Knowledge of obstetrical fistula and its associated factors among reproductive-age women in Ejere Woreda, West Shewa Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia: a community-based study

Getahun Tiruye, Getahun Tiruye, Daba Kejela et al.

IntroductionObstetric fistula is a serious and tragic childbirth injury that mainly affects women in resource-limited areas, often leading to social isolation and stigma. While optimal knowledge among women about the prevention, contributing factors, and available treatments for obstetric fistula is crucial for reducing its overall burden, many women in Ethiopia continue to be affected by it and endure its consequences because of a persistent knowledge gap. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of knowledge about obstetric fistula and its associated factors among women of reproductive age in Ejere Woreda, West Shewa Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among reproductive-age women in Ejere Woreda, West Shewa Zone, Ethiopia, from 1 to 30 June 2024. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to recruit 770 participants. Data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire, which was then coded and analyzed using SPSS version 27. Variables with a p-value <0.25 in bivariate logistic regression were included in a multivariable logistic regression to identify significant predictors of women's knowledge about obstetric fistula. A p-value <0.05 at a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to determine statistically significant associations.ResultsThe study found that 46.6% (95% CI: 43.1–50.3) of women had good knowledge about obstetric fistula. Factors significantly associated with the knowledge level of obstetric fistula included being an urban resident [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 4.12, 95% CI: 2.36–7.19], access to a TV/radio at home (AOR = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.19–5.25), proximity to health facilities (AOR = 4.88, 95% CI: 2.37–10.04), giving birth at health institutions (AOR = 4.62, 95% CI: 2.56–8.33), attending pregnant women's conferences (AOR = 3.42, 95% CI: 1.88–6.22), and having a history of modern contraceptive use (AOR = 4.82, 95% CI: 2.77–8.37).Conclusion and recommendationsNearly one in two women of childbearing age are knowledgeable about obstetric fistula. The study underscores the need to address the urban–rural disparity in healthcare access and information, enhancing media access, and promoting women's participation in pregnancy conferences to enhance knowledge of obstetric fistula.

Conjugal Conflict and Marital Discord in Indian English Novels

Dr. Pooja Shukla

Marriage has, since ancient times, been revered in India as a sacred bond between a man and a woman. A house becomes a home only when it is coloured with emotional bonding, mutual understanding, and shared responsibilities. The conjugal relationship, therefore, plays a pivotal role in shaping the growth and stability of a family. Yet, happiness in such relationships often emerges through pain and sacrifice. Fathers undergo hardship for their children’s future, and mothers embrace innumerable struggles to sustain their families. However, tension frequently arises when these two roles intersect as husband and wife. Differences in temperament, background, and values often cause friction. Conjugal conflict, then, is not merely a private issue but a cultural phenomenon, often rooted in patriarchal traditions and societal expectations. Indian English novels explore this complex terrain with depth and sensitivity, depicting both the agony and resilience embedded within marriage. Writers such as Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, Nayantara Sahgal, R. K. Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand, and Raja Rao reveal how conjugal discord reflects wider struggles of individuality, identity, and gender roles. This paper examines their portrayals to decode the multifaceted realities of conjugal clash in Indian fiction.

A Consideration on Partner Compatibility with Emphasis on Spousal Relationships

Mantae Kim

As for major life events such as marriage, in which a man and a woman come together and build a family, there has been, regardless of time, a strong tendency to predict whether it will be auspicious or inauspicious. The original meaning of partner compatibility, which is known as Gung-Hap, is to examine the Four Pillars of Destiny for each member of a couple before marriage, and figure out how the relationship would work in the future. However, in modern society, Gung-Hap has expanded its scope to various relationships, such as between parents and children, siblings, friends, colleagues, business partners, employers and employees, and beyond. It is no longer strange to check partner compatibility with friends and lovers, and even more, people are more likely to assess partner compatibility in social relationships to understand if these relationships could be beneficial or not. When it comes to partner compatibility in spousal relationships, there has been a common ground that the Four Pillars of Destiny including birth year, month, day, and hour of each member of the couple have to be cross- examined, but the approaches are slightly different. Though, all approaches share the same goal, of balance (中和) as the ultimate value. For determining and judging the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of spousal compatibility, both Gung((宮) and Sung(星) of the spouse are considered important, but since the spouse’s Ilji(日支) could be deemed as the dwelling place of the spouse, Gung((宮) of the spouse takes precedence over Sung(星).

