Leveraging statistical models to improve pre-season forecasting and in-season management of a recreational fishery

A. Challen Hyman, Chloe Ramsay, Tiffanie A. Cross et al.

Effective management of recreational fisheries requires accurate forecasting of future harvests and real-time monitoring of ongoing harvests. Traditional methods that rely on historical catch data to predict short-term harvests can be unreliable, particularly if changes in management regulations alter angler behavior. In contrast, statistical modeling approaches can provide faster, more flexible, and potentially more accurate predictions, enhancing management outcomes. In this study, we developed and tested models to improve predictions of Gulf of Mexico gag harvests for both pre-season planning and in-season monitoring. Our best-fitting model outperformed traditional methods (i.e., estimates derived from historical average harvest) for both cumulative pre-season projections and in-season monitoring. Notably, our modeling framework appeared to be more accurate in more recent, shorter seasons due to its ability to account for effort compression. A key advantage of our framework is its ability to explicitly quantify the probability of exceeding harvest quotas for any given season duration. This feature enables managers to evaluate trade-offs between season duration and conservation goals. This is especially critical for vulnerable, highly targeted stocks. Our findings also underscore the value of statistical models to complement and advance traditional fisheries management approaches.

Measuring Human Leadership Skills with Artificially Intelligent Agents

Ben Weidmann, Yixian Xu, David J. Deming

We show that the ability to lead groups of humans is predicted by leadership skill with Artificially Intelligent agents. In a large pre-registered lab experiment, human leaders worked with AI agents to solve problems. Their performance on this 'AI leadership test' was strongly correlated with their causal impact on human teams, which we estimate by repeatedly randomly assigning leaders to groups of human followers and measuring team performance. Successful leaders of both humans and AI agents ask more questions and engage in more conversational turn-taking; they score higher on measures of social intelligence, fluid intelligence, and decision-making skill, but do not differ in gender, age, ethnicity or education. Our findings indicate that AI agents can be effective proxies for human participants in social experiments, which greatly simplifies the measurement of leadership and teamwork skills.

Edge-Mapping of Service Function Trees for Sensor Event Processing

Babar Shahzaad, Alistair Barros, Colin Fidge

Fog computing offers increased performance and efficiency for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications through distributed data processing in nearby proximity to sensors. Given resource constraints and their contentious use in IoT networks, current strategies strive to optimise which data processing tasks should be selected to run on fog devices. In this paper, we advance a more effective data processing architecture for optimisation purposes. Specifically, we consider the distinct functions of sensor data streaming, multi-stream data aggregation and event handling, required by IoT applications for identifying actionable events. We retrofit this event processing pipeline into a logical architecture, structured as a service function tree (SFT), comprising service function chains. We present a novel algorithm for mapping the SFT into a fog network topology in which nodes selected to process SFT functions (microservices) have the requisite resource capacity and network speed to meet their event processing deadlines. We used simulations to validate the algorithm's effectiveness in finding a successful SFT mapping to a physical network. Overall, our approach overcomes the bottlenecks of single service placement strategies for fog computing through composite service placements of SFTs.

Transformer-based Graph Neural Networks for Battery Range Prediction in AIoT Battery-Swap Services

Zhao Li, Yang Liu, Chuan Zhou et al.

The concept of the sharing economy has gained broad recognition, and within this context, Sharing E-Bike Battery (SEB) have emerged as a focal point of societal interest. Despite the popularity, a notable discrepancy remains between user expectations regarding the remaining battery range of SEBs and the reality, leading to a pronounced inclination among users to find an available SEB during emergency situations. In response to this challenge, the integration of Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) and battery-swap services has surfaced as a viable solution. In this paper, we propose a novel structural Transformer-based model, referred to as the SEB-Transformer, designed specifically for predicting the battery range of SEBs. The scenario is conceptualized as a dynamic heterogeneous graph that encapsulates the interactions between users and bicycles, providing a comprehensive framework for analysis. Furthermore, we incorporate the graph structure into the SEB-Transformer to facilitate the estimation of the remaining e-bike battery range, in conjunction with mean structural similarity, enhancing the prediction accuracy. By employing the predictions made by our model, we are able to dynamically adjust the optimal cycling routes for users in real-time, while also considering the strategic locations of charging stations, thereby optimizing the user experience. Empirically our results on real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of our model against nine competitive baselines. These innovations, powered by AIoT, not only bridge the gap between user expectations and the physical limitations of battery range but also significantly improve the operational efficiency and sustainability of SEB services. Through these advancements, the shared electric bicycle ecosystem is evolving, making strides towards a more reliable, user-friendly, and sustainable mode of transportation.

