constructively inform recent initiatives towards processual, slow, and reproducible scholarship, as well as the design of digital editing and authoring workspaces. I juxtapose the compositional processes and editorial challenges of the selected fragment collections and explore their exigency for a digital publication platform that would empower their ethical epistemology, activate their relational networks, articulate their processual form, and support their aspiration towards collaborative knowledge-making. I propose that the design of such digital workspace should not only afford access to the contents of these intellectual projects but also enable the performative engagement with their methodology. The dialectical reception between the epistemic practices of the fragment genre and the theoretical visions for the future of the academic book holds promise for engendering multimodal, process-oriented, performative, and collaborative scholarly discourse.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.54167/tch.v19i1.1754

Applications of Tao General Difference in Discrete Domain

Linmi Tao, Ruiyang Liu, Donglai Tao et al.

Numerical difference computation is one of the cores and indispensable in the modern digital era. Tao general difference (TGD) is a novel theory and approach to difference computation for discrete sequences and arrays in multidimensional space. Built on the solid theoretical foundation of the general difference in a finite interval, the TGD operators demonstrate exceptional signal processing capabilities in real-world applications. A novel smoothness property of a sequence is defined on the first- and second TGD. This property is used to denoise one-dimensional signals, where the noise is the non-smooth points in the sequence. Meanwhile, the center of the gradient in a finite interval can be accurately location via TGD calculation. This solves a traditional challenge in computer vision, which is the precise localization of image edges with noise robustness. Furthermore, the power of TGD operators extends to spatio-temporal edge detection in three-dimensional arrays, enabling the identification of kinetic edges in video data. These diverse applications highlight the properties of TGD in discrete domain and the significant promise of TGD for the computation across signal processing, image analysis, and video analytic.

Elevating Accuracy: Enhanced Feature Selection Methods for Type 2 Diabetes Prediction

Ghazaleh Kakavand Teimoory , MohammadReza Keyvanpour

Diabetes, a metabolic disorder, poses significant annual risks due to various factors, requiring effective management strategies to prevent life-threatening complications. Classified into Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational diabetes, its impact spans diverse demographics, with Type 2 diabetes being particularly concerning due to cellular insulin deficiencies. Early prediction is crucial for intervention and complication prevention. While machine learning and artificial intelligence show promise in predictive modeling for diabetes, challenges in interpreting models hinder widespread adoption among physicians and patients. The complexity of these models often raises doubts about their reliability and practical utility in clinical settings. Addressing interpretability challenges is crucial to fully harnessing predictive analytics in diabetes management, leading to improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare burdens. Previous research has utilized various algorithms like Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machines (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and decision trees for patient classification. In this study using the Pima dataset, we applied a preprocessing technique that utilized the most important features identified by the Random Forest algorithm and we used an ensemble method combining the SVM algorithm and Naïve Bayes for the model. In the first section of the proposed method, we provided explanations regarding the dataset. In the second section, we elucidated all preprocessing steps applied to this dataset, and in the third section, we evaluated the model using the selected algorithm under investigation. The proposed model, after going through the various stages, was able to report an accuracy of 81.82%, a precision of 82.34%, an AUC of 88.19% and a Recall of 70.68%. Considering the review of similar studies, an improvement of 3.99% in accuracy demonstrates a significant advancement that highlights the benefits of traditional methods in disease prediction. These findings suggest the potential use of web-based applications to encourage both physicians and patients in diabetes prediction efforts.

Managing IoT and Mass Communication in 6G: Strategies for Low Latency Real-Time Applications through Proximity-Based Request Handling

Fariborz Rasouli

The anticipated integration of 6G technology within the telecommunications sector is poised to significantly enhance communication capabilities in the forthcoming years. The proliferation of 6G within Etisalat's infrastructure is expected to concurrently drive the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), facilitating its operation across a diverse array of mobile and stationary devices. Within the IoT domain, particularly under the 6G framework, certain applications necessitate real-time operation and thus warrant prioritization over others in terms of communication and data transmission. The strategic clustering of users, based on assigned weight factors, can bolster the prioritization process, thereby optimizing the efficiency of real-time applications. This paper delineates methodologies for expediting user connectivity—termed 'real-time'—and delineates them from non-time-critical applications. The implementation of Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) is proposed as a viable strategy for clustering IoT devices, thereby managing the increased volume of smaller, more granular data packets characteristic of 6G networks. Utilizing DBSCAN clustering facilitates the preemptive identification of potential user congestion and traffic, enabling the deployment of the outlined strategies to mitigate service degradation and maintain data transfer rates. This research explores the formulation of a prioritized scheduling system for requests, wherein, as per the DBSCAN algorithm, real-time applications are accorded elevated execution precedence.

Weighted surface algebras: general version. Corrigendum

Karin Erdmann, Andrzej Skowroński

In [arXiv:1902.04063] we generalize the original definition of weighted surface algebras in [arXiv:1703.02346] by allowing the possibility that arrows might not be part of the Gabriel quiver, which gives a much larger class of algebras. This means that the zero relations need modification, to make sure that the algebras are symmetric, and of the appropriate dimension. We found recently that we had missed one necessary modification for the zero relations. Here we give the correct definition, and revise the parts of [arXiv:1902.04063] which are affected by this modification.

Michael Grote, Hege Charlotte Faber
