A Quantitative Model of Non-Marriage and Fertility: Bargaining over Leisure

Kazuharu Yanagimoto

This paper introduces a new factor contributing to the decline in marriage and fertility: the growth of leisure technology. Over recent decades, high-income countries have experienced two notable shifts in household and family dynamics. First, there has been a significant decline in marriage rates and fertility. Second, time has increasingly been allocated to leisure activities. This paper presents a unified model of marriage and fertility, incorporating intra-household bargaining dynamics. The model, calibrated using data from Japan between 2019 and 2023, is employed to assess the impact of leisure technology growth on marriage and fertility during 2005-2009. The findings highlight that leisure technology growth makes single life relatively more appealing compared to marriage and parenthood. The model explains 21.1% of the decline in marriage and 73.1% of the decrease in fertility.

Generative AI and the Reallocation of Time: Productivity, Leisure, and Fulfilling Work

Donghyun Suh, Samil Oh

Using a representative survey of Korean workers, we provide evidence on the adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) and how GenAI reallocates time at work. We find that 51.8\% of workers use GenAI for work and GenAI reduces working time by 3.8\%. However, these gains may not materialize in aggregate productivity statistics yet: the correlation between time savings and output changes is near zero. We show this disconnect arises because workers capture efficiency gains primarily as on-the-job leisure, rather than increasing their output. These findings suggest that standard productivity measures may understate AI's impact by missing non-pecuniary welfare channels.

WebVR: Benchmarking Multimodal LLMs for WebPage Recreation from Videos via Human-Aligned Visual Rubrics

Yuhong Dai, Yanlin Lai, Mitt Huang et al.

Existing web-generation benchmarks rely on text prompts or static screenshots as input. However, videos naturally convey richer signals such as interaction flow, transition timing, and motion continuity, which are essential for faithful webpage recreation. Despite this potential, video-conditioned webpage generation remains largely unexplored, with no dedicated benchmark for this task. To fill this gap, we introduce WebVR, a benchmark that evaluates whether MLLMs can faithfully recreate webpages from demonstration videos. WebVR contains 175 webpages across diverse categories, all constructed through a controlled synthesis pipeline rather than web crawling, ensuring varied and realistic demonstrations without overlap with existing online pages. We also design a fine-grained, human-aligned visual rubric that evaluates the generated webpages across multiple dimensions. Experiments on 19 models reveal substantial gaps in recreating fine-grained style and motion quality, while the rubric-based automatic evaluation achieves 96% agreement with human preferences. We release the dataset, evaluation toolkit, and baseline results to support future research on video-to-webpage generation.

Does Travel Stage Matter? How Leisure Travellers Perceive Their Privacy Attitudes Towards Personal Data Sharing Before, During, and After Travel

Haiyue Yuan, Shujun Li, Fatima Gillani et al.

People's attitudes towards personal data sharing have been extensively researched, however, limited research studied their evolving nature in across different stages of a leisure trip. This paper addresses this gap by exploring how leisure travellers' attitudes towards sharing personal data change before, during and after travel. Analysing data from an online survey with 318 participants, we found that participants' privacy attitudes towards sharing different personal data vary based on sharing purposes and travel stages. Interestingly, participants exhibited a more relaxed attitude towards sharing commonly sensitive personal data (e.g., name, gender) compared to other types of personal data. This is likely because sharing such data for travel bookings has become essential and widely accepted among travellers when using booking sites, which is in line with previous work stating that information easily obtainable is typically not seen as highly confidential. Moreover, despite participants' self-reported frequent use of social media platforms, content sharing is minimal on TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Twitter. Conversely, Facebook and Instagram were more common for travel-related content sharing. This pattern remains consistent across the three stages of travel, suggesting that the stage of travel does not significantly influence how people share on social media platforms, which has been overlooked in past studies. Furthermore, we discovered that a participant's gender, previous travel frequency, and country of residence can influence their perceptions of personal data sharing at different travel stages, confirming the complex and context-dependent nature of privacy perception and attitudes. Based on the findings observed from this study, we further discuss implications and potential contributions of our work to the privacy and security community in general.

