Management education in the age of information overload

Kenneth Michael Sweet, Kathryn Appenzeller Knowles, Ethan P. Waples

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to advocate for the integration of quantitative reasoning into management education and leadership development literature. The authors argue that the increasing complexity of managerial decision contexts, particularly in the age of information overload, demands that leaders possess the ability to critically analyze and interpret quantitative information. Design/methodology/approach – This viewpoint paper uses narrative argument to explore the concept of quantitative reasoning and its relevance to management education. The authors draw on research from mathematics education, psychology and management to support their argument. They also use real-world examples, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, to illustrate the importance of quantitative reasoning in contemporary leadership. Findings – This paper argues that quantitative reasoning is a critical skill for organizational leaders. It highlights the limitations of traditional management education in preparing leaders to effectively navigate data-rich environments. The authors contend that incorporating quantitative reasoning into leadership development programs can improve decision-making effectiveness. Originality/value – This paper offers a novel perspective on leadership development by emphasizing the significance of quantitative reasoning, a concept borrowed from the field of mathematics education, to close a gap in current management education practices.

Application of person–organization fit to military veterans

Meliza Figueroa-Torres, Josh Jordan, Michael J. Kirchner

Purpose – Human resource management professionals strive to establish a high person–organization (PO) fit when hiring, as doing so ultimately reduces turnover and increases employee performance outcomes. However, tailored strategies toward improving the PO fit of military veterans have yet to be explored – a particularly concerning oversight considering the prevalence of veteran hiring initiatives and correspondingly high turnover rates of former servicemembers in their first nonmilitary jobs. This paper aims to explore the PO fit model’s application toward military veterans in nonmilitary organizations. Design/methodology/approach – A review of veteran transition literature was conducted to identify aspects of military veteran career transition issues, which suggested a perceived gap in fit between their job or organization. Findings – The review revealed prevailing transition challenges which likely arose, at least in part, due to veterans’ lack of fit in nonmilitary organizations. The findings informed development of a veteran–organization fit model based on a needs-supplies conceptualization of PO fit. Research limitations/implications – The authors apply the needs-supplies perspective of PO fit to address identified veteran career transition challenges. Importantly, the authors offer organization management scholars concrete steps for assessing the impact of integrating the proposed framework within civilian organizations. Practical implications – This study sheds light on how PO fit practices can be tailored and integrated by HR professionals for their military veteran newcomers. The authors offer HR practitioners POF strategies for military veteran newcomers in nonmilitary organizations. Originality/value – This paper offers organization management and HR scholars and practitioners a needs-supply informed approach toward improving PO fit of military veteran newcomers.

Problematic aspects of staffing the domestic pharmacy segment in the context of pharmaceutical safety

N. O. Tkachenko , O. B. Pankevych, B. P. Hromovyk

The aim of the work is to identify problematic issues of human resource potential in the domestic pharmacy segment from the point of view of pharmaceutical safety. Materials and methods. The work used information search, critical and comparative analysis, online surveys, generalization and interpretation of results. The research materials were scientific publications on the researched issue, the results of an online survey of pharmacy employees during September – December 2024 using the Google Forms platform. Results. A list of problematic issues of personnel management in the pharmacy segment of the pharmaceutical sector of the healthcare industry was identified: pharmacies employ persons who do not have the right to participate in the provision of pharmaceutical care, since they do not have a pharmaceutical education; neglect by pharmacy management of the norms of law when applying for a job, choosing a position and documenting employment; high staff turnover; formation of work shifts in violation of labor legislation recommendations; an increase in the number of unprofessional obligations based on violation of ethical norms of the profession. It was found that the personnel policy of pharmacies for the majority of pharmaceutical specialists is not understandable, opaque, formal and not implemented. This causes rapid professional burnout, deterioration of the psychological state and pushes pharmaceutical specialists to change their field of activity, and also affects the quality of pharmaceutical care provided to the population in pharmacies. It was established that the top management of the health care and education and science systems, against the background of partial attempts to solve problems with the critical situation in pharmaceutical education, today lacks strategic plans regarding the staffing of the pharmaceutical sector of the health care industry. The issue of developing and implementing the Concept of Pharmaceutical Safety in Ukraine is actualized. Conclusions. Based on the data set of an online survey of pharmacy employees, an analytical study of problematic issues of personnel potential in the domestic pharmacy segment was carried out and, based on its results, the prospects for the creation and implementation of the Concept of Pharmaceutical Safety in Ukraine were considered.

