Ecological footprint analysis as a tool for advancing sustainable development goals (SDGs): Evidence from China

Jie Wu, Haozhe Yu, Ning Cao et al.

The growing environmental pressures linked to resource consumption and economic expansion in China necessitate a more integrated approach to sustainable development. This study explores the critical role of Ecological Footprint Analysis in aligning China’s development trajectory with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by investigating the dynamic relationships between renewable energy consumption (REC), CO2 emissions, ecological footprint growth (EFG), governance effectiveness (GE), urbanization (UP), population growth (PG), and GDP per capita (GDPPC). Using time series data from 1995 to 2023, the study applies a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) analysis, and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) to capture both long-term equilibrium and short-run dynamics. The findings reveal that ecological footprint growth significantly drives renewable energy adoption as environmental stress increases; governance effectiveness positively influences renewable energy use but with limited strength in mitigating emissions; GDP per capita initially raises CO2 emissions, validating the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis; and urbanization, while contributing to short-term emissions, gradually promotes renewable energy transitions through infrastructure modernization. Policy implications underscore the urgent need for China to integrate circular economy practices, green urban planning, and stronger governance frameworks to effectively decouple economic growth from ecological degradation and achieve long-term sustainability goals.

Circular economy and community participation in Chao Phraya river Conservation: Evidence from Thai urban riverside communities

Wanjai Lamprom, Surasak Jotaworn, Nuttakit Iamsomboon et al.

The conservation of the Chao Phraya River faces significant challenges, including environmental degradation, limited community participation, and insufficient integration of circular economy principles. This study aims to identify factors influencing pro-environmental behaviors and develop guidelines for enhancing community participation in river conservation. A quantitative cross-sectional approach was employed, collecting data from 402 respondents in Ang Thong Province through structured questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to analyze relationships between socio-economic factors, knowledge, opinions, awareness, and waste management behaviors. The results revealed a strong correlation between knowledge of circular economy principles and effective waste management behaviors (r = 0.620). In addition, high awareness, gaps in practical implementation, particularly in waste donation and recycling, were observed. By addressing these challenges, this research offers actionable recommendations, including targeted education campaigns, incentive structures, and policy integration. The study contributes to the understanding of how socio-economic and cognitive factors drive pro-environmental behaviors, while practically, it provides a framework for sustainable conservation strategies applied to urban riverside communities.

High Uniformity GaN Micro-pyramids and Platelets by Selective Area Growth

Changhao Li, Vitaly Z. Zubialevich, Peter J. Parbrook et al.

The development of uniform GaN micro-pyramids and platelets via selective area growth is a critical step toward advancing III-nitride device technologies, particularly for micro-light-emitting diode applications. This work investigates the origins of morphological non-uniformity in micro-pyramids and micro-platelets grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). We observe that a direct one-step growth approach leads to significant growth rate inhomogeneity across arrays. To shed light on this issue, we examine the mechanisms driving non-uniformity and explore process modifications aimed at mitigating these effects. Building on these insights, we propose a controlled multi-step growth strategy that combines sequen-tial growth and thermal treatment phases. This approach is demonstrated to enhance surface morphology and structural regularity. The work contributes to the broader objective of enabling scalable, high-precision GaN microstructure fabrication for next-generation optoelectronic applications.

Elasticity of substitution and general model of economic growth

Constantin Chilarescu

The main purpose of this paper is to generalize some recent results obtained by Chilarescu and Manuel Gomez. Essentially, we are trying to study the effect of elasticity of substitution on the parameters of economic growth, based on its two possible values - lower and higher than one. We show that a higher elasticity of substitution increases per capita income, the relative share of physical capital, the common growth rate and the share of human capital allocated to the production sector, and this property is not affected by the position of the elasticity of substitution - below or above one.

Hierarchical Vision-Language Planning for Multi-Step Humanoid Manipulation

André Schakkal, Ben Zandonati, Zhutian Yang et al.

Enabling humanoid robots to reliably execute complex multi-step manipulation tasks is crucial for their effective deployment in industrial and household environments. This paper presents a hierarchical planning and control framework designed to achieve reliable multi-step humanoid manipulation. The proposed system comprises three layers: (1) a low-level RL-based controller responsible for tracking whole-body motion targets; (2) a mid-level set of skill policies trained via imitation learning that produce motion targets for different steps of a task; and (3) a high-level vision-language planning module that determines which skills should be executed and also monitors their completion in real-time using pretrained vision-language models (VLMs). Experimental validation is performed on a Unitree G1 humanoid robot executing a non-prehensile pick-and-place task. Over 40 real-world trials, the hierarchical system achieved a 73% success rate in completing the full manipulation sequence. These experiments confirm the feasibility of the proposed hierarchical system, highlighting the benefits of VLM-based skill planning and monitoring for multi-step manipulation scenarios. See https://vlp-humanoid.github.io/ for video demonstrations of the policy rollout.

