Predicting New Concept-Object Associations in Astronomy by Mining the Literature

Jinchun Li, Y.-S. Ting, Alberto Accomazzi et al.

We construct a concept-object knowledge graph from the full astro-ph corpus through July 2025. Using an automated pipeline, we extract named astrophysical objects from OCR-processed papers, resolve them to SIMBAD identifiers, and link them to scientific concepts annotated in the source corpus. We then test whether historical graph structure can forecast new concept-object associations before they appear in print. Because the concepts are derived from clustering and therefore overlap semantically, we apply an inference-time concept-similarity smoothing step uniformly to all methods. Across four temporal cutoffs on a physically meaningful subset of concepts, an implicit-feedback matrix factorization model (alternating least squares, ALS) with smoothing outperforms the strongest neighborhood baseline (KNN using text-embedding concept similarity) by 16.8% on NDCG@100 (0.144 vs 0.123) and 19.8% on Recall@100 (0.175 vs 0.146), and exceeds the best recency heuristic by 96% and 88%, respectively. These results indicate that historical literature encodes predictive structure not captured by global heuristics or local neighborhood voting, suggesting a path toward tools that could help triage follow-up targets for scarce telescope time.

CompOSE reference manual

S. Typel, M. Oertel, T. Klähn et al.

CompOSE (CompStar Online Supernovae Equations of State) is an online repository of equations of state (EoS) for use in nuclear physics and astrophysics, e.g., in the description of compact stars or the simulation of core-collapse supernovae and neutron-star mergers, see https://compose.obspm.fr. The main services, offered via the website, are: a collection of data tables in a flexible and easily extendable data format for different EoS types and related physical quantities with extensive documentation and referencing; software for download to extract and to interpolate these data and to calculate additional quantities; webtools to generate EoS tables that are customized to the needs of the users and to illustrate dependencies of various EoS quantities in graphical form. This manual is an update of previous versions that are available on the CompOSE website, at arXiv:1307.5715 [astro-ph.SR], and that was originally published in the journal “Physics of Particles and Nuclei” with doi:10.1134/S1063779615040061. It contains a detailed description of the service, containing a general introduction as well as instructions for potential contributors and for users. Short versions of the manual for EoS users and providers will also be available as separate publications.

Insights into the phase-dependent cyclotron line feature in XTE J1946+274: An AstroSat and Insight-HXMT view

A. Devaraj, Rahul Sharma, S. Nagesh et al.

XTE J1946+274 is a Be/X-ray binary with a 15.8s spin period and 172 d orbital period. Using RXTE/PCA data of the 1998 outburst, a cyclotron line around 37 keV was reported. The presence of this line, its dependence on the pulse phase, and its variation with luminosity have been of some debate since. In this work, we present the reanalysis of two Astro-Ph observations: one made during the rising phase of the 2018 outburst and the other during the declining phase of the 2021 outburst. We also present a new analysis of the Insight-HXMT observations of the source at the peak of the 2018 outburst. We find the source to be spinning up over the course of the outburst and spinning down between the two outbursts. We report the presence of a higher cyclotron line energy using the 2018 Astro-Ph observation (∼45 keV) and 2018 Insight-HXMT observation (∼ 50 keV) and a line at ∼ 40 keV during the declining phase of the 2021 outburst using data from Astro-Ph. We also investigate the pulse phase dependence of the cyclotron line parameters and find that the line is significantly detected in all the phases of both Astro-Ph observations, along with showing variation with the pulse phase. This differs from the previous results reported using BeppoSAX and NuSTAR. We explain this behaviour of the cyclotron line to be due to photon spawning and different accretion column radii at the two poles of this neutron star.

A comparison of Galactic electron density models using PyGEDM

D. C. Price, A. Deller, C. Flynn

Abstract Galactic electron density distribution models are crucial tools for estimating the impact of the ionised interstellar medium on the impulsive signals from radio pulsars and fast radio bursts. The two prevailing Galactic electron density models (GEDMs) are YMW16 (Yao et al. 2017, ApJ, 835, 29) and NE2001 (Cordes & Lazio 2002, arXiv e-prints, pp astro–ph/0207156). Here, we introduce a software package PyGEDM which provides a unified application programming interface for these models and the YT20 (Yamasaki & Totani 2020, ApJ, 888, 105) model of the Galactic halo. We use PyGEDM to compute all-sky maps of Galactic dispersion measure (DM) for YMW16 and NE2001 and compare the large-scale differences between the two. In general, YMW16 predicts higher DM values towards the Galactic anticentre. YMW16 predicts higher DMs at low Galactic latitudes, but NE2001 predicts higher DMs in most other directions. We identify lines of sight for which the models are most discrepant, using pulsars with independent distance measurements. YMW16 performs better on average than NE2001, but both models show significant outliers. We suggest that future campaigns to determine pulsar distances should focus on targets where the models show large discrepancies, so future models can use those measurements to better estimate distances along those line of sight. We also suggest that the Galactic halo should be considered as a component in future GEDMs, to avoid overestimating the Galactic DM contribution for extragalactic sources such as FRBs.

A New Catalog of Globular Clusters in the Milky Way

W. Harris

A new revision of the McMaster catalog of Milky Way globular clusters is available. This is the first update since 2003 and the biggest single revision since the original version of the catalog published in 1996. The list now contains a total of 157 objects classified as globular clusters. Major upgrades have been made especially to the cluster coordinates, metallicities, and structural profile parameters, and the list of parameters now also includes central velocity dispersion. NB: This paper is a stand-alone publication available only on the astro-ph archive; it will not be published separately in a journal.

Deep Extragalactic Surveys around the Ecliptic Poles with AKARI (ASTRO-F)

H. Matsuhara, T. Wada, S. Matsuura et al.

AKARI (formerly ASTRO-F) is an infrared space telescope designed for an all-sky survey at 10-180 µm, and deep pointed surveys of selected areas at 2-180 µm. The deep pointed surveys with AKARI will significantly advance our understanding of galaxy evolution, the structure formation of the Universe, the nature of the buried AGNs, and the cosmic infrared background. Here we describe the important characteristics of the AKARI mission: the orbit, and the attitude control system, and investigate the optimum survey area based on the updated pre-flight sensitivities of