The portrayal of daughters-in-law and the patterns of married life in

Sun-hee Jeung

In this article, the portrayal of daughters-in-law and the patterns of marriage life are examined through the serialized classic Korean novel . It discusses the emotions felt by these women during marriage, as well as their feelings towards family members other than their mothers-in-law, thereby reflecting on the aspects of married life depicted in poetry by a woman after marriage and her response to it. The focus is primarily on the wives of SoHyunSung and UnSung : Madame Hwa, Madame Seok, Madame Yeo, and madame Hyeong, as well as Princess Myeonghyeon. Although the marriage lives of women in the late Joseon Dynasty are also depicted in literary works such as folk songs and poetry, these tend to focus on emotions or are relatively short. However, in classic Korean novels, the portrayal of daughters-in-law is subtly detailed, focusing on their psychology and responses. Madame Hwa is portrayed as a daughter-in-law who rebels slightly against her elders but quickly becomes obedient after admonition. Madame Seok is depicted as a daughter-in-law who calmly and perfectly responds by understanding the hearts of her husband and elders in advance. Madame Hyeong, being wise and patient, endures hardships caused by her husband's favoritism without losing her composure, showing a dignified attitude. Madame Yeo and Princess Myeonghyeon, though not experiencing married life, become troubled or are driven away or killed due to their negative attitudes towards married life. The daughters-in-law in exhibit obedient and calm responses to married life. While they are capable of speaking frankly or expressing their opinions confidently compared to other classic Korean novels, they maintain a docile attitude towards their parents-in-law. This may be considered desirable behavior in the upper-class families that were the audience for contemporary novels.

Legal Aspects of the Rights of Children from Siri Marriages

Yoga Prasetia, Muhamad Hasan Sebyar

Marriage is a sacred agreement to form a family between a man and a woman, even if it is carried out in a siri or registered marriage. However, there are still many ordinary people who do not understand the risks of children's rights from unregistered marriages. The rights of children from unregistered marriages are often neglected, because unregistered marriages will make the rights of children from unregistered marriages also unregistered, because children resulting from unregistered marriages will be categorized as illegitimate children or can also be said to be illegitimate children, so The position of children resulting from unregistered marriages is equated with children resulting from adultery, thus giving the legal consequence that there is no civil relationship between the biological father and children resulting from unregistered marriages. The aim of this research is to determine the legal aspects and rights of children resulting from unregistered marriages and to find out whether the rights of children resulting from unregistered marriages are the same as the rights of children resulting from legal marriages. This research uses the triangulation method. The types of data used are primary data and secondary data. The primary data used is a previous research journal written by Ari Rianti with the research title Sirri's Marriage and Its Implications for Harmony in the Household in Rejo Basuki Village, Seputih Raman District, Central Lampung Regency. previous research journal written by Maulidyah Permata Hani, et al with the title Siri Marriage in the Perspective of Islamic Law Between Religious Truth and Social Interests. СІМЕЙНИЙ КОДЕКС УКРАЇНИ: ІСТОРІЯ – КРІЗЬ СЕРЦЕ

Zoryslava Romovs`ka

In the article, the author shares information about the history of the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the Family Code of Ukraine, the draft of which she was the author, and the difficult atmosphere of its adoption in confrontation with those who firmly held on to the Soviet model of regulation of family relations. The author analyses the main comments to the draft made by the “advocates of yesterday”. These were, first and foremost, their views on the grounds for creating a family. They categorically denied the possibility of a woman and a man creating a family ‘bypassing’ marriage. Article 3 of the Family Code recognises this possibility for the first time. In this way, the Code fulfils the requirement of Article 24 of the Constitution of Ukraine on the inadmissibility of discrimination on any grounds, and also recognises the human right to choose the forms of organisation of one's family life and respect for this choice. The Family Code of Ukraine is a worldview legislative document that, while regulating family relations, also performs the function of education, affirming universal humanitarian values. Three conceptual and ideological lines are drawn throughout the Code, which intertwine and complement each other. First and foremost, it is the affirmation of the ideology of non-violence, one of the manifestations of which is the possibility of contractual regulation of family relations (previously they could be regulated exclusively by law). Next: the civilisation of love. The Family Code has implemented it by endowing participants in family relations with new rights and responsibilities, asserting responsibility for the fate of everyone around you, for the one who gave you love. One of the manifestations of this civilisation is the possibility for a court to make a decision on the recognition of paternity on the basis of biological descent alone. The prohibition of corporal punishment is both a manifestation of a civilisation of love and resistance to violence. This civilisation of love is evidenced in Chapter 6, “Personal Non-Property Rights and Duties of Spouses”. It begins with Article 49 “The Right to Motherhood” and Article 50 “The Right to Fatherhood”. And then there are the articles that gave legal meaning to such concepts as “respect” and “love”. As a result, the sense of duty based on love sounded differently. The third such line is respect for each participant in family relations. The article informs the reader about acts of “aggression” against the Family Code initiated by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. For example, regarding engagement, solemn registration of marriage, court restoration of a dissolved marriage, visits of parents with detained children, etc. (We are all in the process of growing). The Family Code of Ukraine is modern, based on fairness and rationality. However, we understand that the good has its enemy – the best, and the best is even better. It is only necessary that the existence of these traits is proved by real experts. Keywords: family law, draft law, ideology of non-violence, right to respect, civilisation of love.