Performance of MPPT Charge Controller Under Moderate - to High - Temperature Field Condition

Hassan Adamu, Francis Njoka, Gideon Kidegho

Owing to the effect of temperature on the maximum power point of photovoltaic modules, the anticipated benefits of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) charge controller are also greatly affected under high-temperature environments. This paper presents experimental study results based on the investigations of the effect of high cell temperatures on the performance of MPPT charge controllers. The study was carried out over three months at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya under moderate and high temperature conditions. The experiments are carried out using two market-ready MPPT charge controllers and a normal pulse-width modulation (PWM) charge controller as the reference. The study establishes that below 50 °C, the MPPT charge controller exhibits significant advantages over its counterpart with about 24% - 29%, additional energy gain. However, at high cell temperatures, the MPPT charge controller loses its added advantage over the PWM charge controller and its performance benefits drop from an average of 28% to 0.2%. This demonstrates that an ordinary PWM charge controller would achieve the same yields under high-temperature conditions and at an even lower premium.

An overview of recent developments in China’s metro systems

D. Lin, J. Nelson, M. Beecroft et al.

Abstract Along with rapid urbanisation and economic growth, massive development of transport infrastructure has been seen in China, facilitating overall economic development and improved quality of life. Metro is a common form of high-capacity public transport and urban underground space (UUS) utilisation in megacities. On many occasions, for social, environmental, economic and functional considerations a metro system is the optimal choice. China has seen remarkably rapid development of metro systems during the past two decades and is now leading the world with regard to the speed and scale of planning and construction of metro systems. This paper investigates recent developments in metro systems in mainland China, including the history of metro development, metro scale (measured by metro length, number of metro lines, number of metro stations, and metro patronage) and the relationships among three factors: economic capabilities, resident populations and administrative divisions of cities. The results show that China’s cities with larger resident populations tend to develop larger-scale metro systems that are longer, with more metro lines and stations. With a higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a metro city in China tends to develop longer metro systems, and more extensive metro systems with more lines and more stations, carry more passengers. Cities at higher administrative levels, with greater economic strengths and larger populations, are more likely to develop more extensive metro networks.

The Role of Rural Tourism in Strengthening the Sustainability of Rural Areas: The Case of Zlakusa Village

N. Ćurčić, Andrijana Mirković Svitlica, J. Brankov et al.

The strategic planning of rural development is focused on both economic growth and sustainable development. Sustainable rural development is essential for conserving and improving resources, while economic growth contributes to a better standard of living. The aim of the research is to determine, using the participatory rural appraisal (PRA) methodology on the example of the village of Zlakusa, the economic activities developed in the village, the importance of rural tourism, and the scope of sustainable development taken into account in rural development. The results of the research show that the success of the rural community depends on: diversification of economic activities, which is accompanied by cohesion of the population through association and organization; organized activities aimed at local or republican authorities; activation of human and social capital; and initiating activities involving marginalized groups. Educating the population outside formal education improves the sustainable and economic development of the village and enables rural tourism to become an important part of economic activities and a channel for the commercialization of natural and cultural contents.

Circular cities: exploring local government strategies to facilitate a circular economy

Kathleen Bolger, A. Doyon

ABSTRACT Cities are growing rapidly, and the systems of production and consumption that support this growth are contributing to the depletion of natural resources and pollution of the environment. The circular economy model offers an alternative to the predominant take-make-dispose economic system. Local municipalities are seen to have the capacity to encourage sustainable development of the built environment. This paper aims to explore the role of strategic planning in facilitating a circular economy in urban settings. In particular, this research asks: How are local governments facilitating circular economy initiatives through strategic planning? What are the opportunities and barriers when applying circular economy principles through local strategic planning? The research approach used for this paper is a comparative case study of two international municipalities: the City of Melbourne, Australia and the City of Malmö, Sweden. Current strategic planning practice was examined with a focus on circular economy themes. The findings reveal that strategic urban planning can translate circular economy objectives into actions within specific urban areas, although barriers still exist to fully integrating the circular economy model.

On Guiding Search in HTN Temporal Planning with non Temporal Heuristics

Nicolas Cavrel, Damien Pellier, Humbert Fiorino

The Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) formalism is used to express a wide variety of planning problems as task decompositions, and many techniques have been proposed to solve them. However, few works have been done on temporal HTN. This is partly due to the lack of a formal and consensual definition of what a temporal hierarchical planning problem is as well as the difficulty to develop heuristics in this context. In response to these inconveniences, we propose in this paper a new general POCL (Partial Order Causal Link) approach to represent and solve a temporal HTN problem by using existing heuristics developed to solve non temporal problems. We show experimentally that this approach is performant and can outperform the existing ones.