Physical Education of Schoolchildren as a Managed Learning Process: Theoretical and Methodological Foundations, a Systems Perspective, and Modelling

Olha Ivashchenko, Oleg Khudolii, Mykola Khudolii

Objectives. To synthesize contemporary scientific approaches to interpreting physical education of schoolchildren within the logic of a managed learning process and to clarify the role of pedagogical control, modelling, and age-related developmental regularities in shaping learning outcomes. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted as a narrative review of publications addressing physical education theory, pedagogical control, modelling of the learning process, age-related developmental regularities, and the teaching of physical exercises in general secondary education. The analysis was carried out from systems-based and learning-oriented perspectives on the organisation of physical education. Results. The review supports interpreting physical education of schoolchildren as a managed learning process in which learning outcomes emerge through the interaction of pedagogical control, modelling, and learners’ age-related developmental characteristics. Age-related regularities are best treated as parameters of learning models that define the boundaries for valid interpretation of pedagogical-control results. Pedagogical control acquires a regulatory function only when embedded within a model of the learning process. The synthesis also allows the learning of physical exercises to be interpreted as the formation and dynamics of learning states that can serve as objects of pedagogical control and regulation. Conclusions. The proposed synthesis enables interpreting outcomes of physical education as consequences of the organisation of the learning process rather than as autonomous normative indicators. This narrative review delineates theoretical and methodological frames for further research aimed at empirically testing models of managed physical education and refining tools of pedagogical control in general secondary education practice.

On the Relationship between Space-Time Accessibility and Leisure Activity Participation

Yuan Liao, Rafael H. M. Pereira, Jorge Gil et al.

Understanding how accessibility shapes participation in leisure activities is central to promoting inclusive and vibrant urban life. Conventional accessibility measures often focus on potential access from fixed home locations, overlooking the constraints and opportunities embedded in daily routines. In this study, we apply a space-time accessibility (STA) metric rooted in the capability approach, capturing feasible leisure opportunities between home and work given a certain time budget, individual transport modes, and urban infrastructure. Using high-resolution GPS data from 2,415 residents in the Paris region, we assess how STA influences total travel time and leisure participation, measured as the diversity of leisure locations visited. Our analysis shows that most individuals, especially active transport users, choose destinations aligned with their STA-defined opportunity sets, underscoring the metric's validity in capturing capability sets. Structural equation modeling reveals that STA directly fosters leisure diversity but also reduces travel time, which in turn is associated with lower diversity of visited leisure locations. These findings highlight the value of person-centered, capability-informed accessibility metrics for understanding inequalities in urban mobility and informing transport planning strategies that expand real freedoms to participate in social life across diverse population groups.

Relationship Between Leisure Activities, Stress Management Methods, Study Methods, and Methods of Learning New Things Among First-Year Statistics Students

Thiyanga S. Talagala

The interplay between leisure activities, stress management methods, studying methods, and methods of learning new things is crucial and affects performance in all aspects of life. On the other hand, data science and statistics are rapidly growing fields with high demands across universities. Thus, this study aimed to identify the similarities and dissimilarities between the four dimensions: leisure activities, stress management methods, studying methods and methods of learning new things. The participants of this study were first-year undergraduates studying statistics at one of the universities in Sri Lanka. There were 117 students in the sample (female-65, male-52). A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data. First, individual responses for each question under each dimension were visualized using tile maps separately for males and females to identify similarities and dissimilarities in responses. Next, individuals were clustered based on the responses for each dimension separately. Finally, all resulting clusters were re-clustered to identify the relationships between the dimensions. In all cluster analyses, we used Jaccard distance with hierarchical clustering using the complete linkage method. The results were visualized using tile maps. Across all four dimensions we considered, the top activities were either listening to music or lectures and watching videos or TV shows, suggesting that individuals are introverts and passive learners. There was no strong relationship between these dimensions. By identifying these clusters and relationships, educators can tailor instructional approaches to enhance engagement and effectiveness in diverse learning environments.

An Analysis of the Relationship Between the Characteristics of Innovative Consumers and the Degree of Serious Leisure in User Innovation

Taichi Abe, Yasunobu Morita

This study examines the relationship between the concept of serious leisure and user innovation. We adopted the characteristics of innovative consumers identified by Luthje (2004)-product use experience, information exchange, and new product adoption speed-to analyze their correlation with serious leisure engagement. The analysis utilized consumer behavior survey data from the "Marketing Analysis Contest 2023" sponsored by Nomura Research Institute, examining the relationship between innovative consumer characteristics and the degree of serious leisure (Serious Leisure Inventory and Measure: SLIM). Since the contest data did not directly measure innovative consumer characteristics or serious leisure engagement, we established alternative variables for quantitative analysis. The results showed that the SLIM alternative variable had positive correlations with diverse product experiences and early adoption of new products. However, no clear relationship was found with information exchange among consumers. These findings suggest that serious leisure practice may serve as a potential antecedent to user innovation. The leisure career perspective of the serious leisure concept may capture the motivations of user innovators that Okada and Nishikawa (2019) identified.

