Stance in CEO Statements from U.S. and Vietnamese Banks’ Annual Reports: A Corpus-Based Cross-Cultural Study

Minh Hieu Nguyen

This corpus-based study investigates the grammatical stance constructions in CEO statements within the annual reports of U.S. and Vietnamese banks from 2020 to 2022. The findings indicate that modality is the dominant stance type followed by attitudinal and epistemic stance markers. Both groups of bank leaders favor desire/intention/decision verbs with infinitive complement clauses, certainty/likelihood verbs controlling complement clauses, and volition/prediction modality. But variations exist in the specific stance devices employed to shape corporate image and engage with stakeholders. These findings provide insights into cross-cultural corporate discourse in the banking sector and have valuable implications for business writing and professional communication.

Crisis Management and Resilience in Hospitality and Tourism Consulting

Christopher Paapa, S. Nguthi

This review paper critically examines how hospitality and tourism organisations and destinations have prepared for and responded to crises ranging from natural disasters and pandemics to economic crises and reputational threats, applying consulting interventions in this process. The purpose of the study was to synthesise theoretical ideologies and empirical evidence that would shed light on the strategic role of consulting in fostering crisis preparedness and resilience. The methodology entails an integrative review of the literature (Involves the systematic gathering, analysing, and synthesising of a diverse range of existing literature from multiple sources), including peer-reviewed academic journal articles, industry reports, and case studies. Key topics considered are crisis communication planning, risk assessment and mitigation, business continuity, and long-term resilience. The results show that while awareness about crisis planning has been growing, the actual application seems to be used largely for post-crisis intervention rather than for pre-crisis planning. Consulting practices have been useful in bridging theory and practice, particularly in risk assessment, communication planning, and continuity frameworks. Still, there exist disparities in the application of these practices from region to region and from firm to firm. The theoretical contribution stems from blending chaos theory, contingency theory, and resilience theory to explain organisational behaviour during crises. Practically, it provides a conceptual framework aimed at consultants and managers so that they might align along certain structured, though flexible, formats during crisis management. At a policy level, the review calls for destination-level policy reform to integrate resilience throughout national and regional tourism strategies. The review also emphasises the importance of consulting in bolstering adaptive capacity, institutional learning, and resilience-building in the hospitality and tourism industries. This serves to shed light on some practical suggestions for academics, practitioners, and policymakers.

Entrepreneurial Leadership Styles and Business Performance in Somalia

Said Samatar

Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the entrepreneurial leadership styles and business performance in Somalia. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: The study found that there is a strong correlation between the two. Different leadership styles, such as transformational, transactional, and charismatic leadership, can impact various aspects of a business's performance, including innovation, employee motivation, and overall success. Transformational leadership, characterized by vision, inspiration, and empowerment of employees, has been found to foster a culture of innovation and creativity within organizations. This style encourages employees to think outside the box, take risks, and contribute ideas, leading to the development of new products or services and ultimately enhancing business performance. Transactional leadership, on the other hand, focuses on task-oriented activities, setting clear goals, providing rewards or punishments based on performance, and ensuring compliance with established procedures. While this style may be effective in maintaining efficiency and productivity, it may not necessarily drive long-term business growth or innovation. Charismatic leadership, characterized by a leader's strong personality, persuasive communication skills, and ability to inspire followers, can also have a significant impact on business performance. Implications to Theory, Practice and Policy: Transformational leadership theory, charismatic leadership theory and servant leadership theory may be used to anchor future studies on assessing the entrepreneurial leadership styles and business performance in Somalia. In practice, organizations can benefit from developing leadership development programs that emphasize a combination of transformational, charismatic, and servant leadership qualities. From a policy perspective, advocating for initiatives that support leadership development and promote a culture of innovation is crucial.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Intellectual Capital and Their Influence on Annual Report Readability: A Literature Review