Words and Action: Modeling Linguistic Leadership in #BlackLivesMatter Communities

Dani Roytburg, Deborah Olorunisola, Sandeep Soni et al.

In this project, we describe a method of modeling semantic leadership across a set of communities associated with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, which has been informed by qualitative research on the structure of social media and Black Twitter in particular. We describe our bespoke approaches to time-binning, community clustering, and connecting communities over time, as well as our adaptation of state-of-the-art approaches to semantic change detection and semantic leadership induction. We find substantial evidence of the leadership role of BLM activists and progressives, as well as Black celebrities. We also find evidence of the sustained engagement of the conservative community with this discourse, suggesting an alternative explanation for how we arrived at the present moment, in which "anti-woke" and "anti-CRT" bills are being enacted nationwide.

Treatment retention, return to use, and recovery support following COVID-19 relaxation of methadone take-home dosing in two rural opioid treatment programs: A mixed methods analysis

K. Hoffman, C. Foot, X. Levander et al.

Objectives In March 2020, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration permitted Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) to relax restrictions on take-home methadone and promoted telehealth to minimize potential exposures to COVID-19. We assessed the effects of COVID-19-related changes on take-home methadone dosing in two OTPs serving five rural Oregon counties. Methods We used a mixed-methods convergent design. The OTPs extracted urine drug test (UDT) results, take-home methadone regimens, and treatment retention from the electronic health record (EHR) for patients (n = 377). A mixed-effects negative binomial regression model assessed patient-level differences in take-home doses before and after the COVID-19 policy changes and the associations with treatment discontinuation, and UDT positivity. Semi-structured qualitative interviews (n = 32) explored patient reactions to increased take-home dosing and reduced clinic visits to provide context for quantitative findings. Results The number of take-home doses increased in the post-COVID-19 period for patients engaged in treatment for more than 180 days (median: 8 vs 13 take-home doses per month, p = 0.011). Take-homes did not increase for patients with fewer days of treatment. Each percentage point increase in take-home dosing above what would be expected without COVID-19 policy changes was negatively associated with the percent of UDT positive for opioids (B = −0.12, CI [−0.21, −0.04], p = 0.005) and the probability of treatment discontinuation (aOR = 0.97, CI [0.95, 0.99], p = 0.003). Qualitative analysis revealed three themes explaining how increased take-home dosing supported recovery: 1) value of feeling trusted with increased responsibility; 2) reduced travel time permitted increased employment and recreation; and 3) reduced exposure to individuals less stable in recovery and potential triggers. Conclusions Take-home methadone dose relaxations were associated with increased methadone take-home doses, improved retention, and decreased UDT opioid positive results among clinically stable patients. Qualitative findings suggest that fewer take-home restrictions are feasible and desirable and do not pose safety or public health harms.

