A classically scale-invariant 6d analog of the 4d Yang-Mills theory is the 4-derivative (∇F )2 + F 3 gauge theory with two independent couplings. Motivated by a search for a perturbatively conformal but possibly non-unitary 6d models we compute the one-loop β-functions in this theory. A systematic way of doing this using the back-ground field method requires the (previously unknown) expression for the b6 Seeley-DeWitt coefficient for a generic 4-derivative operator; we derive it here. As an application, we also compute the one-loop β-function in the (1,0) supersymmetric (∇F )2 6d gauge theory con-structed in hep-th/0505082.

A proposal is made for a fundamental theory, in which the history of the universe is constituted of diverse views of itself. Views are attributes of events, and the theory’s only be-ables; they comprise information about energy and momentum transferred to an event from its causal past. A dynamics is proposed for a universe constituted of views of events, which combines the energetic causal set dynamics with a potential energy based on a measure of the distinctiveness of the views, called the variety (Smolin in Found Phys 46(6):736–758, 2016). As in the real ensemble formulation of quantum mechanics (Barbour and Smolin in Variety, complexity and cosmology, arXiv: hep-th/9203041), quantum pure states are associated to ensembles of similar events; the quantum potential of Bohm then arises from the variety.

A bstractFor N$$ \mathcal{N} $$-extended superconformal field theories in three spacetime dimensions (3D), with 1 ≤ N$$ \mathcal{N} $$ ≤ 3, we compute the two- and three-point correlation functions of the supercurrent and the flavour current multiplets. We demonstrate that supersymmetry imposes additional restrictions on the correlators of conserved currents as compared with the non-supersymmetric case studied by Osborn and Petkou in hep-th/9307010. It is shown that the three-point function of the supercurrent is determined by a single functional form consistent with the conservation equation and all the symmetry properties. Similarly, the three-point function of the flavour current multiplets is also determined by a single functional form in the N=1$$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ and N=3$$ \mathcal{N}=3 $$ cases. The specific feature of the N=2$$ \mathcal{N}=2 $$ case is that two independent structures are allowed for the three-point function of flavour current multiplets, but only one of them contributes to the three-point function of the conserved currents contained in these multiplets. Since the supergravity and super-Yang-Mills Ward identities are expected to relate the coefficients of the two- and three-point functions under consideration, the results obtained for 3D superconformal field theory are analogous to those in 2D conformal field theory. In addition, we present a new supertwistor construction for compactified Minkowski superspace. It is suitable for developing superconformal field theory on 3D spacetimes other than Minkowski space, such as S1× S2 and its universal covering space ℝ×S2$$ \mathrm{\mathbb{R}}\times {S}^2 $$.

A recent rank-4 tensor field model generating 4D simplicial manifolds has been proved to be renormalizable at all orders of perturbation theory (Ben Geloun and Rivasseau 2011 arXiv:1111.4997 [hep-th]). The model is built out of ϕ6 (ϕ6(1/2)), ϕ4 (ϕ4(1)) interactions and an anomalous term (ϕ4(2)). The β-functions of this model are evaluated at two and four loops. We find that the model is asymptotically free in the UV for both the main ϕ6(1/2) interactions, whereas it is safe in the ϕ4(1) sector. The remaining anomalous term turns out to possess a Landau ghost.