Valentina Rani Novianri, Susi Sarumpaet, Usep Syaipudin

This research aims to determine the relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) performance, Intellectual Capital, and the readability of annual reports as a key communication tool between companies and stakeholders. This research uses a qualitative literature review approach by analyzing several previous studies related to this topic. The results of the analysis show that companies that are actively involved in CSR practices and have strong Intellectual Capital tend to present annual reports with a higher level of readability. This optimal readability has a positive impact on the understanding of various stakeholders, including investors and creditors, which in turn can support better decision-making. The implication is that companies can utilize CSR practices and Intellectual Capital development as a strategy to increase the readability of their annual reports. Therefore, increasing transparency, readability and clear disclosure of information in annual reports can contribute positively to a company's reputation and support long-term business growth. Recommendations for companies involve paying attention to the regulatory and disclosure reform initiatives that regulators have implemented to ensure disclosure is effective and affordable for all stakeholders

Climate change education and communication in global review: tracking progress through national submissions to the UNFCCC Secretariat

M. McKenzie

Abstract Despite recent intergovernmental commitments to advancing climate change education and communication (CCEC) internationally, there remains a lack of global data to enable tracking or target-setting on country progress. This article shares findings from an analysis of CCEC content in 377 submissions to the UNFCCC Secretariat. Submission types analyzed included National Communications reporting on recent activities, and Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans outlining future plans. Key findings about CCEC in primary to tertiary education, government, media, civil society, business, and public communications sectors are that: (a) while CCEC content appeared in submissions, little is currently suitable for monitoring purposes; and (b) there were notable gaps in CCEC activities, given a pronounced emphasis on cognitive knowledge over affective and action-oriented approaches. Regional variations were also found, with European countries on average including more content in relation to both Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) elements and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator components. Recommendations for future UNFCCC submissions on the quantity and quality of CCEC are highlighted, as well as for research and research-policy collaboration to further monitoring of CCEC implementation and progress globally.

Henry Antonio Romero León

The characterization of Gray (1988) of the accounting systems like the Colombian on the side of the statutory control, the uniformity, the conservatism and the secrecy, has been understand uncritically and almost as a fact. Regarding Symbolic Capital: Poetry Translators from Modern Greek into English

Nadia Georgiou

The research object of this study is the symbolic capital of poetry translators and how it shapes and is being shaped by the current practices and self-descriptions of translators of Modern Greek poetry into English. A number of case studies indicate that people who translate poetry come from a variety of backgrounds, including those of a poet and an academic, which often do not include any formal translation training (Hofstadter 1997; Waldinger 2003; Bullock 2011; Isaxanli 2014). It also appears to be common that translators of poetry have a number of complementary roles, with that of ‘poetry translator’ not always central. The study draws on data consisting of Modern Greek into English poetry translators’ responses to a survey, of paratexts created by Modern Greek into English translators and of ten interviews. Cultural and educational capitals are examined in their institutionalized, objectified and embodied form as bearers of symbolic capital. Three overlapping categories are explored: the translators’ connection to poetry and the source culture, translator education and translator self-description. The translators’ “extratextual visibility” (Koskinen 2000 as cited in Chesterman 2018: 446) is also analyzed as it forms part of the translators’ embodied cultural and symbolic capital. This empirical exploration offers insights into the variety of attitudes and approaches to poetry translation; the emerging patterns map out profiles of a group of contemporary poetry translators, investigate the realities of the craft and re-position poetry translation practitioners with respect to other translation professionals.

Translators’ Use of Digital Resources during Translation

Kristian Tangsgaard Hvelplund

This paper presents the findings from a study on translators’ use of digital resources during the translation process. Eye tracking data and screen recording data from 18 professional translators are analysed in order to 1) examine how much time translators spend on digital resource consultation compared with translation drafting and translation revision, 2) examine how eye movements differ between translation drafting, revision and digital resource consultation and 3) investigate what types of digital resources are used by translators. The findings demonstrate that digital resource consultation constitutes a considerable amount of the translation process. The findings also show longer fixations and larger pupils during resource consultation, indicating heavier cognitive load, and finally the study identifies considerable variation in the use of resources between translators.