Personnel Policy in the City

F. Thompson

As a result of the University of California's Oakland Project, Oakland now enjoys a fourth claim to -fame-after Jack London, the Hell's Angels, and Charley Finley-the honor of having, on a per capita basis, the most studied city government in the world. As one of several analyses of urban administration resulting from the Oakland Project, this book intensively "explores how officials deal with the politics of jobs" in a medium-sized, council-manager, central city. The author's thesis is that the administration of the municipal personnel function is much more a political than a technical process, and he gives us seven chapters' worth of description and analysis of the processes by which positions are created and classified, people are recruited and hired, pay rates are set, and employees are removed. He focusses on the primary actors involved, which in Oakland during the late sixties and early seventies were the city manager (by far the key actor), the various department heads, the city employee unions, the relevant specialist organizational units (chiefly the personnel department and the civil service commission), the elected officials, and citizen interest groups. The book contains several themes, which the author skillfully blends together. First and most important, the actors' interest in, responsibility for, and influence or leverage over various issues are widely dispersed. The city manager, for example, can simply veto his department heads' never-ceasing requests for more positions; he cannot, however, exercise the same control over the unions in collective bargaining, which means that the bargaining outcomes are more uncertain; and he may uphold an employee discharge (initially made by a department head) only to see his decision overturned by the civil service commission or the courts. Similarly, department heads seem to have little control over the recruitment, selection, classification, and rewarding of their employees. While this dispersion of authority may hinder efficiency (e.g., an incompetent employee may be reinstated and meritorious performance not rewarded), it may also be useful when the actors want to avoid making decisions: witness the buck-passing responses of city officials to minority interest groups pressuring for increased minority hiring. In general, the city manager wants to keep costs down, the department heads want to build larger empires, the unions want the keys to the city treasury, citizen interest groups want specific changes to serve their particular interests, employees want security and higherrated jobs, and Thompson presents a wealth of detail about how the various actors influence other actors in the pursuit of their objectives. Second, the actors frequently make personnel decisions in a substantial information vacuum. For instance, nobody in city hall really knows: if the selection criteria are directly related to job performance; what excellent performance is in most city jobs, let alone how to measure it; if there is a direct connection between the number of police officers and the reported crime rate; if all 3500 city employees are accurately classified; and so on. Third, the standard prescriptions about public personnel policies and procedures ("use validated selection methods," "provide equal pay for equal work," etc.) tend to be overlooked because of the organizational realities in which personnel decisions are made. As Thompson notes, the costs involved in meeting the prescriptive literature's requirements usually are prohibitive; so the prescriptions essentially are useless to practitioners (and I suspect the same could be said of the private sector). These prohibitive costs also mean that the personnel information vacuum will continue. This book is a case study, and therein lie both its greatest strength and weakness. Its long suit is the intensiveness of detail presented about the actors' interactions over a variety of specific issues. We learn, for example: how a part-time recreation employee discharged for being a "druggie" got himself reinstated by mobilizing the support of a neighborhood newspaper and the citizenry in the neighborhood where he worked; how the police union convinced a

Study of fauna and public perception of captive animals at Peshawar Zoo, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Daud kamal Syed, I. Khan, I. Ullah et al.

Zoos are commonly regarded as the best place for amusement and enjoyment. A large number of people vigor to zoos to see different animals with their family and friends. The current study investigated "fauna and public opinion of caged animals at Peshawar Zoo" using a well-designed Questionnaire. Questionnaires include questions regarding the zoo environment, public behavior toward animals, and the zoo's involvement in the conservation of endangered species, animal health and enclosure upkeep, and visitor services such as drinking water, a café, and washrooms. People were also polled to choose which species they preferred and which animals they would want to see at the Peshawar Zoo. The responders were then asked whether they had any thoughts or recommendations for zoo upgrades. 198 visitors were questioned both inside and outside the zoo. As a result, it is apparent that the Peshawar Zoo is an excellent location for leisure and recreation. Visitors were excited to view the various animals and were pleased with the zoo's administration. It is specious that the majority of visitors were unaware of the zoo's role in the conservation of endangered animals. A variety of valuable suggestions can aid in the development of the Peshawar Zoo. The concerned authorities should take notes on the methods of education and modes of information used by the zoo management.

Smell of Fire Increases Behavioural Realism in Virtual Reality: A Case Study on a Recreated MGM Grand Hotel Fire

Humayun Khan, Daniel Nilsson

Virtual reality allows creating highly immersive visual and auditory experiences, making users feel physically present in the environment. This makes it an ideal platform to simulate dangerous scenarios, including fire evacuation, and study human behaviour without exposing users to harmful elements. However, human perception of the surroundings is based on the integration of multiple sensory cues (visual, auditory, tactile, or/and olfactory) present in the environment. When some of the sensory stimuli are missing in the virtual experience, it can break the illusion of being there in the environment and could lead to actions that deviate from normal behaviour. In this work, we added an olfactory cue in a well-documented historic hotel fire scenario that was recreated in VR, and examined the effects of the olfactory cue on human behaviour. We conducted a between subject study on 40 naive participants. Our results show that the addition of the olfactory cue could increase behavioural realism. We found that 80% of the studied actions for the VR with olfactory cue condition matched the ones performed by the survivors. In comparison, only 40% of the participants' actions for VR only condition were similar to the survivors.

