This article deals with the relationship between an urban center and peripheries in two Latin pieces of ʻcollected poetry’: Ausonius’ catalogue of cities of the Empire, Ordo urbium nobilium, and Prudentius’ cycle of hymns on Christian martyrs of the Western Romania, the Peristephanon. In both collections Rome, diametrically opposed in the initial and final positions, points to the geometric center of the orbis terrarum, in each poem for both an objective and a subjective reason: Ausonius was writing as a former consul in ca. 389, Prudentius as a pilgrim in ca. 399. The latter may have compiled his cycle as a Christian counterpart to Ausonius’ Ordo, starting with the Passio of the ideal Christian Roman by name, Romanus, and ending in historical Rome at the tomb of Agnes.

A Geografia de Estrabão apresenta uma sistematização do mundo habitado no início do primeiro século do império romano. O livro XVII compreende a descrição dos territórios do Egito, Etiópia e Líbia e é aqui analisado com o objetivo de explicitar como o geógrafo amasiano caracterizou as regiões norte-africanas e seus respectivos povos. Argumenta-se que, na construção discursiva desses, Estrabão explicita uma dicotomia do tipo bárbaro versus civilizado, por meio da qual estabelece não só a distinção entre dois grupos, mas operacionaliza dentro desta uma diferenciação gradativa. Consideramos que esta gradação ocorre em razão de sua localização geográfica, a qual, para o autor, era um dos importantes fatores a determinar o modo de vida dos mesmos.

In ancient Greece the war upset the normal life of the poleis, but it also offered merchants a great opportunity to earn money through the provisioning of the fighting armies. Indeed, warring poleis had to offer favourable terms for trade with their armies by limiting as much as possible restrictions and impositions about the sale prices in order to entice the merchants to follow their troops to provide them with what is necessary for the sustenance of soldiers. The food provisioning during war is therefore a further example of how emporoi escaped the control of the polis, forcing it to allow the provisioning of their armies to be secured under free market rules.

Vlastos, num artigo intitulado “Slavery in Plato’s Thought”, sustenta, entre outras coisas, a tese de que Platão teria influenciado Aristóteles em sua defesa da escravidão natural, considerando a relação entre governantes e governados na cidade excelente da República um exemplo que se conformaria a essa doutrina. Há, entretanto, vários indícios que o desmentem, tais como a associação da sōphrosynē à harmonia entre os cidadãos, que têm uma opinião comum sobre quem deve governar, além da frequente vinculação da escravidão a violência, tirania e sujeição, o que contradiz a qualificação de virtuosa e amigável douleia, suposta por Vlastos e atribuída a Platão.

Italiano L’articolo riflette sul riuso del mondo antico nel fumetto moderno. Dopo aver mostrato l’esistenza, sin dall’antichità, di forme comunicative fondate sull’interazione tra parola e immagine (retorica; teatro), si analizzano le diverse modalità narrative con cui il mondo classico viene rappresentato nei fumetti (fumetto storico-letterario; fumetto storico-avventuroso o fumetto-Romance; fumetto storico-parodico). L’indagine prosegue poi con l’analisi della struttura narrativa di alcuni fumetti sul mondo antico. Lo spoglio di alcuni comics induce all’individuazione di due categorie della narrazione, che determinano precise interazioni tra mondo antico e fumetto, quali il mondo antico usato come «a priori» della narrazione fumettistica e il mondo antico vissuto come «ritorno al passato». Tali schemi narratologici evidenziano due diverse concezioni dell’antichità: nella prima categoria narrativa passato e presente sono posti sullo stesso piano, senza conferire primati ad alcuno; nel secondo caso, invece, si evidenzia la superiorità culturale della modernità rispetto al mondo antico.   English The paper discusses the representation of the ancient world in modern comics. After having shown that certain media based on the interaction between word and image (rhetoric, theater) exist in fact since ancient times, the different types of narratives are analyzed by which the classical world is represented in comics (comic literary-historical; historical comic or comic-adventure-Romance, historical-parodic). The study continues with the analysis of the narrative structures of comic books that deal with the ancient world. A survey of these comics leads to the identification of two types of narratives which can precisely determine the interactions between ancient world and comic: one that uses the ancient world as “a priori” of its storytelling and another one that can be described as a “return to the past”. Thus, the narratological outline highlights two different conceptions of antiquity: in the first case, past and present are on equal footing, without giving one the primate over the other; in the second, however, the cultural superiority of modernity over the ancient world is emphasized.

Hy word oorleef deur twee broers in Nederland en ‘n suster in Frankryk. Bert is gebore in Eindhoven. In 1965 het hy as onderwyser begin om Klassieke te onderrig aan akademiese hoërskole in Nederland. Nadat hy vir ‘n tydperk in Rome navorsing gedoen het, het hy in 1971 ‘n DLitt et Phil in Klassieke Tale ontvang aan die Universiteit van Leiden met die proefskrif De Redevoeringen by Cassius Dio. Naas Nederlands, Afrikaans en Engels was hy ook Duits, Frans, Italiaans en Spaans magtig.

Em Tito Lívio, História romana (XXXIV, i-viii, 3), Apiano, Guerras civis (IV, 32-34) e Valéria Máximo, Ações e palavras memoráveis (VIII, iii, 3), encontram-se registradas manifestações de protesto de mulheres em Roma, contra a lei Ópia em 195 a.C, e contra o edito dos triúnviros em 43 a.C. Sem direitos de participação política, elas utilizaram as mesmas estratégias de pressão popular empregadas pelos cidadãos romanos.

A Teogonia de Hesíodo é um relato mítico que descreve o movimento do universo, desde o princípio, até uma ordem final, hierarquizada segundo potências divinas, e como este movimento se revela aos homens através da força presentificadora das Musas. Este trabalho visa exatamente delinear, sob o ponto de vista do poder, as gerações e as sucessões embutidas no mito, a partir do Céu, e também interpretar o que representa cada instância do poder, como se instaura e como se comporta no exercício da ordem dentro do processo de evolução do mundo.
