Government Leadership and Market Participation: A Collaborative Development Model for the Cultural Ecosystem Services of Nature Reserves

Yue Song, Zhonghe Zhang, Wenjia Liu et al.

Natural protected areas possess abundant cultural ecosystem services (CESs), requiring integrated efforts from both government and market for development; however, disagreements and debates regarding respective development boundaries are ongoing. This study establishes a theoretical framework for observation and analysis using protected areas in state-owned forest regions of NE China as a case study. Data were collected from multiple stakeholders. The research results show the following. (1) Protected areas in NE China’s state-owned forests contain at least five types of CES. Among these, scientific research (mean = 3.877), education (mean = 3.907), and psychological benefits (mean = 3.930) were rated higher than spiritual values (mean = 2.908) and recreation (mean = 2.898). (2) Government intervention and market demand not only directly improve the quality and efficiency of CES development but also leverage the foundational advantages of resource endowment and development level to indirectly enhance CES outcomes. (3) In the development of CES in protected areas, the government focuses on ecological conservation and restoration, whereas the market prioritizes economic value. This study constructs a framework for understanding the complex causal relationships between CES development approaches and their effectiveness. It also clarifies the development boundaries between government and market roles in protected areas.

Total Quality Management in Sport Tourism and the Hospitality Industry: The Case of Greek Luxury Resorts with Sport and Recreation Facilities and Services

Alkistis Papaioannou, K. Koronios, Lazaros Ntasis et al.

Total quality management (TQM) refers to a way of management wherein senior management is committed to guiding employees in continuous improvement in all processes, services and products, with the ultimate goal of satisfying customer requirements and expectations. The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of leadership, organization culture (OC), customer-oriented strategy (COS) and human resource empowerment (HRE) on innovation, as well as the effect of innovation on TQM for sustainable development in Greek luxury resorts with sport and recreation facilities and services. A quantitative 5-point Likert scale method was utilized for the purpose of this study, and an online questionnaire survey was adopted for the data collection. To evaluate the resilience of our model, we conducted structural equation modeling using SPSS and AMOS software. Varimax rotation with Kaiser normalization was utilized to enhance the robustness of the analysis. A total of 895 questionnaires were successfully gathered from 454 luxury resorts. This study validated that leadership, OC, COS and HRE positively impact the luxury resorts’ innovation and thus support that innovation had a significant impact on TQM, which in turn leads to their sustainability and effectiveness and is supported by the resource-based view (RBV). Furthermore, this study is the first within the Greek hotel industry that jointly estimates the influence of leadership, OC, COS and HRE on innovation and its concurrent effect on TQM for sustainable development, which has not been methodologically considered before and provides useful policy implications for managers within the hotel industry.

Exploring war tourism through the use of virtual reality in the context of conflict situations

Remus-Ion Hornoiu, Delia Popescu, Ionut-Andrei Militaru

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has had a significant impact on the country's tourism industry, with many regions becoming inaccessible or unattractive due to safety concerns. VR tourism in war zones, a form of tourism that involves visiting areas affected by conflict, disaster, or civil unrest, has become a topic of interest in the context of the war in Ukraine. To investigate the intention to use VR tourism in the war zone, an integrated framework was proposed by combining key elements such as interest in VR tourism in the war zone and the technology acceptance model (TAM). A sample of 121 respondents was collected in January 2021, and hypotheses were tested using a PLS-SEM model. This research tested a conceptual model that showed that the intention to use VR tourism in the war zone was influenced by perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitude toward the use of VR tourism in the war zone, all partially or fully mediated by people's interest in VR tourism in the war zone. This paper has theoretical and managerial implications

Faisal Yousef Sabah, Sana’a Khaled Ghazal, Mohammad Abdallah Burqan

Objectives: To examine the capacity of Nablus city`s urban administration to reconfigure its urban space, by revealing the extent to which the structural plans are implemented on the land as intended and in a way that results in sustainable urban development. Methods: The comparative approach was used, the study was conducted on the structural plan approved in 1996 and 2013 and compared with aerial photographs taken in 2011 and 2018, and three sectors were used for analysis and comparison: infrastructure (roads), public services (schools), and tourism and recreation (parks and green spaces). Results: The results showed concluded that successive administrations of Nablus city have failed to remodel the urban space since 1996. Only 45.8% of the proposed road network was built for the years of the first structure plan 1996-2012 and that 58.1% of the area destined for parks and green areas had been converted to other use. The analysis revealed that 83.6% of schools were built outside public service spaces, according to the 1996 and 2013 plans, and the green area decreased between 2013 and 2018 by an amount of 64,047 m², which corresponds to 32.8% of the total area, according to the 2013 plan. Conclusions: The study recommends reconsidering the fundamentals of drafting structural plans and supervising their implementation, and the need for municipal authorities to act more forcefully on green degradation.

