Unmanned Aerial Vehicle–Unmanned Ground Vehicle Centric Visual Semantic Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Framework with Remote Interaction for Dynamic Scenarios

Chang Liu, Yang Zhang, Liqun Ma et al.

In this study, we introduce an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) centric visual semantic simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework that integrates RGB–D cameras, inertial measurement units (IMUs), and a 5G–enabled remote interaction module. Our system addresses three critical limitations in existing approaches: (1) Distance constraints in remote operations; (2) Static map assumptions in dynamic environments; and (3) High–dimensional perception requirements for UAV–based applications. By combining YOLO–based object detection with epipolar–constraint-based dynamic feature removal, our method achieves real-time semantic mapping while rejecting motion artifacts. The framework further incorporates a dual–channel communication architecture to enable seamless human–in–the–loop control over UAV–Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) teams in large–scale scenarios. Experimental validation across indoor and outdoor environments indicates that the system can achieve a detection rate of up to 75 frames per second (FPS) on an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier using YOLO–FASTEST, ensuring the rapid identification of dynamic objects. In dynamic scenarios, the localization accuracy attains an average absolute pose error (APE) of 0.1275 m. This outperforms state–of–the–art methods like Dynamic–VINS (0.211 m) and ORB–SLAM3 (0.148 m) on the EuRoC MAV Dataset. The dual-channel communication architecture (Web Real–Time Communication (WebRTC) for video and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) for telemetry) reduces bandwidth consumption by 65% compared to traditional TCP–based protocols. Moreover, our hybrid dynamic feature filtering can reject 89% of dynamic features in occluded scenarios, guaranteeing accurate mapping in complex environments. Our framework represents a significant advancement in enabling intelligent UAVs/UGVs to navigate and interact in complex, dynamic environments, offering real-time semantic understanding and accurate localization.

Potential of business uncertainty indicators in forecasting economic activity: The case of Russia

Inna S. Lola, Dmitry G. Asoskov

This study investigates the utility of business uncertainty indicators as predictive tools for forecasting economic activity in the context of Russia. In an era characterized by global economic volatility and geopolitical shifts, understanding the dynamics of economic uncertainty and its impact on overall economic performance is of paramount importance. The study utilizes a comprehensive dataset based on the results of business tendency surveys in Russia, spanning the period from 2009 to the first half of 2024. Given the importance of uncertainty in shaping economic outcomes, the central research question of this study is: can uncertainty indicators predict business activity in Russia or not? To address this question, we compared two alternative approaches to calculating business uncertainty: the ex‑ante approach, which uses the business community’s assessments of future business trends to measure uncertainty as the dispersion of opinions expressed, and the ex‑post approach, which applies entrepreneurial assessments of both future and current trends to determine business uncertainty as the degree of deviation of entrepreneurial expectations from the real picture. National indicators and sectoral indicators were calculated for the mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry, construction, retail trade, wholesale trade and services. For most of the industries under consideration (except for the construction and service sector) and at the national level, the specifications of vector autoregression models that were effective for forecasting real indicators of economic activity, characterized by lower forecast errors compared to standard autoregressive models, were built. According to the results obtained, at the national level, when forecasting GDP, clear preference should be given to the ex‑post indicator.

A life cycle carbon dioxide equivalent emissions assessment of zero carbon building in hot semi-arid climate region: Case study

Samir Idrissi Kaitouni, Fatime-Zohra Gargab, Ahmed Tabit et al.

As societies are shifting toward carbon neutral environments, they are beginning to account for their carbon emissions. One of the primary contributors of greenhouse gas emissions and global warming is the building industry; therefore, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is one of the instruments that allows an assessment of the energy and the energy-related environmental impacts of the buildings from cradle to grave, according to ISO 14040. In this context, the aim of this research study is to assess the Life Cycle carbon dioxide (LC CO2eq) emissions over a 50-year-lifespan of a zero-carbon solar-powered earth-based building, built with carbon-free adobe bricks, in the hot semi-arid climate of Morocco. While research on the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions across the life cycle is crucial to determine the energy-intensive stages, this study looks into global tendencies of CO2eq emissions arising during the cradle-to-gate embodied (A1-3) and operational (B6) phases of a Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) case study, and which should be offset by carbon-free energy in order to abide by the ZCB definition. Results show that the LC CO2eq emissions of the eco-friendly zero-carbon residential building falls in 48.62 Kg CO2eq/m2.y., with an operational phase that has a share of around 93 % of global LC CO2eq emissions. In addition, when conventional construction materials such as concrete, bricks, and insulation materials are used as an alternative, embodied carbon emissions accounts for 6.3 kg CO2eq/m2.y. and is 85 % higher than the eco-friendly building, and it constitutes approximately 12.5 % of the overall carbon footprint. Moreover, the annual embodied and operational CO2eq emissions are offset by the 3.3-kWc-building-added-photovoltaic system. Hence, the conducted case study offers valuable insight into the good practices for decarbonization of Morocco's building stock.Through that case study, we aim to generate knowledge of net zero carbon buildings within the African continent, promoting the perks of decentralized solar energy in leaping forward a carbon-free electrified continent and valorizing the local construction techniques and knowhow in the building sector.