Impact Of Income And Leisure On Optimal Portfolio, Consumption, Retirement Decisions Under Exponential Utility

Tae Ung Gang, Yong Hyun Shin

We study an optimal control problem encompassing investment, consumption, and retirement decisions under exponential (CARA-type) utility. The financial market comprises a bond with constant drift and a stock following geometric Brownian motion. The agent receives continuous income, consumes over time, and has the option to retire irreversibly, gaining increased leisure post-retirement compared to pre-retirement. The objective is to maximize the expected exponential utility of weighted consumption and leisure over an infinite horizon. Using a martingale approach and dual value function, we derive implicit solutions for the optimal portfolio, consumption, and retirement time. The analysis highlights key contributions: first, the equivalent condition for no retirement is characterized by a specific income threshold; second, the influence of income and leisure levels on optimal portfolio, consumption, and retirement decisions is thoroughly examined. These results provide valuable insights into the interplay between financial and lifestyle choices in retirement planning.

Assessment of Diagnostic Capabilities of Methods of Recreation of Voltage Fluctuations

Piotr Kuwałek

Voltage fluctuations are one of the most common low-frequency disturbances of power quality. Diagnostics of these disturbances are a complex process because voltage fluctuations affect different loads in different ways. Therefore, there is no measure of power quality that allows for the complementary assessment of severity of this disturbance, allow for the identification of sources of voltage fluctuations, and post-factum investigation of their effects. Among the currently used measures of voltage fluctuations, voltage fluctuation indices have the greatest diagnostic capabilities. Many preliminary studies also show the potential possibility of recreation of voltage fluctuations, including: based on voltage fluctuation indices. This paper presents the results of research on methods of recreation of voltage fluctuations from voltage fluctuation indices. The research carried out included a set of data obtained in a real power grid. Moreover, the impact of the discrimination period on the accuracy of recreation of voltage fluctuations has been assessed. The presented research results show, on the one hand, the usefulness of voltage fluctuation indices in the process of recreation of voltage fluctuations and, on the other hand, further challenges in the recreation of voltage fluctuations.

Is it a work or leisure travel? Applying text classification to identify work-related travel on social networks

Lucas Félix, Washington Cunha, Jussara Almeida

In today's digital era, the use of Social Networks (SNs) and Location-Based SNs (LBSNs) has become integral for travelers seeking Points of Interest (POI) and sharing travel experiences. This trend is supported by the fact that a significant majority of American travelers utilize SNs during their trips. However, the abundance of information available on these platforms presents a challenge in identifying the best options. To address this issue, Recommender Systems (RS) are commonly employed to suggest POIs based on user history, with the integration of contextual information enhancing the quality of recommendations. Notably, incorporating user travel purpose, which is often overlooked but holds potential in characterizing travelers' behavior, can lead to more tailored recommendations. In this study, we propose a model to predict whether a trip is leisure or work-related, utilizing state-of-the-art Automatic Text Classification (ATC) models such as BERT, RoBERTa, and BART to enhance the understanding of user travel purposes and improve recommendation accuracy in specific travel scenarios.

When Healthy Habits Turn Harmful: A Medical Perspective on Exercise Addiction

Izabela Hądzlik, Klaudia Wojtyła, Marta Barg

Behavioural addictions, also known as non-substance-related addictions, encompass a range of compulsive behaviours that closely mirror substance use disorders in their effects on the brain's reward system and the individual's daily life. These addictions include, but are not limited to, gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder, compulsive shopping, and the focus of this review - exercise addiction. Exercise addiction is characterized by an intense, uncontrollable urge to engage in physical activity, despite potential negative consequences. Unlike substance use disorders, exercise addiction often remains underrecognized, overshadowed by the widespread promotion of regular physical activity as a healthy lifestyle choice. This review aims to offer a comprehensive overview of exercise addiction, covering its psychological origin and characteristics, diagnostic criteria, co-occurrence with other psychiatric disorders, epidemiology among athletes and management strategies.

Dribbling emotions and anxiety in women’s football: a scoping review

Elena-Andreea Trandafirescu, Vladimir Potop, Ilie Mihai et al.

