Ergonomic analysis of book web services’ interfaces

Patrycja Kłodnicka, Dawid Matraszek

The success of a website depends heavily on the quality of an interface, which is assessed by a few factors: functionality, aesthetics, ergonomics. The objectives of this work's research are two web services dedicated to books, Lubimyczytać and Bookworm. In this study two experiments were conducted: eye tracking and a cognitive journey. In both cases, participants received a few problems to solve. Participants also filled out surveys that asked for their feedback. The research revealed issues with usability of the both interfaces. Lubimyczytać was found to be the winner of this comparison. In order to draw correct conclusions, it was necessary to take into consideration different aspects of examined applications: readability, web page’s logical layout. Mentioned points made tasks faster and easier to complete.

Expression of interferon-stimulated genes, but not polymorphisms in the interferon α/β receptor 2 gene, is associated with coronavirus disease 2019 mortality

Berliana Hamidah, Cennikon Pakpahan, Laksmi Wulandari et al.

Excessive inflammatory response is a hallmark of severe COVID-19. This study investigated the associations between interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) expression, genetic variation in the interferon α/β receptor 2 (IFNAR2) gene, and COVID-19 mortality. We investigated 67 patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19. Of them, 22 patients (32.8 %) died because of COVID-19. We examined the expression of ISGs in total RNA of peripheral whole blood. We observed a significant increase in the expression of all ISGs examined in non-surviving patients, indicating a heightened interferon type I signaling activation in non-survived patients. Subsequently, we analyzed whether the increase in ISGs expression was correlated with polymorphism within the IFNAR2 gene. Intriguingly, no significant association was observed between IFNAR2 gene polymorphism and COVID-19 mortality. Similarly, no association was noted between the IFNAR2 and ISGs expression levels.Overall, our data showed that higher ISGs expression, which presumably indicates heightened interferon type I activation, is associated with COVID-19 mortality.

Evolution of Medical Modeling and 3D Printing in Microvascular Midface Reconstruction: Literature Review and Experience at MD Anderson Cancer Center

John W. Shuck, Rene D. Largo, Matthew M. Hanasono et al.

Reconstruction of the midface represents a challenge for reconstructive microsurgeons given the formidable task of restoring both aesthetics and functionality. In particular, preservation of proper globe positioning and maintaining normal vision are as important as restoring the proper projection of the midface and enabling a patient to speak and eat as normally as possible. The introduction of virtual surgical planning (VSP) and medical modeling has revolutionized bony reconstruction of the craniofacial skeleton; however, the overwhelming majority of studies have focused on mandibular reconstruction. Here, we introduce some novel advances in utilizing VSP for bony reconstruction of the midface. The present review aims (1) to provide a review of the literature on the use of VSP in midface reconstruction and (2) to provide some insights from the authors’ early experience.

Thermal Properties of Insulating Materials made from Hemp Fibres

Nistorac Andreea, Ailenei Eugen Constantin, Isopescu Dorina Nicolina et al.

The ecological footprint of residential buildings has seen a significant increase due to the permanent desire to improve comfort and aesthetics. The construction and rehabilitation of the existing building stock in accordance with the European standards known as “passive house”, implies the minimization of external energy consumption. Thus, the thermal insulation materials used to reduce heat transfer play an essential role in the effort to reduce the environmental footprint generated by residential buildings. Hemp is an important candidate for making heat-insulating materials. Hemp stems find their use as basic fibres inside non-woven materials used to produce heat-insulating materials with applications in the field of construction or composite materials. The energy balance between the amount of energy saved and that of obtaining heat-insulating materials, as well as the type of raw materials used for their manufacture, is a critical factor for achieving the goal of reducing ecological impact.

Training the Political Imaginary: Approaching the Discussion about the Emergency Laws through a Civil Defense Exercise (Germany, 1966)

Jandra Böttger

The 1966 German civil defense exercise Fallex 66 differed from other military exercises held on a regular basis during the Cold War. Firstly, because it took place in the recently completed government bunker. And secondly, because the intensively disputed Emergency laws should be tested by a fictional «emergency parliament». This paper follows the hypothesis that the fusion of fictional and real elements in the exercised scenario, combined with a bodily and emotional immersion, had the power to influence the discussion about the Emergency laws. At the cutting surface between Aesthetics and Political Theory, this paper attempts to disentangle the complex net of fictional and imaginary dimensions at work in the exercise Fallex 66 and its reception.