A Systematic Review of Responsible Sourcing in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Sectors of the UK

Sophie Ball, Colin A. Booth, Abhinesh Prabhakaran et al.

In recent years, responsible sourcing and procurement (including green supply chain management) across the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sectors have become notable contributors to sustainable construction strategies. This study aims to provide a systematic review of responsible sourcing literature across the AEC sectors of the UK to identify a suite of opportunities and obstacles to adopting ethical and environmentally supportive practices and to highlight avenues for further investigation. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) review process was adopted to identify, screen, and select (n = 80) articles (from 2000–2020) for review. Analysis of these articles identified the most frequently reported opportunities: (i) stakeholder value (40%); (ii) improved supply chain performance (39%); and (iii) competitive advantage (30%). The most frequently reported obstacles relating to the uptake of responsible sourcing are the following: (i) cost (44%); (ii) industry constraints (28%); and (iii) lack of frameworks/information and lack of awareness (25%). Given the industry importance of these themes, it is proposed that there is a necessity to explore and unravel the perceptions of industry experts about these issues so as to clarify the progress and possibilities for more widely adopting responsible sourcing across the AEC sector and, moreover, for clarifying their contribution towards achieving national and international sustainability targets (e.g., UN Sustainable Development Goals).

Impact of Eggshell Powder on the Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Lightweight Geopolymer

Nidhya Rathinavel, Kavikumaran Kannadasan, Abdul Aleem Mohamed Ismail et al.

Adopting proper waste management technology in the place of the construction industry to the extent possible to lower the production of new materials and intern reduces the environmental impact pertaining to the industry. In this work, eggshell powder (ESP; waste from the poultry industry) and fly ash (FA; waste from combustion of coal) were utilized as precursors for producing geopolymer and to substitute conventional cement-based construction materials. Three different weight percentage ratios of precursors, namely, 90FA:10ESP, 80FA:20ESP, and 70FA:30ESP were reinforced with two different weight percentages, namely, 15 and 30 wt% of paddy straw in the presence of suitable combinations of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide to obtain lightweight geopolymer panels. Results received from different analytical tests, namely, density, water absorption, compressive strength, and flexural strength infer that the incorporation of ESP enhances the performance of the geopolymer products to a considerable extent. The specimen sample made using 70FA:30ESP in the absence of paddy straw reinforcement possesses a compressive strength value of 15.64 MPa, which is higher than that of paddy straw reinforced panels. It was observed that there was a reverse trend noticed in the case of flexural behavior on reinforcement of paddy straw, namely, 15 wt% possesses a higher value than that of the panel (70FA:30ESP) made using in the absence of reinforcement. The lowest thermal conductivity value was observed at 0.0633 W/m·K for the sample 90FA:10ESP reinforced with 30% paddy straw. Data from different studies infer that using ESP and paddy straw reinforcement influences strength properties and thermal conductivity. The present study indicates valid information related to the using biowastes for the production of insulation materials and environmental preservation and energy conservation.

Reflection of Character Creation in Ashura Poems: A Case Study of the Poems of Yazd Poets

