Why the Apple Doesn't Fall Far: Understanding Intergenerational Transmission of Human Capital

Sandra E. Black, P. Devereux, Kjell G. Salvanes

Parents with higher education levels have children with higher education levels. However, is this because parental education actually changes the outcomes of children, suggesting an important spillover of education policies, or is it merely that more able individuals who have higher education also have more able children? This paper proposes to answer this question by using a unique dataset from Norway. Using the reform of the education system that was implemented in different municipalities at different times in the 1960s as an instrument for parental education, we find little evidence of a causal relationship between parents' education and children's education, despite significant OLS relationships. We find 2SLS estimates that are consistently lower than the OLS estimates with the only statistically significant effect being a positive relationship between mother's education and son's education. These findings suggest that the high correlations between parents' and children's education are due primarily to family characteristics and inherited ability and not education spillovers.

Enhancing the performance of Ga(In)NAs intermediate-band solar cells

Emil Mihai Pavelescu, Saroj Kumar Patra, Cosmin Romaniţan et al.

Intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs) have the potential to overcome the efficiency limit of single-bandgap solar cells. Dilute nitride III–V alloys, with splitting of the conduction band due to band anticrossing, can be used as the intermediate-band material for solar cell applications. In this work, we report on the introduction of engineered GaInNAs alloy, with low (dilute) In and N contents, as IBSC material and the comparison of the performances of GaInNAs-based and the corresponding In-free GaNAs-based IBSCs grown on GaAs (100) substrate. Introduction of a small amount of In (3%) in a GaN _0.011 As _0.989 -based IBSC was found to noticeably increase the short-circuit current, I _sc , at the expense of a small decrease in the open-circuit voltage, V _oc . When annealed at 750 °C for 90 s, significant enhancements in I _sc and V _oc are seen, especially in the In-containing solar cell. The observed In-related enhancement in cell parameters after annealing is related to In-promoted bandgap tailoring and efficient curing of carrier traps during annealing. This occurred without change in the macroscopic composition of the GaInNAs alloy, most likely by In-N bond formation upon annealing, a phenomenon which does not exist in the GaNAs alloy.

Comparative Analysis of Deep Natural Networks and Large Language Models for Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

Nimra Mughal, Ghulam Mujtaba, Sarang Shaikh et al.

Sentiment analysis is essential for comprehending public opinion, particularly when considering e-commerce and the expansion of online businesses. Early approaches treated sentiment analysis as a document or sentence-level classification problem, lacking the ability to capture nuanced opinions about specific aspects. This limitation was addressed by the development of aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA), which links sentiment to specific aspects that are mentioned explicitly or implicitly in the review. ABSA is relatively a recent field of sentiment analysis and the existing models for ABSA face three main challenges, including domain-specificity, reliance on labeled data, and a lack of exploration into the potential of newer large language models (LLMs) such as GPT, PaLM, and T5. Leveraging a diverse set of datasets, including DOTSA, MAMS, and SemEval16, we evaluate the performance of prominent models such as ATAE-LSTM, flan-t5-large-absa, DeBERTa, PaLM, and GPT-3.5-Turbo. Our findings reveal nuanced strengths and weaknesses of these models across different domains, with DeBERTa emerging as consistently high-performing and PaLM demonstrating remarkable competitiveness for aspect term sentiment analysis (ATSA) tasks. In addition, the PaLM demonstrates competitive performance for all the domains that were used in the experiments including the restaurant, hotel, books, clothing, and laptop reviews. Notably, the analysis underscores the models’ domain sensitivity, shedding light on their varying efficacy for both ATSA and ACSA tasks. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of model applicability and highlight potential areas for improvement in ABSA research and development.

Vitamin K and Calcium Chelation in Vascular Health

Jan O. Aaseth, Urban Alehagen, Trine Baur Opstad et al.