Background and Study Aim. Fear of failure, choking under pressure, financial disparities in income, and concerns related to body image and social pressure may intensify on-field challenges. These factors make the competitive environment particularly demanding for female soccer players. The aim of the current review is to map the available evidence on anxiety in women's football over the past decade and to identify interventions designed to manage anxiety among female soccer players. Material and Methods. A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. An extensive search was carried out across four major databases for publications dated between 2014 and 2024. Two independent reviewers screened titles and abstracts, followed by full-text screening and data extraction. Any disagreements were resolved by a third researcher. The findings were tabulated and synthesized in a narrative format. The study was pre-registered on the Open Science Framework. Results. The search yielded 2885 unique records. A total of 21 texts were reviewed in full, and the final sample included 14 studies. Some of the records included mentioned modifications to psychosocial interventions, such as Virtual Reality (VR) relaxation sessions, pre-exercise sporting massage, and psychological training programs (including psycho-neuromuscular theory and visualization techniques). These interventions led to a reduction in anxiety, though their effectiveness varied significantly across different approaches. Our results suggest that research on women's football may disproportionately focus on psychological interventions for managing anxiety. This highlights the need for broader investigations into other factors that influence athletes' performance and well-being. Conclusions. This scoping review helps clarify the current landscape of anxiety research in women's soccer. It highlights both promising interventions and gaps in the research over the past decade. Although the body of evidence on anxiety interventions is small, it suggests that psychological interventions may be effective in reducing anxiety among female soccer players.

Interventions that aim to increase social participation through recreation or leisure activity for adults with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury: a scoping review

Rebecca Leeson, Michelle Collins, J. Douglas

Abstract Purpose Social isolation and reduced social participation are common after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Developing interventions that aim to increase social participation through recreation or leisure activities continues to be challenging. This scoping review was conducted to provide an overview of interventions used to increase social participation through in-person recreation or leisure activity for adults with moderate to severe TBI living in the community. Methods Using the Arksey and O'Malley framework, a scoping review of the literature published from 2005 to 2023 was conducted across four databases: Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Scopus. Quality appraisals were conducted for included studies. Results Following the removal of duplicates, 10,056 studies were screened and 52 were retained for full-text screening. Seven papers were included in the final review. Studies varied with respect to the type of intervention and program outcomes. The interpretation was impeded by study quality, with only two studies providing higher levels of evidence. Barriers and facilitators to successful program outcomes were identified. Conclusions Few studies with interventions focused on increasing social participation in leisure or recreation activity were identified. Further research incorporating mixed methods and longitudinal design to evaluate effectiveness over time is needed to build the evidence base for increasing social participation through leisure activity. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION There is evidence to support participating in recreation and leisure activities that involve interactions with others can increase social participation outcomes for adults with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. Participating in leisure-based interventions not only provides opportunities for social connection but may also impact positively on personal wellbeing, enjoyment, and confidence. Understanding the range of personal, practical, support, and activity factors that can facilitate or obstruct participation in leisure or recreational activity programs at an individual level may improve social participation outcomes. Measuring the impact of an intervention for social participation should include post-intervention changes across outcome domains and over time

Exploring the Relationships Across Recreation Specialization, Leisure Satisfaction, and Happiness: The Case of Korean Hikers

Jaehyun Kim, Yuji Lee, N. Kil et al.

Abstract Prior studies have challenged the notion that recreationists progress along the specialization continuum over time. Using a sample of 443 Korean hikers, this study aimed to determine whether the relationship of specialization to leisure involvement, leisure satisfaction, and happiness is linear or curvilinear. Further, we examined the potential moderating effect of specialization on the relationship between leisure satisfaction and happiness. Results indicated that hikers showed greater specialization as their behavioral involvement increased to a certain point, beyond which specialization decreased. There were also inverted U-shape curvilinear relationships of specialization to levels of leisure satisfaction and happiness. Moreover, there was a significant moderating effect of specialization on the relationship between leisure satisfaction and happiness. Our findings provide deeper insights into the relationship between specialization, leisure satisfaction, and happiness among hikers. Furthermore, managerial implications for public leisure agencies to improve leisure satisfaction and psychological well-being of hikers were discussed.

Supporting Piggybacked Co-Located Leisure Activities via Augmented Reality

Samantha Reig, Erica Principe Cruz, Melissa M. Powers et al.

Technology, especially the smartphone, is villainized for taking meaning and time away from in-person interactions and secluding people into "digital bubbles". We believe this is not an intrinsic property of digital gadgets, but evidence of a lack of imagination in technology design. Leveraging augmented reality (AR) toward this end allows us to create experiences for multiple people, their pets, and their environments. In this work, we explore the design of AR technology that "piggybacks" on everyday leisure to foster co-located interactions among close ties (with other people and pets. We designed, developed, and deployed three such AR applications, and evaluated them through a 41-participant and 19-pet user study. We gained key insights about the ability of AR to spur and enrich interaction in new channels, the importance of customization, and the challenges of designing for the physical aspects of AR devices (e.g., holding smartphones). These insights guide design implications for the novel research space of co-located AR.
