An Education

Bhavna Mehta

Abstract:An essay on the migration from one area of America to another after a marriage. The narrator, an immigrant from India, explores the conversations had with family over her decision to leave California for a small town in Mexico. A discursive look at how assumptions are created when discussing particular areas of the United States, people with disabilities, and what is deemed as “success”. The narrator of the story is a paraplegic, as well as her newly married husband. The story examines the questions and common discussions of birth and pregnancy in the life of a disabled woman.

‘When Mom left for Mars’: Life narratives of first-generation Moroccan migrant mothers in Flanders

Amal Miri, Irma Emmery

Current discourses in Belgian politics about Moroccan Muslim women are deeply rooted in the first-generation family reunification policies of the 1960s. Today, (marriage) migrant women are still commonly described as victims of their ‘backward’ religious traditions and in need of protection for the sake of themselves, their children and society. Looking at the implications of these views for the women concerned, this article discusses the unique docufilm ‘When Mom Left for Mars’, which documents the life narrative of a first-generation Moroccan woman in The Netherlands. Based on this docufilm, we aim to (1) document how Belgian and Dutch first-generation migrant women can be compared with each other using Karl Mannheim’s ‘theory of generations’ and (2) engage in an intergenerational conversation with first-generation mothers and their daughters, as well as with mid-generation mothers, to gain more insight into their similarities, heritage and differences. More specifically, we explore the agency of these mothers using the analytical lens of ‘affective citizenship’, particularly attending to how they centralise mothering and care work to negotiate gender and belonging, and counter the challenges of marriage migration, motherhood and integration. The docufilm is, thus, used as a case study from which we consider the first-generation women as ‘cultural archives’, and as a methodological tool in facilitating in-depth interviews and group discussions.

The Distinctiveness of Jeju‘s Mego Halmang Folktale and Bonpuri Tradition as Seen through The Wife Who Killed Her Husband Folktale -Focusing on the Gaze toward Women‘s “Anger” and “Pain”-

In The Wife Who Killed Her Husband folktale, the woman kills her current husband, who had previously murdered her first husband, as well as her children from her current marriage. In response to her actions, a memorial gate or pavilion is erected in her honor. In some variations of this tale, a son born from the current marriage kills his mother under the pretext of avenging his father’s death. Traditionally, this folktale has been interpreted through the concepts of “loyalty” and “revenge.” However, at the core of the narrative lies the misguided desire of a man to form a family by taking another man’s wife, alongside the anger of a woman whose life was ruined as a result. Recognizing and addressing the violence, victimization, and discrimination faced by women is a crucial part of forming a feminist subjectivity. When viewed through this lens, the son’s act of killing his mother can be interpreted as both a parody of and a backlash against the woman’s murder of her current husband. In contrast to The Wife Who Killed Her Husband folktale, where the woman’s report to the authorities leads to the erection of a memorial gate, the report made by Mego Halmang in the Jeju folktale leads to the punishment of her current husband and her own exoneration. The Jeju saying, “Even if you have ten (or nine) children, it’s all in vain,” which is often passed down along with the Mego Halmang folktale, reflects Mego Halmang’s feelings of shock and emptiness upon discovering that the husband with whom she has shared a long life and borne ten (or nine) children was, in fact, the murderer of her previous husband. In the folktale, after Mego Halmang kills her husband and children and dies in Bishini cave, the villagers who originally lived there leave and settle in Iseung cave, leaving Mego Halmang alone in the desolate Bishini cave. In the bonpuri, Mego Halmang, upon learning from the authorities that she is free to go wherever she wishes, descends to Iseung cave where the villagers live. People who experience suffering often feel an even greater need for someone to understand and acknowledge their pain. By continually revealing herself to the villagers living in Iseung cave and to the worshippers who visit Songssi Halmangdang, Mego Halmang gains recognition for her suffering. The gaze on women’s anger and pain is the special characteristic of the Jeju Mego Halmang folktale and its bonpuri within the overall landscape of the The Wife Who Killed Her Husband folktale.

CONSTRUCTING MEANING TO ENHANCE MENTAL WELLNESS FOR CHRISTIAN WIDOWS IN KENYA

Nazarene Kiwinga

Death the unwelcome visitor, leaves in its wake a brew of emotions and milestones to be negotiated. Individuals experience death and its aftermath differently. Widows are vulnerable adults who suffer unfair treatment in many African cultures. As soon as she becomes a widow, a woman’s status changes. She loses certain rights and privileges in communities where marriage is viewed as a key to a social class. Widows are expected to partake in rituals and practices that widowers do not. Some of these practices are dehumanizing and psychologically distressing. The rituals and practices are compulsory. Not engaging in them would lead to being ostracized. Remarriage on the other hand is stigmatized, unless it is done within the family as an African woman is married to the clan. The widow, being part of the community understands the meaning of the rituals and practices. She understands what will befall her and her children if she does not accomplish these expectations. Widows live in a community that cannot support them due to the changes that have been caused by contemporary living. Faced with such challenges she a widow has difficult decisions to make. The cultural setup offers little support, she must take responsibility of her mental health. Widows can find solace in the church, among the community of believers. Here one can construct different meanings of death, bereavement, and widowhood using the scripture as a guide rather than the dehumanizing cultural practices related to death and bereavement. The new meaning acts as a gateway to freedom, even as she continues living as a member of the cultural community.