Aesthetic Debunking and the Transcendental Argument of the Novel

Jonathan Weinberg, Adam Gjesdal

Gilbert Plumer has recently argued in his (2017) that psychologically rich novels offer the reader an opportunity to draw a transcendental inference: what seems to us believable about the psychology of the characters, can be inferred to be actually true about real human psychology. We propose, first, to disambiguate a key term of art in Plumer’s argument, “believable”. Given that disambiguation, the empirically contingent nature of one of Plumer’s premises comes into view. We raise two main lines of empirically-motivated debunking arguments against that premise, drawing particularly upon the psychological literatures about processing fluency, and the illusion of explanatory depth. We then conclude with some further implications for naturalistic approaches to aesthetics, and the relevance of such debunking arguments.

Transcendence through Illumination: Marginalized Identity Re-valued as Art and Literature

Karly Berezowsky

provide a critical analysis of the female identity of E. Luminata, written by Chilean writer, Diamela Eltit. This essay will examine how E. Luminata fits into the world of autobiographical feminism, with ties to multiculturalism, and world literature. Her series of artistic scenes in the town square allow her to challenge standardized notions of beauty’s ephemerality and permanence. Within the text, E. Luminata uses her art to protest Pinochet’s military government during the 1980’s. E. Luminata actively uses art, aesthetics, and her sexualized identity to create an argument against the “grotesque” nature of the military regime. As such, her artistic protests, read within a piece of translated literature, help readers to define the nature of the aesthetic experience of womanhood and contemplate personal agency, desire, and cultural possessiveness. Her identity is manifested through the contradictory binary of the natural and the artificial, since she presents herself as a spectacle, for others to perceive. By doing so, she deconstructs her own objectification within the novel.

Multiple expulsions. Affective and material evictions in Calais

Francesca Ansaloni

If we regard expulsions as the abrupt interruption along the territorialisation process of any body in search of refuge, we could see displaced people and migrants as those figures that have to cope with multiple expulsions until they can build a less vulnerable and precarious territory. Drawing on an ethnographic fieldwork in the makeshift camp of Calais known as the Jungle, I outline a relentless movement of expulsion-inclusion, which is both material and affective and operates on different dimensions. In the Jungle of Calais, from March 2015 to October 2016 lived thousands of people coming mainly from Afghanistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Pakistan, who created a city-like system together with volunteers from UK and France. Both the French state and the aid groups built their own territories by establishing different kind of relations with the residents of the Jungle, thus contributing to (at least temporarily) stabilise or destabilise their search for a territory of their own and engaging in less visible practices of expulsion.

Logica dei sensi. Estetica e teoria della conoscenza in Benedetto Croce

Rosalia Peluso

This essay offers a general interpretation of Benedetto Croce’s aesthetics as a theory of knowledge. It takes its title from Croce’s famous work in the 1931, Le Due Scienze Mondane; l’Estetica e l’Economica, in which Croce describes the process of development of modern aesthetics as the affirmation of a logica dei sensi (logic of senses); a definition developed from the “poetic logic” in Vico’s Scienza Nuova. The essay starts with a comparison with Gilles Deleuze’s logic of sense, or thought of the surface, to propose the argument that Croce can be acknowledged as one of the authors of the Nietzschean reversal of Platonism. This argument is supported by the anti-metaphysical character of Croce’s thought, who has always pursued the aim of overcoming cognitive dualism (body and mind, external and internal, nature and spirit) to give new dignity to the sense in all of its complexity and, by consequence, to the world. Aesthetics, in Croce’s solution, possesses two philosophical meanings: because its better epistemological definition – particularly in the connection between intuition and expression – provides advantages in other fields of philosophy; in addition, aesthetics is the initial form of spiritual life.