Introducing the PIT-plot -- a new tool in the portfolio manager's toolkit

Stig-Johan Wiklund, Magnus Ytterstad

Project portfolio management is an essential process for organizations aiming to optimize the value of their R&D investments. In this article, we introduce a new tool designed to support the prioritization of projects within project portfolio management. We label this tool the PIT-plot, an acronym for Project Impact Tornado plot, with reference to the similarity to the Tornado plot often used for sensitivity analyses. Many traditional practices in portfolio management focus on the properties of the projects available to the portfolio. We are with the PIT-plot changing the perspective and focus not on the properties of the projects themselves, but on the impact that the projects may have on the portfolio. This enables the strategic portfolio management to identify and focus on the projects of largest impact to the portfolio, either for the purpose of risk mitigation or for the purpose of value-adding efforts.

Culture as “Object” and “Tool” of Global Governance: Social and Metaphysical Consequences and Threats

Yaroslav Martynyshyn, Olena Khlystun

Introduction. The relevance of the research topic is due to the problems caused by the globalisation of society. Purpose and methods. The purpose of the article is a philosophical analysis of comprehensive changes in society under the influence of globalisation and determinants identification that influence the transformation of culture as a factor of modern society's existence into an “object” and “tool” of global governance. The methodological basis of the study is the dialectical principle of cognition, systemic, axiological, historical, typological, comparative and synergistic approaches. Results. The role and significance of culture in society as a means of formation, education, development, and humanisation are highlighted. The author analyses the socio-cultural reflections and contradictions of globalisation, which lead to the deformation of ethno-cultural identifications, which becomes an obstacle to the achievement of a true civilisational synthesis by humanity. The article reveals the essence of global governance and its subjectivity and identifies the reasons why culture is deliberately turned into an “object” and “tool” of this governance. The negative social consequences and metaphysical threats of turning culture into an “object” and “tool” of global governance, as well as possible means of counteracting this are identified. Conclusions. The scientific novelty of the research results lies in the disclosure of the socio-cultural essence of global governance and the identification of its negative consequences and threats to society, and the significance lies in the fact that they can be used in the practical activities of public authorities, as well as in the development of the theoretical and methodological foundations of the philosophy of socio-cultural management and global studies.

Portfolio Management using Deep Reinforcement Learning

Ashish Anil Pawar, Vishnureddy Prashant Muskawar, Ritesh Tiku

Algorithmic trading or Financial robots have been conquering the stock markets with their ability to fathom complex statistical trading strategies. But with the recent development of deep learning technologies, these strategies are becoming impotent. The DQN and A2C models have previously outperformed eminent humans in game-playing and robotics. In our work, we propose a reinforced portfolio manager offering assistance in the allocation of weights to assets. The environment proffers the manager the freedom to go long and even short on the assets. The weight allocation advisements are restricted to the choice of portfolio assets and tested empirically to knock benchmark indices. The manager performs financial transactions in a postulated liquid market without any transaction charges. This work provides the conclusion that the proposed portfolio manager with actions centered on weight allocations can surpass the risk-adjusted returns of conventional portfolio managers.

Interviews from Scratch: Individual Differences in Writing Interview Questions

Lauren Wegmeyer, Andrew Tenbrink, Angie Delacruz et al.

Against best practice recommendations, interviewers prefer unstructured interviews where they are not beholden to regimentation. In cases where interviews are less structured, the interviewer typically generates his or her own set of interview questions. Even in structured interviews though, the initial interview content must be generated by someone. Thus, it is important to understand the different factors that influence what types of questions individuals generate in interview contexts. The current research aims to understand the types of interview questions individuals generate, factors that affect the quality of those questions, how skill in generating interview questions relates to skill in evaluating existing interview questions, and how individual traits relate to skill in generating interview questions. Results show that respondents who are skilled in evaluating existing interview questions are also skilled in writing interview questions from scratch, and these skills relate to general mental ability and social intelligence. Respondents generated questions that most commonly assessed applicant history and self-perceived applicant characteristics, whereas only 30% of questions generated were situational or behavioral.