The observation that the extent of artery calcification correlates with the degree of atherosclerosis was the background for the alternative treatment of cardiovascular disease with chelator ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA). Recent studies have indicated that such chelation treatment has only marginal impact on the course of vascular disease. In contrast, endogenous calcium chelation with removal of calcium from the cardiovascular system paralleled by improved bone mineralization exerted, i.e., by matrix Gla protein (MGP) and osteocalcin, appears to significantly delay the development of cardiovascular diseases. After post-translational vitamin-K-dependent carboxylation of glutamic acid residues, MGP and other vitamin-K-dependent proteins (VKDPs) can chelate calcium through vicinal carboxyl groups. Dietary vitamin K is mainly provided in the form of phylloquinone from green leafy vegetables and as menaquinones from fermented foods. Here, we provide a review of clinical studies, addressing the role of vitamin K in cardiovascular diseases, and an overview of vitamin K kinetics and biological actions, including vitamin-K-dependent carboxylation and calcium chelation, as compared with the action of the exogenous (therapeutic) chelator EDTA. Consumption of vitamin-K-rich foods and/or use of vitamin K supplements appear to be a better preventive strategy than EDTA chelation for maintaining vascular health.

Use of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in child and school health services among children aged 4 and 6 years in Southern Norway: clinical considerations

Eirin Mølland, Kristin Haraldstad, Eirik Abildsnes et al.

AbstractBackgroundParent reported mental health can be assessed by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Currently, Norwegian norms for parent-reported SDQ do not exist, whereas Swedish, Danish, and United Kingdom (UK) norms have been published. We aimed to (1) describe parent-reported SDQ among children aged 4 and 6 years in Southern Norway, (2) evaluate empirical cutoff values within the context of the Starting RightTMproject in relation to the Swedish, Danish, and UK cutoffs, and (3) evaluate the representativeness of the study sample with regard to parental socioeconomic status.MethodsThis study included parent-reported observations for 665 children (63% consent rate). Means and standard deviations were calculated for the domains of SDQ, and gender differences were assessed. Based on the Swedish, Danish, and UK cutoffs and the 80thand 90thpercentile cutoff values within the study, we calculated the total number of children with borderline and abnormal scores.ResultsBoys had higher mean total difficulties (7.3 vs 5.6) and impact scores (0.3 vs 0.1) and lower prosocial scores (8.3 vs 8.8) than girls. The differences in means were largest in the case of externalizing symptoms (5.0 vs 3.6) and hyperactivity subscore (3.2 vs 2.3). Using the UK cutoff values, 28 and 25 children had borderline and abnormal total difficulties scores, respectively. The corresponding numbers using the within study or Scandinavian cutoff values were 84–99 and 54–79, respectively. Overall, our study sample was well representative of the target population.ConclusionsOur findings consistently indicated that girls had better SDQ scores than boys among children aged 4 and 6 years. Fewer children would be identified as having mental health difficulties using the UK cutoff values than using the Scandinavian age- and gender-relevant cutoff values.

Politically Engaged Mindset of Everyday Coping in Relation to Nursing Values: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutic Study of District Nurses’ Experiences

Marianne Hauan PhD Candidate, MSc, RN, Kari Kvigne PhD, RN, Johanne Alteren PhD, CNSc, RN

Introduction To accommodate challenges threatening the healthcare sector's sustainability, district nursing in Norway implemented the rehabilitative and health promoting mindset of everyday coping. When implementing new ideas and practices in nursing care, understanding the significance of this mindset on patient care and whether it corresponds to nursing values are important to ensure healthcare quality. Objective This study aimed to understand how nurses practice care where everyday coping is implemented in district nursing and their experience of everyday coping as a mindset in relation to nursing values. Methods A qualitative study was conducted including 19 observations and 19 narrative interviews with 10 district nurses, during two data collection periods. Data were analyzed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic method. The analysis process consisted of three steps: naïve reading, structural analysis, and comprehensive understanding. Results The following two main themes and four sub-themes emerged from the data analyses: (i) Understanding individual patient situations; “Creating a nurse–patient relationship to understand the patient landscape” and “providing care based on individual patient needs,” (ii) knowing when and how to motivate or help patients; “distinction between motivating patients and causing stress” and “realistic and desirable demands to motivate patients to perform tasks.” Conclusion Participants determined how to provide care to patients based on their values, professional knowledge, and individual patient situations. The patient landscape is diverse and everyday coping is unable to capture the diversity of patient groups. Thus, everyday coping is not expressed as an overall mindset in nursing practice.

Impact of down-stream processing on functional properties of yeasts and the implications on gut health of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Jeleel Opeyemi Agboola, Marion Schiavone, Margareth Øverland et al.

