Interfacial Electronic Structure Engineering on Molybdenum Sulfide for Robust Dual-pH Hydrogen Evolution

Mingqiang Liu, Jia-ao Wang, Gui-Gen Wang et al.

Abstract Molybdenum disulfide, as an electronic highly-adjustable catalysts material, tuning its electronic structure is crucial to enhance its intrinsic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Nevertheless, there are yet huge challenges to the understanding and regulation of the surface electronic structure of molybdenum disulfide-based catalysts. Here we address these challenges by tuning its electronic structure of phase modulation synergistic with interfacial chemistry and defects from phosphorus or sulfur implantation, and we then successfully design and synthesize electrocatalysts with the multi-heterojunction interfaces (e.g., 1T0.81-MoS2@Ni2P), demonstrating superior HER activities and good stabilities with a small overpotentials of 38.9 and 98.5 mV at 10 mA/cm2, a low Tafel slopes of 41 and 42 mV/dec in acidic as well as alkaline surroundings, outperforming commercial Pt/C catalyst and other reported Mo-based catalysts. Theoretical calculation verified that the incorporation of metallic-phase and intrinsic HER-active Ni-based materials into molybdenum disulfide could effectively regulate its electronic structure for making the bandgap narrower. Additionally, reduced nickel possesses empty orbitals, which is helpful for additional H binding ability. All these factors can decrease Mo-H bond strength, greatly improving the HER catalytic activity of these materials.

Ramblings (Memoirs) of a Scientist

Jay Fineberg

This paper is a faithful description of the author's career as a scientist, which often intersected that of Yves Couder. The emphasis of this paper is a true description of how the science that the author has been associated with really came about. Included are brief descriptions of the science associated with the research paths described. It is hoped that this rather accurate account may be amusing for the senior scientists among us and educational (and possibly useful) for younger scientists.

Elementary Excitations in Quantum Fermi Liquid

Nodar L. Tsintsadze, Levan N. Tsintsadze

Landau's theory of Fermi liquids is generalized by incorporating the de Broglie waves diffraction. A newly derived kinetic equation of the Fermi particles is used to derive a general dispersion relation and the excitation of zero sound is studied. A new mode is found due to the quantum correction. It is shown that the zero sound can exist even in an ideal Fermi gas. We also disclose a new branch of frequency spectrum due to the weak interaction.

Two-Level Chromophore and Irreversibility

Erich N. Wolf

This paper ("Two-Level Chromophore and Irreversibility", which can be found at arXiv:0804.0086) has been withdrawn by the author due to too many errors and misleading statements. This paper has been superseded by Section 2.11 and Chapter 7 (and other sections) of my Ph.D. dissertation ("Pressure Broadening and Pressure Shift of Diatomic Iodine at 675 nm"), which can be found at arXiv:0910.5053.

Singly differential cross sections with exchange for Ps-fragmentation

Hasi Ray

Ps ionization in Ps-atom scattering is of fundamental importance. The singly differential cross sections (SDCS) provides more accurate information to test a theory than integrated or total ionization cross section since the averaging over one parameter is not required. We evaluate the SDCS for Ps-ionization with respect to the longitudinal energy distribution of the break-up positron and electron in Ps-H and Ps-He scattering and compare them with the recently available experimental and theoretical data.

An easy reading of modern ether-drift experiments

M. Consoli, E. Costanzo

Modern ether-drift experiments look for a preferred reference frame searching for modulations of the beat note of two optical resonators that might be induced by the Earth's rotation. We present a compact formalism to evaluate the signal for most experiments where two arbitrary gaseous media fill the resonating cavities. Our predictions can provide useful hints to optimize the experimental set up and the data taking.

Elastoplastic equations with exact consistency of strains for the elastic strain frame and the velocities of points

Israel Solomeshch, Motel Solomeshch

We obtain an exact strain consistency equation for full, elastic, and plastic strain characteristics that have a clear physical meaning and are naturally related to stresses. The dynamic equations are represented in a form that does not use the objective stress rate. This obviates a number of essential difficulties in theory of finite elastoplastic strains.

A simple Solvable Model of Body Motion in a One-dimensional Resistive Medium

M. I. Molina

We introduce and solve in closed form a simple model of a macroscopic body propagating in a one-dimensional resistive medium at temperature T. The assumption of completely inelastic collisions between the body and the particles composing the medium leads to a resistive force that is opposite and proportional to the square of the body's velocity

Generic composition of boosts: an elementary derivation of the Wigner rotation

Rafael Ferraro, Marc Thibeault

Because of its apparent complexity, the discussion of Wigner rotation is usually reduced to the study of Thomas precession, which is too specific a case to allow a deep understanding of boost composition. However, by simple arguments and linear algebra, the result for the Wigner rotation is obtained straightforwardly, leading to a formula written in a manageable form, The result is exemplified in the context of the aberration of light.

Michelson-Morley experiment revisited

Bogusław Broda, Marcin Ostrowski

The idea of the Michelson-Morley experiment is theoretically reanalyzed. Elementary arguments are put forward to precisely derive the most general allowable form of the directional dependence of the one-way velocity of light.

Enhanced radiometric forces

Marco Scandurra

Crookes' Radiometer exploits thermal forces arising from temperature gradients in rarefied gases. This instrument has remained confined to educational physics because of the very small size of the radiometric effect and because of the necessity of an evacuated environment for operation. In this article the physics of this instrument is reviewed, different theories are compared and some general principles are derived. A method for enhancing the radiometric effect and for generating radiometric forces at higher pressures is proposed.