Contextualising sex and gender research to improve women's health: An early- and mid-career researcher perspective

Laura Hallam, Laura Hallam, Briar L. McKenzie et al.

The field of sex and gender research in health and medicine is growing, and many early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) are developing skills in this area. As EMCRs specialising in sex and gender research, we aim to better understand sex- and gender-based determinants of human health, challenge long-standing and pervasive gender biases, and contribute to improving the evidence base upon which clinical guidelines and policy interventions are developed. To effectively achieve these goals, we believe that EMCRs would benefit from understanding the challenges of working in this space and participate in driving change in three key areas. First, in creating greater links between the goals of sex and gender research and addressing systemic bias against women and gender minorities, to effectively translate knowledge about sex and gender differences into improved health outcomes. Second, in expanding the reach of sex and gender research to address women's health in an intersectional way and ensure that it also benefits the health of men, transgender and gender-diverse people and those who are intersex. Third, in working with others in the scientific community to improve methods for sex and gender research, including updating data collection practises, ensuring appropriate statistical analyses and shifting scientific culture to recognise the importance of null findings. By improving focus on these three areas, we see greater potential to translate this research to improve women's health and reduce health inequities for all.

The Added Burden of Personality Disorder on Subsidized Australian Health Service Utilization Among Women With Mental State Disorder

Bianca E. Kavanagh, Stella M. Gwini, Stella M. Gwini et al.

This study aimed to investigate health service utilization among women with mental state disorder only (MSD-PD), mental state disorder plus personality disorder (MSD+PD), and controls in a population-based sample. Women (n = 635) from the Geelong Osteoporosis Study completed mental health assessments and were categorized into groups (MSD-PD, MSD+PD, controls). General practitioner (mental and non-mental health encounters) and specialized mental health service utilization was ascertained from data linkage to the Medicare Benefits Schedule, Australia (01/09/2008-31/12/2012). Negative binomial and binary logistic regression models were employed to assess health service utilization differences between groups. Results indicated that women with MSD+PD had more encounters of non-mental health service utilization than women with MSD-PD and controls. Age significantly modified these relationships: women with MSD+PD and MSD-PD had more encounters of health service utilization at midlife and in the seventh decade of life. No significant differences were found in the frequency of general practitioner mental health service utilization or specialized mental health service utilization between groups. These data suggest that the presence of co-occurring PD is associated with increased health service utilization among women with other common mental health problems. Healthcare providers should be vigilant to the presence of PD when establishing management plans with patients presenting with common mental health problems.

Amgad Joseph

This article is the publication of a stela from Abydos that will be exhibited in the Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza (CG 20394/JE 15108). The stela can be dated to early in the first part of the Thirteenth Dynasty, probably in the reign of King Ameny-Qemau, on the grounds of its stylistic, phraseological, iconographic, and epigraphic details. It is the only monument that records the names of Queen Nofret, who may have been the wife of Ameny-Qemau and their daughter Princess Hatshepsut. It documents the marriage between Hatshepsut and the stela’s owner, the 'tw n tt ha', Commander of the [Ruler’s] Crew, Nedjesankh/Iew. It also depicts their children, and the children of another woman called Nebuemwakh who may have been a secondary wife of Nedjesankh/Iew. HEALTH-RELATED FAMILY QUALITY OF LIFE WHEN A CHILD OR YOUNG PERSON HAS A DISABILITY

Margaret R. Kyrkou

Parents of a child or young person with disability face not only the same challenges as parents of typically developing children and young people, but also the extra challenges of supporting the child or young person with disability in such a way as to maximise both their own quality of life (QOL) and family quality of life (FQOL) for all family members. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) encompasses not only physical health but also mental and emotional health, equally important for FQOL. This article builds on information from previous publications, and illustrates relevant issues and the innovative methods parents, caregivers, and professionals have devised to enhance the HRQOL for children and young people with disability, and to improve FQOL. The author draws upon her personal lived experiences of having two daughters, the eldest an adult with disability, as well as being the medical consultant and manager of a newly created health unit tasked with supporting students with disability, who often have high health needs, in educational settings. The health conditions selected are those that have a major impact, not only on the young person with disability but also on family members. Vignettes, all deidentified true stories, will be included to illustrate the multiple issues faced by children and young people with disability, their families and extended families, and treating clinicians. These stories will hopefully resonate with families in particular.