Abstract Yeasts are becoming popular as novel ingredients in fish feeds because of their potential to support better growth and concomitantly ensure good fish health. Here, three species of yeasts ( Cyberlindnera jadinii , Blastobotrys adeninivorans and Wickerhamomyces anomalus ), grown on wood sugars and hydrolysates of chicken were subjected to two down-stream processes, either direct heat-inactivation or autolysis, and the feed potential of the resulting yeast preparations was assessed through a feeding trial with Atlantic salmon fry. Histological examination of distal intestine based on widening of lamina propria, showed that autolyzed W. anomalus was effective in alleviating mild intestinal enteritis, while only limited effects were observed for other yeasts. Our results showed that the functionality of yeast in counteracting intestinal enteritis in Atlantic salmon was dependent on both the type of yeast and the down-stream processing method, and demonstrated that C. jadinii and W. anomalus have promising effects on gut health of Atlantic salmon.

Exploring Klebsiella pneumoniae in Healthy Poultry Reveals High Genetic Diversity, Good Biofilm-Forming Abilities and Higher Prevalence in Turkeys Than Broilers

Fiona V. Franklin-Alming, Håkon Kaspersen, Marit A. K. Hetland et al.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a well-studied human pathogen for which antimicrobial resistant and hypervirulent clones have emerged globally. K. pneumoniae is also present in a variety of environmental niches, but currently there is a lack of knowledge on the occurrence and characteristics of K. pneumoniae from non-human sources. Certain environmental niches, e.g., animals, may be associated with high K. pneumoniae abundance, and these can constitute a reservoir for further transmission of strains and genetic elements. The aim of this study was to explore and characterize K. pneumoniae from healthy broilers and turkeys. A total of 511 cecal samples (broiler n = 356, turkey n = 155), included in the Norwegian monitoring program for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the veterinary sector (NORM-VET) in 2018, were screened for K. pneumoniae by culturing on SCAI agar. K. pneumoniae was detected in 207 (40.5%) samples. Among the broiler samples, 25.8% were positive for K. pneumoniae, in contrast to turkey with 74.2% positive samples (p < 0.01). Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed, in addition to investigating biofilm production. Whole genome sequencing was performed on 203 K. pneumoniae isolates, and analysis was performed utilizing comparative genomics tools. The genomes grouped into 66 sequence types (STs), with ST35, ST4710 and ST37 being the most prevalent at 13.8%, 7.4%, and 5.4%, respectively. The overall AMR occurrence was low, with only 11.3% of the isolates showing both pheno- and genotypic resistance. Genes encoding aerobactin, salmochelin or yersiniabactin were detected in 47 (23.2%) genomes. Fifteen hypervirulent genomes belonging to ST4710 and isolated from turkey were identified. These all encoded the siderophore virulence loci iuc5 and iro5 on an IncF plasmid. Isolates from both poultry species displayed good biofilm-forming abilities with an average of OD595 0.69 and 0.64. To conclude, the occurrence of K. pneumoniae in turkey was significantly higher than in broiler, indicating that turkey might be an important zoonotic reservoir for K. pneumoniae compared to broilers. Furthermore, our results show a highly diverse K. pneumoniae population in poultry, low levels of antimicrobial resistance, good biofilm-forming abilities and a novel hypervirulent ST4710 clone circulating in the turkey population.

Treatment for acute bronchiolitis before and after implementation of new national guidelines: a retrospective observational study from primary and secondary care in Oslo, Norway

Mette Brekke, Odd Martin Vallersnes, Nicolai Klem et al.

Background Acute bronchiolitis treatment guidelines changed in Norway in 2013, no longer recommending the use of nebulised epinephrine. We aimed to assess whether these changes were successfully implemented in both primary and secondary care. Secondary aims were to compare the difference in management of acute bronchiolitis patients in primary and secondary care between 2009 and 2017.Methods We retrospectively registered data on demographics, clinical features and management from electronic medical records of all infants (<12 months of age) diagnosed with acute bronchiolitis at a primary care centre (Oslo Accident and Emergency Outpatient Clinic) and a secondary care centre (Oslo University Hospital) in Norway in 2009, 2014 and 2017. All patient records were individually reviewed to ensure data accuracy. Results We included 680 (36.3%) patients from primary care and 1195 (63.7%) from secondary care. There was a reduction in the use of nebulised epinephrine from 2009 to 2017 from 66.9% to 16.1% of cases (p<0.001) in primary care and from 59.1% to 4.9% (p<0.001) in secondary care. In parallel, there was an increase in the use of nebulised saline treatment, from 0.8% to 53.8% (p<0.001) in primary care and from 39.3% to 65.3% (p<0.001) in secondary care. The decrease in the use of nebulised racemic epinephrine occurred earlier in secondary care than in primary care; 13.4% vs 56.1%, respectively, in 2014.Conclusions Implementation of the new guidelines on the treatment of acute bronchiolitis was successfully implemented in both primary and secondary care.