Marriage Matching-based Instant Parking Spot Sharing in Internet of Vehicles

Zhonghai Zhao, Yang Xu, Jia Liu et al.

The rapid development and integration of automotive manufacturing, sensor, and communication technologies have facilitated the emergence of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). However, the explosive growing demand for parking spots has become a challenging issue to be addressed in IoV. In this paper, we propose a novel Smart Parking System (SPS) for IoV by applying the matching game approach. Specifically, the proposed SPS consists of three types of entities: drivers, parking spot owners (PSOs), and a certificate authority (CA). Drivers and PSOs send parking requests and parking spot information to the CA, respectively. The CA is responsible for identifying legitimate system users, matching drivers with PSOs, and recording their transaction information. We first design rational utility functions for drivers and PSOs, and then establish preference lists for them based on real-time conditions. With these information, we further develop an improved marriage matching (MM) algorithm to achieve stable matching results for drivers' requests and parking spot allocation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MM-based SPS not only ensures stable matching results with the objective of distance minimization but also achieves an overall utility close to that of the optimal algorithm.

Beyond FRiM, ASAP: a family of sparse approximation for covariance matrices and preconditioners

Éric Thiébaut, Michel Tallon, Samuel Thé et al.

The FRiM fractal operator belongs to a family of operators, called ASAP, defined by an ordered selection of nearest neighbors. This generalization provides means to improve upon the good properties of FRiM. We propose a fast algorithm to build an ASAP operator mimicking the fractal structure of FRiM for pupils of any size and geometry and to learn the sparse coefficients from empirical data. We empirically show the good approximation by ASAP of correlated statistics and the benefits of ASAP for solving phase restoration problems.

Asymptotically stable matchings and evolutionary dynamics of preference revelation games in marriage problems

Hidemasa Ishii, Nariaki Nishino

The literature on centralized matching markets often assumes that a true preference of each player is known to herself and fixed, but empirical evidence casts doubt on its plausibility. To circumvent the problem, we consider evolutionary dynamics of preference revelation games in marriage problems. We formulate the asymptotic stability of a matching, indicating the dynamical robustness against sufficiently small changes in players' preference reporting strategies, and show that asymptotically stable matchings are stable when they exist. The simulation results of replicator dynamics are presented to demonstrate the asymptotic stability. We contribute a practical insight for market designers that a stable matching may be realized by introducing a learning period in which participants find appropriate reporting strategies through trial and error. We also open doors to a novel area of research by demonstrating ways to employ evolutionary game theory in studies on centralized markets.

Editing a Woman's Voice

Anna Costello, Ekaterina Fedorova, Zhijing Jin et al.

Prior work shows that men and women speak with different levels of confidence, though it's often assumed that these differences are innate or are learned in early childhood. Using academic publishing as a setting, we find that language differences across male and female authors are initially negligible: in first drafts of academic manuscripts, men and women write with similar levels of uncertainty. However, when we trace those early drafts to their published versions, a substantial gender gap in linguistic uncertainty arises. That is, women increase their use of cautionary language through the publication process more than men. We show this increase in the linguistic gender gap varies substantially based on editor assignment. Specifically, our author-to-editor matched dataset allows us to estimate editor-specific fixed effects, capturing how specific editors impact the change in linguistic uncertainty for female authors relative to male authors (the editor's author-gender gap). Editors' author-gender gaps vary widely, and correlate with observable editor characteristics such as societal norms in their country-of-origin, their work history, and the year that they obtained their PhD. Overall, our study suggests that a woman's "voice" is partially shaped by external forces, and it highlights the critical role of editors in shaping how female academics communicate.

Reducing Women to Bare Life: Sexual Violence in South Africa

Amanda Gouws

This article investigates rape through the lens of biopolitics, using Agamben’s notion of a state of exception and bare life. I will argue that there needs to be a closer look at the neglected sexual and gender dimensions of biopolitics in settler colonial societies, and specifically at the continuities of sexual violence of the settler colony with high levels sexual violence in present day South Africa. Women in post-colonial South Africa are included in a state of exception giving rise to bare life through the abandonment by the law and state agencies that have to implement the law. I end by considering the possibilities of resistance against bare life.