Accelerating pathways to leadership for underrepresented groups in STEM

2030STEM Collaboration, Jennifer D. Adams, Cameron Bess et al.

The vision of 2030STEM is to address systemic barriers in institutional structures and funding mechanisms required to achieve full inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and accelerate leadership pathways for individuals from underrepresented populations across STEM sectors. 2030STEM takes a systems-level approach to create a community of practice that can test, learn and promote programs and policies that affirm and value cultural identities in STEM. To achieve parity and full representation in the STEM workforce, a variety of changes are needed across academia and STEM professional industries (e.g., business, finance, biotech, government) to accelerate underrepresented groups into positions of leadership throughout the STEM ecosystem. Through a series of subject matter interviews, roundtables, and curated analysis four major themes have surfaced, which, if implemented, could exponentially accelerate the creation of critical pathways to leadership, break down pre-existing barriers and biases, intentionally elevate the voices, value, and research of underrepresented groups in STEM, and implement new structural strategies at scale. This white paper provides a summary of innovative new practices designed to accelerate inclusion, including expanding on known global toolkits, new funding strategies, and the structural changes required throughout various STEM professions to propel pathways to leadership for underrepresented groups.

R.A. Sureshbalaji, Nachal Annamalai, P. Nivetha

Purpose: The present study is aimed to observe the differential response of pranayama in reducing high sensitivity C-reactive protein and creatinine kinase levels among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in comparison to control patients. Material and Methods: An intervention study was done by enrolling 100 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients who were managed by therapeutics. The participants were divided into intervention and non-intervention group with 50 each sample. The intervention was in the form of sequenced yogic practices for 6 weeks. The pre-intervention and post-intervention inflammatory maker levels were estimated along with lung function estimation. Results: The result was analyzed by descriptive statistics. The mean C-reactive protein, serum creatinine kinase value decreased from 9.53 to 7.85mg/L and from 145.01 to 140.57 U/L respectively following 6 weeks of yogic practices intervention. The observed values were found to be statistically significant (p=<0.05). Conclusion: The statistically significant reduction in inflammatory makers, C-reactive protein and creatinine kinase level following 6-week yogic practices in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patient suggests including such yogic interventions in the regular management protocols of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

Tourism and third sector organizations: synergies for responsible tourism development?

Paula Guerreiro Martins , Ana Maria Alves Ferreira , Carlos Manuel Costa

The main aim of this paper is the analysis of the third sector arts, culture and local development organizations (TSO) participation in the context of tourism planning and development and to understand the characteristics of its connections to the tourism sector in the region of the Algarve, Portugal, a mature sun and sea destination. The methodological strategy is anchored in a mix-methods approach applying qualitative techniques such as semi-structured interviews (n=40), document analysis, non-participant observation, and adopting a triangulation approach. There have been few empirical studies that analyse this theme, thus, identifying the forms of participation that the third sector can adopt and their characteristics and specificities constitutes one of the main contributions of this research towards reinforcing the conceptual framework in the context of responsible tourism development. The results revealed that third sector organizations display a set of characteristics that position them as active agents in the tourist planning and development processes by operating on areas such as the promotion of cultural and artistic expression, research and inventory of cultural and natural resources, raising awareness of those resources and also by actively participating in supply structuring and provision of tourist services.