Network-wide assessment of ATM mechanisms using an agent-based model

Luis Delgado, Gérald Gurtner, Piero Mazzarisi et al.

This paper presents results from the SESAR ER3 Domino project. Three mechanisms are assessed at the ECAC-wide level: 4D trajectory adjustments (a combination of actively waiting for connecting passengers and dynamic cost indexing), flight prioritisation (enabling ATFM slot swapping at arrival regulations), and flight arrival coordination (where flights are sequenced in extended arrival managers based on an advanced cost-driven optimisation). Classical and new metrics, designed to capture network effects, are used to analyse the results of a micro-level agent-based model. A scenario with congestion at three hubs is used to assess the 4D trajectory adjustment and the flight prioritisation mechanisms. Two different scopes for the extended arrival manager are modelled to analyse the impact of the flight arrival coordination mechanism. Results show that the 4D trajectory adjustments mechanism succeeds in reducing costs and delays for connecting passengers. A trade-off between the interests of the airlines in reducing costs and those of non-connecting passengers emerges, although passengers benefit overall from the mechanism. Flight prioritisation is found to have no significant effects at the network level, as it is applied to a small number of flights. Advanced flight arrival coordination, as implemented, increases delays and costs in the system. The arrival manager optimises the arrival sequence of all flights within its scope but does not consider flight uncertainties, thus leading to sub-optimal actions.

Optimization of waste collection through the sequencing of micro-routes and transfer station convenience analysis: an Argentinian case study

SofÍa Molfese, Diego Rossit, Mariano Frutos et al.

Municipal solid waste management is a paramount activity in modern cities due to the environmental, social and economic problems that can arise when mishandled. In this work, the sequencing of micro-routes in the Argentine city of Bahía Blanca is addressed, which is modeled as a vehicle routing problem with travel time limit and the vehicle's capacity. Particularly, we propose two mathematical formulations based on mixed-integer programming and we solve a set of instances of the city of Bahía Blanca based on real data. Moreover, with this model we estimate the total distance and travel time of the waste collection and use this data to analyze the possibility of installing a transfer station. The results demonstrate the competitiveness of the approach to resolve realistic instances of the target problem and suggest the convenience of installing a transfer station in the city considering the reduction of the traveled distance.

Embedding Sustainability in Complex Projects: A Pedagogic Practice Simulation Approach

Caroline N J Tite, David Pontin, Nicholas Dacre

Sustainability is focussed on avoiding the long-term depletion of natural resources. Under the terms of a government plan to tackle climate change, a driver for improved sustainability is the cut of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK to almost zero by 2050. With this type of change, new themes are continuously being developed which drive complex projects, such as the development of new power generation methods, which encompass challenging lead times and demanding requirements. Consideration of the implementation of strategies and key concepts, which may engender sustainability within complex projects therefore presents an opportunity for further critical debate, review, and application through a project management lens. Sustainability incorporation in project management has been documented in academic literature, with this emerging field providing new challenges. For example, project management education can provide a holistic base for the inculcation of sustainability factors to a range of industries, including complex projects. Likewise, practitioner interest and approaches to sustainability in project management are being driven by the recently Chartered Association for Project Management (APM). Whilst this body makes a significant contribution to the UK economy across many sectors, it also addresses ongoing sustainability challenges. Therefore, by drawing on research and practitioner developments, the authors argue that by connecting with the next generation through practice simulation approaches, and embedding sustainability issues within project management tools and methods, improved focus on sustainability in complex project management may be achieved.

Managing Innovation in Technical Education: Revisiting the Developmental Strategies of Politeknik Brunei

Bashir Ahmed Bhuiyan, Mohammad Shahansha Molla, Masud Alam

The present study aims at exploring the strategies for managing innovation in technical education by using blended learning philosophy and practices with special reference to Politeknik Brunei. Based on literature review and desk research, the study found out salient characteristics, explored constraining factors, elicited strategies of Politeknik Brunei, and suggested some options and a framework for innovations management and development of effective blended teaching and learning. The limiting factors identified are the unwillingness of the top-level management, lack of structural support, dearth of readiness of the stakeholders, the gap between teacher's expectations and changed students characteristics, and blended teaching myopia on the way of effective application of blended learning strategies. Notable suggestions for strategic development are developing wide-angle vision and self-renewal processes, analyzing the environment for needs determination. Clarity of purpose and tasks, technological adaptability, data-driven decision making, prompt feedback, flipped classroom, and development of learning clusters are other dimensions that may go a long way toward innovating teaching-learning and the overall development of an academic institution. Finally, the study suggested important guidelines for applying the strategies and proposed framework for quality blended learning and managing innovations in technical education.