DIY in the DNA: Macro Context and National Myth as Enduring Advertising Discourse

Fabrice Desmarais

This study shows how national contexts recurrently foreground specific myths in advertising to increase consumers’ ‘knowledge’ of the positioning of brands and their ‘liking’ of these brands. From an extended sample of New Zealand television commercials, the research isolates the theme of ‘Kiwi Ingenuity’ as an important tool to advertise a wide variety of brands. At a micro level the study illustrates how hyperbolic characterisation works to attach emotional meanings to brands and products, in particular how ingenious characters are used as hyperbolic cultural signs. The study situates these micro representation strategies in their macro cultural context, arguing that the mechanics of national myths in advertising needs to be understood within the geopolitical context.

Krugman vs Garicano: Individual and Cultural Differences in the Rhetoric of two Economic Op-ed Writers

María Ángeles Orts Llopis

The present paper attempts to account for the rhetorical traits of two prestigious economists, who are also authors of economic op-eds: Paul Krugman and Luis Garicano, who write for a prestigious American newspaper, the New York Times, and for the renowned Spanish newspaper, El País, respectively. Through a contrastive study of a roughly 12-thousand-word corpus of either author, this analysis has attempted, on the one hand, to endeavor a qualitative analysis scrutinizing the formal, or lexical-semantic aspects, of their prose in terms of technical words, clichés and coinages, as well as the patterns of conceptualization of the metaphors they use to describe the economic crisis that is sweeping the Western world at large. The second part of the analysis has concentrated upon the interpersonality of the texts, at the pragmatic layer of the op-ed genre, thus covering the extra-linguistic context of the texts which have been scrutinized under the umbrella of metadiscourse. These two different, but complementary, levels of analysis have led to the conclusion that the authors’ styles depict two individual ways in which op-eds are written in the economic world, but that their styles also refl ect cultural and linguistic differences in the way columns are viewed in the English and Spanish languages.

Realizing Dignity for Enhancing Intercultural Competence

Steven Breunig

The aim of this paper is to present the concept of dignity as a refl ective concept that may serve as a strategy for enhancing intercultural competence. Within the field of intercultural communication, intercultural competence seeks to impart essential knowledge and skills for engaging in intercultural encounters with cognitive, behavioral and affective competence. Dignity contributes to intercultural competence by enabling persons to view the social world anew. In this paper, dignity is conceptualized as the development and self-expression of persons free from social categorization, while acknowledging human vulnerability towards the social and material world. In intercultural encounters, a person may indeed sense their vulnerability due to a lack of social orientation, cultural awareness and language skills. Simultaneously, the vulnerability of the Other may be neglected with implications for effective and appropriate interaction between a Self and a culturally dissimilar Other. Accordingly, it is proposed that emotional regulation is essential for realizing dignity as an aspect of intercultural competence. Research on social dynamics and identity and the emotions is not without its precedence within intercultural communication. This project contributes to the objectives of intercultural communication and competence by theorizing how awareness of social dynamics and emotional regulation may support the realization of dignity during intercultural encounters. Dignity may complement other strategies related to cognitive, behavioral and affective competence for engaging in effective and appropriate communication.

Specialised Dictionaries of Economics and Translation

Pedro A. Fuertes-Olivera

This article describes the “Dictionary of Economics” in terms of the Function Theory of Lexicography. It defends the thesis that such information tools must be designed for assisting specific users to solve the specific needs they have in a translation situation. In particular, I will focus on the solutions offered for individualising data retrieval, which will in turn eliminate the so-called information stress or information death produced when users retrieve so much data that they cannot cope with it. This process is illustrated in two recent online dictionaries, the Diccionario Inglés-Español de Contabilidad: Traducción (Fuertes-Olivera et al. 2012a) and the Diccionario Inglés-Español de Contabilidad: Traducción de Frases y Expresiones (Fuertes-Olivera et al. 2012b). They are especially suitable when translating English accounting texts into Spanish. These two dictionaries are considered high quality 21st Century dictionaries, e.g., as candidates for assisting in the training of professional translators within the field of Economics, one of the topics discussed in this Special Issue of Hermes.