Long-term evolution of energy and electricity demand forecasting: The case of Ethiopia

Dawit Gebremeskel, E. Ahlgren, G. B. Beyene

Abstract Long-term energy demand forecasting is crucial for any country, in particular for developing countries with rapid developments of energy needs. This study focuses on Ethiopia, a country with a highly increasing energy demand resulting mainly from the currently low share of electricity access, rapid development of industrial parks, extensive expansion of the railway network, extensive irrigation schemes for agriculture, new cement and sugar factories, housing projects, power export plan to neighboring countries, etc. These all are on top of the 2.7% average population growth. In this study, the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) is used to explore different possible futures and also to forecast the long-term energy requirements in Ethiopia. The planning period is 33 years from 2018 to 2050. The study employs six different scenarios to unfold the future evolution. The developed scenarios are Business-As-Usual (BAU), Growth in Electrification and Urbanization (E&U), High Economic Growth (HEG) and three policy-driven, Improved Energy Efficiency (IEE-1, IEE-2 and IEE-3) scenarios. The pathways represented by these scenarios can show the maximum expected rise in demand under different drivers and the best-case energy saving opportunities. The model is also used to estimate the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

NBV-SC: Next Best View Planning based on Shape Completion for Fruit Mapping and Reconstruction

Rohit Menon, Tobias Zaenker, Nils Dengler et al.

Active perception for fruit mapping and harvesting is a difficult task since occlusions occur frequently and the location as well as size of fruits change over time. State-of-the-art viewpoint planning approaches utilize computationally expensive ray casting operations to find good viewpoints aiming at maximizing information gain and covering the fruits in the scene. In this paper, we present a novel viewpoint planning approach that explicitly uses information about the predicted fruit shapes to compute targeted viewpoints that observe as yet unobserved parts of the fruits. Furthermore, we formulate the concept of viewpoint dissimilarity to reduce the sampling space for more efficient selection of useful, dissimilar viewpoints. Our simulation experiments with a UR5e arm equipped with an RGB-D sensor provide a quantitative demonstration of the efficacy of our iterative next best view planning method based on shape completion. In comparative experiments with a state-of-the-art viewpoint planner, we demonstrate improvement not only in the estimation of the fruit sizes, but also in their reconstruction, while significantly reducing the planning time. Finally, we show the viability of our approach for mapping sweet peppers plants with a real robotic system in a commercial glasshouse.

An Efficient HTN to STRIPS Encoding for Concurrent Plans

N. Cavrel, D. Pellier, H. Fiorino

The Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) formalism is used to express a wide variety of planning problems in terms of decompositions of tasks into subtaks. Many techniques have been proposed to solve such hierarchical planning problems. A particular technique is to encode hierarchical planning problems as classical STRIPS planning problems. One advantage of this technique is to benefit directly from the constant improvements made by STRIPS planners. However, there are still few effective and expressive encodings. In this paper, we present a new HTN to STRIPS encoding allowing to generate concurrent plans. We show experimentally that this encoding outperforms previous approaches on hierarchical IPC benchmarks.

Sampling-free obstacle gradients and reactive planning in Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF)

Michael Pantic, Cesar Cadena, Roland Siegwart et al.

This work investigates the use of Neural implicit representations, specifically Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), for geometrical queries and motion planning. We show that by adding the capacity to infer occupancy in a radius to a pre-trained NeRF, we are effectively learning an approximation to a Euclidean Signed Distance Field (ESDF). Using backward differentiation of the augmented network, we obtain an obstacle gradient that is integrated into an obstacle avoidance policy based on the Riemannian Motion Policies (RMP) framework. Thus, our findings allow for very fast sampling-free obstacle avoidance planning in the implicit representation.

INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO GREENING ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Yuliia Horiashchenko

The purpose of this study is to analyze the state of implementation of modern eco-innovations and assess their impact on improving the competitiveness of enterprises. Methodology. The main research methods were analysis and synthesis in the study of economic processes that accompanied innovation in enterprises; statistical analysis in the study of the dynamics of waste by type of economic activity and in households; comparative analysis in assessing the world practice of eco-innovation in production; specific and abstract comparative characteristics – in presenting the results, providing conclusions and suggestions for research. Results. Interactive links between innovation and greening are identified. It is emphasized that eco-innovation means a special form of innovation aimed at significantly improving the environment. A critical analysis of the regulatory framework governing sustainable development in Ukraine is made. A statistical assessment of the waste generation process by regions of Ukraine in 2019, including hazard classes I-III, is provided. A secondary statistical observation was conducted, based on the results of which it can be concluded that today three out of twenty people in the world prefer ecological products. It is stated that modern enterprises face a large number of challenges, among which the leading place is occupied by environmental protection and digitalization. The importance of digital, blue and green entrepreneurship (circular business) in Ukraine and the world is proved. The competitive advantages of “digital”, “green” (“blue”) business are obvious: environmental friendliness today is a global trend, and digitalization is the content and benchmark of entrepreneurship; there is currently little competition in green and blue business; their products are in growing demand among consumers; in these types of business there are endless opportunities for the manifestation of creative innovative ideas; these types of business are supported by the public, the state and the world community; eco-innovation can significantly reduce business costs, create conditions for investment and access to foreign markets. Practical implications. These practical recommendations can be applied not only in the Ukrainian business space, but also in the business of countries that have chosen sustainable development. Value/originality. The conducted research can become a theoretical basis for practitioners who aim to provide competitive advantages by greening activities. It is established that the competitive advantages of business today are formed under the influence of globalization processes, digitalization, increasing capital mobility, informatization, and most importantly – improving environmental living standards.