The New Visual Testimonial: Narrative, Authenticity, and Subjectivity in Emerging Commercial Photographic Practice

Heather Morton

By studying the cultural and aesthetic impact of increasingly pervasive digital technologies and mass amateurization, this paper examines the ramifications of the networked information economy on professional photographic practice and considers the concomitant implications for the photographic classroom. Using the framework of convergence culture as per the writings of Yochai Benkler, Henry Jenkins, Mark Deuze, and Axel Bruns, the impact of accessible and instantaneous image creation and dispersal are explored. Given the rise of consumer engagement in brand co-creation on social media platforms, we can observe massive changes to professional practice in areas such as aesthetics, and the erosion of previous sustainable business models. Indeed, as traditional notions of “expertise” shift from technological prowess to narrative and disseminative abilities, the effects on commercial practice and photographic education need to be addressed. This paper argues that there are three emerging priorities for commercial image use: narrative ability, authenticity, and subjectivity and suggests initial steps in their pedagogical application. By acknowledging these transformations, this paper explores the idea that students need to harness technique, social media influence, adaptability, subjectivity, and storytelling power in order to better serve emerging image-based needs in commercial spaces.

GAJAH DALAM TERAKOTA MAJAPAHIT

Prima Yustana

Elephant’s manifestation in the shape of Majapahit’s terracotta more interesting with aesthetic approach. The artifact is an discovery of archeologists’ in Trowulan which is estimated as a city center of Majapahit Kingdom. Many manifestations of the elephant are interested to be observed. Many findings, so far, will be observed especially from art. To increase the accuracy in the analysis process, data searching is conducted to the relief on Hindu and Buddha temples, so, hopefully, it can be understood the background why the animal appears in the Indonesian art and, especially, why there is also the manifestation of the animal in the shape of terracotta in Trowulan. Elephant manifestation in terracotta is considered to have many functions and symbolical meanings in religion. Terracotta has been known as an ancient human creation. The using of terracotta in Indonesia achieved its triumph in the classic period which was 13–15 century A.D., along with the golden age of Majapahit Kingdom. The materials in the research use the basic of aesthetics and iconography sciences because the artifact has art shape structure related to beauty and aesthetics. To find out the functions and the meanings in the relation religious activities, the discussions are focused in terracotta artifact manifested in statue and other things so iconographic science very supports to find out what meaning exist in the elephant manifestation. Elephant, in its shape, is manifested realistic and deformatif. Both manifestations have the background of the belief from Trowulan society in Majapahit period, which had Hindu and Buddha in their religion. In the period, elephant was considered to have symbol of strength, virility and wisdom. Besides that, elephant was also the vehicle of God Indra, named Airavata. Elephant is also the symbol of Budha’s birth story (Jataka). Elephant was also considered as God, called Shri-gaja. The last, elephant was also considered as a symbol of social status and fertility because elephant was a king’s pet and was used for war,so only the rich persons were able to have the animal. Keywords: Elephant, Majapahit’s terracotta, function and meaning.

Scarsa visibilità in provincia. Nebbia laboratorio di cambiamento

Sebastiano Citroni

Foucault and the Ethics of Eating

Chloë Taylor

In a 1983 interview, Michel Foucault contrasts our contemporary interest in sexual identity with the ancient Greek preoccupation with diet, arguing that sex has replaced food as the privileged medium of self-constitution in the modern West. In the same interview, Foucault argues that modern liberation movements should return to the ancient model of ethics, of which diet was a prime example, as aesthetics or self-transformative practice. In this paper I take up Foucault's argument with respect to the Animal Liberation Movement and the dietetics of ethical vegetarianism. Contra Foucault, I suggest that diet has not been replaced by sexuality in the modern West, and that food choices, along with and intertwined with sexuality, continue to function as practices of self-constitution in both disciplinary and aesthetic fashions. I then consider the implications of this argument for the Animal Liberation Movement, exploring ways in which it might (and to some degree already does) take on aesthetic rather than moral strategies in order to pursue what Foucault once described as “an ethics of acts and their pleasures which would be able to take into account the pleasure of the other.”