Fazlollah Rezaeiardani, Mahdi Sadeghi

In the present study, with the aim of investigating the personality of Ashurai poems, the character traits in this type of poetry have been investigated using a descriptive-analytical method. The ritual poet describes the character of this incident with the help of components such as praise of great men, the revival of Ashura culture, and identification. The behavior and morals of the characters are based on Ashurai poems and they perform appropriate actions in different situations, as they have a convincing reason for any change in their behavior and show a logical reaction when dealing with incidents. In this type of poem, the characters of the story are not created by the poet, but what is depicted is considered in the fictional world of the poem and the outside world of the poem and in the context of the events. The expression of Ashurai characters, sometimes with interpretation and sometimes without interpretation, makes the reader familiar with the nature of the character. This is where the reflection of the inner characteristics of the Ashurai character draws the fluid flow of the mind to Ashura culture. IntroductionThe character is the central factor around which the whole story revolves. Other factors get their objectivity, perfection, meaning, and concept and even the reason for their existence from the personality factor. Religious figures have red lines approaching them is not for everyone. In fact, the character is the industry that gives soul and life to the story and the reader demands it. The main character of the ritual poem opens the knots and becomes the main character of the narrative and the center of the power of the audience. Secondary characters in Ashurai poems are attracted to the main characters and accept their ideals.  Materials and MethodsIn the present descriptive-analytical study, the personality analysis of Ashura poems has been carried out with a case study of the poems of Yazd religious poets in the post-revolutionary period using the survey and library approach.  Research FindingsThe Ashurai poet does not seek the idealism and mythologizing of the Ashurai character in ritual poetry, but the idealistic character himself. With this initiative, he revives the broken relationship between the individual and the community, and finally implements the social construction with a symbolic order. The revival of Ashura culture, identification, formation of collective identity, anthropology, etc. are the most important basis for the creation of Ashurai characters; therefore, the main characters of Ashurai poetry find a social face. In other words, the characters of Ashurai poetry are dynamic and all-around characters that cause the dynamism and mobility of the society, and there is no trace of any "standard" or "static" character in these poems. The Ashurai poet recreates the characters of Karbala by looking at the culture of Ashura, the people of the society, and the real characters, together with the tools of his imagination and artistic talent. He puts all the elements of the speech in direct relation to the action and reaction of the character in order to objectify his thoughts and emotions with this method and to train "individual" and "type" characters with his Ashurai speech.  Discussion of Results and ConclusionsThe expression of Ashura characters, sometimes with interpretation and sometimes without interpretation, makes the reader familiar with the nature of the character. This is where the reflection of the inner characteristics of the Ashura personality draws the fluid flow of the mind to the Ashura culture. The Ashurai poet recreates Ashurai’s personality by looking at Ashura and conscious or unconscious discourses. The characterization of religious and Ashura poems has differences from the characterization of other poems. The difference between Ashurai characters and myths is that the characters of Ashurai poetry are reasonable and acceptable, which is considered one of the strengths of this type of poetry. The main criterion of being a character is his determining role in the plot of words and stories. It may be that during the events, depending on the circumstances of the event, the words, actions, and behavior of the dynamic characters in Ashurai poems cannot be predicted, but these changes work together with a pattern of behavior and this factor itself is proof of human dynamism. The character in these poems is alive, and the Ashurai poet, unlike Ferdowsi, does not try to create a superhuman or holy character. This is not a sign of the poet's lack of artistic or visual talent in creating a character, but rather, he narrates the real self of the character. The formation of events and moving forward are other characteristics that can be seen in the characters of this type of poetry. The poet establishes a coherent relationship between the characters. In other words, the poet, with his special intelligence and elegance, recounts the prevailing thoughts and opinions of the society through the use of various elements such as action, dialogue, environment, space, etc. It should be noted that in Ashurai poetry, all the verses are written for a character from Ahl al-Bayt.

COVID-19 related stressors and mental health outcomes of expatriates in international construction

Lili Gao, Lili Gao, Xiaopeng Deng et al.

The construction industry is labor-intensive, and employees' mental health has a significant impact on occupational health and job performance. In particular, expatriates in international projects under the normalization of the epidemic are under greater pressure than domestic project employees. This paper aims to explore the association of stressors and mental health in international constructions during COVID-19. Furthermore, test the mediation effect of psychological resilience and moderating effort of international experience in this relationship. A survey of 3,091 expatriates in international construction projects was conducted. A moderating mediation model was employed to test the effect of psychological resilience and international experience. Then, statistical analysis with a bootstrap sample was used to test the mediation effect of the model, and a simple slope was used to test the moderating effect. Moderated by experience, the slope of the effect of stressors on psychological resilience changed from −1.851 to −1.323. And the slope of the effect of psychological resilience on mental health outcomes reduced by about 0.1. This suggests that experience is one of the buffering factors for individual psychological resilience of expatriates to regulate stress. Theoretically, this study verifies the mediation effect of psychological resilience between COVID-19 related stressors and mental health outcomes and importance of an expatriate's experience in an international assignment. Practically, this study provides guidelines for international construction enterprises and managers to make an assistant plan for expatriates during this pandemic time and pay more attention to their psychological status. The research also suggests that the best choice for challenging assignments is choosing a more experienced employee.