Perceived and experienced stigma in first-episode psychosis: A 1-year follow-up study

Carmen Simonsen, Sofie R. Aminoff, Anja Vaskinn et al.

Objectives: Perceived/experienced stigma and its relationship with clinical outcome were investigated across the first year of treatment in a large sample with first-episode psychosis (FEP). Methods: FEP participants (n = 112) in the TOP study were investigated at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Perceived/experienced stigma was measured with items from the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), assessing problems because of barriers and hindrances, and living with dignity because of attitudes and actions of others. Clinical outcome included: symptoms, global functioning, self-rated disability and self-rated life satisfaction. Results: In the total sample, 46% perceived/experienced stigma at baseline, which decreased significantly to 32% at 1-year follow-up. Perceived/experienced stigma was present in 1/5 at both time-points (Sustained stigma), in 2/5 at only one time-point (Transient stigma), and in 2/5 it was not present at either time-point (No stigma). Compared to the No stigma group, the Sustained stigma group had significantly higher levels of positive, excited and depressive symptoms and self-rated disability, as well as lower levels of global functioning and life satisfaction at 1 year follow-up, while the Transient stigma group only had poorer functioning and higher self-rated disability. Yet the outcome variables improved across the first year of treatment in all three stigma groups. Conclusion: Perceived/experienced stigma was common in FEP, yet the rate decreased across the first year of treatment. Although there was some clinical improvement across the first year of treatment irrespective of stigma, stigma was related to poorer clinical outcome in a bidirectional manner. This suggests that perceived/experienced stigma is an important target in the early stages of treatment. Data for the co-expression and purification of human recombinant CaMKK2 in complex with calmodulin in Escherichia coli

Lisa Gerner, Steffi Munack, Koen Temmerman et al.

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase kinase 2 (CaMKK2) has been implicated in a range of conditions and pathologies from prostate to hepatic cancer. Here, we describe the expression in Escherichia coli and the purification protocol for the following constructs: full-length CaMKK2 in complex with CaM, CaMKK2 ‘apo’, CaMKK2 (165-501) in complex with CaM, and the CaMKK2 F267G mutant. The protocols described have been optimized for maximum yield and purity with minimal purification steps required and the proteins subsequently used to develop a fluorescence-based assay for drug binding to the kinase, “Using the fluorescent properties of STO-609 as a tool to assist structure-function analyses of recombinant CaMKK2” [1]. Establishment of the nationwide Norwegian Prescription Database (NorPD) – new opportunities for research in pharmacoepidemiology in Norway

K. Furu

Objectives: To give an overview of the data collection and content of the Norwegian Prescription Database (NorPD). In addition, key figures and results from different studies using data from NorPD are presented. Methods: From 1st January 2004 the Norwegian Institute of Public Health receives monthly data on prescriptions dispensed and collected at all Norwegian pharmacies. Results: Overall, during the four year period (2004-2007) over 4.2 million unique individuals have been recorded in NorPD with at least one prescription medication dispensed from a pharmacy. In each year about two-third of the entire Norwegian population had at least one prescription dispensed, 75% of the women and 61% of the men. The age-specific prevalence was lowest in both genders in those aged 10-14 years. Among 0-17 years old children and adolescents 45% had one or more prescriptions issued in 2007. About 30% of the girls and 38% of the boys had a prescription issued before they were 1 year old. About 90% of individuals aged 70 years and older received prescription medications. Conclusion: NorPD covers the entire nation, 4.75 million inhabitants, and is a valid and reliable data source for studying use of prescription drugs. New areas for pharmacoepidemiological research in Norway are made possible with NorPD, like doing longitudinal studies and record-linkage studies with health surveys and other registers in Norway. It also clearly offers a sound basis of knowledge for national decisionmaking in the field of drug utilisation.