Case Studies on using Natural Language Processing Techniques in Customer Relationship Management Software

Şükrü Ozan

How can a text corpus stored in a customer relationship management (CRM) database be used for data mining and segmentation? In order to answer this question we inherited the state of the art methods commonly used in natural language processing (NLP) literature, such as word embeddings, and deep learning literature, such as recurrent neural networks (RNN). We used the text notes from a CRM system which are taken by customer representatives of an internet ads consultancy agency between years 2009 and 2020. We trained word embeddings by using the corresponding text corpus and showed that these word embeddings can not only be used directly for data mining but also be used in RNN architectures, which are deep learning frameworks built with long short term memory (LSTM) units, for more comprehensive segmentation objectives. The results prove that structured text data in a CRM can be used to mine out very valuable information and any CRM can be equipped with useful NLP features once the problem definitions are properly built and the solution methods are conveniently implemented.

Optimal Scheduling of Integrated Demand Response-Enabled Integrated Energy Systems with Uncertain Renewable Generations: A Stackelberg Game Approach

Yang Li, Chunling Wang, Guoqing Li et al.

In order to balance the interests of integrated energy operator (IEO) and users, a novel Stackelberg game-based optimization framework is proposed for the optimal scheduling of integrated demand response (IDR)-enabled integrated energy systems with uncertain renewable generations, where the IEO acts as the leader who pursues the maximization of his profits by setting energy prices, while the users are the follower who adjusts energy consumption plans to minimize their energy costs. Taking into account the inherent uncertainty of renewable generations, the probabilistic spinning reserve is written in the form of a chance constraint; in addition, a district heating network model is built considering the characteristics of time delay and thermal attenuation by fully exploiting its potential, and the flexible thermal comfort requirements of users in IDR are considered by introducing a predicted mean vote (PMV) index. To solve the raised model, sequence operation theory is introduced to convert the chance constraint into its deterministic equivalent form, and thereby, the leader-follower Stackelberg game is tackled into a mixed-integer quadratic programming formulation through Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions and is finally solved by the CPLEX optimizer. The results of two case studies demonstrate that the proposed Stackelberg game-based approach manages to achieve the Stackelberg equilibrium between IEO and users by the coordination of renewable generations and IDR. Furthermore, the study on a real integrated energy system in China verifies the applicability of the proposed approach for real-world applications.

Attributes of Internal Audit and Prevention, Detection and Assessment of Fraud in Pakistan

Naveed Khan, Abdul Rafay, Amer Shakeel

With it being considered as a value-added activity, the Internal Audit function (IAF) of a firm is one of the most important functions in an organization. During the last decade, the role of this particular function has become very useful, especially in creating awareness regarding the Prevention, Detection and Assessment (PD&A) of fraudulent activities. In many countries, carrying out an Internal Audit is a legal compulsion for public companies, in order to establish an effective, and efficient IAF. This study aims to explore the relationship between the various attributes of IAF (effectiveness, independence, staff training, qualification and experience), and the PD&A of fraudulent activities in Pakistan. For this purpose, the convenient sampling technique, for data collection, is used and the questionnaires are collected from the respondents belonging to Pakistan. The questionnaire has been prepared in the form of a Likert scale. Respondents for this study include (1) staff members working in the Internal Audit (IA), finance and accounting departments of the companies listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), and (2) staff members of firms that are engaged in external statutory audit in Pakistan. Descriptive statistics show the details regarding the demographic questions, IAF and PD&A of the fraudulent activities that take place in the companies. Moreover, in order to get to the effective and relevant results, the regression analysis is performed in order to find out if there exists any relationship between these variables. The results show that all five independent variables positively affect the PD&A of fraudulent activities. However, three of the independent variables (IAE, IAT, and IAQ) are statistically significant, whereas two of the variables taken into account (IAI, and IAE) are statistically insignificant. It is recommended that the IAF should be more independent, and effective so as to attain the required results. Moreover, firms should also focus on the qualifications and proper training of the staff that are responsible for executing the IAF.