BEATING BROKE BY GETTING OUT? EXAMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERSONAL DEBT AND COMMUNITY-OUTMIGRATION

Alyssa Gerhardt, Karen Foster

Scholarship on young people’s geographical mobilities tells us that young adults move away from their childhood communities for a complex mix of economic “push-pull” reasons, including relationships, aspirations, attachments to place, identity, and belonging. In this abundant research, particularly that which focuses on youth outmigration from rural and peripheral communities, there is surprisingly little attention paid to an issue that is top-of-mind for many young adults today: personal debt. In this paper, we draw insights from extant literature on youth mobilities to make the case for a greater examination of the role of personal debt in young people’s migration decisions. We hypothesize that youth and debt increase a person’s likelihood of moving away from peripheral regions. We test this hypothesis using data from a 2019 survey of Atlantic Canadians and find some support for it, and some interesting nuance, suggesting that there is good reason to examine debt’s role in youth mobilities in greater detail.

Mujeres compositoras: un enfoque pedagógico sobre cómo presentar al alumnado de secundaria referentes femeninos. El caso de Ethel Smyth

Sandra Soler Campo, Magdalena Alegret Pampols

An investigation on the nonclassical and quantum phase properties of a family of engineered quantum states

Priya Malpani

The main focus of this thesis is to study the nonclassical and phase properties of a family of engineered quantum states, most of which show various nonclassical features. The beauty of these states is that these states can be used to establish quantum supremacy. Earlier, a considerable amount of works has been reported on various types of quantum states and their nonclassical properties. Here, complementing the earlier works, the effect of non-Gaussianity inducing operators on the nonclassical and phase properties of displaced Fock states have been studied. This thesis includes 6 chapters. In Chapter 1, motivation behind performing the present work is stated explicitly, also the basic concepts of quantum optics are discussed with a specific attention on the witnesses and measures of nonclassicality. In Chapter 2, nonclassical properties of photon added and subtracted displaced Fock states have been studied using various witnesses of lower- and higher-order nonclassicality which are introduced in Chapter 1. In Chapter 3, we have continued our investigation on photon added and subtracted displaced Fock states (and their limiting cases). In this chapter, quantum phase properties of these states are investigated from a number of perspectives, and it is shown that the quantum phase properties are dependent on the quantum state engineering operations performed. In Chapter 4, we have continued our investigation on the impact of non-Gaussianity inducing operators on the nonclassical and phase properties of the displaced Fock states. In Chapter 5, we have performed a comparison between to process that are used in quantum state engineering to induce nonclassical features. Finally, this thesis is concluded in Chapter 6, where we have summarized the findings of this thesis and have also described scope of the future works.

Vicissitudes of Internationalization: Academic articles in Brazilian journals

Mara Coelho de Souza Lago

In 2017, Revista Estudos Feministas completed 25 years of publication. Its 10, 15 and 20 years as an academic journal created and edited by women’s groups linked to teaching, research and feminist activism have yielded many texts in commemorative editions. REF, the result of a voluntary collective work, “is an indexed, interdisciplinary journal of national and international circulation, the mission of which is to publish articles, essays and reviews that present consistent and innovative theoretical reflections (...) broadening the frontiers of academic debates in the field of feminist and gender studies and implementing the practices of women’s movements”. The 25th anniversary of REF provides us with a new opportunity to reflect on its editing processes, on the themes of the articles, essays, dossiers and debates produced, as well as on the geographical places and disciplinary formations of their authors, with their diversified epistemological affiliations, now supported by a database that has been organized on the magazine.

Downsizing of Star Formation Measured from the Clustered Infrared Background Correlated with Quasars

Kirsten R. Hall, Devin Crichton, Tobias Marriage et al.

Powerful quasars can be seen out to large distances. As they reside in massive dark matter haloes, they provide a useful tracer of large scale structure. We stack Herschel-SPIRE images at 250, 350 and 500 microns at the location of 11,235 quasars in ten redshift bins spanning $0.5 \leq z \leq 3.5$. The unresolved dust emission of the quasar and its host galaxy dominate on instrumental beam scales, while extended emission is spatially resolved on physical scales of order a megaparsec. This emission is due to dusty star-forming galaxies clustered around the dark matter haloes hosting quasars. We measure radial surface brightness profiles of the stacked images to compute the angular correlation function of dusty star-forming galaxies correlated with quasars. We then model the profiles to determine large scale clustering properties of quasars and dusty star-forming galaxies as a function of redshift. We adopt a halo model and parameterize it by the most effective halo mass at hosting star-forming galaxies, finding $\log(M_\mathrm{eff}/M_{\odot}) = 13.8^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ at $z=2.21-2.32$, and, at $z=0.5-0.81$, the mass is $\log(M_\mathrm{eff}/M_{\odot}) = 10.7^{+1.0}_{-0.2}$. Our results indicate a downsizing of dark matter haloes hosting dusty star-forming galaxies between $0.5 \leq z \leq 2.9$. The derived dark matter halo masses are consistent with other measurements of star-forming and sub-millimeter galaxies. The physical properties of dusty star-forming galaxies inferred from the halo model depend on details of the quasar halo occupation distribution in ways that we explore at $z>2.5$, where the quasar HOD parameters are not well constrained.