Market Concentration, Market Power, and Firm Growth of Construction Companies

Yumou Wang, Shilong Li

China’s economy has been transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a stage of high-quality development that is called “new normal,” and China’s construction industry plays a pillar part in China’s economy. Nevertheless, the industry is large but not strong. This labour-intensive industry suffers from low concentration and fierce competition. Based on the organizational theory, which shows how market structure contributes to the growth of industry, this study aims to explore the impact of market concentration and market power on firm’s turnover and profit. Using statistical analysis and panel data of 37 China’s construction companies from 2009 to 2018, this study proposes and calculates the market concentration (CR) and the market power (MP) of China’s companies. Then the augmented Cobb–Douglas production function and OLS regression are used to explore the growth factors of China’s construction industry. The results show that the market concentration increases both the turnover and profit of construction firms. However, market power increases the profit of construction firms while decreases the turnover. In addition, the companies that are China’s non-state-owned have overseas income or are civil engineering and construction have more advantages in the growth of the construction industry in “quality”. This study provides a reference to understand the structures of the construction industries and the structural effect on the growth of different types of firms and could be replicated in other countries with the similar situation.

Health and Safety Consideration in the Procurement of Public Construction Projects in Ghana

Elijah Frimpong Boadu, Riza Yosia Sunindijo, Cynthia Changxin Wang

This study explored the extent to which health and safety (H&S) are considered in the procurement of public sector projects in Ghana. This is based on the background that procurement decisions have implications for project H&S management. The enormous size of public procurement projects offers opportunities for public clients to influence the behaviour of the construction market including the promotion of H&S through procurement. To date, no study has fully assessed the extent of H&S considerations in procurement decisions for public sector construction projects in Ghana. To fill this gap, this research has provided an evidence-based assessment of H&S considerations in the various stages of the procurement process for public sector projects in Ghana. Through a questionnaire survey, data were collected from construction industry professionals in Ghana. The data were subjected to statistical analysis to evaluate the extent of H&S considerations. The findings suggest that H&S is given low priority in the procurement of public projects, because clear project objectives relating to H&S are not set, and adequate consideration is not given to H&S at the various procurement stages. Based on the findings, this research has made recommendations to promote H&S in public procurement in Ghana.

BIM-Based Pavement Management Tool for Scheduling Urban Road Maintenance

Cristina Oreto, Luigi Massotti, Salvatore Antonio Biancardo et al.

The latest advancements in road asphalt materials and construction technologies have increased the difficulty for engineers to select the appropriate pavement design solution with consideration of proper timing for maintenance planning. On the other hand, Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools allow practitioners to efficiently store and manage large amounts of data, supporting decision making in road asphalt pavement design and management. The present work focused on the elaboration of a BIM-based maintenance analysis tool for the specific evaluation of several condition indicators and the selection of proper maintenance solutions designed to include alternative materials and advanced recycling technologies. A traditional BIM workflow was integrated with additional user-defined property sets to investigate the need for maintenance at the present date and predict the degradation curve of the condition indicators through the least square interpolation of time series of data. The analysis tool also provided the selection of available pavement alternatives from a library of designed solutions based on their compliance with project-specific constraints (maximum budget, minimum useful life, and availability of secondary raw materials and in-place recycling technologies). The proposed BIM tool aims to be a practical and dynamic way to integrate maintenance planning considerations into road pavement design, encouraging the use of digital tools in the road industry and ultimately supporting a pavement maintenance decision-making process oriented towards a circular economy.

CREATION OF KIEV PLANT OF AUTOMATIC MACHINES IN 1933-1937

Nataliya Annenkova

In the years 1928-1932, the Ukrainian SSR became a region whose industry became a priority for industrialization in accordance with the relevant plans of the federal government. However, the results of this process in Soviet Ukraine did not bring the expected results. Because of this factor, the role of Ukrainian industry in the union plan of industrialization has changed from avantgarde to ballast. One of the steps of the government of the USSR aimed at restoring the original idea was to creation of the plant automatic machines on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR. For the sake of his sake, he has done a great job in the saturation of the region and in the wilderness, and thus, the solution to part of theproblem of the lack of manufacturing capacity of Ukrainian machinery manufacturing plants, which arose due to the failure to comply with the first five-year plan. Meanwhile, the further development of the industrialization of the USSR showed the need to organize the production of automatic machine tools in the entire Soviet country. As a result, the construction of a suitable plant in Kiev has been revised in the direction of enlargement. However, not only was the number of organizational mistakes made at the organization stage of the plant not eliminated, but new ones were made. As a result, the plant of automatic machine tools in Kiev was introduced into the planned production volume with almost three years delay. For this reason, before the beginning of World War II, the Soviet machine industry branch did not receive the required amount of appropriate equipment and remained dependent on this product range from the more industrialized countries in the world.