Mapping information systems maturity: the case of the Portuguese hospitality industry

Nuno António , Gustavo Sá

Hospitality is a highly competitive market that struggles to improve its performance. Today, the use of technology is a critical factor for more efficient performance. To understand the perception that decision-makers have of information systems’ influence and importance in their organizations, we conduct a case study in Portugal. The objective was to assess information systems' maturity level of independent hotels and small hotel chains, mapping the level to the hotel's characteristics. We surveyed 86 companies, representing a total of 195 hotels. We designed the survey to evaluate the adoption of information systems and the perception decision-makers had of those systems' importance accordingly to the Network Exploitation Capability (NEC) model (Piccoli et al., 2011), with results of 2.7 on a scale of 1 to 5, differing by hotel characteristics. Generally, hoteliers consider that their companies take more advantage of technology and information systems than they do. In addition, this study explores the types of systems used and hoteliers' main factors, drivers, and limitations to invest in technology and influencing information systems' maturity.

Life is an Adventure: From Action Theory to Action

Peg Brand Weiser

Myles Brand was the fourth President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This essay tracks the progression of Brand's early work in action theory, his theoretical turn to the moral role of education, and finally his legacy of principled leadership on issues of ethics and social justice within intercollegiate athletics during what I refer to as "The Brand Era." I show that Brand's writings and speeches from 1970 through 2002 offer a foundation for the conceptual strategies employed in meeting NCAA challenges from 2003 through 2009. His innovative conceptualization of the applied philosophy of sport moved him forward from action theory into action.

The Economic Potential Of Cultural Heritage In The Rural Society Of Romania: The Case Of North Dobrudja

Holostencu Luciana-Floriana

Rural tourism is an element of cultural and ethnic identity of the Romanian people, being directly related to the evolution and prosperity of the community. The traditional Romania's settlement has always been based on the cooperation between its residents, partnership which has led to the preservation of customs, pilgrimages and other traditional holidays. Unfortunately, in the recent decades, the economy, population, and even the well-known natural landscape of a traditional settlement have undergone significant changes, affecting by a negative manner its identity and prosperity. The objective of this research is to analyze the attitudes of different population members (both young and seniors) towards the tangible heritage of an unique region of Romania, the northern area of Dobrudja, from the perspective of the late changes. Disparities in specific bias, the willingness to be involved in the local activities and the approach regarding the sustainable conservation and economic progress of cultural built heritage assets were discovered to correlate with age and inclusion to a specific group. The cross-examination of the personal attitudes of people who are living in the rural area regarding its cultural heritage and its commercial potential may lead to the development of a specific guideline for the preservation and sustainable development of these cultural assets in a new rural area.

State of the art of pricing policy in air transportation: network carriers vs. low-cost airlines

Christian Wehner, Jesús Manuel López-Bonilla , Luis Miguel López-Bonilla et al.

The modern air transport industry is highly competitive. To survive in the market, the implementation of a successful marketing strategy is fundamental. In particular, an effective pricing policy has become crucial for airlines to remain profitable. Correspondingly, the different types of airline in the market have also established very distinct pricing policies. The present study is based on a literature review and presents the state of the art of pricing policy in air transportation. The aim is to compare and discuss the pricing strategies of network carriers and lowcost airlines. Special attention is paid to Revenue Management, which is a very important management tool used by airlines to take advantage of the differences in willingness to pay of passengers. The pricing policy, however, depends on the overall business strategy of the airline. Results show many differences, resulting from the fact that these two types of airline are characterized by very different fundamental business models and, correspondingly, also target groups. Since network carriers and also low-cost airlines have adjusted their pricing strategies lately, these recent developments will be discussed as well. This paper adds to the knowledge of this topic because it presents the most up-to-date and complete study on pricing regarding network carriers vs. low-cost airlines.

Time perception: A study of young Brazilian workers

Kely César Martins de Paiva, Cinthia Mara Oliveira e Souza

Given the importance of time as a category of analysis in organisational research, this study’s objective was to analyse the time perceptions of young Brazilian workers. The study was guided by the five time dimensions proposed by Bluedorn and Jaussi (2007): polychronicity, speed, punctuality, temporal depth and entrainment. The field work consisted of a descriptive case study, paired with a quantitative analysis of data collected with a structured, closed and self-administered questionnaire based on Paiva, Dutra, Santos and Barros’s (2013) Time Perception Scale. The data were analysed using univariate and bivariate statistics. Monochronic, slow and punctual behaviours, with past temporal depth, predominate among young workers. The results also show that respondents are highly temporally entrained from various perspectives, particularly entrainment through synchrony, followed by entrainment through leadership and conduction. Based on these findings, the contributions and limitations of the study are presented, and new possibilities for future research are suggested.