The Galactic Chemical Evolution of phosphorus observed with IGRINS

G. Nandakumar, N. Ryde, M. Montelius et al.

Phosphorus (P) is considered to be one of the key elements for life, making it an important element to look for in the abundance analysis of spectra of stellar systems. Yet, there exists only a handful of spectroscopic studies to estimate the P abundances and investigate its trend across a range of metallicities. We have observed full HK band spectra at a spectral resolving power of R=45,000 with IGRINS instrument. Abundances are determined using SME in combination with 1D MARCS stellar atmosphere models. The investigated sample of stars have reliable stellar parameters estimated using optical FIES spectra (GILD; Jönsson et al. in prep.). In order to determine the P abundances from the 16482.92 Angstrom P line, we take special care of the CO($ν=7-4$) blend. We determine the C, N, O abundances from atomic carbon and a range of non-blended molecular lines (CO, CN, OH) which are aplenty in the H band region of K giant stars, assuring an appropriate modelling of the blending CO($ν=7-4$) line. We present [P/Fe] vs [Fe/H] trend for 38 K giant stars in the metallicity range of -1.2 dex $<$ [Fe/H] $<$ 0.4 dex. We find that our trend matches well with the compiled literature sample of prominently dwarf stars and limited number of giant stars. Our trend is found to be higher by $\sim$ 0.05 - 0.1 dex compared to the theoretical chemical evolution trend in Cescutti et al. 2012 resulting from core collapse supernova (type II) of massive stars with the P yields from Kobayashi et al. (2006) arbitrarily increased by a factor of 2.75. Thus the enhancement factor might need to be $\sim$ 0.05 - 0.1 dex higher to match our trend. We also find an empirically determined primary behaviour for phosphorus. Furthermore, the phosphorus abundance is found to be elevated by $\sim$ 0.6 - 0.9 dex in two metal poor s-enriched stars compared to the theoretical chemical evolution trend.

An Ethnographic Enquiry Towards the Influences and Behaviour on Food Choices of Long-Term Tourists in Urban Malaysia

Mayukh Dewan

Despite its importance, food habits of an individual in a foreign location has not received adequate attention in Asian research. Most of the previous studies were based in the US and Europe and focused on the students from a specific discipline (Greaney et al., 2009, LaCaille et al., 2011) or specific backgrounds (Nelson et al., 2009, Cluskey and Grobe 2009). Since the host culture is an important influence towards food consumption behaviour, this ethnographic study provides a unique, Malaysian perspective on international student’s food consumption patterns. The objective in this research was to ethnographically explore the food choice behaviour and influences on international students in private universities around Subang Jaya, Malaysia. Participant observation along with semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with the respondents. The various emerging themes of the food consumption behaviour of international long-term education tourists included food neophilia, stress eating, convenience and health and the influences comprised of price, social networking sites, friends, and word of mouth. Difference in age between researcher and other international students along with the limitations of conducting semi-structured interviews were some of the major limitations. This research can help policymakers make informed choices regarding sustainable developmental and tourism marketing for similar long-term tourists. It can help sensitize local population on the challenges and issues faced by foreign students in a new country. Furthermore, this can help the F&B industry as well as the society get a deeper understanding on how to cater to foreign long-term tourists.

Change of psychophysiological indices in female students of creative occupations

L.G. Korobeinikova, M.S.A. Djamil, W. Cynarski et al.

Purpose: studying the dynamics of psychophysiological indices of creative occupation female students. Маterial: the study involved 120 female students. Reactive qualities, level of static and dynamic equilibrium, orientational qualities, speed of operative thinking, volume of rote memorization, attention distribution, level of accuracy, attention speed and switching, accuracy of task performance were assessed. Results: a decrease in the indices of the accuracy of reproducing motion amplitude and a given value of effort, those of response to vertically falling object and those of static and dynamic equilibrium was revealed. An improvement in the dynamics of nervous processes and the ability to constructive praxis was noted. The decrease in the level of development of motor qualities, professional skills, physical fitness, and health is observed already in the 1st year of study. The authors believe that the pedagogical influences should be started from the 1st course and continued until the end of the study. In the process of physical education classes, the physical exercises aimed at improving the professionally significant psychophysiological properties of students should be used. It is they that restrain the negative effect of increasing the intensity of educational classes simultaneously contributing to an increase in the development level of almost all motor qualities and health. Conclusions: uneven decrease of most psychophysiological indices negatively affects both the level of female student motor preparation and professional abilities of the future designers. The findings give ground for the development of the methods for improving motor qualities and psychophysiological properties professionally significant for students-designers. Taking into account the future profession specifics and the health indices will allow more precise planning of the content of physical education classes.
